RPGWatch - Red Heath Interview

by Couchpotato, 05:03

Red Heat is a new turn-based RPG that launched on Indiegogo this week and we had the chance to interview the developer, and ask him a few questions.

Couchpotato: Welcome to RPGWatch can you give everyone a brief introduction about yourself, and your gaming studio?

Red Heath Team: Hello, everyone.  First of all I’d like to say thank you to RPGWatch.com for possibility to describe the game that we are developing.

My name is Eduard Sidoruk, I am the head of Epic Star Graphics and also I am a game designer and an art director of our projects. I’ve been doing it for 5 years already, before that I spent 8 years making animation.

Our studio is situated in Minsk, Belarus. Till the middle of 2014 we were creating casual computer games (HOPA), in 4 years 4 games were created. But in comparison with “Red Heath” previous projects were created with a publisher. To the moment of making the fourth game the production felt like a copy paste conveyor. And of course our interest in developing of casual games went down.

Outland 17 - Kickstarter Now Live

by Couchpotato, 05:00

I was notified today by developer Grenade Tree they have launched their new kickstarter campaign for Outland 17, and are asking for $10,000 to help fund the game.

loading...

Outland 17: Void of Liberty is a tactical RPG based around the the American Revolutionary War, but set in the future. Earth has become overpopulated, so space stations are being built to alleviate the burdening population and explore resource possibilities throughout the galaxy. As in the 18th century, war is brewing under the strain of mercantilism, the distance of the colonies, the shift in values, and the widening gap between classes.

The impoverished are offered places on these “Outlands” in hopes of working off their debt to the corporate companies on Earth. However, with indentured servitude comes awful working conditions, an unfair legal system, and martial brutality. These have pushed the colonists to the breaking point.

G. Martin Wallace, citizen of the People’s Republic of Earth, hears rumors of civil unrest in the colonies. Despite official reports of peace, Martin Wallace must validate these rumors for himself. The game begins with Martin Wallace landing on Outland 3 to discover the truth, and eventually organizing a more effective force to match the military powers of Outland 3.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - Why Get Augmented?

by Couchpotato, 04:55

Game Informer released another update from their month long coverage of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided with more information why people get Augmented in the game.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is our latest cover story, and the Human Revolution sequel explores what Eidos Montrel dubs "the mechanical apartheid." The studio says that players can go into the game without any prior knowledge of the series. That may be, but it never hurts to have a little background knowledge. Today, we're going to explore what's at the core of the game's central conflict – augmentations.

The term (often shortened to "augs") are used to describe a wide array of technologically advanced implants in Deus Ex’s world. Their use is also quite polarizing. Knowing that, why on earth would anyone undergo such risky operations? The explanation is complicated and tragic.

During Human Revolution’s story, Adam Jensen worked for a company called Sarif Industries, which was on the forefront of manufacturing these sophisticated Augmentations. If you played it, you might recall incidental conversations between NPCs discussing the augs. In one, a business professional remarks to another that he’s tired of getting passed up for promotions, and that he’s considering a neural upgrade to make himself more competitive. Other upgrades are more overt, such as the limb replacements Jensen received following a terrorist attack.

Dragon - An Ink & Crayon Action RPG

by Couchpotato, 04:52

I received news of an Action RPG game called DRAGON: A Game About a Dragon from the games developer called Games With Dragons In. It will be released on April 24th.

Here is the games description taken straight off Steam.

Be a dragon in this beautifully hand-drawn adventure!

Dragon's girlfriend has been whisked away by the mean king and only you can help him find her! Use your dragon powers to charge into battle and face off against knights, soldiers, and other authoritarian elements so you can get your ride-into-the-sunset ending. Hey, dragons deserve those, too.

Fly, breathe fire, hoard treasure, and watch trashy talk shows all day just like a real dragon. Step into a tongue-in-cheek world that's guaranteed to bring a smile to your face!

Play this action RPG at your own pace! If your claws need to pack more of a punch, just level them up. If you think you're good enough to throw down with bosses without it, more power to you. Collect gold and treasures to increase your strength so you can take on bigger enemies... or jump in headfirst and defeat them on your skills alone! It's all about the freedom of choice.

Inspired by classic action RPGs from the 16-bit age, players from all eras will have fun with DRAGON: A Game About a Dragon. Please enjoy this charming and lighthearted tale of friendship, greed, and love, all from the perspective of the dragon.

Witcher 3 - Slaughtering With Signs @ IGN

by Couchpotato, 04:47

IGN has another article/video for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt this week about sign magic. So just a quick warning it will contain more spoilers so you have been warned.

Signs the spells used by witchers to disable or destroy their opponents often felt inessential in The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. The utility magic certainly served its purpose in numerous situations, but those encounters rarely required much more than sword slashes between dodge rolls. I used them when I remembered I had them, and forgot shortly after. In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Geralt of Rivia lives and dies by both the sword and the spell. Even on the easiest difficulty, ignoring Signs is the quickest way to lose in battle.

Pillars of Eternity - Video Review @ RPGSite

RPGSite released a new eight minute YouTube video review of Pillars of Eternity

Darren MacPhail brings us a new (very thorough) video review with a look at Obsidian's latest with Pillars of Eternity, an RPG that evokes the classics. And why not, considering the founders of the studio used to work at Black Isle Studios that helped create the Icewind Dale series and Planescape: Torment.

While elements such as the writing and level design are on point as always when it comes to the developer, there are a few things that newcomers should be aware of coming into this modern interpretation of a beloved period of time for Western RPG fans.

Note: There are spoilers found in the video.

Grim Dawn - Q&A @ Next Power Up

by Couchpotato, 04:34

A new Q&A was published on a site called Next Power Up with Crate Entertainment Game Developer Kamil Marczewski, and Team Lead Arthur Bruno about Grim Dawn.

Nathan: Kickstarter seems to have drawn a lot of scepticism lately, with big projects failing their goals. You guys obliterated your Kickstarter campaign, and it was one of the relatively early ones. Do you think if you had to redo that campaign again today, it would have turned out with the same figure?

[KM] That is difficult to predict. With so many Kickstarters failing to deliver and many players becoming jaded with the crowdfunding model, some projects that may have been fine in 2012 now struggle to hit their funding goals.

[AB] I think also during the first months of KS, the press was still captivated by the novelty of it and interested to see how each new project fared. That made it easier to get widespread coverage but over time, it became less of a novelty and now I think press coverage isn't a given. It takes a bigger project from a known team and / or something that looks really fantastic and innovative to rise to the level where it will get a lot of coverage.

Nathan: You guys took to Early Access after having nailed Kickstarter, has the game been more or less profitable on each platform?

[KM] It is difficult to compare the two as Kickstarter served as a means to raise initial funds and let fans know that we exist whereas Early Access is a means to get our game out to more players. In the longterm, Early Access would probably win out simply because you can no longer back our Kickstarter. :)

[AB] I think "profitable" may not be the right term here since developers shouldn't be trying to make a profit on Kickstarter earnings and our original funds from there have long since been spent on development costs.

In terms of revenue though, Early Access has pulled in significantly more money but it's also been going on for over a year. Much of that has also been re-invested in expanding development.

They're different beasts though, as Kamil said and serve different purposes. It would have taken a lot longer to get to Early Access, if we made it at all, without Kickstarter. At the same time, Early Access has allowed us to expand Grim Dawn far beyond what we originally planned during the KS. So both have been complimentary and served different needs.

Deus Ex - The Best Game Ever? @ RPS

by Couchpotato, 04:17

John Walker of RPS published a new article with his opinion on whether Deus Ex is still The the best game ever. The  first part talks about memories, and hardware renderers.

When asked, “What is the best game ever?” I always give one reply. “Deus Ex.” Back in the days when my passport still allowed me into PC Gamer Top 100 meetings, I would furiously argue that it should be no. 1, and indeed become furious whenever it did not. While I may pick another name if asked for my favourite game, when it comes to “best”, I always say Looking Glass/Ion Storm’s greatest moment. But what if I’m wrong?

Red Hook Studios released a new website update for Darkest Dungeon. They share more information about the developers plans for more patches & added content.

Early Next Week: The Roster Patch!
  • Color Variations: All heroes have 4 different color palettes available for you to choose from!
  • Roster Sorting: Sort by stress, resolve level, and more.

Content Drop:

We know that many of you are chomping at the bit for more content, and while we want to get as much new stuff out as quickly as we can, we also want to make sure that what we release is of a quality level consistent with the rest of the game. We have targeted the end of May for our first major content update, and it’s a big one!

  • New Hero: The Man-at-Arms – a battle hardened commander with mace, shield, and rallying shouts!
  • New Hero: The Arbalest – a field medic and artillery emplacement wrapped up in plate armor!
  • 2 – 3 new Bosses! We are aiming to get one new boss in each of the existing dungeons.
  • Fear the Dark: New rewards for the brave and the foolhardy alike can be found only in the dark during Medium and Long quests. Tread carefully, however, as such rare and powerful trinkets are not left unguarded…

Tides of Numenera - Interview @ Eurogamer

by Couchpotato, 05:18

Christian Donlan published a new article style interview with Torment: Tides of Numenera's DM Colin McComb after he gave his speech at EGX Rezzed last month.

Colin McComb has a soft-edged voice, which offers a nice contrast to the intense stare his face can't help but settle into. Bald and gaunt and wiry in that peculiarly American way, he is what my grandfather would have called a railway man. But McComb is not a railway man. On the day I meet him at Rezzed, he is a dungeon master: the same preoccupation with nuts and bolts as a guy who rides the rails, perhaps, but these nuts and bolts hold together story and far more exotic materials - and McComb's rails can take you anywhere.

Most of the time, McComb's job offers a strange contemporary twist on the DM role: he is the creative lead on the video game Torment: Tides of Numenera. This is the long-awaited spiritual successor to the beloved Infinity Engine game Planescape Torment - sufficiently long-awaited and beloved that its Kickstarter in 2013 broke records, eventually netting the developer inXile just over four million dollars. It is also more than that, though, and this brings us back to McComb's one-off DM gig at Rezzed. The new game is based on a pen and paper RPG called Numenera, itself a recent Kickstarter success. McComb is going to allow Eurogamer's Bertie Purchese and I to play Numenera with him. Not the video game, which is still in development, but the pen and paper one. We are going to attack things and grab loot. McComb is going to DM.

He is a perfect DM, and not just because he looks like Michael Keaton cast in the role of Professor Hugo Strange. McComb clearly loves Numenera and knows it inside out, but what really elevates him is his ability to describe and shape a story as if he, too, is witnessing it unfold for the first time. To a certain extent he is, of course: before we meet, he delivers a speaker session at Rezzed in which he says that Numenera is providing the basis for a video game that is as reactive to player choices as it is deep and filled with glorious incident. Beyond that, though, he simply has that rare ability to sweep people up in a narrative - and to appear swept up along with them.

Pillars of Eternity - Beta Patches on Steam

Producer Brandon Adler of Obsidian posted news on the Pillars of Eternity forums with information  on how you can downland and beta test any future patches.

From now on, we will be allowing folks to play our beta patches on Steam. This has a two-fold benefit:

  • Players get new fixes a bit faster and can check out the new changes that will drop in the next patch.
  • Developers get access to information about new bugs that may have slipped into the patch. This will reduce the number of hotfixes for future patches.

We will make a formal announcement to the community when we are going to put the latest patch up for beta testing. We are starting this process with the 1.04 patch.

Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms - Book II Delayed?

by Couchpotato, 04:51

Well after finding no more news about the release of the Book II of Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms I found some new information on Steam , and it's not good news.

Just in-case everyone forgot their publisher bitComposer Games had financial trouble, and forced the developer to halt development because of the insolvency proceedings.

To be more correct, they are undergoing insolvency proceedings; one of the results is that they may end up in bankruptcy, or they may exist further; we unfortunately don't know how the situation is going to turn out in the end.

So as of now its permanently delayed, and might not be released.

Path of Exile - Interview @ RPGamer

by Couchpotato, 04:37

Producer & Lead Designer Chris Wilson of Grinding Gear Games was interviewed on RPGamer last week to talk about the next digital expansion for Path of Exile.

How long has the expansion been under development?

In 2013, when we released the game, we knew we wanted to make a follow-up expansion that was really big, pushed its plot forward a lot, and added new storyline and monsters. The problem was that we knew it was going to take two years and were concerned that two years without releasing any new content for existing players would be a death sentence. So we put together another team and had one team working on the expansion, while the other team finished three smaller ones, which took about four-to-six months each whereas this one has been in development since around 2013.

Can you tell us about the general Path of Exile experience and what changes The Awakening makes to it?

It is both a very large expansion to the core content of Path of Exile but also adds new systems that push the game in other ways. Path of Exile has a reputation in the community as a game that provides a lot of character customisation possibilities. This is partly because we have some systems that, while relatively easy to use for new players, can be very deep for players that like to fiddle around with the details. An example here is that all the skills you can use in the game are [equippable] gems that you can trade between players, and you can also combine them together by putting support gems in the sockets nearby to modify their properties. For example, you can take the fireball gem and convert its damage to ice, spit out multiple projectiles, convert it into a traps or set of mines that can be detonated, convert it into a totem that casts fireballs, or all of the above. That applies to the active skills, but it's the passive skill tree we'll be talking about more here.

Hello everyone! Thanks for tuning in. In this video I take a deeper look at the core mechanics of Serpent in the Staglands, such as the stat system, inventory, combat skills, spells, aptitudes, world interactivity and more!

In this video I explore a bit of the starting temple area, and in the next episode I will venture into the world and explore the countryside, while showing off the combat system and other important features.

So, I hope you enjoy! If you do, please take a moment and press the Like button, leave a comment, subscribe to my channel for more and share this video everywhere! It would mean a lot!

His second video  gives everyone a look at Exploration.

Hello! In this episode, I take a look at how exploration in the game works, and I generally stumble about, die often, and make mistakes! Since this is early footage of me playing the game, this is to be expected. It is highly recommended that you (and I) read the manual more before jumping in!

This is also not a real Let's Play, just a bit of me playing the game for the first time and trying to get my feet wet with some exploration. I show off what you can expect to find by wandering about, and generally get myself into some mischief, as I explore the countryside around the starting temple area and find some unique things.

Kyn - Preview @ Two Dash Stash

by Couchpotato, 04:43

Well it has been a a while since I found any news for Kyn, but a site called Two Dash Stash published a new preview that gives more information about the game.

Overall I would say that Kyn has potential. It has an interesting world with great music and compelling squad based combat mechanics. It is fairly early in development but it has a very good base that they can build upon. However, the full release has been pushed back several times, leading to skepticism within the user base. There have been updates to the game before, so the project still seems to be alive. We will check back in with Kyn as it gets closer to release.

Bedlam - Post-Funding Update #37

by Couchpotato, 04:40

Skyshine Games finally posted a new post-funding update for Bedlam this week. The update has more information on your mobile armor base called a Dozer.

Another month gone by and Team Skyshine is as hard at work as ever. We’re currently in the closing weeks of an internal demo sprint. In other words we’re very close to having a completely playable early build of the game for us to test. There will still be a ton of content to add, bugs to fix and boat loads of fine tuning, but we’ll be that much closer to getting the finished game into your hands.

As we mentioned in our last update, this update will be all about Dozers. Your Dozer is really the hub of the entire gameplay experience. It’s your means of transportation, base of operations and the only home of consequence for your Passengers and Crew on their perilous journey through the wastelands of Bedlam. In terms of gameplay it’s where you’ll access the world map and navigate, manage your away team, balance your resources, man your facilities and receive incoming communications. Some Dozer upgrades will even manifest themselves in combat...

Dark Souls II - Scholar of the First Sin Face-Off

by Couchpotato, 04:35

Eurogamer took another look at the the new graphic options in Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, and compared them to the new console versions in a new Face-off article.

Overall, Scholar of the First Sin on PC marks a technical step forward, but its price point is a sticking point. Given that owners of the DirectX 9 original already enjoy resolutions at 1080p and beyond, extensive mod options and 60fps gameplay, the upgrade is less significant than the jump from PS3 to PS4. A £12 Steam upgrade price assuages those who already own the original plus all DLC, but it's still a high fee for what it offers. Bearing in mind a standalone boxed copy costs £19 at present, the actual saving for a committed Dark Souls fan is pretty meagre.

In Exilium - Now Available on Steam

by Couchpotato, 04:31

A game I covered a few months back called In Exilium was released on Steam. So here is the games latest release trailer, and description just in-case you forgot like me.

loading...

In Exilium is a 3D, "isometric" hack and slash RPG with an emphasis on minimalistic design and player discovery. It is a simple, exploration driven experience, comprised of action based combat, character attribute customization and random item generation to accommodate many diverse play styles. There are many enemies and bosses to defeat as well as plenty of puzzles to solve and secrets to explore. There is no hand-holding throughout the game, no other characters, no mindless quests, everything must be discovered by the player. If you like RPG's and have become disenchanted with typical RPG design practices, In Exilium is for you.

Witcher 3 - Q&A Quotes @ DSO Gaming

by Couchpotato, 04:24

A site called DSO Gaming has a few quotes from various CD Projekt RED employes about the Witcher 3 downgrade, the games delay, and horse slow-mo & finishers.

First things first; the Frost effect has been replaced with a higher quality one. As CD Projekt RED’s Benzenzimmern said, that frost effect is already changed. Moreover, that character’s textures are promised to be ‘as sharp as ever’.

Later on, CD Projekt RED’s MilezZ said that their environment artists has tinkered a bit with all of the brick walls in order to further improve them (visually). MilezZ also added:

“Of course we keep going over assets and polishing them, it’s among the reasons we pushed the game back – we see this as much as a bug as, say, a gameplay glitch. I can not really give you a clear answer as to the case with the bricks. They did look very out of place though so it is very likely that they were on someone’s task list and had just been bumped up in priority, because it was shown that it was seemingly more apparent than assumed.”

CD Projekt RED’s developers have also shed some light on the game’s delay, and whether it was caused by a particular platform. As CD Projekt RED’s TheEvilChris said, the game was delayed because it was not ready yet, and not because of any specific version.

“When we polish a game, we fix bugs and issues for all 3 platforms, PC and consoles.”

Benzenzimmern also confirmed what MilezZ said, adding that CD Projekt RED postponed because it had to polish the game itself, no matter the platform. Moreover, Benzenzimmern claimed that this scene looks much better in the latest build of the game.

Outward - A New Open World RPG Game

by Couchpotato, 04:15

Outward is a new game on kickstarter this month from a developer called Nine Dots Canada who is asking for $120,000 to help fund development of their RPG game.

Here is the game description as I can't find a YouTube video.

Outward is an open world RPG with a focus on simulating the life of an adventurer not a legendary hero. Outward started with a simple question:

"What would it really be like to live the life of an adventurer?"

From simulating the day-to-day lifestyle of living alone in a vast world filled with creatures of fantasy to retiring and passing on your knowledge and skills to your next of kin, Outward is about creating a complete adventuring experience. It's not just combat, it's not just survival, it's both and more.
