In Exilium - Now Available on Steam

by Couchpotato, 04:31

A game I covered a few months back called In Exilium was released on Steam. So here is the games latest release trailer, and description just in-case you forgot like me.

loading...

In Exilium is a 3D, "isometric" hack and slash RPG with an emphasis on minimalistic design and player discovery. It is a simple, exploration driven experience, comprised of action based combat, character attribute customization and random item generation to accommodate many diverse play styles. There are many enemies and bosses to defeat as well as plenty of puzzles to solve and secrets to explore. There is no hand-holding throughout the game, no other characters, no mindless quests, everything must be discovered by the player. If you like RPG's and have become disenchanted with typical RPG design practices, In Exilium is for you.

Witcher 3 - Q&A Quotes @ DSO Gaming

by Couchpotato, 04:24

A site called DSO Gaming has a few quotes from various CD Projekt RED employes about the Witcher 3 downgrade, the games delay, and horse slow-mo & finishers.

First things first; the Frost effect has been replaced with a higher quality one. As CD Projekt RED’s Benzenzimmern said, that frost effect is already changed. Moreover, that character’s textures are promised to be ‘as sharp as ever’.

Later on, CD Projekt RED’s MilezZ said that their environment artists has tinkered a bit with all of the brick walls in order to further improve them (visually). MilezZ also added:

“Of course we keep going over assets and polishing them, it’s among the reasons we pushed the game back – we see this as much as a bug as, say, a gameplay glitch. I can not really give you a clear answer as to the case with the bricks. They did look very out of place though so it is very likely that they were on someone’s task list and had just been bumped up in priority, because it was shown that it was seemingly more apparent than assumed.”

CD Projekt RED’s developers have also shed some light on the game’s delay, and whether it was caused by a particular platform. As CD Projekt RED’s TheEvilChris said, the game was delayed because it was not ready yet, and not because of any specific version.

“When we polish a game, we fix bugs and issues for all 3 platforms, PC and consoles.”

Benzenzimmern also confirmed what MilezZ said, adding that CD Projekt RED postponed because it had to polish the game itself, no matter the platform. Moreover, Benzenzimmern claimed that this scene looks much better in the latest build of the game.

Outward - A New Open World RPG Game

by Couchpotato, 04:15

Outward is a new game on kickstarter this month from a developer called Nine Dots Canada who is asking for $120,000 to help fund development of their RPG game.

Here is the game description as I can't find a YouTube video.

Outward is an open world RPG with a focus on simulating the life of an adventurer not a legendary hero. Outward started with a simple question:

"What would it really be like to live the life of an adventurer?"

From simulating the day-to-day lifestyle of living alone in a vast world filled with creatures of fantasy to retiring and passing on your knowledge and skills to your next of kin, Outward is about creating a complete adventuring experience. It's not just combat, it's not just survival, it's both and more.

D&D Online - Why We Still Love it @ MMO-Play

by Couchpotato, 04:02

Jeff Francis of MMO-Play published his thoughts about why he still loves playing Dungeons and Dragons Online. Here is a short sample of one of his reasons why.

D&D 3.5 Rules

One of the main reasons why I love Dungeons and Dragons Online is that its system is loosely based on the 3.5 edition of the D&D pen-and-paper rpg. I've been playing D&D for over thirty years, starting back with the 1st edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons as well as the Basic and Expert boxed sets. I really like the 3.5 rules for the game, so I feel incredibly at ease within DDO as their in-game systems are based upon it. When I read that a ring is +5 of Protection, I know exactly what the game is talking about. The gaming group I had for about a decade broke up as we moved to different parts of the country, but we still got together to play DDO. So, the nostalgia factor is a big reason why I love DDO.

RPGWatch - Pillars of Eternity Opinion Article

by Couchpotato, 23:26

Fluent & Aubrielle collaborated on a new article for Pillars of Eternity. Now it must be said this is not a review as Corwin is working on that, and it will be posted in two parts.

As an avid RPG gamer and Wannabe-RPG Developer Extraordinaire, lately when I've been playing RPGs and picturing the game I would like to develop in my mind, I often ask myself an important question of the game I'm playing. It's simply this:

"What is the genius of this game?"

That simple question will cut right down to the heart of any game you can think of. Try it now - ask yourself "What is the genius of Skyrim, Arcanum, Neverwinter Nights, or any game you can think of." You will soon start thinking about those extremely important core elements that stuck with you the most; the things that defined the game in your mind. The genius aspects, if you will.

So, by taking this question and applying it to a game like Pillars of Eternity, I have come up with this answer:

"The genius of Pillars of Eternity, is that it's basically Baldur's Gate 2015."

It's that simple. Pillars of Eternity is one of the purest RPGs since Baldur's Gate. That's more than 15 years for those of you who aren't up on your RPG history. Pillars is a game that doesn't try to redefine the genre. It doesn't try to rewrite the classic RPGs it was inspired by. It doesn't try to do too much that it can't pull off. The sheer genius lies in this simple fact. It is basically Baldur's Gate 2015.

Spiders and Focus Home Interactive have officially announced they are  both working on a new Mars: War Logs sequel called Technomancer, and sent two screenshots.

Technomancy theme expanded and explored in new RPG

Spiders are back with The Technomancer, a new post-apocalyptic RPG set in a cyberpunk world for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC set on Mars during the War of Water, where an aspiring Technomancer faces a myriad of questions as his future grows threatened by the secrets of his past.

An RPG, The Technomancer will offer players action-oriented combat gameplay along four different skill trees, focusing on 3 different fighting styles and the destructive electric-focused powers of the Technomancers. But all situations aren't necessarily to be dealt with brute strength, with dynamic conversation dialogue playing a deep role in quests, changing the story depending on the decisions you make. Craft equipment, weapons and armor for yourself and for the companions you'll recruit along your adventure, nurturing relationships with them.

On the run from the Secret Police and confronted by the harsh realities of the Red Planet, you must undertake a quest that takes you through tribal communities, cities lost under the ice, and dystopian shanties sprawled across Mars' dusty embrace.

  • A unique and thrilling science-fiction RPG experience set on the Red Planet.

Wave of Darkness - Kickstarter Rewards Update

by Couchpotato, 02:35

The latest update from Aurofinity & Dreamatrix has information on everything backers need to know about getting their Kickstarter Rewards from the developer.

 Everything about Kickstarter rewards!

All digital rewards, meaning Wave of Darkness Early Access game keys, Legends of Dawn game keys, Spaceforce game keys and all other rewards you will receive the digital way - will be ready this month (April 2015).

Your Wave of Darkness Early Access keys will be ready by the end of this month. Early Access is our "first", so we need to properly prepare for the launch, in order to make the experience fine and dandy for all of you.

You will get the Wave of Darkness Early Access keys via HumbleBundle. We highly suggest that you access HumbleBundle with the email you used for Kickstarter too.

Also, we would want to mention a small remark regarding receiving keys via HumbleBundle. The last time when we sent Legends of Dawn keys, there was a small delay, which resulted in a complete panic among some users. If that happens with Wave of Darkness Early Access keys - please don't panic. You WILL receive your key.

About the Collector's Box reward. We anticipate those will be ready sometime near the end of this year, but we will most definitely inform you if something changes in that aspect.

Future plans

Our plans for the future are pretty clear. The first step is to bring Spaceforce: Rogue Universe back to Steam, which could be ready in a few days. We are working on a Wave of Darkness Early Access Steam page as we write this, as well as fixing, polishing and optimizing the game.

We are also constantly listening to suggestions on various forums, and we would really appreciate if you join us on our communities on Facebook, Twitter, Steam and Instagram.

Given Dreamatrix is a small indie company, every step, no matter how small or big it is, is very important for us. Early Access will be hugely important step for us, and it can decide the future of Dreamatrix. So when the time comes, please, be our voice on the Internet.

BioWare - Shortcomings & Using Heatmaps

by Couchpotato, 02:21

Steve Burke of GamersNexus is back again with a new industry article this week about  BioWare's  shortcomings, and using heatmaps to study players from ECGC 2015.

The annual East Coast Game Conference -- a 1500-attendee attempt at GDC-style development gatherings -- welcomed Mike Laidlaw of Bioware for its keynote today. The Bioware Creative Director has been tasked with oversight of the company's Dragon Age product line, drawing from his experience to discuss world design and storytelling at the conference.

Laidlaw's presentation spanned behind-the-scenes aspects of the development process, including unique considerations taken into account when producing a more open-world title. Throughout the keynote, Laidlaw made playful jabs at Bioware's own shortcomings with Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age: Inquisition, often referencing the Hinterlands and player defiance for migration.

Aurion - New Preview @ IndieGames

by Couchpotato, 02:11

IndieGames published a new preview of developer Kiroo Tales African ARPG called Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan that is available on Steam Greenlight.

loading...

Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan has deep, intricate combat for a game whose story focuses on togetherness and community. Its message of working together, of the responsibilities of a leader to their people, adds a positivity to the game's world and Enzo's connection to the NPCs. It made me feel a personal stake in this beautiful city and the well-being of its people, and that gave more agency to the moments when I had to use the game's intricate combat to protect it. The battle against Ngarba, and the connection between Enzo and Erine, create a conflict that goes deeper than just punching the faces of the jerks that stole your girlfriend. It's shaping up to be a wonderful story with deep meaning, and it will be interesting to see where Kiro'o Games takes the game next.

Gamasutra - Accommodating Player Failure

by Couchpotato, 02:02

Gamasutra is hosting another interesting guest article this month from someone called Phill Cameron who talks about, "Accommodating player failure and recovery".

At its inception, player death was something of a necessity: a way for the arcade cabinet to enforce the collection of quarters. Life was a commodity, and if you wanted more of it, you had to pay. As games moved out of the cabinet and into the living room, that idea persisted, first through the direct ports of the arcade games, but then as an established convention. The “Game Over” screen was a staple of video games, and it’s been tenacious.

As with most conventions, it’s not questioned nearly enough. When accepted as essential, player death robs the player of the chance to recover from failure, to push through an unwanted or unfavorable situation to reach a satisfying conclusion further down the line. As an industry, we’ve attempted this narratively, with player choice being increasingly pushed to the forefront of story-focused games, where bad decisions aren’t punished, but supported just as much as the good. However, mechanically speaking, we’ve been far more stagnant -- if only because conceptually the alternative is that much more difficult to comprehend.

RPGWatch - Dreamatrix Game Studios Interview

by Couchpotato, 06:14

We had the chance to once again ask Iggy of Dreamatrix more questions. This time we talk about the recently funded Wave of Darkness, patches, and SpaceForce IP.

Couchpotato: Your new Kickstarter for Wave of Darkness was launched last month, and despite the slow amount of pledges, it was funded. So, how do you all feel?

Iggy: Well, it was an amazing experience all around. We had a very strong start which was about 20% better in contrast to Legends of Dawn campaign, but we also had periods of severe stagnation. There have been times when we thought reaching the funding goal will be pretty difficult, but in the end we even managed to complete three stretch goals. All in all, we feel great, ecstatic to have another title successfully crowdfunded, and now it's time to work!

Couchpotato: Now that Wave of Darkness is funded, what happens now, and do you have a date in mind for when to launch on Steam Early Access?

Iggy: We are putting all of our time and energy into Steam Early Access release, and all of our team testers are hard at work uncovering the issues.

Now we have to wait for about two weeks for Kickstarter to send us the funds, so we estimate Wave of Darkness will be on Early Access around the end of April.

Pillars of Eternity - Interview & New Patch Notes

by Couchpotato, 06:10

Shacknews interviewed Feargus Urquhart this week about his just released RPG game Pillars of Eternity, and talk about its early success & first game expansion.

Urquhart fully recognizes that even though the game is out there, there is still work to be done. That includes upcoming patches, with Urquhart noting that 1.05, in particular, set to introduce some quality of life improvements. This includes allowing players to change portraits, balance tweaks, and other adjustments based on player feedback.

The big takeaway from the call, however, is that Obsidian is already hard at work crafting an expansion for Pillars of Eternity. In fact, Urquhart offered a reminder that an expansion was always planned since the game's Kickstarter. The only thing that's changed is the manner in which it will be issued.

"We've always been planning to do an expansion and the way we're really looking at it is that it needs to be a meaty expansion," Urquhart explained. "It needs to be this old-school expansion, not some DLC that's two or three hours of gameplay. What it looks like we're going to do, because this kind of expansion can take a while, we're going to split the expansion into two parts. It's going to be one full story that will go from part one to part two, but it's going to be two parts and anyone from Kickstarter that contributed will get both parts. They'll get the full expansion, but the best part is that they'll be able to play it early. We should have an announcement coming up soon."

Obsidian also released the new patch notes for the next game patch.

These are the tentative patch notes for 1.04. We have started generating builds for QA and are planning to release it in a few business days, if not sooner, depending on how testing goes. These are subject to change, and additional items may end up being added in the final notes. The team is now working on patch 1.05, and only critical fixes will be added to 1.04 to make sure we can release this as soon as we can. We are most definitely continuing to read through support threads and e-mails to us (even if we haven't been responsive enough, and we plan to continue doing so for the foreseeable future!

Today's updated added another arena (the fort, only if you're the champion of Maadoran's arena, otherwise keep walking), Hector and Darganus' quests, honorary mention of your pal Miltiades, the annalist, the Second Acolyte (if there is the First Acolyte, why not the second?), Claudia - a charming country girl with the heart of gold and her own portrait, your old pal Feng, extended conversation with Varro about his motives, and probably something else.

What's still missing?

  • The final Hector/Darganus' quests.
  • Tower infiltration to open the gates (siege only).
  • Journal (we're half done but didn't have a chance to finish it).
  • Achievements

We should be able to do everything but the achievements in a week. If there are no issues with the existing content, we'll end the beta and release this content to Early Access.

Age of Wonders 3 - Interview @ GameWatcher

by Couchpotato, 05:58

Nick Horth of GameWatcher published an interiview with Triumph’s Game Director Lennart Sas to get some details on the new expansion called Eternal Lords.

GameWatcher: Eternal Lords is bringing a whole bunch of new content to the table for Age of Wonders 3 players. A lot of other studios opt for smaller packs of DLC, so why does Triumph go for these big expansions instead?

Lennart Sas: We’re all very old-school gamers, and we just really like those big expansion packs. I’m not sure it’s the best business sense, but we prefer giving players a whole bunch of new features packed together for a whole new experience. Some people cut them up into smaller pieces, we also see some people selling what are essentially expansions as full sequels, but as old-school gamers we prefer to do things the traditional way. We want to give good value for money, and rekindle interest in the game that may have faded over time.

GameWatcher: How do you plan what’s in each new expansion? Do you listen to what the fans are requesting, or is it more an opportunity to add what you wanted to add in the base game?

Lennart Sas: It’s a mix of both actually. When making a very complex game like Age of Wonders you need to give things time to mature. When you’re in the thick of development you often run out of fuel in terms of new ideas, but when you’re looking back a few months down the line you can see what all the fans are saying, analyse and play the game yourself, and then these new ideas start to emerge. For example, the new race relations system we’ve added, the ‘Unifier’ victory, this all came forth from iterative development. Once you have the game out there selling and generating revenue, then you can start tweaking it and making it better. Continued development like that is a great benefit of this digital age, of development as service, where the community is right there for you to gather ideas from, get feedback from. It’s been a huge change for us from the usual model of working directly with publishers.

Larian Studios - Interview @ GamesIndustry.biz

by Couchpotato, 05:51

GamesIndustry.biz published a candid interview with Swen Vincke from GDC 2015 who reflects on the success of Divinity: Original Sin, his mistakes, and Kickstarter backers.

Not everyone has fun at GDC. With so many of the industry's key players concentrated in one relatively small area, there is no better time to forge alliances and seek out new opportunities. For many independent business owners a good week at GDC can mean a good year overall, but the opposite is also true. Making the most of that opportunity is a unique burden; a draining mix of excitement, anxiety and stress.

Swen Vincke, CEO of the Belgian developer Larian Studios, has shouldered that burden before, but this year has been markedly, refreshingly different. "It's the first time I've actually been relaxed. Actually, I've never been so relaxed at GDC. Normally I'd be fighting to be able to earn extra budget to be able to continue our game productions. Now, we're more confident. That's a nice feeling."
