don't know if anyone is familar with the mid-late 90's band from the u.k. dubstar. i love sarah blackwoods' voice and own all there cds. i had never seen this video before to probably their most well known song and stumbled onto it last night.

Dubstar is excellent. I think my copy of "Goodbye" (http://www.amazon.com/Goodbye-Dubstar/dp/B000002GNV/sr=1-1/qid=1172411046/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-0083645-6965666?ie=UTF8&s=music) is an OOP item now. Equal helpings of 80s new wave, dreamy swirls, and pretty vocals make for an enjoyable mix. While "Stars" was initially my favorite track, I've since gravitated toward "View from Here" and "Anywhere".
Client reminds me a fair bit of Ladytron, although probably not as good.
Thanks for the videos.

What in the heck was that, abbaon? Not saying it was bad at all (fairly decent, in fact), but I'll admit I have no idea what was going on. The crowd seemed to be having a blast, though.
Public service announcement: Ether Aura has posted a new track from the new cd on MySpace. Good song, reminds me of All About Eve in some spots.
Currently listening for me: Bought the Cure's Festival 2005 dvd yesterday, so I'm on a binge. My favorite Cure song is not included on the set list, but #2 is- "A Strange Day".

I'm listening to the Hotel Dusk (DS) 'soundtrack', which is just the stuff ripped from the game - you can check it out here (http://buttonbasher.wordpress.com/2007/02/06/hotel-dusk-soundtrack-download/).
Seeing as Nintendo hasn’t really made a big push to promote Hotel Dusk Room 215 (Nintendo DS), it’s probably safe to say that they do not plan to release a soundtrack to retail. Luckily a few Neo-GAF users (myself included) have ripped and titled each song from the game and made them available for download. The entire .zip file is 64MB (shouldn’t be a problem for most of you, but with my cruddy machine, I was faced with a 4 hours download).
Love the game, love the soundtrack ...

Now listening to Hawkwind - Space Ritual...
If you have never listened to Hawkwind and you like space rock/psychedelic rock (like early Pink Floyd with Syd Barret *RIP*), you will love them...
Trivia for those interested... Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead played bass and did some vocals for Hawkwind for a couple of years before he was kicked out of the band for getting busted for drugs. He even wrote the hawkwind song "Motorhead" which is where he got the idea for the name of his new band. He also did vocals on one of their biggest UK hits - Silver Machine.
Good stuff!

This is pre-female vocals Gathering, and definitely way different, and way heavier than their newer stuff. I read comparisons between this cd and Therion's "Symphony Masses:Ho Drakon Ho Megas" and I think that's quite an accurate comparison. The weird sort of ultra-distinct quasi-kabbalistic eastern-tinged keyboard-laced rolling double-bass double-bass blackish metal. It's just... weird, it's a very unique metal sound, but always extremely heavy. Has the gruff death vocals, and a hint of female vocals here and there for flourish, but no full sections.
I love it personally, it has a different feel than the typical occult-drenched type of music of this vein. It's kult, but it's more ceremonial magic, Temple of Solomon type kult feel than pseudo-pagan or straight out diabolic.
Also have been getting into Pentagram's "Be Forewarned". (http://www.amazon.com/Be-Forewarned-Pentagram/dp/B000ALLLGQ/ref=sr_1_3/104-7161972-6112758?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1172947741&sr=8-3) I usually dont listen to much Stoner Doom, but this cd has really grown on me, it's actually very grim.

Liked that one dte--I can see actually owning this music. The Marine Timekeepers not so much. The moodiness here is more my style.
I really like that Ani DiFranco bit that abbaon posted as well. I wonder about the svenska version tho--like maybe the singer altered the lyrics a bit to get that level of response.o_o
Samhain--you can only listen to 30 seconds of your Gathering stuff, and not at all to the Pentagram cuts. But I liked what I heard, which was mostly intro and just a little gruff male vocal. Must be that "weird sort of ultra-distinct quasi-kabbalistic eastern-tinged keyboard-laced rolling double-bass double-bass " thing.

Had a chance to listen to your rec, Jazzy. It's actually not bad if I'm in a new wave mood. The German lyrics still throw me though--it's so distracting as my mind stubbornly tries to grab bits and pieces to translate.
@magerette- I'm a regular fanboi for Ether Aura, so I'd certainly encourage such a purchase. Their first cd, "Crash", is a bit better IMO, but the pop leanings of the new one, "Before We Could Sing" make it more accessible (and probably preferable) to the non-gazer public. I'd recommend both cds without reservation.
Nothing stuck in my head yet this morning. Perhaps later...

i tried real hard to find you guys some non 30 seconds clips of this great band from the past 92-2001--chainsuck. shoegaze, goth, and some industrial sounds all why being very listenable. i've owned both of their albums for about 6 years but i've never really known their history. apparent one of the members died though and that is why they didn't release any more albums. the link is to their second album and i'd suggest just letting the amazon player play through all the short clips to get a feel for them. the great thing though is you can usually pick either of their cds for dirt cheap which is great on top of both albums full of all good tunes.

How Like a Winter - Beyond My Grey Wake
It was pretty hard to get my paws on this cd, but it was worth the trouble IMHO, it's nice to hear a good "real" gothic metal cd. There has been this sort of new bullshit convention that's come about, that ANY metal that features female vocals is gothic metal. Im sorry, that's just not the case. Nightwish is a good band, but they arent gothic metal, neither is Evanescence, or Leaves Eyes. There's no tragedy in their music, no dark romance, and theyre missing the harsh distorted, otherworldly male vocals, that's half the equation right there. True, their women paint their faces stark white in publicity photos, but that's about the extent of it. While it's true that there's a bunch of good "real" doomy gothic metal out there, Ive burned thru a good deal of it. This band is like a cross between two of my favorite bands in the genre, Theatre of Tragedy and Trail of Tears. Good stuff!
Up until this morning I thought the name of the band was Beyond My Grey Wake and the cd was titled "How like a Winter", when it's actually the other way around. This seems to be the way the band is referred to online here and there, and it's led to much confusion.

Is it dreampop, neo new wave, or electro disco revival? Who cares. Gotta love Ladytron. Whenever I hear this song, I always get a flashback of the Talk Talk video from back in the day (showing my age again) with the drummer flipping his ponytail back and forth to the beat as he pounds away. two good examples/favourites from their last full length full length album. the dreamy synthpop side and the humourous dancable synthpop side. they've been around since 1999 and their 3rd full length is coming out in the next few months or so. their following has gotten massive over the years because one of the 3 members has been the lead composer at harmonix studios for years and pumped out frequency, amplitude, guitar hero, etc. and thus a freezepop song is on everyone of those games...pure marketing genius. also i highly recommend his side project symbion project which is far superior to dj shadow in my opinion if you like that kind of music.

Freezepop comes up on the Vertigo station from time to time. Not bad, but a little too garage/punk to put above Ladytron in my book. Of course, I've beaten it to death that I usually prefer my music smooooooth, even when it's 120bpm. I think they're working on some sort of distribution, but I don't think they've got any agreements yet (unless toneVendor has bought up a handful to resell). Their first cd is available from toneVendor (as you might be figuring out, I love toneVendor for quality of experience as well as quality of selection), from the record label (gaia project records), from cdbaby.com, and (I would assume) directly from the band.
It was tough when I was living in Chickasha, OK. Definitely hard to get any sort of music that wasn't country. I remember the day we were moving back. We had been packing the Uhaul all day long and went to Pizza Hut about 8:00. They rolled up the streets at 9, so I don't think they were particularly happy to see us so close to closing. Being tired and cranky, Mrs dte and I decided to get a little feisty. We went to the jukebox, paged thru the entire catalog, and located the single album that wasn't "tear in my beer country hick twang", which just happened to be Ozzy. They actually unplugged the jukebox mid-song... :rotfl:
PSA- Tearwave's debut cd can now be purchased from their record label at Projekt.com. If you've liked anything I've posted in the past, just do yourself a favor and go place your order. :) Supposedly they've got a new song up at myspace, but I haven't looked yet.

That was April of 1996. I'm sure the oversight has been corrected by now.
I liked Chickasha. It was only 45 minutes up the turnpike to civilization in OKC, and they had excellent restaurants for such a small town. As it worked out, I should have stayed with Delta Faucet out there much longer, although that plant is closed now. I just had a hard time adjusting to they way they used country music in place of elevator music. Go to the grocery store-tear in my beer. Go to the bank-my woman done left me. Go to the Chinese restaurant-boot scootin boogie done on sitars (or whatever the oriental version of a sitar is). It's just wrong, I tell ya. It was hilarious watching the kids cruise the main drag. Coming from Indy, I was used to hearing the kids' cars all thumping away with rapcrap. There, all the pickups were blaring Garth Brooks as they drove in circles.

Garth is from here, ya know. He has a pretty major street named after him, and it's only luck that the town is still called Yukon (and why?? Yukon, Oklahoma--don't ask me. It's not even in north ok) There are plenty of rapsters and hopphippers these days, though. I don't mind a good cry in my beer song, as long as I have plenty of beer to cry in. My favorite alltime is

even better, they have three full albums worth of mat'l, and they all seem to stay true to my winning formula. In the back of my mind I think that I intentionally avoided them for this reason, to provide me with a musical B12 shot in a time of dire need. Like now ='.'=
I have all three cds here, but I'm resisting the temptation and starting with their first one, and waiting til I have it fully absorbed before I move on to their later stuff. Alls I can say is that right off the bat, first time I listened, I had it cranked up and was tapping my paw pretty much the whole way thru - that's very rare that my hyper-critical and jaded self gets into the groove that quick with a new cd. The beginning of a beautifully dreadful relationship I think

For the past couple days, I've been spinning Malory's "Outerbeats". Wonderful stuff, even if they probably should pay royalties to Slowdive. Standout tracks have been "Lake of Doubts" and "I Can't Stand". Clips here (http://cdbaby.com/cd/malory2), although the compression is brutal on the tone.
And, y'all can start breathing again. I got my Tearwave cd tonight. Oh yes, there shall be much rejoicing. Also finally got the latest from Autumn's Grey Solace, but it will probably have to wait for a day or two.

draconian - where lovers mourn
This is the perfect gothic doom cd in my opinion, equal parts romance, sorrow, misanthropy, death, and even some HP Lovecraft. Every single song is great!
On my third listen today
"Now I ride with the mocking and friendly ghouls on the night wind, and play by day in the catacombs. I know that light is not for me, save that of the moon. I know always that I am an outsider, stranger in this century, and all time. Stranger among those who are still... men."

Erin McKeown's "standards" album (http://www.amazon.com/Sing-You-Sinners-Erin-McKeown/dp/B000KX0HVO) has introduced me to some wonderfully silly jazz. Sadly, her outsize talent doesn't quite stretch to her vocals, so I'm listening to other people's recordings. They don't write 'em like this (http://www.sewingstars.com/songs/blossom%20dearie%20-%20Track%2009.mp3) anymore. (And we're poorer for it.)

The cool thing - aside from Jonas Hellborg's monster bass chops, is that Paul Hanson is a bassoon player! Yep, a bassoon, bass and drums jazz trio ... and they really play the crap out of it in this show!

I like Paradise Lost's first cd, it's one of my faves.
This one sounds good musically, but the vocals arent really to my liking. The guy sounds like he's trying his best to emulate James Hetfield from Metallica, and he doesnt do the death growl at all, which I really have grown to like, at least here and there for accent. I'm searching for a little female vox here and there, but not finding any either, unless you count the opening wail on enemy.
It's still far preferable to most new metal littering the airwaves!

@ xSamhainx: I don't think that Nick tries to emulate, copy or imitate anyone, let alone Hetfield. They have a similar tone, hence the similarity. Other than that, I honestly believe Holmes is a lot better singer than Hetfield. Tastes are different, of course.
Dunno about female vox on the new album, but we'll see. I don't regard it as a must as long as the songs are awesome, which they are! I'm completely hooked on these new songs and can't wait for the album. Which reminds me of the fact that I should pre-order it straight away.

well, here's their audio page if you want to try some out.

Theyre doom metal, but they incorporate a lot of gothic stylings such as keyboards, female and choiric vocals, clean and death male vocals, and romantic themes. They speed things up a bit now and then, but the dirge is their usual speed.
Of the 3 of their cds, I still like their first, "Where Lovers Mourn" the best. Their follow up, "Arcane Rain Fell" is 80% concept album featuring the story of Lucifer's fall from Heaven. This is the cd everyone raves about, yet I'm just not too crazy about it personally. It has some good songs, but it just hasnt grabbed me like the other two have. Their last cd, "The Burning Halo" is really good and my second favorite, it's basically them doing covers and a few of their own unreleased original songs.
Theyre a pretty solid gothic doom band, Ive gotten quite a bit of mileage out of their 3 cds. Listening to The Burning Halo for the second time today right now as a matter of fact!

Currently listening to RUSH's newest album "Snakes and Arrows". Yes... I am a RUSH head from way back. Go ahead... I can take the jabs at my musical taste.
The album is quite good. Of course you have to listen to it in its entirety several times to get a taste for it. They've tried some new things and it mostly works. It's definitely not their best album, but for a band that's been together for over 30 years it's pretty good (you must know that my opinion of most bands that have been together for that long is usually pretty low - rock bands seem to mellow and become quite lame as they age - but RUSH has stayed fairly consistent within their realm of progressive rock IMO).

Rush are kinda hit and miss with me. Absolutely loved (and still do) 2112 and Caress of Steel, but starting with Farewell to Kings I just didnt like their direction much anymore.
For me, it's all about the 2 cds that hold their 3 most epic songs: The Necromancer, Temple of Lamneth, and 2112. All 3 of those songs are true classics, i love every note!
All the songs on both cds are good of course, but those 3 are the fantasy-drenched epic types that I just wish they would have done their whole career.

Metalllica - St Anger (http://www.watchtvsitcoms.com/Music/metallicast.anger.php)
Giving it another spin because it's free, online. Some nice riffs, but it just aint soundin like yer daddy's Metallica. I dunno if it's legal, the site says it is, but looks a little dubious if you ask me. Someone at work has the whole office listening and watching movies on this site, even current movies like the new Shrek, Spiderman, even 300 etc. Lots of stuff there http://www.watchtvsitcoms.com/
EDIT-Definitely a bad cd, by most any measure that I can think of.
St Anger has been savaged by pretty much everyone and their gramma thus far, and rightfully so. Ive tried to be fair with it, but it's a downright painful listen even for those who arent stinging from the fond memories of "the good old days". Metallica was obviously going for a thrash metal (hardcore punk+speed metal) sound, and to their credit, there is some decent riffage to be found here at times. Unfortunately it's all too brief and utterly spoiled by the lamest (and all-too-clear) lyrics, laughable vocals, and what appears to be the sound of a garbage can lid being used for a drum thru the entire cd. It physically gave me a headache!
Just a truly pathetic cd. No wonder the band had a fucking breakdown after they released this thing.

@Sammy: Hey, that was pretty solid stuff! Far more poppy and melodic than I was expecting from my favorite gloomster. Don't have time to listen to everything tonight but "Forever Fades Away" was quite good. Standup bass in a rock band? Gedowdaheh.
@mageoffire: too disjointed for my ear, but awful darn close to the noisy end of shoegaze. Have you ever sampled Jesus and Mary Chain and/or My Bloody Valentine?

Listening to some free Clark Ashton Smith spoken word MP3's (http://www.eldritchdark.com/). One of HP Lovecraft's homies, he wrote alot of stuff in the same vein. Worth a listen, theyre free, and good to put on an MP3 player or something.
@dt-yeah, theyve actually mellowed out quite a bit. They used to be far more psychobilly punk (50's rockabilly sound sped up), and more into the horror thing. As time's passed, starting on their 3rd cd "Ghost Tigers Rise", theyve sorta mellowed and went more straight rock and roll. It's all good tho, because they maintain their quality even tho stylistically changing, so I stick with them. Unlike most bands, who cant make a change without just destroying their core sound or even turning out quality jams anymore.
Incorporeal - Old Tiger Army style (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1FYrSj_wrU) Awesome lyrics, prolly one of my top 3 fave songs by them.

Fired up my shoegaze radio for the first time in a while. Had a good time with Ladytron (as usual when it comes up), but the song that stuck was:
"Turn to Real Life" by Shiny Toy Guns
I think the group might have hit the pop scene based on the number of listens on their MySpace page, but I'm not sure. I would say TtRL is a fair bit different from the stuff I saw on MySpace last time I looked.
Edit--Found a FF video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uPlKdjTRdo) that uses the song. Not bad video work, actually.
Edit #2- Since I was having such luck, I searched for and found a video for the Ladytron track as well here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rU_5XKP_NM)

I don't get what's with this sample... it sounds like a demo or something, with really unskilled production -- vocals too prominent, accompaniment lost in the mix. The actual track makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, just Mandy and piano -- lovely.

@Gig- welcome to the joy of low-sample-rate clips. Think of a handful of beatuiful fall leaves...now pack them into a shot glass...kinda loses something. The compression can make some songs nearly unrecognizable. With shoegaze being based on the interplay of a couple dozen layers at any given instant, you can imagine the horror I go thru when the best I can find for a clip is Amazon or the like. Of course, Amazon has a bazillion clips, so you've got to give them some credit.

This is some of his early stuff recently released and shows much more structure than later work. Great to hear the origins.
Live music by Bill Frisell - pulled from a radio broadcast, this is from the late 90's and is another recent digitization from tape. Pretty straight-ahead stuff from a guy who used electronic effects pretty heavily in creating layers of sound in his usual jazz guitar stuff.

some good stuff on their hiddenx but vertigo...ahh...it killed what was the longest relationship i've had with a band. its not that the song is too horrible, but hearing it everywhere makes me want to construct an atomic bomb shelter and hide there:)
offspring can pull off spanish in their songs, but hearing bono speak spanish is riduculus.

For me "Vertigo" is a return to the good old - U2 guitar rock - from the '80s.
In the '90s the music of U2 was sometimes too artifcial for my ears.

hey dte you mentioned you liked all bedazzled but i haven't heard you mention mistle thrush before. their first release was on bedazzled and they too are a bostonian band as well. i justed checked up on their site and two of their albums are available free for download. some of the distortion effects don't live up to the cd quality but if you haven't heard them take advantage of some good free tunes. i always liked this song.

Live music by Bill Frisell - pulled from a radio broadcast, this is from the late 90's and is another recent digitization from tape. Pretty straight-ahead stuff from a guy who used electronic effects pretty heavily in creating layers of sound in his usual jazz guitar stuff.
Love Frisell's music. I've listened to his stuff for years. Have most everything he has released himself, have most everything he did with Zorn and about four or five albums by Paul Motian which he plays on. ("Paul Motian in Tokyo" being a favorite.)
Listening to "Unspeakable" right now which reminds me more of his older stuff than it does his newer stuff. It's one of my favorites by him. (A few other favorites being "Gone Like a Train", "Nashville" and "Lookout for Hope".) If you are looking for music that "has neither tonality or rhythm" then give Frisell's "Richter 858" a try. I've only made it through that CD a few times.

Totally different subject and I know some one here can help me out. The other night I was watching CSI and the episode concerned the serial killings of unknown women, called "Jane Does'. In the course of the show, they had several "jane " tracks by various artists, but it ended with one I'd really like to find.
It was a very slow, sad, ballad-ish tune, smoky female vocalist, subdued accompaniment but obviosly contemporary, and the chorus was "Sweet, sweet Jane.."
Can anyone ID it for me?

Thank you, HiddenX. That's exactly the cut I was talking about. Actually the episode had the Velvet Underground(what a time trip:) )version as well. I ought to have known it was a Lou Reed song.
Margo Timmins' voice is indeed haunting. Enjoyed both additional cuts, and will be looking for a CD.

@Gig- you just have a thing for husky male vocals, don't you?
@HiddenX- Cowboy Junkies! Excellent call.
@magerette- Supposedly, "The Trinity Sessions" is their pinnacle. Recorded live with a single mic in an abandoned church. Pretty sure they put out a greatest hits collection a while back --took a look, and none of the 3 collections is that great--. I bought the cassette of "Lay It Down" for Common Disaster back in the day. I think you'll really like it. Disaster is probably the most poppy track; the rest has a definite western drawl to it.

Yeah, one of these days I'm going to have to move into the 21st century. The only nice thing about a cd is that if it's good stuff, you get more into the band and their whole approach when you play all those tunes in sequence. I like it for the car--keeps my road rage down. :)

You can do that digitally as well. I tend to buy 'full album' on iTunes as well, and do playlists linearly by artist, then date, then by track number within each album (and no, I do not number my underwear ... ). That way I get the experience within the original context ... or I can just shuffle the whole 4500 songs for a nice random experience.

Plus, if you use an iPod and iTunes, you can access the albums you download right from the menu without doing any additional formatting. The original track order comes from iTunes automatically.
My iPod is where all my music lives, I always have it with me. I plug it in when I get in the car and it's been absolutely ages since I've wanted to listen to a song that I didn't have available. That was my problem with the original CD player in my car, I never seemed to have the CD I was jonesing over with me. And, if I only wanted to hear one song, I would have to change the CD while driving or else just deal. For me, a media player is a much better solution. ;)

Now playing - Michael Brecker - Pilgrimage (http://www.amazon.com/Pilgrimage-Michael-Brecker/dp/B000OHZJA0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-9253945-8665768?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1184083094&sr=8-1)
My thoughts: if you listen to this and put it into the wider context of jazz you would likely say "solid performances by Mike and his good friends who were obviously supporting him while he was dying. Some good stuff in a framework that was done better in Brecker's '86 self titled work - a definite buy for fans of Brecker, but others could do better with other picks from his catalog".
This is something that triggers real sentimental feelings for me - it is a pretty good CD but not up there with the best of any of the band members.

(*)Till Eulenspiegel and the Innkeeper at Cologne
Eulenspiegel journeyed to Cologne, where he stayed at an inn for two or three days without letting anyone know who he was. During this time he noticed that the innkeeper was a rogue, and he thought, "The guests will not be well off where the innkeeper is a rogue. You should find another place to stay."
That evening he told the innkeeper that he would be looking for another place to stay. The latter showed the other guests to their beds, but not Eulenspiegel, who then said, "Sir, I paid just as much for my lodging as the others did, but you showed them to their beds. Am I supposed to sleep here on this bench?"
The innkeeper said, "Look! Here is a pair of sheets!" and he let a fart. Then he let another one and said, "Look! This is your pillow!" Then fo
