This is something new I think, found on another forum, inspired by the "Scene of the Day" thread.
http://jemym.no-ip.com/secret3.zip
This file contains 10 small mp3's. The goal is to guess what game the music comes from. I doubt anyone can guess them all. I have tried to mix the platform, age and the genré and only picked games I know was very popular, at least at their time of release. The music is stored in 64kbit mono to reduce the size and sometimes I have used cleaned/remixed music but you should still be able to guess the game.
If you wish to create your own contest you can use Gold Wave (http://www.goldwave.com), then recompress with Lame Mp3 Encoder (http://lame.sourceforge.net/download.php). Be sure to clean out the ID3 tags.
To host the contest you can use Send Space (http://www.sendspace.com), Mega Upload (http://www.megaupload.com) or Rapid Share (http://www.rapidshare.de).

5. Morrowind
6. Tetris (this IS just a guess, however)
8. Doom
2. Sounds *terribly* familiar, but I can't put my finger on it.

9. Reservoir Dogs? (never played the game, but I know there is one and the music would fit KBBL 'supersounds of the seventies')

Nop. Not Gothic.
I am amazed you recognized Turrican II just by recognizing Chris Hüelbeck's style :)

No to both. :)
Number 9 might be difficult considering it's an in-game title, although I know that many actually bought the soundtrack for this game since it was well known for it's great music.

2. Said to have singlehandy resurrected the rpg genré
4. Exceptionally wierd japanese title about a large ball
7. The "Sequel" is one of the most played games in the world.
9. Sadly the last adventuregame made by this still very active developer
10. Ancient game about the last of his kind

Well... could it be Gothic 2, then? Because that's probable the game most ex-Dotters have played.
Chris Hülsbeck's style is pretty unique. I knew I had heard the track only recently, and the only Turrican games I replayed last year were Turrican 1 and Super Turrican 1. When you said it was not from the original Turrican game (and I knew it was not from Super T), I was pretty sure it was from T2 because I watched the intro movie not too long ago... :)

The Turrican series consisted of platformer action games in the Metroid mold. Incredibly addictive, many secret places to explore... fine games, if you're into the genre.

never played the metroids though i know many like them. the only consoles i ever owned were playstation and dreamcast, both of which i was already an adult when i got them. the only really platformers i remember much were strider and zillion. those were both great sega master system games (which my friend owned not i).

Not many to pick from are there? :)
2.neverwinter nights?
Close, but not quite.
by the way what is turrican 2?
Turrican was an old Amiga game, Turrican II ofcourse the sequel, well known for it's music. There was an easter egg, if you pushed "HELP" five times in the titlescreen you got a music player that could play all the game's music.
Here's the original intro. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GI-w894lrY)

Maniac Mansion is an ancient game for sure. I have finished every one of LucasArts adventuregames. Adventure/RPG is my favorite genrés.

yeah i used to be a huge blizzard fan. i actually shamefully own the collectors edition to both diablo 2 and warcraft 3 though the later is no longer in my possesion. only played world or warcraft for 3 months in the spring of 2005. the expansion will be the first blizzard game i will not purchase. i would have even found a way to play starcraft ghost on a friends console, but then they canned that too. diablo and diablo 2 were actually the only pc rpg's (usually that term loosely) that i played in between ultima 8 and siege of avalon, with gothic following not to long after which was viagra to my 'computer game playing drive'.

That was Warcraft III ? Then I must confess, I wouldn't have guessed. I forgot that you purposely put them in low quality, and so I got the impression that it must be old, certainly not the third part! :)
Heh, heh, I know what "weird japanese ball game" you speak of, since I saw it on TV like a year ago, but I give up - there is no way, that I remember the name of it, which was something meaningless to me. ;) By the way, that game was *really* weird!

The soundtrack for that wierd game is among the most odd soundtracks I ever heard. :) It was also extremely popular even if it's only available on Playstation 2.

great post by the way JemyM. i might try a list after we 'solve' this one.
Go ahead! :) I was thinking about an RPG-only list.
The last three might be difficult though since none of them are RPG's and 2 of them are not PC games. I give one more hint (which might not help unless someone actually played them) then I guess I can give away the answers.
4. This exceptionally wierd title started as a sleeper hit but was then nominated by Time Magazine as game of the year, then it won "Excellence in Game Design" and it won another price for "Best Innovation", also won for "Best Soundtrack" on both IGN and GameSpot.
9. One of the most stylish adventuregames ever made, with a wierd blend between death and spanish accents/music.
10. A famous c64 adventure/action game that can almost be counted as an ancient forefather for the Survival Horror genré (Resident Evil/Silent Hill) even if it have more to do with a specific assassin than horror.

I finally managed to get my ftp up and running again. Here are my 10 game soundtrack clips; among these are 3 CRPGs, 2 console-only titles, 3 adventure titles, 2 underdogs... or so :). Not all of these games were hugely successful, but with one exception they are among my all-time favorites in their respective genres.
I didn't always use intro or main title track snippets... but I jotted down the type Lands of Lore 2 (http://www.schuhmacher-net.de/~nicole/Track1.mp3): Credits - Kendrik
Super Turrican (http://www.schuhmacher-net.de/~nicole/Track2.mp3): In-game music - Kendrick
Deus Ex (http://www.schuhmacher-net.de/~nicole/Track3.mp3): Intro/Title - curious

3-deus ex-only played the game twice but could never forget that one!
8-i know i've played this one...spellforce?
good selections Jaz! and good taste in music, can't wait to see what the games are:)
Jaz
February 12th, 2007, 07:59
3: Deus Ex is correct :). 8: is not Spellforce, though - hint: a different genre, and the company which made it already has a game in Jemy's list.

Jaz

Kendrik

Number 8 - Bladerunner?
Jaz
February 12th, 2007, 21:04
Nope, but this time it's the correct genre.
Hint: the remaining CRPGs are No.s 1 and 9.
Jaz
February 14th, 2007, 00:37
Okay, seems to be a bit... delicate :), so I'll give some more hints:
1: the second in a trilogy of CRPGs; I know of at least two people on these forums who love it. They must be the only ones ;).
2: While the franchise started on the C64 and soon spread across a variety of gaming platforms, two titles were limited to a certain console. This is from one of these exclusive titles. Jemy's list had one of the 'regulars'.
3: -
4: a console-exclusive title, unless you count emulators. This one sold extremely well.
5: Another well-selling title with a solid fan base, the first in a trilogy. Did not start a new sub-genre, but revived a much older one.
6: One of the top-rated games over at Home of the Undererdogs.
7: Multiple-platform action title. Had a sequel by a company that usually made CRPGs.
8: We already know it's an adventure. Jemy's list had a game by the same company.
9: Some say it's not a CRPG, some say it is... doesn't matter. Spawned a successor which was just as well-recieved, may get a younger sibling soon. First game featuring elevator music I ever played.
10: Another underdog - loved by the critics, spurned by the masses. A spin-off title from a franchise which originally copied better known mecha series.

1 - Lands of Lore 2 (Although I can only think of one perosn who likes it - ;) )

5 - Serious Sam: The First Encounter? (working purely on the clues now)
6 - I know I have actually heard this - Planescape Torment?
Jaz
February 20th, 2007, 07:43
No, and no... hmmm...
Here's another set of clues:
- No. 5 is not a shooter, and No. 6 is not a CRPG.
- The protagonist of 5 loses an eye, and the protagonist of 6 ends in an asylum.
- 5 has hand-drawn cutscenes while the cutscenes of 6 are CGI with actors.
- 5 has an NPC known as Benny, 6 has an NPC known as Elias Camber. In both cases it's not the NPC's real name.
Easy-peasy! :)

ok no gaming time for me the past 4 days. but i did get to go through lots of old games and some newer to come up with this. (and now i have more games i want to replay:)) mine is going to be all futuristic sci-fi games with one being more matrix sci-fi=present day but sci-fi themes. i didn't include some top games of mine either because games in the series were already mentioned (system shock, deus ex, fallout) and theres probably some console games from way back but they weren't all too memorable save the resident evils but those are unique avenue of sci-fi. one game i choose is ancient and a console game though. ok enjoy and let me know if i messed up with the uploading!
*note there are only 2 rpg's here and one of them is the the only song ever in a video game that gives me emotional chills everytime i here it. few songs retain that kind of potency!

i'll give some hints in a bit later. but good job with #6. martian gothic when i played it a few years back took the crown away from resident evil 2 as my favourite survival horror. sure it has no slick cg scenes, but it has a good script, intense atmosphere, and excellent dialog/voice acting especially by the 'computer ai' whose name i forget. its a shame i can't get it to play anymore...
nice new icon Jaz, where is it from?
Jaz

Wasn't the AI's name Mood? I may be totally mistaken since it's been so long.
My current avatar is Bob the Builder's Wendy. We may share a similar field of work, but that's about all we have in common: she's clever, organized, a DIY professional, and blonde.... but picking a BtB avatar was the only way to prevent sonny from griping about me reading the RPGWatch site .

well apparently the tracks i picked are too obsure, or there's nobody left reading this thread, or they just don't like the music:) anyways here's some hints for at least Jaz.
1)-the developer produces only one genre of games. contains a scandavian biker name 'stig'
2)-a sega master system game. the game logo was a futuristic gun.
3)-weapons included a three-barreled rifle
4)-this one really is to easy for hints if you played it. its an action adventure game, good enough?
5)-heres the borderline sci-fi game. not the greatest graphics but a highly detailed and interactive world; for its genre way ahead of the pack for the time. there a main character named roper in it.
7)-"i don't know but i've been told...diedre's got a network node"
8)-darwin would be proud of these 4 aliens.
9)-a truly atmospheric journey, from top to bottom.
10)-if there is a 'train' to the afterlife i would like to hear this song on that voyage. in the game though you are just travelling to another planet when this is playing.
Jaz
February 27th, 2007, 16:39
3): Corridor 7? I played and replayed that one to bits, but - as with most shooters - without sound, except for the first time. Besides, I loved the three-barreled gun, it was my favorite.
4): Um, yes... Nomad Soul...
5) The Longest Journey? The only other Roper I remember is from Double Dragon... :-)
10): Gunman Chronicles? Don't remember another 'train ride' to another world.

February 28th, 2007, 04:46
3)nope, it is a first person game, but none of the games i selected are shooters. guess i alienated my small audience;)
4)yes, yes. i've never actually finished the game...but it was awesome. i'll have to complete it though as the sequel draws nearer.
5)nope i actually was going to included that game but the insanely long install crashed on the 3rd or 4th disk:( this game, like omikron: the nomad soul and #9 and #10 was released by and during the golden era (my opinion of course) of eidos 1998-2001.
10)the destination world is sunder.
Jaz
February 28th, 2007, 11:47
10) Anachronox!
About 3): Hmmm... the only other games I played which featured 3-barrelled rifles (I think) were UT and Halo, but you said it's not a shooter... is it Dirge of Cerberus? I haven't played it yet, but I will play it one day because I like Vincent.

10)YES! even though i've never completed the last level in a couple long playthroughs i'd probably sacrifice and organ to be able to play a sequel.

some more hints
1) your main character is a redhead named venus jones.
2) its based on an anime movie? with the same name. it begins with the letter 'z'
3) i know a few people here have played this game, but i don't believe the english version was ever released in america when it came out ~2 years ago. you can actually wash dishes in the game too.
5) darci stern is the main character here. and roper is voiced by the same person who voices gorn/thorus in the first 2 gothics.
8) the only other game this developer made was a game based on and with the same name as a horror movie made over a decade prior to the game itself.
9) this game is completely different from the other action adventure franchise this developer is famous for. one of the 4 characters you play is also voiced by a voice actor from the gothic series-milten.

5-ah yes. did you enjoy the game. most people would probably say "what the hell?" but this game is in my top 20 all time games ever made. trash littered on the streets that blows in the wind and the 'storm' your running leaves behind. great dialogue. npcs all over the place that have nothing to do with the story but you can talk to. climbing and jumping all across the rooftops and of course zip lines! too bad muckyfoot died as startopia was a fun game as well.
8)-these four aliens don't have much personality and i don't even think they had names but they do work together well and they even 'evolve';)
9)-nope zillion was the only console exclusive game on my list and that was nearly 20 years old. one of the four main characters you play is a female robot. she's quite large too.
