Two new Arcania videos are up on Youtube. Both are obviously designed to show off the scenery, lighting and weather effects as the hero runs through a number of (mostly empty) landscapes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2V1l3Fuu3g) in one and then the second focuses on rain and lightning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2V1l3Fuu3g). No combat or other gameplay.
Thanks, Arty!
More information. (http://www.rpgwatch.com/show/newsbit?newsbit=14691)

FYI that second link isn't right. Try http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLHvChSPXhM instead.
Sure looks nice. Hopefully they will show some actual content soon.

The character model looks nice, but you'd think, as long as this game's been in developement, that they would have more to show by now.

Looks good, especially around the seashore.

Looks great, really nice animations. But yes, it's not a good sign that they still, after 3 years of development, only can show us the graphics engine (though it IS a nice engine for an open world game like this...)

Graphics are great, but to be honest it doesn't feel like Gothic to me.

So I have something positive to say...
That looks much better than it did. There's hope for it yet.
Back to being negative: That pop-out annoys me terribly.

Gotta say that looks alot better graphically then Risen does...this one could be great.

The colour palet seems to move a bit more to beige tones, where the Gothics and risen are more green.
Some of it reminded me of the holy land in Assassin's Creed 1.

Yeah, at the 40 second mark I even saw some Bushes pop-off.
And just before the 2 minute mark I again saw some leaves pop-off the trees and bushes.
I was playing Drakensang and there you often get a hole where the leaves are if a tree is between the camera and your group. Is this popping-off the same thing?
I guess it's something they have to implement with a third person game, but then again the Witcher 2 footage shows none of that (although TW2 might not be an open world so they have less to process).

seems like they are showing off the same stuff they showed off a year and a half ago...

Looks surprisingly good. Now all we need is more information and some actual gameplay footage.

It's whet the appetite, but like some I can't help but wonder why they aren't showing more so close to the release date. By all means delay it, if you are going to do it *properly* ;-)

Funny thing is that they show less things now, at E3 a year ago they showed some actual gameplay. This looked like an empty world.

There's nothing in those videos (engine-wise) I haven't already seen in Age of Conan…

It can't do much for the fps. If your squeezing every single hair of performance sure.
Perhaps its for maintaining fps... Any case they should, or better, have the option to not have it happen - if they at least don't improve it.

It does look nice , mostly the "sun shine" part of the video , it is the first time that i see a weather effect that feels like Mediterranean summer .
The model is cool and i love how his hands move as he turns although i would like to see some jumping animation .

Meh. I'm not interested in buying a weather simulator. No gameplay shown. It also doesn't look like a Gothic - where are the stylised character graphics?

March 29th, 2010, 13:16
Yeah I also wish they'd shown some gameplay.
Nevertheless that does look good and I'm patient enough - I wouldn't care If they didn't show anything at all until it was released.
Still there's a mean little man inside me that wants this to be noticeably worse than Risen

At Gamescom they showed a character running through an uninhabited world. Now, seven months later, they are showing a character running through an almost uninhabited world. The world might look better, but as far as progress is concerned it is a bit disappointing.

Spellbound/jowood has to do more than this, they have to convince the gamers, they have the Gothic series name to live up to, they must at least equal but preferrably surpass all the gothics or else Arcania may fall by the wayside. I havn't seen anything to set my pulse racing yet, my heart hasn't skipped a beat, no cold sweat palpitations of great expectation, my eager anticipation level meter hasn't even blipped.
Have they got some great game hidden under wraps? - i see no signs yet.
Could this be another Forsaken Gods flop? - i sincerely hope not.
Is there something more that could be shown to convince and reassure us? - i dearly hope so.
Is this really Gothic 4 ? - show us some gameplay and not just some red sky or lightning flashes.
Now is the time for convincing.

Well my guess is as good as any, but i think they're saving the biggest hype for the e3 :)

Gothic? Arcania has nothing to do with Gothic. It's only a device to create a new brand on top of Gothic.
The game should be almost finished by now. Spellbound is looking for new projects, JoWooD talks about the next Arcania game and the game has to pass MS cert. PS3 will come later, it seems.

@Gorath, Re:- Gothic? Arcania has nothing to do with Gothic
If Arcania is nothing to do with the gothics, i recommend you do some swatting up, check out "The Chronicles" it is all but by name Gothic 4, where NH becomes King Rhobar 3rd in the continuing story.

It would be hard for Jowood to trump any of them, but they have a snowball's chance in Hell to match Gothic 1&2.

Now this is some serious negativity right here. Just because they havent shown real content doesnt mean it doesnt / wont exist. Let them keep working on it. Who cares how long it takes.

That's the tacked on stuff. ;)
Now let's wait for the gameplay. If the leaked retail release list (Gamestop? something like this) is correct, the game should come in early August. This means they have until early June to start cert on the XBox. Which hints that the game should already be in late alpha or even beta.
The majority of the gameplay is probably already mearly finished, and the game is quite close to release. So why don't they show it? An easy guess would be "because they don't expect positive feedback".
The Spellbound founder made one of my favourite games ever (Giana Sisters on C64). I would be glad if they'd really pull it off. I'm not convinced though.

I wouldn't trust a release date from a game store. They are always guessing and never get things right. Chances are, they have a long ways to go (which figures, since they're only showing a guy running through empty lands).
I don't see why anyone should be assuming it will either be shit or great, at this point. It's too early, and we don't have enough info.

We already know that some areas will be "closed" as you proceed into MQ , which is bad , IIRC a developer said that "we are not going to spawn higher level enemies in those areas in the case PC returns" which sounds worst .
It does look interesting but it isn't high on my list , i will definitely hate it if it resembles the Gothics to the slightest .

Nope, officially it's "Arcania - A Gothic Tale" at the Spellbound website.

Though some places - Poland etc' are sticking with Gothic 4 in a kind of 'dedicated to the series' way.

There is a lot of hoping this is going to be a colossal failure. Why do we hate this game so much again? Is it really just because we're still that angry at JoWood for what they did to Piranha Bytes & Gothic 3?
I'm including myself, btw, I've got a feeling "Arcania: Gothic whatever" is going to suck.

March 30th, 2010, 22:12
I am pessimistic given the info we've seen so far, but I wouldnt hope for Arcania to fail. The genre is still so sparsely populated that any quality additions are welcome.

Well look at it this way... the only Gothic game so far that wasn't developed by Piranha Bytes was Forsaken Gods, and we all know how that turned out….

I'm not at all hoping this game will be a failure. Nothing would make me happier than to have two great series emerge from the Jowood/PB breakup.
Why do we hate this game so much again? Is it really just because we're still that angry at JoWood for what they did to Piranha Bytes & Gothic 3?
Speaking for myself, my hunch has always been that JoWood is the primary reason for the horrific release of G3. And with the the horrid release of Foresaken Gods, my hunch was confirmed.
I've always been confused with publishers choosing to get involved with RPG developers but expecting a Madden Football XXII development cycle time. Reminds me of EA really.
Because PB's 'Risen' was, for me, a really great game and a VERY bug free experience, albeit a little short, puts the ball firmly in JoWoods' court in terms of just WHO was more at fault with the release state of G3 and FG. Hence my cautious optimism regarding Arcania.

They are clearly responsible. Hiring Bangalore to develop a European flavored RPG is just plain (sorry Sarah) retarded. I work with outsourced software companies. They do try. They work hard. Sadly, the quality is often (but not always) sh*t because you just can't always effectively manage the relationship. Communication... Lost in translation.

Visually it looks great.
I'm hoping it will be worthwhile.
There's nothing that would please me more than getting another worthy Gothic game - but I can't really ignore the factors speaking against that possibility.
Have to brace myself for the disappointment - ya know.
