are always a good starting point for reviews.

At my (very hypothetic) wedding I could ask this question:
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Do you love me ? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOiUPl5GjTE)

Nick Cave & Blixa Bargeld - Where the Wild Roses Grow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eGVPbdv-3I)

... and I hope I'll not end like this:

reviews of movies or games i can usually grab enough information to go on. but as far as music goes i almost always like to base it off of a 'living' reference.

thats a sweet name at the very least. i'm trying out an emusic program for a month so i'll see if its on there. if not i'll add it to my ebay search list. thanks for the rec.

For the younger ones on this board:

- The Time Warp Lyrics

It's astounding, time is fleeting
Madness takes its toll
But listen closely, not for very much longer
I've got to keep control

I remember doing the Time Warp
Drinking those moments when
The blackness would hit me and the void would be calling
Let's do the time warp again...
Let's do the time warp again!

It's just a jump to the left
And then a step to the right
With your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight
But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane,
Let's do the Time Warp again!

It's so dreamy, oh fantasy free me
So you can't see me, no not at all
In another dimension, with voyeuristic intention
Well-secluded, I see all
With a bit of a mind flip
You're there in the time slip
And nothing can ever be the same
You're spaced out on sensation, like you're under sedation
Let's do the Time Warp again!

Well I was walking down the street just a-having a think
When a snake of a guy gave me an evil wink
He shook me up, he took me by surprise
He had a pickup truck and the devil's eyes.
He stared at me and I felt a change
Time meant nothing, never would again
Let's do the Time Warp again!

a few years ago i heard a track i love my man on the faithless back to mine compilation. i then picked up another comp by faithless the bedroom sessions not to long after with swollen and even better song. these 2 songs got me very interested in the band who made them, bent who i had never heard of. all i could find was a 2 disc single set. then i ran across a copy of an actual album ariels 6 months ago but never listened to it. i put it on my zen though and last month on the long drive to and from oregon i listened to it a few times. it was awesome and as lovely as the landscapes around me. a few days ago i nabbed another album - the everlasting blink. while not one of my favourite songs of there's this is an enjoyable video.

If you can track down a copy of "In Your Room" (track off the W&K eps), grab it--you'll thank me for 10 minutes of bliss. Don't know if you're aware, but "Firefly" was done with a guest vocalist. Slayer - Necrophiliac (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=95367384)

Mortuary, dead of night
my body starts to rise.
In my mind the horror lives,
to feel death deep inside.
Relentless lust for rotting flesh,
to thrash the tomb she lies
heathen whore of satan's wrath
I spit at your demise.

I remember reading those words (and the rest that follow) for the first time back in the 80's, and just reeling. This is after the terrifying (to a christian-raised child) opening track "Hell Awaits", the shocking onslaught of murder in "Kill Again", and the freakin totally creepy "At Dawn they Sleep". I didnt even know what necrophilia was, it had never crossed my mind really. I was a horror kid, but it was something that I was always an observer of, never so much a participant of. I definitely had never messed with the sacred icons of judeo-christian religion, not directly anyway.

Slayer had kicked my ass, and hard. Harder than any band had ever before, and probably harder than any since.

There was Iron Maiden, and Metallica, and what have you, and while they were not a cheery bunch, they werent outright demonic. They didnt make me feel like my very soul was condemned for all eternity by virtue of finding myself merely hearing them. Slayer, these mofos were playing for keeps.

I remember when my Mom found my Hell Awaits record, and read the lyrics. Actually, I think that she herself was posessed by Satan for a very short time as she began screaming in tounges and chasing me around!

Ah yes, good ol' Slayer ='.'=

It's them playing Reign in Blood in it's entirety, live, with Dave Lombardo back on drums. In fact, that Angel of Death video is from it. They dont cheese out either, you know how some bands tend to shorten songs or toss out the solos or whatever, they play it fully. Not saying it's flawless tho, I noticed a few messed up lines, but overall it's done well. The slowdown between Altar of Sacrifice and Jesus Saves comes off pretty fat and groovy, sounds cool, and he screams out the last verse of Criminally Insane like a madman. Then, the coup de grace, the grand finale, they have a shower of blood raining down on them during Raining Blood. The place goes berzerk. I went berzerk. My neighbors hate me now!

The "bonus tracks" (necrophiliac, war ensemble, hallowed point, like 4 songs from South of Heaven) appear to be the first part of the show. Then, they launched into "Reign.." . There's a pretty cool interview on there with all of them too.

Here's (http://www.freemoviescinema.com/content/view/665/89/)another interview/concert footage with Tom Araya for some BBC special on thrash metal. Napalm Death is on there too, but they suck imho.

Ive never seen them live actually, weve just never crossed paths. Theyre playing here in San Diego next month, suprisingly with Marilyn Manson. I dont know how the hell that happened. All I can say is this - Marilyn better hope (s)he's playing second!

Thinking of going with my friend Erik (50 bucks a ticket??), but were sitting up top tho if we go. I dont mosh, I'm there to see the band, you know. Especially if I pay 50 bones.

OKX: A Tribute to OK Computer (http://www.stereogum.com/okx/)

This is fantastic, because the artists tapped to contribute took their responsibilities seriously. Instead of recapitulating the original recordings (FROWN (http://www.amazon.com/Im-Your-Fan-Various-Artists/dp/B000002ISX)), they demonstrated real understanding by preserving the essence of the song in a new form. Mostly. There are a few copycats. Mobius Band takes the prize for ballsiest interpretation. (It's amusing to see how many people thought what the original needed was a driving beat.) If someone can bring this to curious' attention, I think he'd love it.

Pink Floyd - The Wall

This is one of the best, if not the best album I've ever heard. What I love about it is that I cannot seem to be able to listen to just some of the songs of it. I always have to listen to it from start to finish. The movie made for the album is also nice. If I were to select a song from it, it would have to be Comfortably Numb. David Gilmour's guitar solo is brilliant, imo.

My latest acquisition:

Trio of Doom (http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/B000QEIM7S/ref=s9_asin_image_2-1966_g1/002-3098861-5807261?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=0ZWMJARN4Q6YRZ4CC2GR&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=278240701&pf_rd_i=507846) - what a force, three of the greatest musicians ever team up for a live performance! John McLaughlin, Jaco Pastorius and Tony Williams ...

But the CD, while I love it, brings 'uneven' to a whole new level - brilliance, when unsynchronized, is often wasted and unfocused. The story from McLaughlin of the fights between them - caused by the self-destructive Jaco - are fun to read.

I have seen all three of these guys in different setting, and have seen some brilliant pairings of talent on the 'summer jazz fest' tours of the 80's, but couldn't imagine having seen this ...

Lot of drama in that band. Half the group sued the other half or some such, and the sue-ers weren't allowed to play with the sue-ees during their Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

My coworker Dewayne has written a new song and, in spite of all common sense, wants me to play keyboards on it, so I've been playing the song a lot the past few days trying to figure out what in the hell I'm going to do.

We were working on a photo-DVD my wife was making for our nephew and she wanted this song so I pulled out an old 80's collection CD set we have. I haven't heard this in years, but always appreciated that it is a truly wonderful song. Miles Davis did a wonderful version and it became somewhat of a standard for him in his final years. Lauper really nuances the vocals in a way that current pop singers seem incapable of doing.

any of the other "crosleys" would cause you to have a hokey set up transfering sound from speaker output or headphone outputs which would lower the quality i believe. they probably leave the audio outputs off so you have to buy the top shelf ones if you want that feature. of course you can probably pick up a decent for modern record player for under 100 that has some rca plugs if that's all you want it for.

Yeah, the Crossley we have does have RCA outs which I have into my PC based audio setup with Adobe Audition as the processing software. That works pretty well for handling most stuff. That co-worker of mine is actually setting up an internet business doing audio conversions. I've got a worn out Figures on a Beach cassette from the 80's that he converted to cd for me--the results were astounding. Of course, he's running some pretty high-end equipment thru a mixing board to clean it all up, so it's a pretty time-consuming (aka expensive) process. Certainly can't knock the results, though.

@mike: IIRC, 8 of 10 tracks off Thriller were released as singles and hit the top 40. That's amazing when you really think about it. I think "Meet the Beatles" only spawned 4 singles and that was a world-mover.

This is in far the most creative work I've ever listened to in my whole life - but it's definitively nothing for "cloth-eared nincompoops", as the back cover states, it is especially not for the lighthearted ones.

@dte: read this today and it made me think of you--now we finally know the true purpose of country music:

The old Argus radio blasted country music from the corner speaker, and the tones of the pedal steel guitar reverbererated off the expansive curved roof of the hangar. Country music had played constantly since 1982 when Billy discovered it kept the pigeons from roosting in the rafters and shitting on the planes. He had tried classical music and rock n roll, but the birds seemed to enjoy both. There was something about country music that made them stay airborne.

That Agalloch was pretty cool, kinda trippy stuff. Long intros rule. My ideal song has like 3 minutes of music before a note is sung!

I love long songs. "A Change of Seasons" by Dream Theater or "Blackwater Park" by Opeth or "Still Remains" by Fates Warning. (for example)

But back to agalloch. That song is from their new album "Ashes against the grain" - it is very good - but the previous album "The Mantle" is a masterpiece, the highpoints include "In the shadow of our pale companion" (15min song) and "You were but a ghost in my arms" (10min song). Exellent songs, Excellent album, Excellent artist.

Check it out.

Really powerful stuff and a great listen. I missed his other two Blue Note releases, seems time to go back and fill in my collection a bit ...

Good to hear you like it. I was interested in grabbing this disc myself. I think his Jazz in Film disc is the best he has done so far. Wandering Moon and Flow are two of his other cds I listen to a lot. Also saw him perform live shortly after Wandering Moon was released. Was a great performance.

Love listening to Bill Evans also. Letter to Evan (http://wc04.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:axfyxqyhldae) is one of my favorites by him. Then again, I tend to listen to his later stuff more than his earlier stuff.

If you like Jim Hall and/or Pat Metheny I recommend giving this a try - Jim Hall & Pat Metheny (http://wc04.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:w9fyxqwkld0e). My wife remains a huge U2 fan, and while I stopped liking Bono ages ago Joshua Tree has some really good tunes on there. It helps, perhaps, that I don't listen to words as a general rule ... just the musical effect of the singer. This one still works for me, but their later stuff is weak-sauce and my 'How to Dismantle' they were completely useless in every regard.

I don't know that I can lose Bono in the mix, though. Some comedian on Bob and Tom had a bit imitating Bono singing "Bingo" (there was a farmer who had a dog...) that's now inseperable from the real guy for me.

Been listening to Leaves' Eyes, album "Vinland Saga." The album is a story of the Viking excursion to Newfoundland. The concept sounded pretty cheesy to me at first, but the more I listen to the music the more layers I discover. It's actually quite a talented piece of work.
It's Lord of the Rings soundtrack meets heavy metal, as sung by Sarah Brightman... (not really but sounds just like her).

Re: Vinland Saga concept; I don't know how into reading you are but if you find the saga itself interesting, this book, The Greenlanders (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&EAN=9781400095469&itm=29), is a very vivid account of what might have transpired in the doomed colony of Greenland, and also talks a bit about Iceland and Newfoundland. It's an excellent read. :)

@ Sammy: Yes exactly, I meant that she sounds a lot like Sarah Brightman when SB is singing pop songs, not opera. I've been wanting to try After Forever, but I can't find any of their albums in music stores around here. Been meaning to check on eBay...

@Magrette: I'm not an avid reader, but not because I don't like to, I just don't have time. I read a historical fiction a while back called "The Shield Ring." It was about a colony of Scandinavians living in the highlands of Great Britain trying to preserve their territory, identity and culture despite their conflict with the Normans. It was a really good book, but old as the hills and I think it is out of print.

Decipher was hard to find, as a matter of fact, I had to hit ebay to get a copy reasonably priced. This one is very light on the growls, while Prison of Desire has far more. So far, I like Prison of Desire more, but Ive only had this one for two days Mark Jansen, one of the founders of the band, left and formed Epica, his sister Floor still sings for AF.

Epica seems like a slightly heavier version of After Forever, in my opinion, a lot more symphonic and focusing on more classical elements.

There's also "Here Be Dragons" - a book about the lives of Welsh Prince Llewellyn Ap Ioworth (I think that's the spelling), his rival, Prince John of England, and their respective significant others... It was an entertaining read but since it was written by a woman it's heavy on the sex and light on the fighting. (I would prefer the other way around, but that's just me).

And my most profound apologies to everyone.... I will no longer de-rail the topic! Ahem, here... uh.... I'm currently listening to Madina Lake, the album "From them to us through you." http://www.artistdirect.com/nad/window/media/page/video/0,,3819736,00.html?aff=ysv They are a new emo group and the only emo group whose CD I own and listen to with pleasure. Their compositions are way better than most of those screaming silly persons afflicted with bed-head and confused fashion sense. ;)

Hey Sammy, what is AF's newest album? When I'm discovering new bands I usually try to get their latest album first, that way I can see what their current focus is. If I like it, then I go backwards and see 'where they came from.'

Probably sounds silly but that's just me.

I do that sometimes. Good policy with bands that have extensive catalogs and/or have undergone serious lineup changes. No time like the present to drop in on them. Just be careful and read a few trusted review sources first, the latest and greatest tend to be the most expensive as well!

Some bands, if i dont particularly latch on to their newer stuff, I throw on the brakes and get the very first thing they put out. Like Opeth's "Orchid", having some fun with that one right now, it's pretty good actually.

It looks like their newest AF one being pushed is titled simply After Forever (http://www.myspace.com/afterforeveronline). I cant vouch for it purrsonally tho, only heard samples, but what Ive heard actually sounds pretty cool to me. Sounds like theyve got the synths and sopranos going, and I hear some pretty nice non-death distorted vocals goin on too!

All I can say with definite warning beware of the mid-career EP "Exordium", it's pretty bad. The version of Maiden's "evil that men do" is atrocious! No wonder I got it for like 5 bucks!

More stuff from my 'ripped from vinyl collection' ...

Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy - Avant Pop (http://www.amazon.com/Avant-Lester-Bowies-Brass-Fantasy/dp/B0000031TU/ref=sr_1_1/002-3448189-0047267?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1190374145&sr=8-1)

No better way to describe it - pop tunes played by a pioneer of avant-garde jazz leading a post-modern New Orleans-style brass band ... and yet somehow it all works!

"Still life" is as far as I go back with Opeth. That's still 5 albums, and enough for me right now. The way you felt about Exordium is kind of the way I felt about The Gathering: Mandylion. Gathering's album "Home" is one of my all time favorites, so mellow and filled with melody. Mandylion however, imho, showed that they are a much better mellow goth- rock band and need to stay away from heavy.

I'm sorta mixed on Mandylion, but I love "always", it's back when they had a male vocalist. Never heard "home"

Oh there's definitely some good moments on Mandylion, but every song has pretty much the same rythym and a lot of the riffs are carried too far, you know, like they should end the song now..... ok, how about now.... NOW!!

Their singer has a great voice, and nearly every song on "Home" http://sample.music.yahoo.com/radio/clientdata/616/player.asp?cid=616&iid=1&sk=3&ltw=LaunchRadioTarget&p=6&m=0&d=0&modeInitialized=1&mode=1&resized=1&bridgeInit=1&bridgeMode=1&sids=31681437 to me is perfect, the kind of stuff that grows on you. The styles are so completely different from Mandylion to Home, you wouldn't know it was the same band unless you.... well... knew.

Right now listening to Breaking Benjamin: We Are Not Alone. I like their latest album better, but "So Cold" is a great song.

Catching up on the stuff my work buddy has done while I was sans PC. Excellent quality for a one man show in a backyard shed. I got fired as his keyboard sit-in once he realized I had zero creativity. I will take a little credit for reminding him of the joys of reverb. He's a little too much of a rocker to turn into a gazer, but I can nudge a little. ;) Movie/TV soundtrack fodder all around. I particularly like:

Not quite :). It's my favorite song (or songs, as the Beef Construction Song is included) from the 1974 Brian de Palma movie "Phantom of the Paradise", a Rocky-Horror-like musical comedy about an evil record producer and an unlucky composer. A quite silly mixture of Phantom of the Opera, Faust and Dorian Gray which features many in-movie stage shows, in this case the musical 'Faust' written by the ripped-off composer...
'Somebody Super Like You' by the in-film band 'Undead' is more or less an Alice Cooper spoof - other songs are different, ranging from Rock'n'Roll to Beach Sound to... whatever. The music is by Paul Williams who also featured as the evil, unaging producer Swan.
I guess that by now you already know it's one of my favorite musical movies :)...
I recorded the soundtrack on tape while sitting in front of the TV set back in the early 80s, managed to get hold of the soundtrack CD only two weeks ago, and discovered yesterday that all song clips from the movie are available on Youtube.
