I've finally gotten around to playing Tw2. I'm pleasantly surprised by how much it was improved upon from the first one. Especially magic. It's a little complicated at first, but once I understood it I'm having a lot of fun finding out what all of the different combinations for spells are.

Even the melee combat is better. I like how if you press the spacebar you take a swing and back off. That's so much better than rolling around on the ground or flipping over your opponent. I don't mind it so much in The Witcher because ....well he's a Witcher and supposed to be agile and superhuman, but in others it gets a little annoying.

That aside, I have one problem. It involves the merchants guild and a quest for them:

I was offered the Nutricious Diet quest where you go to the mines and create a shortage of crystals so that everyone has to pay through the nose for some medicine. It's a little ironic since I just got done helping the alchemist create a cheaper Red Death cure, now I'm being asked to do the exact opposite.

My question is is there anyway to stop them or is it just accept or decline. I haven't seen much in a way of choice in this game which is too bad everything else was improved immensely. I thought about accepting and seeing if there was a choice once I got to the mines, but I highly doubt there is. I know it would take me all of 20 minutes (probably) to do this quest, but it's annoying that they gave me these choices which is just accept or decline. I would have liked a third option somewhere especially dealing with this Red Death problem. You know something along the lines of accept, decline, betray.

Oh well, there are plenty more quests where that came from.

Also I was wondering about that really large island in the middle of the map. I know that's the multiplayer map which sucks, but has anyone gone there in multiplayer? Is it interesting at all. It sucks that there is such a huge island dedicated to just multiplayer, but it's not really a big deal. I'm over 30 hours into this game and still on chapter one so it's not like they skimped out in the single player area.

The game doesn't really have choices. In that quest I simply declined to do it. You can still do other merchant's guild quests, so it doesn't block your progress or anything.

As for the large island you do go there. The game has a prologue, three main zones, then a finale section. The third main zone is on the main island, it's just not the whole thing, and the finale is on a small section of the main island as well. You can also sail to the main island and see some random places, though none of it is quest related.

Thanks Doctor. I figured my ascension in that guild was done for right then and there. Even without any real choices they could have had you do quests that raised or lowered your reputations with other guilds. At least there would be some kind of consequence for your actions. So far I've only seen quests that raise your reputation within whatever guild you are doing them for.

Thanks for the heads up on that island. I figured the whole thing was just dedicated to multiplayer. Good to know that I have a few more areas to explore. Those other two islands that are greyed out right now don't look that big at all. Take me all of 2 minutes to run around them :D

The reputation system decides when more quests spawn on the billboards, but you can skip a quest or two and it shouldn't (to my knowledge) make you miss any quests. I skipped the quest you are talking about but still had merchants guild quests when I got to zone 2, so you should be good.

It's funny but the merchant's guild quests are the most "evil" in the game.

The second zone is smaller than the first big African style island, but still pretty big and robust. I actually just got to zone 3 and then stopped playing for a while, so I can't say how big zone 3 is.

It does have some choices in some cases but it really could have had more. How you handle the penultimate quest dealing with the underworld in Hatmandor does make a difference and you have a real choice there. There's also a quest dealing with a particular monster that you can either kill or help. If you help it then it takes you to getting an item from someone else who you can either kill or talk it out of. There are a couple of quests that will trigger other quests later on only if you make one particular decision and not the other. You can also get past the gate to Hatmandor multiple ways, but that is not such a big deal since it doesn't change anything.

These sorts of situations are kind of few and far between in this game though. Anyone expecting Dragon Age: Origins level of choices and alternatives will be disappointed. Overall I still enjoyed the game though.

I agree that in the particular case of the quest the OP is inquiring about it needs some alternative other than not do it. The game made me kind of feel for the miners with the Red Death and I wanted to help them or at least not cause them further harm so an honorable alternative would have been nice.

I don't think the quests in Zone 2 are affected by doing or not doing the ones in Zone 1. Early on I water walked to Zone 2 way before I was supposed to be there and I still had access to all those quests. The only difference between not doing one is your cumulative rating with that particular guild and the perk that rating entitles you to (ie discounts).

On the big island, DN is correct that is basically there for multiple player at the moment. Since they've recently announced an expansion (presumably for the single player game) due in September, it's possible that content may get some use in the SP campaign then.
