This forum certainly fits with how my life has been going in the last year. Politics has always been alive in my mind, but the anger it generated tended to drive me away to books about religion and metaphysics. This in turn pushed me kicking and screaming towards inner truth....and video games ;)

That aside, imagine you are taking part in a shamanistic ceremony with a sacrament which opens you to memories of lives you may have lived in the past...and also shows you the drive behind why you love and wish to be loved...

Then imagine that you are rewarded greatly for you efforts and are told to take some well deserved rest to reflect on all your achievements in this life...and as an example of how to unwind two distinct images rise into your mind...

Gothic 3 and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic

God certainly is great

and funny as hell ;)

I am also wathcing Stargate SG1, but politics also interest me. I have my own opinions, and not all people love me for them.
I dont beleive in a god(so no deity to thank), but I am also happy for the new titles that has come/will come this year. Although Gothic 3 is taking away my social life at the moment.

I just dont really have much of a life, lol.

I tried to DM for Dungeons & Dragons several times for friends, but always ended up with mental problems / barriers that got in the way. Im schizophrenic (schizoaffective), with all the associated brain disease problems of those, memory span problems, i would read a whole D&D book and then cant remember it. When i DM i end up hearing voices because of the stress that it puts me under. Then i get ordered by parents/doctors to stop what i was doing, so i eventually leave behind willing and good D&D players.

I wish it wasnt so, but i cant do work besides play MMORPG games without getting stressed out and having all the schizophrenic symptoms come back again. Which is why US government doesnt want me to work and pays me not to have a job... I really would like to DM... but ive given up on it. It just doesnt work out. Nothing wrong with the players, its just stuff wrong with my brain chemistry.

EDIT -- and im atheist and i dont like politics.

Perhaps you could try DM 'ing a NWN or eventually a NWN2 session; it might prove less stressful.

My life is my family. I'm blessed with a wonderful wife, and we've been blessed with two wonderful boys, who are now 10 and 8.5. We love doing stuff as a family and keep very busy.

I also work - and have a 45 minute commute each way which allows me to listen to my various avante garde jazz music.

And I love video games - I was a fan since Castle Wolfenstein in the very early 80's on my Apple ][+, and was mainly FPS oriented - I had tried something in the RPG vein back then (perhaps Wizardry) but it didn't take. Then my wife got me Diablo for Christmas right when it came out and after playing several mindless hours I swore off 'RPG' until I was interested in KotOR for the Star Wars tie-in ... and someone suggested I try NWN to get used to the combat system. It just so happened to be summer 2003 and the Mac version was coming out, so I grabbed the demo, got intrigued and bought the Mac version on day of release. From there it has just been a blur of RPG love and catching up ...

I had done some writing for a couple of small sites - 'Game Comments' - and that led a couple of years ago to starting to actually write stuff for GamerDad. Now I do quite a bit there - managing editor, actually. I also have a bunch of reviews over at AceGamez, which lets me stretch out a bit more than GamerDad. And I'd done a few bits for the Dot, and hope to add something here!

Nice to see you again Ammon, old friend. Hope all is well with you.

My new hobby is collecting Roman coins. Well, 'coin' so far, since i only have one, but Im going to get more! They are suprisingly cheap too, got my Septimius Severus provincial bronze for 6 bucks on Ebay. Not bad for an ancient artifact

You'd think 2,000+/- year old coins would be far more expensive, but they really arent. People are digging up barrels of the things every day. Of course as with anything, it goes to how rare the coin is, how old it is, what condition it's in, what material it's made of, who the emperor is, etc. A Julius Caesar silver denarius in great condition will be worth hundreds more than a bronze of a generally unpopular or unknown emperor such as Septimius Severus.

Besides my 5-day schoolweeks I work a lot. During monday, tuesday and wednesday I work from 4 till 10 in the evening. Whenever I'm not working or at school, I am either at friends or on my computer. Playing World of Warcraft or G3 are the "Primary" things that I do when being on the computer.

Friday- and saturdaynights are the so called "beer-nights" -- or said in dutch; Bieravonden. During the friday night I am usually residing in the local pub, and on saturday I tend to find an interesting club somewhere in Holland -- sometimes I even have to take the train to get there, which usually get's me home around 7am.

I have baseball -- both practise and matches -- around 10 hours per week too. Aside that I go to the gym 2-3 hours a week. So overall my schedule is pretty full most of the time. I should start working less soon since my exams are coming up.

I moved here from the Dot after some fellow NFG'ers created this site. I wasn't active at the Dot for a long time, and although I do visit this site rather often now, I won't be as active as I was in the "old days".

Just have to say; Great work with the forums guys, and keep up the good work.

Hmmm, I'm boring. I play crpgs at work and at home. When not doing that, I like to read fantasy novels or watch the St. Louis Cardinals and Rams games. My wife and I also enjoy shopping and like to gamble occasionally. I never watch TV, outside of sports, so I keep up with the news via the Internet.

I love working with my hands and creating things, from designing and creating jewelry to restoring guitars, boats and cars. I’ve always been kind of gifted when it comes to my hands. My current project is my Gothic water cooled computer...more like a work of art than a computer...to me anyway.

Writer by day and writer by night. I guess it is a blessing to be paid for doing the thing I enjoy the most. I also play tennis, when my creaky back will allow it, and am an avid movie-holic, who would love to sell a screenplay at some point. Beyond that, I am just an "old"school RPG nut, who has been captivated by the genre since I at down with my Blue Book D&D rulebook on Xmas morning, trying desperately to get my brain around this strange activity called "role-playing." ;)

What do you write Alex?

By day, it is writing of the corporate shill variety: white papers, design documents, proposals, marketing blurbs, etc.... By night, it is whatever takes my fancy, which currently is screenplay writing. I've also done a ridiculous amount of writing for NWN and may do some more mod writing in the future, if I come upon a project that interests me.

"Island Adventures: Horns of Craven," "Island Adventures: Color of Light," and "Darkness Over Daggerford." Also, have written a fair amount of dialogue for the final Island Adventures mod that might make an appearance in NWN2. However, not doing anything with NWN or NWN2 at the moment. I'm scared of the NWN2 system requirements, so I'm actually doing the incredible: catching up on a lot of PS2 RPGs (oxymoron) from the past few years, like FFX, Dragon Quest 8, etc. Fun stuff, but certainly not inline with the best of PC RPGs, like Gothic, BG2, Fallout, Arcanum, etc. Gonna play Gothic 3 as soon as I can afford an upgrade... probably after the Holidays.

I have no life. Period. I spend a certain amount of hours doing some proffesional projects as a developer, a greater amount of hours on studying various programming languages to evolve my developing skills, and the rest is spent on Gothic 3. As soon as I wrap up my final game(for now), I'll start playing NWN2 and see what that's like, I have fairly high hopes for that.

Modding for NWN was fun. I was lead designer of a NWN PW called The Moonshae Isles based very heavily on the Forgotten Realms novels by Douglas Niles. :)

Ok, hobbies...Well, like Lord Alex, writing is my main hobby, though I hope to branch out into a career as a computer gaming magazine editor or I could somehow break into the computer game development biz. Meh, who knows. Currently, I'm enjoying writing for RPGWatch.com and mmorpg.com. I also enjoy fishing, skiing (though I haven't been in a while) and reading sci-fi and fantasy. I'm currently reading a great sci-fi book called Magic Time: Ghostlands which is set in a post-apocolyptic very near future where those who survived are "changed" in various ways. Some can even harness magic or take on the form of dragons. Plus there's this nationwide EMP that renders everything electrical useless. Anyway, anything post-apocolyptic is cool, am I right Mad Max/Fallout fans? ;)

Hobbies.. Hmm - Alot to talk about. :P

I have some important hobbies in my life - those who doesn't change with time. Such as: Politics [It's a must in Arabia, with all the stuff goin' on], Love [I've been loving one girl for like 4 years..:D], Swimming , and PC of course.

[b]PC: I love RPGs/MMORPGs, especially Gothic(s), and Dungeon Siege. Also some RTS games like "Warcraft" - I'm a big fan of this. But that's not all on PCs - I have a hobby on Scripting with diffrent types/langages, I used to spend 2-3 hours on reading diffrent tutorials on scripting languages [HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP..etc] untill i was addicted to WoW - Which showed the bad side of my PC hobby. :(

-Politics: As it's known, Arabia is living through wages of War & discrimnation, And it's also known how much of a bad image Arabia has to the outer-world [Terrorism, Racism..etc] - So I think it's our duty as the new generation to spread the Truth & Facts (atleast - Our belives). I hope we'll change something in future.

-Swimming: Nothing to tell about it - But something weird on me which is I'm not a Sport(s) Fan at all, but I'm a Swimming Lover. :)

-Love: 1 day before yesterday I met a girl I liked when i was 11 years old, but due to living locations and other stuff I wasn't able to see her untill that Day, she's grown up of course - Grew more beautiful, She did light the fire again in my heart (!!).. And in the mean-time i'm trying to find a way to be able to see her more often. I simply love&honor her. :)

Hope I did the most little number of spelling mistakes. :P

I upgraded for Oblivion, so I'm hoping it lasts for at least a year or two!!

Lord Alex
November 1st, 2006, 15:34
I was able to squeak by with my old system for Oblivion: 3Ghz P4, 1 Gb RAM, ATI 9600 XT, etc. Played on lower-mid settings with shadows off, etc. and it played pretty well. However, NWN2 has higher system requirements and will probably look like a$$ on low settings (not much better than NWN1). So, I don't want to ruin the experience by not playing with a decent PC. I'm thinking I can get by with a vid card upgrade (the new x1650 xt that just came out), and another Gb of RAM. That should at least get me to where I can play at mid-level settings on, so it'll have some of the "next-gen" polish with lighting, etc.

Though it might be sacrilege to state so on these boards, I have to say that FFXII is looking pretty appealing right now as well, and I know that it will run well on my PS2. ;)

My advice (since we're already this deep in the thread hijack) is to print the ad here (http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=159407&WT.mc_n=57&WT.mc_t=U&cm_ven=AFFILIATE%20MARKETING&cm_cat=BEFREE&cm_pla=DATAFEED-%3EPRODUCTS&cm_ite=1%20PRODUCT&cm_keycode=57) (also page #9 of the weekly ad) and then go to Best Buy and get them to Price Match. Another expensive and sometimes embarrassing hobby I have is target shooting. Living in IL makes it tough to find people and places that are accepting of such a hobby but nevertheless it’s still a blast, heh, oh boy. I'm a huge 1911 fan but partial to the .22lr cartridge since it's so damn cheap. I'm looking for a conversion kit for my blued Kimber Custom II to complete my very small collection. At the moment I own a Kimber Custom II .45 ACP, a beautifully customized Springfield 1911-A1 9mm stainless, and a scoped .22lr Ruger 77/22 - RP. I'm a sucker for bolt action rifles. I'm a great shot at 25 feet with a light trigger, but at 50 and beyond well... let’s just say I won't be winning any competitions anytime soon. The rifle is a tack-driver so a true measure of skill will take place at a range beyond 75 feet with really small targets; something which I have yet to do. I'm not into home defense or concealed carry debates since the guns I own are for recreation only. It's a lot of fun and I would recommend that everyone try it at least once in their life. It’s not for just hill-billies, gang bangers, cops, freaks, and murders. If used responsibly and respectfully the worst that will happen is a small burn from an ejected cartridge, something that happened to me only once and didn’t even hurt. Is anyone else here into target shooting? If so what do you have?

Jaz

Another expensive and sometimes embarrassing hobby I have is target shooting. How is that embarrassing? :) When you parade around with a rifle, people usually run away screaming in fear; when you parade around with a sword with huge tassles, people usually keel over laughing - now that's what I'd call embarrassing ;).

Coming from Evanston myself, I understand that living in the greater Chicago urbansprawl could definitely put the lid on backyard practise, but it isn't much different here in what is perceived as redneckland(Oklahoma).
You can't just go outside and shoot--unless, of course you live in the country, outside city zoning limits like we do;)

My husband was into competetive shooting in the army(Viet Nam) but doesn't have time for it now, plus he says his eyes are no longer what they were, but I'm hoping when he finally retires he will be able to take it up on some level.

My own hobbies are a little more peaceful--reading and gardening, indoor and outdoor, roses orchids, perenniels--if it's green I grow it--unless of course it has green skin, in which case I fireball it;)

Writer by day and writer by night. I guess it is a blessing to be paid for doing the thing I enjoy the most. Beyond that, I am just an "old"school RPG nut, who has been captivated by the genre since I sat down with my Blue Book D&D rulebook on Xmas morning, trying desperately to get my brain around this strange activity called "role-playing." ;)

Hello Lord Alex. We have some things in common. I know for a fact what blue book you're talking about : It's D&D's first edition Player's handbook, something around 1979 or so... I still have it somewhere and cherish it. It's in mint condition and that's the way I plan on keeping it. I have like 12 of them hard covered D&D 1st edition in a box.

Anyway, to keep on with the rest of the thread and by what we have in common is this : I'm an author, a novelist but not beeing paid for it. I am working on many novels, at least 5, for the time beeing. I have 8 in mind.

I'm slowly working on my 1st one and will put a lot of effort on having it published before I die... I say this because I am a PROCRASTINATOR. I think it's a disease... Some days I can do a lot and the next, I don't feel like doing anything (bipolar???)... I have a great fear of failure and have no confidence in myself... How sad. :'(

In that same line of thought, I am also a very woe filled individual and I think I have a borderline personnality... I sympathise with Amon777. I mean it. I have no ill intent in saying this. I swear. I take it one day at a time. I am greatly woe filled. I will not go in any details about this but I swear it's true. Every day I go through is though... Well, for me it is. I do not want my days to end nor do I want them to start...

On the other hand, I love Black metal music. I am not a Satanist. I do not believe in any supernatural powers but the only one that has brought life everywhere. On our planet and all around. I believe in no God but my mother. I love the sound of the voice, of black metal that is. The screaming is what attracks me to the music. Especially from Marduk's vocalist(Voice of Satan he calls himself). I love the double based drums. The hellish pace that it has and the guitar that couples it gives me goosebumps. . Marduk is a Sweedish band.
The singer's voice is beyond the grave. My favorite song ever is from that band. It's called : Beyond the grace of God. Taken from the 1996's album : Heaven shall burn when we are gathered.

Anyway, I think I've said enough.

See you on the net you guys! ;)

If I were to walk around with a rifle, or any other gun for that matter, in Chicago I would either be shot or arrested, do you know what they would do to a pretty guy like me in jail? That would be embarrassing. But on a serious note, a lot of people will think that a target enthusiast is some kind of crazy man that has an easier time talking to his guns than his peers. Illinois is a liberal state that frowns on gun ownership, luckily though, there are a few places one can go to send some lead down-range without much ado. How is gun control approached in the part of Germany you're from? For that matter, how about the places the other readers of this forum call home?

Hello Lord Alex. We have some things in common. I know for a fact what blue book you're talking about : It's D&D's first edition Player's handbook...

Aaaahhhh... those were the days. It was all so very simple then: just a pencil, some graph paper, a few dice, and your imagination. I can still in my mind's eye visualise when our party first marched bravely out of the Keep on the Borderlands. ;)

Anyway, to keep on with the rest of the thread and by what we have in common is this : I'm an author, a novelist but not beeing paid for it. I am working on many novels, at least 5, for the time beeing. I have 8 in mind.

Holy Smokes! That doesn't sound like procrastination to me. I think you suffer from the same thing I do which is: lots of ideas but the inability to "focus" on one idea long enough to see it through. This is very, very common with writers by the way. Almost every writer I know suffers from the same thing. However, on the bright side, good ideas are what set you apart from others on the streets. Coming up with a truly novel and interesting idea is a tough thing to do these days.... Turning that into a well-written novel is Step 2 and an entirely different animal unfortunately.

Good luck with your many projects! One will rise to the forefront sooner or later and when it takes hold, you'll have no problem seeing it through to completion.

Is anyone else here into target shooting? If so what do you have?

I've shot some skeet in the past, while practicing up for grouse and pheasant. I used to have a single-barrel .20 gauge Winchester (circa. 1930?) that I got from my Dad, who in turn got it from his older brother. The thing is so friggin' old that the stock is held on with tape and the targeting BB fell off, leaving a tiny hole at the end of the barrel. However, I've never EVER found a gun that shoots straighter. And when it fires, it makes a beautiful "crack" that is very distinct. It is currently in possession of my older brother, who keeps it around for sentimental value.

That would be embarrassing. I see . - Seriously, though, I know what you mean. Some hobbies are stigmatized, no matter how responsible the individual performing it. How is gun control approached in the part of Germany you're from? You need a license to carry firearms, and these are rather difficult to get depending on the type of weapon. You can unpack your rifle at the shooting range, but that's it, basically. Personally, I'm all for gun control IRL, yet I know there are responsible individuals out there who wouldn't prance around shooting passers-by even if they had the tools to do it ^_^. Admitted - I couldn't chop off heads with my tai chi jian even if I wanted to (and knowing my volatile personality I'm glad it's just for practice ;)).

@enodenroH: Lord Alex is right, losing focus is what happens to every writer under the sun time and time again. I feel it's part of the process of writing.

Lord Alex: Take that guy to a gun smith!! God only knows what else might be wrong with it; I wouldn’t shoot it until it gets a good once over. When it comes to long guns I too like the low tech route, there is something about a hinge or bolt action that's more fun than a high tech SPAZ that can clear its load in half a second. As far as competition goes, a gun that you are comfortable with and shoots well should be jealously held. In the realm of bird hunting though I think you would be better served with a semi-auto, either that or a really good eye. I like the family hand down aspect, make sure you make up a crazy story for the gun when you give it to your kids. Here’s one: Remember the time that you killed a bear just as it was about to maul a frightened lost hiker. You shot it once, but so great was its strength and bloodlust that it shook off the wound and turned on you. You were convinced that you time was near its end, but thanks to your determination and skill you were able to reload and get off another round just as the bear was leaping at you with its jaws agape. You wiped the sweat from your brow as the bear drew its last breath. It was a regrettable loss of life but it had to be done.

Jaz: I had a roommate back in my undergrad days that would practice Tai Chi in our living room with his father over the weekend. He was a skinny, lanky guy with a very deliberate gait; it was almost as if he was wrapped in a bubble that slowed and distorted the very fabric of time. Needless to say, it was quite an experience to saunter down to the kitchen every weekend and see this guy swinging a sword around with his father. Just imagine a skinny guy and his pot-bellied father discussing and training in an ancient and mysterious martial art. In addition to swordplay he really seemed to enjoy busting out his Tai Chi skills after a long night of drinking, from that I learned about the turning bear stance, quite effective. I have to admit though; he really took it seriously and seemed to know what he was doing. Funny thing I discovered from all of that was if one takes the name of a natural disaster or a ferocious animal, a movement related verb, and a potentially damaging body part they can come up with a name for a Tai Chi move. For instance: Spinning dragon kick, rising cyclone punch, or leaping tiger palm. Give it a shot.

True! Natural disasters, animals and gods are quite prevalent in the naming of moves and stances (my favorite sword stance is 'Immortal points the Way', for example). We also practice a Yang style 108 figures swordless form where moves are named 'White Crane Spreads its Wings', 'Carry Tiger to the Mountain' etc. ... while we call them 'iron a shirt' and 'ring the bell'.

Rushing earthquake forehead!

Aka. Headbutt.

And I can just imagine 2 stoned guys, one trying to yell headbutt, the other Rushing earthquake forehead. Posh name gets a broken nose, lip and lower arch. Actually, I tried this on a guy once. :D

Hobbies? Murgle gurgle hmmm Can't say I actually do something on a daily basis, or that I'd want to. Diversity is the key :)

I've been thinking of taking up Tai Chi myself...studied Goju for year but my knees just couldn’t take it any more. Besides, another style is always nice to know.

Good luck with your many projects! One will rise to the forefront sooner or later and when it takes hold, you'll have no problem seeing it through to completion.

Very well. I shall focus on only one at a time.

I'll see what I can do about it now.

Thanks for the support!

Aka. Headbutt.Yep, though I don't know of a Tai Chi headbutt yet (at least not in the two forms I'm practising) :).
And I can just imagine 2 stoned guys, one trying to yell headbutt, the other Rushing earthquake forehead.Just that you don't yell the names of the moves, especially not in a fight...Posh name gets a broken nose, lip and lower arch. Actually, I tried this on a guy once. :DOuch! I hope you won?

Besides, another style is always nice to know. And there are so many different basic styles of Tai Chi to begin with :). When I first heard it wasn't just shadowboxing but a real martial art I didn't want to believe it... until I saw my sword teacher fight his teacher (though hand-to-hand and not with swords). These guys were incredible.
As for Goju-ryu, I've never seen it performed live and in action (if you don't count Kabal in MK: Deception... in MK you may have tons of martial arts and styles, but most are rather shoddily executed), but hubby is a practitioner of Shotokan (like Sub-Zero in the same game). How do these styles compare IRL?

...

You have forever distorted my view on anime. How can you NOT yell names in fights?! That's the entire friggin point to learning martial arts!

Isn't it?

You remind me of a quote "Two brothers... One speaks no English, the other learned English from watching "The Wide World of Sports." So you tell me... Which is better, speaking no English at all, or speaking Howard Cosell?"

Why bother thinking about it, if even the English don't speak English (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IzqJtxoWzM). :p

English is different in different areas of the same country. I was watching an American documentary. The documentary had people from all different areas of America and they used subtitles for people who were interstate. It is pretty funny to put subtitles on people when they are perfectly understandable.
I personally love the accent in Fargo (not a true story, but apparrently a true accent).
American's always think Australians either sound like Paul Hogan or Steve Irwin or even worse that we have a really cockney accent "'allo Gov'nor".
Poppy Montgomery (Australian) auditoned for a role as an Australian and was told it was the worst Australian accent they had even heard?
Odd, very odd.

My hobbies (other than games) reading books, playing with my cats, watching movies, collecting Christmas ornaments and beading (sorry, I forgot what the topic was when I clicked and started reading). I also enjoy using sarcasm and embarrasing myself by thinking really stupid, inappropriate things, laughing and then not being able to tell anyone why I am laughing because they'll think I'm weird.

Hobby?O_O
It's not exacty a "hobby" you would put on a job application (or maybe you would).
That should not be considered a hobby. A life mission, an all consuming passion, the reason for existance, stress relief, an urge that has to be satisfied, the only thing better than the AFL grand final and chocolate, but it should not be categorised as a hobby. That makes it sound like a group of people getting together and saying "should we play bridge, rummy, texas hold em or have sex". There is no competition, unless the AFL grand final is on and then you have to wait until half time.
By the way, when I first read your post I thought you had written "my two other major hobbies are having sex" and I was wondering how that could be two. Good thing I re-read what you had written. I may have done another post that did not make sense.

Well, from my point of view, a hobby is something you enjoy doing in the time you are not working (excluding sleeping).
Is it as much a hobby to me as is lying in the garden watching the clouds drift by is. I wouldn't put either on my job application though :)

Point taken. Although that could open a world of possibilities for hobbies; farting, burping, reading the newspaper while sitting on the toilet, scratching your frank and beans, rating muffin tops on a scale of 1-10 when walking down the street, playing spot the G string while walking down the street...... I guess sex is a good hobby.

Hobbies and interests other than playing CRPGs...

First and foremost I love doing anything with my family... I coach my boys' soccer teams, and all that other stuff...

- I play PnP D&D with friends every month (been doing it for over 25 years)
- I am a freelance fantasy RPG writer (published)
- I enjoy building model rockets
- I love to read... almost exclusively fantasy/sci-fi
- I love music... classic, metal, progressive, alternative, classical, folk, etc
- I love watching movies... mostly sci-fi/fantasy/horror and really bad b-movies

There are other things I do in my leisure time... but that covers it pretty well
