Erm, you have to be bit more specific...
High-Fantasy or Sci-Fi? CRPG or Action RPG? PC or console? Paper or plastic?
You can ignore the last one :p

@Cormac
Bethesda better not screw up Fallout 3 or they'll have a horde at their gates; which, i believe, is inevitable...
gaboru93, what RPGs have you played and liked?

Mr. Pawley owes you a commission on my purchase, Sammy. It's certainly a fun game. Quick and dirty, but fun. Actually a nice alternative to a 100+ hour Wiz8 marathon. I'm still learning some of the ins and outs as I play more, particularly as weapon/armor/item kitting goes. I had to do my first "retreat all" last game. The dragon boss was pretty tough, but it was his entourage that really kicked my butt.
My submission to your tips thread:
Ghosts suck. Big, hairy donkey balls. Kill them early. Kill them often. Kill them D-E-D dead!

The beauty of the game is in it's forced purist gameplay, that there's no "trying again". You fail, that's it.
Well, kinda. Finish a game, then go back and "continue" ='.'=
Now as far as the "what item affects whose damage", that one can be tricky, and the best thing for that is to swap the item out while looking next to their portrait at their damage. Ive wasted items on mages before that have no effect on their spells. Throwing daggers are a waste, period. The best thing, bar none, in my opinion is to give your meteor-flinging mage(s) fire resistance draining items. Every hit they make, all creatures take damage on their fire resistance. 3 hits later, if anyone is still left standing, their fire resistance is like -35 and you got more coming. Have two mages going, it's over!
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-3/668811/resistance_doom.jpg
But yeah, ghosts and basilisks are two of the more dreaded creatures to face. If you get "paralyze" type items, give them to a rogue or even better a non-meteored mage (paralyze wont work with meteor) el pronto, and get the creature frozen. A "rush" can help too, never underestimate the power of a well-timed rush.
I still get hammered to this day playing the game, sometimes youre just flat out overpowered and there's not much you can do but strategically start retreating members and hoping who's left can clean up!
Strangely enough, it seems that game length increases the difficulty steeper than actual difficulty settings do. Play a short game on challenge, then play a long game. Im not talking in the long run it will be more difficult, the first stages of a "long" game will be more difficult than the first stages of a "short" game.

Well, I'm a Star Wars geek, so ...
Have you played Jedi Academy, the original Jedi Knight and its' Mysteries of the Sith expansion? All worth playing - as is Dark Forces, but that is getting older and harder to get running on XP systems.

The order is:
- Star Wars Dark Forces (1995)
- Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (1997)
- Star Wars Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith (1998)
- Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (2002)
- Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (2003)

Have you played D&D games? Like Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale series, Temple Of Elemental Evil?
I find the Gothic series are the best in the 3rd person Action-RPG genre. You could try Morrowind or *the other Elder Scroll game*. I'm sorry but I just can't use its name. It annoys the hell outta me but you may like it...

I'm not gonna rant , I'll just say that i don't hate or loathe it. I dislike it immensely. It's a good game but not worth the hype. Of course, this is just MY OPINION. If others like the game, good for them.
gaboru93, what aspects of an RPG do you like the most? The gameplay (combat), storyline, environment & immersion?
I heartily suggest the D&D games I mentioned earlier.

Other cool stuff you can find cheap:
- Rune (3D third-person hack-n-slash action game)
- Blade of Darkness (Severence in EU, a better 3D third-person hack-n-slash action game)

If old graphics don't bother you, you could play Avernum 4. It's party, turn-based, isometric/top down and HUGE. Story is stale if you've played the rest of the series, otherwise it is quite engaging. It's also less than $30 IIRC.

Unlike Dr. A, I love Oblivion. The storyline is weak and the combat is too easy without mods, but Bethesda unlike Jowood, released tools to the public with the intention that people could change what they don't like about the game. Installing two mods made Oblivion a great game for me. After upgrading my graphics card recently, I downloaded some super high-res texture mods and have started exploring the game all over.
What Oblivion aces is exploration. The game is beautiful and there are a lot of things to find. I just love a game that has so many locations to discover. I'll admit that I'm an explorer at heart. I love finding all the ruins, shrines, dungeons, caves, etc. If you set the goal of uncovering the whole map, it'll take you over 300 hours.
Do the graphics get repetitive? Yep. If they had made unique graphics for all dungeons we wouldn't have seen the game until 2010.

You´re making it pretty hard to give you detailed advice. You should tell us exactly which kind of gameplay you like. Otherwise you only get random games thrown at you.

The funny thing as I just perused the thread is that one of his first statements was that he didn't like SciFi ... then he and I had a discussion about Star Wars :D

WOW:S !!! i haven't realised this. but i think star wars is the only SciFi because you know there are film etc but exept that.... nope :D Ok Gorath,... i like RPGs more, it has to have a real time combat, exploring to do, skills and things... Monsters,...
The best games that matched these things was G1 & G2 :D(well maybe i like them most)

Based on that I definitely reiterate my Rune and Blade of Darkness recommendations.

are you really recommending rune?!?

are you really recommending rune?!?
Well ... since you put it that way ... ;) Thing is, you can get it cheap, the combat is decent, and it can be some fun - even if you constantly feel as if you are in a transition and never actually getting to the meat of the game. I would say that it is inferior to Blade of Darkness in every way, though.

Not really - a bit on the bloody and gory side - at least if you play it right ;)
