View Full Version : Your favorite adventure games

It's been a while since I really enjoyed a good old-fashioned adventure game, and I've been having a hard time getting into them lately. Just lazy, I guess - but there are so many greats that I've missed, like the Gabriel Knight series and Beneath a Steel Sky.
But I remember how much I enjoyed them - and I wanted to make a little top-X-list thread.
So, here it goes:
1. Hero's Quest (QFG1)
2. MYST
3. Kyrandia 2
4. Loom
5. Secret of the Monkey Island

1. QFG 1 (EGA version)
2. QFG 4 (loved this game almost as much as 1)
3. Alone in the Dark (Cthulhu Mythos in a haunted mansion. What more could anyone want?)
4. Gabriel Knight 2: Best Within (One of the few Full Motion Video games that didn't suck)
5. Space Quest 6 (Loved the narrator. I believe it was the same guy from Laugh In)

1) Hero's Quest
2) Space Quest II
3) Indiana Jones and Last Crusade
4) King's Quest IV
5) Quest for Glory II
I really didn't play too many after about '94 I guess when that style started to go out of vogue.
I could never get into Myst though. Tried it several times, just didn't grab me. Like Loom, but it was too short, I finishing it in one night.

1. The Longest Journey
2. Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
3. John Saul's The Blackstone Chronicles
They're all I've played so far. Currently going through Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars - Director's Cut and I'm enjoying it.

I never saw the appeal of Myst and I love me some adventure games. Myst was just boring, imo. Call me weird, but I need more than just pretty pictures and a vague story to enjoy an adventure game.
My sister loves it though. Asks me from time to time about games like Myst being released.
+1 to QFG 2. Loved the Arabian setting. I like all the QFG series games, but I had to throw in a few other adventure titles to round it out :)

You're weird (someone had to say it),
Actually no. Although I like the Myst games (nice pictures with a vague story, being somewhere without the faintest idea about why, what and where - yay!), I also see them as games you either love or hate.

1. Indiana Jones And The Fate Of Atlantis
2. Monkey Island
3. Simon The Sorcerer
4. Kyrandia 2 : Hand Of Fate
5. Day Of The Tentacle
5. Monkey Island 2
6. The Longest Journey
7. Monkey Island 3
8. Broken Sword I
9. Ankh
10. Sam & Max
I think that's it.
I clearly prefer funny comic-like adventures. ;)
And unfortunately I haven't played as many of the old Sierra Adventures than I'd wish to (Larry Laffer, King's Quest, Gobliiins). I played through Woodruff And the Schnibble Of Azimuth, though. And quite far into King's Quest 7.
Right now, A Vampyre Story is making its way into the top 10 as well, although it's rather about riddles than about story.
Still on my "have to play" list are :
- So Blonde
- Ceville
- Gobliiins 4
- Clever & Smart
- The Westerner (aka Wanted)
- The 3 Skulls Of The Toltecs ("prequel" to The Westerner)
- Bone 1
- Jack Keane
- Jack Orlando
- Sam & Max Season One

Well, my absolute favorite adventure would be Realms of the Haunting, of course, and I also have fond memories of several Infocom titles. But if we talk of vanilla point-and-click games... hmmm...
In no particular order:
- Zork: Nemesis (liked it for the atmosphere - not very Zork, but great)
- Zork: Grand Inquisitor (liked it for the atmosphere - very Zork. 'Don't throck on the grass!')
- Kyrandia (all three of them... although Zanthia and Marco of K2 were funny, I loved Malcolm, so I was very happy with K3. 'Ooh ooh, hot hot!')
- The Dig (the score!!! The characters! Ludger Brink was the equivalent to Q4's Tech Strauss...)
- Myst IV (just to name a Myst title)
- The White Chamber (intriguing - and free - SciFi Horror title).
I played several of the LA adventures, but most weren't my cup of tea, exception see above (and I also found Full Throttle entertaining, if very short). Ah yes, and I played the first Leisure Suit Larry, the first Space Quest and the first Police Quest (no idea if there was another one after it), but the Sierra titles weren't quite my type of game, either, so I refrained from playing others after them.
The last adventure I bought was Keepsake - solid, but not great.

the first Police Quest (no idea if there was another one after it),
There were 4 of them. I remember really liking the first two, but I though the uniqueness of it wore off by the third.

Yes, I remember it. Nice adventure. :)
What I totally missed are 2 adventures : "Stupid Invaders" and ... Oh, what was the name ? The adventure with this protagonist looking as if made of clay ...

At the risk of being completely ostracized, I'll admit not playing a single adventure game (except perhaps for the original ADVENTURE on a pdp-11. ;)).

Alrik, you are suppose to list your favorite games, not all the games. ;)
I haven't really played any recent adventure games, even though there are lot of those coming out, but Monkey Island 1 is all time favorite and I also liked other Lucas Arts adventure games, like Full Throttle. And the new Special Editions of MI games are great too! :)
http://www.pixelate.de/uploads/images/another_world.jpg
And almost forget, original Prince of Persia and Another World (Out of This World). And there is out new version of Another World too! I actually contacted the developer and he was really nice on his mail. Another World was my first ever RPG and one of the first ever games I had played. Those two are great, since you don't need to understand the language (English in my case), since there is hardly any spoken language and yet they are adventure games, brilliant! ;)

"You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike", ugh…
What's sad is that there were really only a few rooms - maybe half a dozen. The maze seemed HUGE but it was just a tiny little thing!
Nobody mentioned Phatasmagoria, which is probably a good thing.
Zork was one of my favorite adventures for sure but the best would have to be Planetfall. Floyd was absolutely awesome! To this day I still mumble "Oh boy, are we going to do something dangerous now" when I save a game. And then they made me…. I had to… oh Floyd! I didn't want to do it! The devs made me… no, no I have to face the truth, it was my decision and my responsibility. <whimper> My shame!

Hmm tough one. This is not a definite list, as I haven't given it too much though:
1. Monkey Island 3.
2. Space Quest 6.
3. Space Quest 5.
4. Leisure Suit Larry 6.
5. Monkey Island 1.
6. Monkey Island 2.
7. Full Throttle.
8. Leisure Suit Larry 7.
9. Quest for Glory 5.
10. Leisure Suit Larry 1.
Looking at that list I realized I generally prefer the ones with mouse over the ones with only keyboard (trying to type every possible thing to do in a given room bored me after a while).
By the way, does Dune 1 count? If so, I'll have to squeeze it in somewhere near the top, amazing game.

I haven't played too many adventure games, so my "favorites list" is really just the ones I've played.
1. Monkey Island 1 & 2 (haven't finished the second but I plan to)
2. Still live ("life" maybe?) didn't finish it but it was amusing.
3. Eric the Unready
I never got too far into Eric the Unready because the puzzles were too much for me but I had a lot of laughs from that game. I recall a farm with a pig and for whatever reason, don't ask me why I know this, I found that if you type "fuck pig" you get a very frank note from the writer about how weird people can be (or something like that).

Shadow of the Comet was great. Any game with Vincent Price in it is already gold imo :)
There was one puzzle in there that was just horrid. It made you make your own pictures using four different chemicals, but no where in the game does it say what chemicals you will need to mix. They just assume everyone knows photography. After about an hour of guessing I finally got it right.
Other than that one puzzle it was one great game.
Prisoners of Ice isn't as good, but still a noteworthy addition to the Cthulhu Mythos.

I'm not sure how people classify adventure games, but if we stick to the games that are similar to RPGs but lack most action, I guess... Then I only played one adventure game until the end.
I played Indigo Prophecy a while back... I really enjoyed the game... Some good scenes, the fighting was shit on the PC though.
When we just got out first computer my dad bought Phantasmagoria, but we kept getting stuck at the same place for some reason. Apparently we were clicking like two pixels too high or something to activate the next scene and so that was the end of that. It did have a good atmosphere.

My favorite Let's Play on an adventure game has got to be Spoony's Let's Play of Phantasmagoria 2 (http://spoonyexperiment.com/category/lets-play/phantasmagoria/)
God that was funny and that game was horrible. I'm soooo glad I never bought that one :)
This! I played Phantasmagoria a long time ago and (if you can take the cheesy acting) it wasn't that horrible, not as horrible as its sequel, anyway. :) But the Let's Play is really funny and I'm glad to have seen how the sequel plays out.
I keep getting reminder of Rex Nubular, Microprose's attempt to cash in on Space Quest. It was okay, but Space Quest ruled my childhood, together with Police Quest and Leisure Suit Larry. I played most if not all of them.
The Longest Journey keeps itself in a few parts of my memory for the excellent world collision thing. That was *really* cool and atmospheric to play through. Dreamfall also tried with some real emotion and was partially successful. I liked Zoë.
Also not mentioned it Microprose's third game, Dragonsphere. I don't think I played it that far, but it was alright.
Sam & Max has to take first place, always. Best cartoon character duo ever made.

Which is partly my own definition of "adventures", too. Although I prefer 2D ones.
I think my experience with Simon The Sorcerer 3D was so bad it has spoiled my wish for playing adventures in 3D for many decades ...
And the orst thing of it all is, that no-one wanted to publish Simon The Sorcerer 3 ... in 2D.
It got only published, because it was made into 3D (because of lack of alternatives, because no-one wanted to publish a 2D adventure game then), because "the industry" just wanted to jump onto the 3D bandwagon - and ignored graphically superior 2D graphics at that time.
This was a sad time, when 2D was doomed to be "old" and "uncool", and "nicht mehr zeitgemäß" by press, players and publishers alike.

Depends on the subgenre.
Have you tried Amnesia? A magnificent 3D horror adventure.

Anachronox, part RPG, part adventure, lots of humour, and one of my top 5 games of all time.
For other games not mentioned, Maniac Mansion which was a precursor to Day of the Tentacle (which I never played). The Void gets my pick for most strange and beautiful game i've ever played. Darkened Skye which falls more in toward the action/adventure category (which i have much love for in the past)was an adorable adventure that had not great graphics for the time, and some fairly unchalenging gameplay but the story had lots of light hearted humour and the Skittles magic system was actually kind of cool.
Insecticide was a cool and short action adventure game i played last year.
Omikron was a remarkable an unique adventure thought admitabley I never finished it back in the day. Also by Quantic Dream — Indigo Prophecy was quite enjoyable though haven't played Heavy Rain yet as no PS3.
Much love for The Longest Journey and Dreamfall as well.
Other enjoyables though not as great are the Still Lifes and Syberia games all of which have their charms.
Oh damn (started skimming the Just Adventure review index to jog the noggin) another now now rarely mention games is Project Eden. Made by Core back in the good Tomb Raider era it had squad control, had great graphics and insanely 0 load times when it came out and it had a rather long adventure that descened in a sadely underutilized cyberpunk/dystopian setting. 4 unique squad members that could be switched out on the fly each with unique skills to solve puzzles and like a true adventure game there is no dying as your characters respawn/regen if their health runs out and all different weapons have energy that recharges.
Also looking at their index which does include some non adventure games by nearly all standards their is the Thief games which stick out as can you really call those a shooter. And the stealth genre is so inconvievabely small, not that a number of games don't offer stealth 'options' its just that the Theif games to me really are at the heart of what an "adventure" style game is, it has puzzles to solve with great atmosphere and story telling.
