I was browsing through steam and came across this game called Railworks 2. Its a train simulator. I had great fun back in the day with railroad tycoon. Has anyone played this game? If it's a game similar to Tycoon I think I would enjoy it, but it's a pretty steep price, and I would hate to end up having it suck. I am hoping someone who has it can let me know how the game is, how it plays, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Railroad tycoon is a real time sink. Such games tend to steal more time from you than any other (rpg) game.
While I don't know about railworks 2, you might want to try out transport tycoon deluxe,
http://www.openttd.org/en/
It also includes boats, airplanes, etc. (but the trains are the best :) ) and is a bit more cartoony than railroad tycoon. It is totally free now. If you own the game, you can use the original (graphic) data, but there are also good free ones available (and included in the installer).

Transport Tycoon Deluxe is one of the best games ever made IMHO. Fantastic! Anyone who haven't tried it should.
As for the railworks 2… that's an entirely different kind of game I think… it is a train simulator.. kind of like if you enjoy playing with your own hobby trains?…. at least that is what I think…… nothing like railroad or transport tycoon.

From the description of it I thought it was similar to Rollercoaster Tycoon where you could build the park but also ride the rides. I thought this game was where you had to deliver on the routes but could drive the train if you wished. It seems it is more about driving the trains than anything else. For that price I will pass. Maybe if it drops to a $10 game in the future I will give it another look. Thanks for the replies. I did d/l Transporter Tycoon Deluxe. Thanks for the tip.

Grab Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe:
http://www.openttd.org/en/
It's basically an open source version of TTD with lots of added support etc. I consider TTD one of the greatest sim classics of all time, and I assume that's why they decided to actually remake it as an open source project.

Hehe, Maylander read the thread before posting :P you almost copied another post.....
railworks 2 is indeed a 'driving' simulator, so you probably don't want that (and is boring anyways).

TTD is too addicting for its own good, last year I rediscovered openTTD for the umptieth time and lost another two months building my uber empire ;-) And if you get bored with the official version, you have several total conversion that add tons of different locomotives, stations, more signals, more realistic physics (e.g., traction, double-locomotive, etc..), and much more. It is indeed one of the best games ever GG :-)
You also have simutrains,

which is more modern than TDD and is built from scratch. It takes a more serious approach and also seems quite fun. However, last I tried it it needed a decent CPU. It ran too slow on mine to be enjoyable.
Both should get you going for another year or 5, come back when you need more :p

Agreed! Ah, Transport Tycoon, what fond memories I have of you...
I didn't know of the OpenTTD version. I'll definitely have to check that out!
Damn, so many games, so little time...

Anyone know what Chris Sawyer is doing these days?
I have no idea. His website looks a bit shoddy and nothing on wikipedia. The latest info I found is a settlement between him and Atari in 2008.
