Goat Simulator - MMO-Themed Expansion

by Aubrielle, 21:51

Goat Simulator, one of the most famous jokes of 2014, now has a fantasy-themed MMO expansion coming later this week.  It will be free for those who own the game.

I'd say that releasing an MMO-themed expansion in the aftermath of Warlords of Draenor's release made sense. But this is Goat Simulator, so none of it really makes sense.

Later this week, patch 1.2 will go live for the... er... what genre is Goat Simulator, anyway? Goat-'em-up? It adds a fantasy-themed RPG-like world that comes complete with quests and classes, such as Warrior, Rogue, Magician and Microwave.

The Goat MMO Simulator update is released, for free, on 20 November.

Kalypso Media - Dungeons II Preview

by Aubrielle, 21:27

Kalypso Media is hard at work on Dungeons II, and some new Warcraft II-style mechanics have been added onto the model of the first game. Destructoid examines.

As the sequel to the original Dungeons, you're tasked with expanding the scope and scale of your dungeon, while keeping your minions happy. As you send your lesser underlings to create rooms for resources, and digging for gold, you have to monitor their happiness levels or else they'll revolt. By building breweries, you can keep them drunk and content, while paying for their services as well. As you build your base of operations, you'll eventually be visited by humans from the surface, looking to see what all the commotion is about. From here, you'll have to set traps and send out stronger minions to confront them and protect the Dungeon Lord.

But here is where things get a little different. Once you've built the necessary resources and have a sizable force, you can send your minions up to the surface to retake territory. Switching over from Dungeon Keeper gameplay to RTS style mechanics similar to WarCraft or Dawn of War, the pacing changes up considerably. From here, you can battle your foes and sack their villages, turning the whimsical and lush environment, to barren and scorched wastelands.

Dragon Age: Inquisition - Definitive Guide to DA Keep

by Aubrielle, 21:17

Didn't finish either or both Dragon Age prequels?  Need a refresher or a guide to the Keep?  PC Gamer's got an article that can help.

As Phil notes in his review, Dragon Age: Inquisition's massive scope is matched by the complicated and sometimes overwhelming ways in that it interacts with pre-existing Dragon Age canon. I've been playing it too, and even with a thorough knowledge of the previous games - and having read all of the novels and comics - it takes a little work to hold Thedas' complicated history in your head all at once.

This is particularly true if you're just getting to grips with Dragon Age Keep. Rather than import saves directly from previous games, BioWare have opted to allow you to configure a world state via an online application. This helps you to resolve plot holes, ensure that every decision is registered correctly, and even change a few if you're not happy with how things went. That said, configuring Keep with a fuzzy memory of Dragon Age isn't easy. For that reason, we've put together this extensive guide to every decision it asks you to make.

Needless to say, this is going to be a long article and it will involve heavy spoilers for Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2, and their DLC, but no spoilers for Inquisition itself. The hope is that it'll help you establish your world state just-so in time for Inquisition's release, whether that means reminding yourself about decisions you made back in 2009 or configuring a new save file based on the Warden or Champion you have in your head.

Rising End - Multiplayer Hack&Slash

by Myrthos, 15:46

Rising End is a game on Kickstarter that still needs funding with 26 days to go. It is told to be a 'Multiplayer Hack&Slash Game with customizable gameplay with an amazing adventure'.

Rising End is a Multiplayer Online Hack & Slash game with a great diversity of gameplay styles that will take you on a amazing journey, revealing tons of story and cinematics as you battle amongst your enemies or even eachother. Characters will have 10 levels, and each level you get will grant you a skill depending on what class you pick. You will not be tied down to one class like many force you to do, but instead allow you to be a mix of many, that way you will be able to play exactly the way you desire. If you desire to be a full Warrior, or a half warrior/half shaman, that would be all up to you. Skills will not increase in damage as you level to increase the skill-level needed to succeed instead of just levels itself. Think of it this way.. a good level 1 character can kill a level 10 character if enough strategy is used, but the level 10 will have the benefit because of the amount of skills he contains.

Dishonored - One of the Most Important Games

by Myrthos, 15:20

According to Canadian Gamers Online, Dishonered is one of the most important games of the last decade.

While Dishonored was well received in its time, it never really got the recognition it deserved. The game did something with the setting (Dunwall) that I still think about to this day. In simple terms Dishonored made me feel something that I hadn’t felt in a video game since my early days of playing Final Fantasy IV. It did something that made me feel like I was in a world worth exploring to its fullest as opposed to just running through the story as quickly as possible like I do with most modern games these days. Dunwall lives and breathes in a way that never got the credit it deserved, and I am hoping that through this I might be able to convince you to reconsider this game as one of the most important of the last decade.

Valkyria Chronicles - Review @ RPS

by Myrthos, 15:13

Rock Paper Shotgun takes a look at Sega's Valkyra Chronicles and are very enthousiastic about it.

The best example of how the battles blend realtime and turn-based actions is the overwatch equivalent – certain classes always fire on enemies who cross their line of sight, while others can’t. If you’re trying to get past this you can dodge out and trigger the overwatch fire, then when they’re reloading dash across the gap. It’s hard to see how a tactic like that could be turn-based, but it’s key here and feels great to execute – and at the same time doesn’t ‘nerf’ overwatch, because if you run around corners blindly you’ll still get shot up.

This is perhaps the defining quality in Valkyria Chronicles’ design – it plays like the developers sat down and really thought through how every part of it would work. The classes all complement each other beautifully, with clear roles and utter co-dependence. The scouts see further and run faster for longer than the other classes, for example, and arcing lines shoot out with an audio cue as they flag up multiple enemies – letting the slow-moving snipers set up angles, warn of enemy flanks, and identify key target enemies. But run around carelessly and one enemy on overwatch will take you down in seconds – at which point all the info is hidden again. So controlling a good Scout is about getting into position, but equally as important is being sneaky to keep them alive.

Star Citizen - Interview at DSOGaming

by Aubrielle, 06:32

DSOGaming feeds us a rich interview with Cloud Imperium Games on Star Citizen mods, PC exclusivity, graphical features, DirectX12, and multi-core CPUs.

A couple of months ago, we had the pleasure of interviewing Cloud Imperium’s Engine Technical Director, Sean Tracy, who shared with us some interesting new information about their upcoming PC exclusive space sim, Star Citizen. We talked with Sean about a lot of topics such as the game’s PC-only nature, mod support, DX12, some of the key graphical features of Star Citizen, as well as the game’s PC requirements and its multi-core CPU support. Enjoy the interview after the jump and big shoutouts to Cloud Imperium’s David Swofford as without him, this interview wouldn’t be possible!

...

Sean Tracy: Gamers can expect their PC’s to be pushed to the max as we are not bound, as developers, making a game for the “lowest common denominator” which classically for most companies are the consoles or even mobile hardware. Without us having to effectively optimize to the point of being able to run on the limited hardware that is present in the consoles we are free to push the boundaries of what is possible in real time on current and even next-generation PCs. The PCs will always be beyond what console hardware has and further we are dedicated to giving enthusiasts that want to test their machine’s mettle with the options to be able to do that. This is truly a game for PC gamers who want a game built from the ground up for the PC and not up-rezzed or ported over.

LostArk - Next Big ARPG From Korea?

by Aubrielle, 05:50

LostArk, an upcoming project Kotaku is calling "a prettier Diablo" is in development by Korean studio Smilegate.

lost ark
One thing that you can say about a lot of Korean MMOs is that they are a visual feast for the eyes, and new title Lost Ark promises to rival them all. This upcoming game by developer Smilegate is using the Unreal Engine 3 and a top-down isometric view to create a hack-and-slasher.

Steparu.com has a nice preview of Lost Ark, saying that it is a potential rival to Lineage Eternal. It has mounted combat and 18 playable characters, some of which are gender-locked. Lost Ark is planning on a 2015 beta, and sign-ups are on the Korean site.

CD Projekt RED - Puts Suffering Fan Into Witcher 3

by Aubrielle, 05:07

CD Projekt RED never fails to astonish with their awesomeness.  A devoted fan suffering from cluster migraines has been put into the Witcher 3.

I have a brain condition that gives me, essentially, a non-stop Migraine. It's a terrible, shitty Disability and I've had to live with it my entire life. There's no real "Cure" for Migraines these days, so ever since I was 14 I was placed on an ever increasing painkiller "cocktail" regiment.

This ties in because due to my condition and the heavy amount of medicine I have to take, I experience side-effects and sometimes the pain doesn't go away at all, so quite a bit of time pain-locked to my bed and there's only a small amount of things that can take my mind off the pain: redditing, reading and gaming. The reason that those things are able to help me is because they're all very immersive and vast, so I can really get lost in a graphic novel or an open-world video game (Reddit is something I do if it hurts too much to game/read).

So there's only been a very small amount of games that offer that truly immersive experience I need to truly get lost within them and escape the pain that I'm feeling, and The Witcher 2 happened to be one of those games! Now, whenever I come across a game like this, I look around really deeply on the web to find some way of communicating directly to the team that created that game so that I could tell them my story and personally thank them for how they've helped me so much.

In response to Nick's touching letter, CD Projekt offered to reproduce his likeness in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and a number of keys for Witcher-releated digital products. The story was later published on Eurogamer (their article is also the original source for this newspost), whose article includes a small message from CD Projekt:

"Some time ago we got an email from this guy. He described his situation and wanted to let the studio know what he thinks about our games and what they mean to him. That was a very kind and touching email. He didn't ask for anything, just to pass the message to others in [CD Projekt] Red.

"Over the weekend we exchanged a couple of emails and finally came up with an idea to put his face in The Witcher 3. Let me quote one of these emails: 'It is great that we can do something to make him feel better :)'. I think that sums it up pretty well."

Stay amazing, CDPR.

Northern Shadow - Dev Blog #1

by Aubrielle, 06:24

Chariots touches base with supporters of Northern Shadow with their first dev blog.

Back in March when Unreal Engine 4 was announced, we decided to stick with Unity, at that time the development cost of switching was too high, and we were still at that development sweet-spot that the Unity is at its best. As the issues accumulated, the cost of these workarounds started highly outweighing the cost of an engine switch. Which is why, even though after such a large amount of development, we decided to switch to Unreal Engine 4.

Unity is a great engine. And in fact, both 64-bit editor and level streaming issues have been fixed with the Unity 5, which became available for pre-orders a few weeks ago. Its just that for our specific situation, it was a few months late :)

That was a bit long, but after such a long silence, I think a more detailed explanation was needed. We couldn't talk much these last few months, because we were switching to a different engine, and didn't wanted to show it until was ready. But now we can talk about some of the new and exciting stuff!

We've completely redid the world. Originally we had 3 overworld zones that was 15sqkm big. We now have a single 103.4sqkm overworld zone that you can seamlessly travel. We've added seasons to the game, AI acts accordingly to them and your cities' requirements change over time. Switch also gave us a free boost to eye-candy department with better Post-Processing, GPU particles, dynamic global illumination, and better Anti-Aliasing.

PC Gamer - Win 7 Will Not Support DirectX 12

by Aubrielle, 06:09

There aren't many PC gamers that don't use DirectX.  But the next generation of DirectX won't be available for those of us who use Win 7.

Speaking at a PDXLAN presentation earlier this month, AMD's Chief Gaming Scientist Richard Huddy said Windows 7 remains Microsoft's most popular operating system: 52 percent of all Microsoft OS users are still on Windows 7, and that number is actually growing. "It's a very, very popular operating system," he said in comments starting around the 20:30 mark of the video.

But in spite of that, or perhaps because of it, he continued, "One thing that's not going to happen to it is DX12. Yup, DX12 is not coming to Windows 7."

Star Citizen - Won't Support DX10 or 4GB PC's

by Aubrielle, 05:58

Star Citizen is already unforgiving.  And you'd better have a decent rig ready, because it's ready to leave slower rigs in the dust.

Cloud Imperium has never made any bones about the demanding nature of the game—you will recall the bit about how consoles "couldn't possible handle" it—but if you were thinking you'd be able to coast through with the mid-range rig you built in 2011, think again: When asked by DSoGaming if the minimum requirement could be cut back again, Engine Technical Director Sean Tracy said, "Likely not."

...

Of course, if you're gaming on a PC with 4GB and a DirectX 10 card, the odds are that either you're playing Peggle, or you're already looking into a fairly major upgrade. And by the time Star Citizen rolls around, which isn't likely to happen for a couple more years, that sort of system will be just about completely untenable for any kind of gaming that isn't built into Windows.

Lords of the Fallen - PC Performance Analysis

by Aubrielle, 05:00

Dark Side Of Gaming shares some valuable info about what Lords of the Fallen will do to our PC's.

Lords of the Fallen’s PC RAM requirements surprised us when CI Games announced them. According to them, the game requires at least 6GB of RAM. Was this another COD: Ghosts case? Or not? Well, we can confirm that PC gamers will need more than 4GB of RAM in order to – properly – enjoy it. As we can see below, the game itself used almost 3GB of RAM, meaning that those with 4GB of RAM – provided there is no lock – will face major swapping issues.

The Memory of Eldurim - Update Incoming

by Aubrielle, 04:57

Eckell tells us that the next update for Memory of Eldurim is coming shortly, and will contain updates for spells and possibly new monsters.

We've had several weekly updates in a row but the next update is going to be delayed by a week. This usually indicates that the updates will contain a little more content.

We are working on spells. We are going to try to get some spells back in the game that can do some damage and have other effects aside from the very basic one's we've already implemented. We have been writing descriptions for nearly 50 spells. Only a few of these will actually make it in the update but we do have a lot more planned for what magic will be capable of.

We are also working on getting a new monster in the game. We've always wanted to have more than just humans to fight because that does get a little boring so we are working on something special. It will live in the quarry.

Not planned for the next update but coming down the pipe in the not-too-distance future is crafting. You'll need to go to the quarry to gather crafting materials and these creatures will be there to resist your efforts.

ToA: Seasons of the Wolf - Release

by Aubrielle, 04:50

Tales of Aravorn: Seasons of the Wolf has been released, and it looks like the sort of thing that might interest JRPG/dating sim fans.

The twins’ tale starts on a day like many others, when one of the siblings finds a young wolf and decides to take it with him/her. Thus begins the long journey which will take the siblings from the ice-shrouded Ninim to the desert-wrapped city of Dingirra to the storm-shrouded port of Shacklesplit. Explore the corruption-riddled halls of Dingirra, and contest with the crimelords who claim it as their own domain. Sail the high seas, battle mighty pirates, and discover their hidden treasures!

Travel alongside your old friend the ex-mercenary Vaelis, the illusionist Riley, the barbarian Krimm, the assassin Chalassa, the bard Jariel, and last, but not least, the crazy–ahem, the warlock Rowinda! As your relationships deepen, you may discover love with one of your companions. As you spend time together, you will find yourself influencing their very own storylines!

The game’s feature list reads:

  • - Fantasy RPG set in the world of Aravorn, like Loren The Amazon Princess
  • - Play as male (Shea) or female (Althea)
  • - Four characters to romance: Krimm, Riley, Jariel or Chalassa
  • - 8 unique party members each one with different skills
  • - Advanced isometric tileset maps for a bigger world to explore

Tales of Aravorn: Seasons of the Wolf is out for Windows Mac and Linux direct from the developer; and given that it’s been Greenlit, I imagine we’ll see it on Steam sooner or later as well. It’s $24.99, though there is a free demo (Windows / Mac / Linux).

Dragon Age: Inquisition - Unavailable in India?!

by Aubrielle, 23:34

A recent press release from EA confirms that Dragon Age: Inquisition will not be releasing in India.

In a recent post on EA’s website, the company claims that the long-awaited Dragon Age: Inquisition will not be available in India. At 06:11pm GMT yesterday they released the following statement:

“In order to avoid a breach of local content laws, Electronic Arts has withdrawn Dragon Age: Inquisition from sale in India. Unfortunately, that means we’re unable to fulfill your Origin order.

  • All affected purchases for Dragon Age: Inquisition will be refunded. This applies regardless of payment method or date of purchase.
  • Dragon Age: Inquisition may still temporarily appear in your Origin library, but it will be removed before its launch date.”

Breach of local content law typically pertains to manufacturing number or percentage in host location. So, it is interesting that the game has also been lifted from all digital platforms as well as retail.

And in an update...

We have still not heard back from EA... There is a general consensus that the game was removed due to explicit sexual content and homosexuality but users have also reported that Inquisition has been cancelled in the entire region, with orders getting cancelled not just in India but in Bangladesh and other areas.

Ouch!

More Information.

UPDATE: It's been confirmed that EA isn't releasing in India because of the issue of homosexuality in the game.  Source.

The distributor for the game, Milestone Interactive said that this refers to the game's homosexual sex scenes. Rather than face the wrath of some of India's more prudish segments of society, EA have pre-emptively decided to make the game unavailable in India, without confirming or commenting on which local laws were being breached.

Sources close to the matter who chose to remain anonymous have said that this refers to users who have taken offence to some of EA's earlier games such as Dante's Inferno. Unfortunately, the exact details of the judgement in that case are not available online but it is clear that EA is willing to avoid entering the market at all, instead of risking another court case.

Wasteland 2 - New Review @ RPGamer

by Couchpotato, 05:46

Glenn Wilson of  RPGamer posted his review of Wasteland 2, and gave the game a 3/5.

Herein lies the game's main problem: all the strengths come from modern gaming advancements that weren't possible in 1988; the weaknesses come from mechanics that are too simple or too archaic, inspired by the original. Overall, it's a memorable game that can drag in places, frustrate at times, and needs a major interface patch, but there's no denying that inXile went all out creating its idea of a massive dream project, even if it isn't the greatest such dream project of its time. If you're a fan of this style of game and have played the best recent releases, look behind you. Because that's where Wasteland 2 is going to be.

Frontiers - November Beta Bonanza!

by Couchpotato, 05:35

Lars Simkins released a new post-funding update for Frontiers with information about when the beta version will be available for testing, and talks about what is included.

Beta WHEN?

In a few days - we're just sorting out key distribution. Once that's taken care of I'll send out a backers-only announcement going over how to claim your beta key.

The first few days after release are going to be chaos - thousands of people are about to play the game for the first time. As we work out tech issues and Steam key issues and so on please be patient and don't feel ignored if I can't get back to you immediately.

Here's what you need to know right now:

  • Just so we're crystal clear, the beta is only available on Steam. (This is why we pushed so hard for Greenlight - it's the fastest available way to distribute rapid builds.)
  • The beta is currently Windows only - Mac and Linux builds will probably be added later, but I can't promise anything. If / when that happens I'll send out another update so Mac & Linux players know it's available.
  • Regarding YouTube / Twitch - you will have 100% permission to record play throughs and to monetize them if you like. Bugs and all. This is in writing on the official site as well.

What's in the beta?

FRONTIERS' story is divided up into three acts. The beta will give you access to the first two (and to a brief prologue.) It also gives you unrestricted access to the entire main continent.

Be warned: The beta is a mess. But it's kind of a glorious mess. It's the mess of a game being born. Quests may break. Inventories may asplode. Characters may glitch. If that kind of thing bugs you (heh) you may want to skip this version, or at least wait a few weeks until I've gone through a some rounds of bug squashing with playtesters. To those that take the plunge: I really hope you enjoy it.

Valkyria Chronicles - Review @ GameWatcher

by Couchpotato, 05:31

GameWatcher posted the next review for Valkyria Chronicles, and they gave the game a final score of 9/10. This is the second positive review this week.

If you’re a fan of RPGs, you should really check the game out; the story is engaging and the characters are fun, but it’s the charming picture-book aesthetic and unique combat system that really make the difference. At a knockdown price with all the extra DLC included, there’s really no reason not to give it a go.

Path of Exile - Patch 1.2.4d Deployed

by Couchpotato, 05:28

Grinding Gear Games once again posted news on the Path of Exile forums that path 1.2.4 is now available for download. Here is the short post with the news.

We've deployed patch 1.2.4d today. It added two new microtransactions - the Swordfish Ice Spear and Chicken Pet. It's pretty crazy how popular that Chicken is. Today's patch had a bug that destroyed imprints of items. Update: We have restored these imprints in their original locations. If there was something in the way, then they were restored to a remove-only tab called "Restored Item".

Fable 3 - Failure Should Not Kill the Series

by Couchpotato, 05:20

UnrealityMag writer Paul posted a new article where he talks about the failure of Fable III, and how it should not stop Lionhead from developing Fable 4.

The roadmap is there, and there’s proof that single-player RPGs are still in-demand, as evidenced by Dragon Age: Inquisition and everyone on earth dying to play Elder Scrolls VI sometime before they die of old age. And this is an age where Microsoft very, very much needs exclusives to compete with the likes of Sony. They’ve been on a role recently between Sunset Overdrive and Halo: The Master Chief Collection compared to Sony’s well…nothing, and a new true Fable game would work magic in 2015 or 2016.

The roadmap to fix the series is there, and everyone knows all things that made Fable 3 so shitty. But the way to fix them wasn’t to transform the series into another genre, it was to get up and try again. Molyneaux gave up, but the franchise doesn’t need to die, and someone a bit more sane at the helm might actually work wonders for the series.
