Feeling relaxed tonight.. listening to some classical: http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/radio/B0000042HD/ref=pd_krex_listen_dp_img/103-6356121-1137416?ie=UTF8&refTagSuffix=dp_img

"The Lark Ascending" has gotta be one of the most beautiful classical pieces ever written. The sample here doesn't play enough to do it justice, as it gets so intense toward the middle.

"Ghost love score". It sounds like epic score for rpg. Som fan even made a final fantasy video mix about it:

Ah, Jabberwocky... my favorite piece by Vaughn Williams is the 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis' (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000TDI6LS/ref=dm_mu_dp_trk7/002-9386007-9093652).
And did you know that Lloyd-Webber borrowed a tiny bit from Vaughn Williams' 'London Symphony' for his 'Phantom of the Opera'? When I heard the London Symphony for the first time, I was like 'Huh? Phantom?'...

@zakhal: nice video (with many spoilers)... Nightwish and Final Fantasy never fail to entertain me :).

A little Concrete Blonde for me. I've loved this song for a long time. There's a verse in the middle that might offend the religious amongst us. I don't care for the video, but it's the quickest way I found to sample the whole song.

@Bart- that was actually a pretty good recreation of the music videos for all those songs. He does an excellent MC Hammer :)

Just came home from work and found the new Nightwish album "Dark Passion Play" waiting for me! I preordered the collector's edition, which comes with a second CD that has Orchestral versions of all the songs. I'm not actually listening to it right now - I'll put the head phones on and listen to it before I go to sleep so I can hear everything the clearest. Can't wait! If the songs are half as good as the CD packaging this must be an awesome album....

@ Zakhal: Ghost Love Score is my favorite Nightwish song ever, but of course that's before I listen to the brand new album...

@ Jaz: You're right, if that's the whole song I'm thinking of, it does sound a bit like Phantom of the Opera, which is also a very good soundtrack... and play for that matter. Saw it when I lived in New York. My favorite would have to be "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again." That'll send chills up your spine hearing it live!

Spinning Dark Passion Play right now. Wow what an album. Nightwish has truly outdone themselves this time around. The new lead singer is not as vocally powerful, or graceful as Tarja was, but she gives the music a younger more edgy feel which is a nice evolution for the band. Any Nightwish fans better get this one immediately!

Any Nightwish fans better get this one immediately!

I'm skeptical tiger, been listening to samples. Hesitant to pay full price on this new one. You can change a lot of things, but the singer is the most dramatic of all changes! It does sound nicely heavy at times, the male vocals are tearing it up too, like on track #5 they almost sound like Therion or something. This would not be bad. I'll have to think about it some more, maybe I can hear some more full tunes on YouTube or something.

Been spinning Mercyful Fate's "Dont Break the Oath" (http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Break-Oath-Mercyful-Fate/dp/B000000H42/ref=pd_sim_m_1_img/105-8951807-0246845?ie=UTF8&qid=1191560215&sr=8-3) this evening. I like King Diamond's early stuff, hell I like all his stuff really. It's pretty loaded with the satan-schtick in the early days, but it's also pretty scary in a way because of his shrieking. "Desecration of Souls" is unbelievable! My god he sounds possessed at times, and like he has multiple personality disorder or something as well. Either you love him or hate him there's no middle of the road with Kings unique style, Ive known people who cant stand it. It's a strange mix of classic metal and black metal, I cant help but like the old school solos and stuff. This is true metal, there's no denying his influence on metal to come. Ive kinda always liked King's stuff because he often goes into these weird stories and such, and on his solo stuff, full concept albums. Though the lyrics are questionable at times, I tend to give him a pass because the overall package rocks. I have a feeling i'll be doing a lot of King Diamond's stuff in the weeks to come.

Next up - "In the Shadows", a departure from the satan thing, and more into tradition ghost story territory with songs such as the Bell Witch and the Headless Horseman, even tho there is a brief dip back into the old days with "is that you, Melissa?", the sequel to Melissa, the song of his grief and longing after his girl is chose for the sacrifice. Or does she volunteer herself? The return to the speedier take on the main riff in the end of this song is awesome.

I understand... The first track is a 13 minute epic that completely blows you away, with changes in melody about 4 times. In that sense it is reminiscent of Ghost Love Score. The second track Bye Bye Beautiful also rocks the male vocals really well. Unfortunately there are a couple of tracks that Holpainen sings almost exclusively, and that to me has always been a bad thing. He's a great songwriter and backup singer, but not as lead. As I said before, whatshername (can't remember the new girl's name) is no Tarja. Amaranth is the most radio friendly track and is definitely one of the best, but mainly because it fits whatshername's voice really well. You can tell it's a slight deviation from the typical Nightwish fare. Other songs on the album leave you thinking they were written for Tarja and would sound better with her singing them, being too powerful for a less operatic voice.

Listening with a critical ear I would say overall this album is as good as Once, and is definitely not a step backward imho. The songwriting is strong as ever - maybe strongest ever, and in the end just boils down to whether or not you like the new girl.

You were talking about lyrics, and that does bring me to my biggest criticism about Nightwish. I think Holpainen's lyrics are intelligent enough, but he always seems to be creating some sort of story that never really makes sense. Dark Passion Play is no different... right from the beginning "The Poet and the Pendulum," it seems that an epic story is in the making, but again, it's all sort of bizzarre and incoherent. At the end you are left wondering if any songs were linked to the others or what?

I don't know if you are into Progressive metal Sammy, but my favorite concept album will forever be Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime." - Now that's a story! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_mindcrime

"Suite Sister Mary" from that album is an 11 minute work of art.

There are blues you get from women when you see 'em going swimmin' and you haven't got a bathing suit yourself.

There are blues you get much quicker when you're drinking lots of liquor and somebody goes and takes it off the shelf.

There are blues you get when everything's in hock.

When your boyfriend doesn't answer when you knock.

There are blues you get from getting in the taxi cab and fretting every time you hear the bumper jump clock.

There are blues you get from trying to keep your uncle Bill from dying and he afterwards forgets you in his will.

[funeral march]

There are blues you get from kisses when you're walking with your missus and another girl shouts, "Hi, Bill!"

Well the blues'll make you wanna hop, stop, shake, shiver.

The blues'll make you wanna end it right in the river.

Still not sure what to call the genre. I've thought about coining a dte original, "Shoe Wave", but even what that implies really isn't accurate. I can't really call it generic Britpop either, though. Listening to Zombie Ghost Train's "Dealing the Death Card" cd.

This is one of those bad purchases that I know is such, right from the first listen. Granted that the lyrics for this type of band arent Shakespeare, but they can at least be clever. They can be creative, as they are on their "Glad Rags and Body Bags" cd. I'm still trying to figure out what that title means tho.... nevertheless, it's a great cd.

this one isnt.

It's clearly their first effort out the door, and it shows. One or two lines that repeat the entire song, and that line isnt even good. The 50's rock-meets-monster-punk is kinda there, but it sounds like a high school band. They prolly were in high school when they recorded it. It sucks. I'm bummed

I'll offer up a tune that's a bit skitzo but somehow really draws me in. The opening is trip-hop (which I don't generally care for, but dovetails nicely with CU's Morcheeba reference), the chorus is gazer, and the end is borderline electronica.

spawning off of the "sex without procreation" line from the witcher thread/video. it made me think of bjork's - enjoy which has the line "sex without touching". its a good live clip, and i can't recall if i heard her play that one at coachella where her performance was less memorable than i would have liked as we were in the cuts walking from faithless's set and the cameraman was a rockhead so we just layed down and listened. also i often get weirded out when i see bjork from mid-nineties vintange whose face and spastik behaviour are nearly a match for my brother in his prepubescent days.

Didn't work for me, Jabberwocky. I'm not really sure why, either. The girl's got some serious pipes and there's some decent musicianship running around there, but the 2nd thru 4th clips just didn't work for me. The song "Digital Deceit" and a few others have some very cool sound effects (such as a dial-up modem connection) mixed with the music (plus all the choir voices) that you don't hear at all on the live version. Oh well...

Still good to share, Jabberwocky. I know what you mean about the difficulty finding decent clips. I fight that pretty regularly, although I've had decent luck with MySpace. Sometimes the clips one can find don't even sound like the same song.

First 5 songs are excellent imho.. if you like adult contemporary alternative funk jazz folk whatever(?) The rest of the album has some flashes of brilliance, but not as catchy as the first half. "Field Below" is a great lazy day, bluesy homesick sort of song with some great piano.

I know I just mentioned it but I can't stop listening to After Forever Invisible Circles.

Here's samples from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/radio/B0002MHE0U/ref=pd_krex_listen_dp_img/103-1414774-1879034?ie=UTF8&refTagSuffix=dp_img

The samples missed the hook on almost every song, but there's good stuff to be heard on "beautiful emptiness" "Sins of idealism" Through Square Eyes" and "Life's Vortex." "Life's Vortex" demonstrates one of the varying styles found throughout the album - in this case progressive metal.

Why do I bother mentioning this album again? Because it's been a long time since I heard this skill of composition in music writing. The whole album is spilling over with melody, it changes tempo frequently, and incorperates all kinds of subtle sound effects and unique instruments (e.g. pipe organs, doorbell) within some of the songs. The ballad "Eccentric" marks a difining point where the album seems to shift gears and infuse a new sort of energy and urgency into the music.

Almost every song includes orchestral arrangements, and they are very reminiscent of the quirky beautiful gothic compositions of Danny Elfman in Edward Scissorhands. The growling male vocals have the same pitch and style as some of Opeth's work, and that is a very good thing. IMO this album takes the best of Evenescence, Nightwish, and Opeth and wraps it all up into one fantastic package. This is my first After Forever album purchased but I know it won't be the last!

I don't know if there are any other metal fans out there besides Sammy so I'll shut up now. :)

Greetings!

Alas I've learned, a few days ago, that a great Icon of Metal had passed away a short while ago in 2001.

He was the founder of the death metal band known as well, Death, and he was a molder of the movement of Death metal as it is known today.

His name is Chuck Schuldiner.

I will link two Youtube videos in his honour, so that the few Metal heads here can watch in silence...

In Memoram :

1) RIP Chuck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BRbSXvzLNJU).

2) Leprosy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poawdmQBkpc)!

May his soul rest in peace.

RIP to good 'ol Chuck indeed. Tho he very well may be happy to be dead!

Well Jabberwocky, I'm glad you finally turned on to After Forever!
Theyre a great band, Ive got a lot of mileage out of their cds. They have the tendancy to stay fresh with me for a while, I can pick them up anytime and in any mood and be into it all the same. Floor is a wonderful singer, she has some real power and almost a sadness about her at times tho thats very endearing. She's very down to earth, likes to do the simple rock female vocals, then boom she's suddenly classical. She's so damn powerful, the band behind her is so powerful, I love it!

I really like the male vocal style as well, I have to give him credit as well. I like that style of dual-tracked digitized growl, it's so otherworldly. I dont like the gurgling, gross death style vox all that much, Ive always preferred the type that AF uses.

You really need to get "Prison of Desire", that's a very good cd as well. "Decipher" is good, but I really think that the dearth of male vocals on it will always keep it beneath "Prison..". I dont have Invisible Circles, but after listening to the samples 3 times, I'm ordering it tonight!

oh man, classic Bauhaus. Youre missing out on some great gothic rock there, you need to get the studio tracks. Trust me, get this compilation cd (http://www.amazon.com/Bauhaus-Singles-1979-1983-1/dp/B00000189H/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-7673850-2488455?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1193606853&sr=8-1) of their greatest hits, you wont be disappointed after a few listens. Ive been listening to them for 20 years, theyre timeless!

I'm still doing the The Lost Tracks of Danzig (http://www.amazon.com/Lost-Tracks-Danzig-2CD/dp/B000PFU9TW/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/105-7673850-2488455?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1193607233&sr=8-1), both volumes. I personally would have to say the self-titled Alice In Chains rules, affectionately known as "The Grind Album"... followed by Jar of Flies.... and then it gets foggy since all of their albums are totally awesome. Best grunge band of the 90's imho. I have a lot of fond memories of my teenage years during that time period.

I have a friend who grew up with Jerry Cantrell. I enjoyed most of his solo work although I kept thinking to myself that it would be so much more awesome with Lane Staley's voice..... but I guess he was right - "And we die young."

It's like they and After Forever have been dueling, trying to outdo each other since the split, and the result is two bands who push it to the max!

On another note: I can second that statement when it comes to wwpins, he's pretty awesome as a seller, Ive used him several times (including this Invisible Circles purchase) and he hasnt let me down. He's cheap too!

My copies of My Favorite ("The Happiest Days of Our Lives" comp) and Frozen Ghost ("Essentials") came along with my copy of Puzzle Quest. I've been so busy with Puzzle Quest that I haven't given them a fair listen yet. I got thru the Frozen Ghost collection once. I had heard (and have dubs on cassette somewhere) their first two cds and liked those. Too bad the collection has so many tracks from their 3rd and final cd, which isn't nearly as good. We aim to please. There's plenty more where that came from and our cult is always recruiting. Magerette and cm can warn you about the dangers of getting me started...

I doubt that shoegaze has gotten any airtime in the US, outside of the occasional spin on obscure college stations. Well, I take that back. The Verve had "Bittersweet Symphony" in the top 40 a few years back although most properly snooty gazers classified Urban Hymns as Richard Ashcroft's pop sellout cd. Without "120 Minutes" on MTV back in the early 90's, I never would have known the genre existed. Without the Vertigo Live365 station, it would be very difficult to know about what's out there today.

There's a little bit of gazer guitar work WAY back in the back of the bus if you listen closely, and Richard's vocal treatments are pretty much the same as "Storm in Heaven", but that's about as close as "Bittersweet" comes to shoegaze outside of the band's reputation. I like the song, but it's gazer by association at best.

Ether Aura for me. No links from work, but their MySpace page is readily available. Not sure I care for their new direction much, though.

Oops, missed your question, Jabberwocky. There's a little debate on whether the UK media meant the term as description or insult, but I'm pulling for the former. The guitar sounds are generally run thru a dozen effects pedals which the players manipulate constantly using their feet. The result is that, during a concert, the bands would spend the vast majority of the show rooted to one spot, staring at their feet. There's more to it, but that's the quick and dirty version. Of course, we run into real problems occasionally--Highspire's lead usually performs barefoot, which just pooches the whole thing. ;)

The clips both die right before the chorus, but it's better than nothing. I really wish the latter one didn't die. The song continues to build and build to a triumphant cresendo, but you really lose that effect when the clip cuts out half way thru. These are 2 of my 3 favorite LSD tunes (the other is "Will You Fade" from the first link, which is also cruelly cut). Enjoy.

Edit- Finally got to listen to your clip, Sammy. While there's a pretty big disjoint between the classical work and your usual death metal at first blush, the operatic female vocals (without the bluster of true opera) runs strongly thru both. Do you differentiate on the vocals, though? For me, I can give you vocals that are achingly beautiful (Suzanne Perry in the above clips fits the bill, among others), or I can give you vocals that make love to my ears (Harriet Wheeler of the Sundays and Kaitlyn ni Donovan of the High Violets would fit), but I've never heard a voice that truly belongs in both categories. I wonder if you run into a similar situation, although your "divisions" would probably be different.

Here's one of their latest tracks, Traumfrau (http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=6mZ7aEm_Ex8) . About 50% of their stuff is in German, but, hey... :)

"Rich multi-layered" is pretty wide target so let's throw out a few possibilities, some more obscure than others, and see if anything does the trick:
"Beautiful Things" (http://www.myspace.com/andainnnnnnn) by Andain
"Beautiful" (http://www.myspace.com/echoinggreenmusic) by Echoing Green
"Kein Zuruck" (http://www.myspace.com/wunderbarwolfsheim) by Wolfsheim
"Destroy Everything You Touch" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtqGoHouoE0) by Ladytron

And not a shoegaze tune among them... ;)

Been away for a couple days and haven't had a chance to listen to everyone's samples. Just wanted to mention that I have the Ladytron album with that song on it. Took a long while for the album to grow on me, but it did. "Witching Hour" is the best track imo. Never would have compared them to Depeche Mode though.

Incedentally, the best cover of a Depeche Mode song I've ever heard was by Lacuna Coil. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx58hXh4pVA
The video's kind of pointless but it's worth listening to through to the end.

I'd have to say that a true classical singer who has elevated her voice to an almost supernatural level (such as Mary Ann) can of course do both, when not even really knowing what the hell she's saying can still make your heart melt. You still know youre listening to something really special, difficult, something that's amazing. Her voice is the essence of femininity. That's the double whammy of skill and emotion right there, but "classical metal" vocals and true classical soprano are two totally different leagues of course, minor and major respectively.

Still looking for the metal dame that can do both, havent found her yet!

Hmmm, DM covers, eh? There have been a few tribute cds (I know Trancemode Express has done several, although I'm guessing that's not the musical direction you really want to take), but I never really looked into them. Don't know that this cover is all that spectacular, but I found it when I was on my Andain kick a couple years ago.

All girl tribute band to Maiden, seeing them tomorrow night. Theyre pretty cool, really good musicians, but I dont like their vocalist as much as their former one, Jen. This is Doyles (misfits) solo project, only two songs into it, and it sounds like total metal, not the punk I that I was expecting. Sounds like late-era Danzig, without Glenn, which is no surprise since it's on his evilive label and produced by him. He also runs the words together a lot too, (bad) grammatical trademark

finally listened to that first yellow orange red track you posted today. i enjoyed it though i'm not sure if they are a band i could get into. i tend to prefer the darker and "drowning out" or "aquanotic" as i like to call it sound that comes from the more goth sounding ethereal/dreamrock/pop or shoegaze bands/songs. i enjoy the bright and happy stuff to but appreciate it more when it has more insturments that are akin to its sometimes celtic sounding roors. its kind of the reason why i never bought a sundays album until recently which i have yet to listen to and give them a fair shake. a great indie effort though and who knows in time i could get to like them. thanks for the find. have you posted the "fleeting joys" before? i saw them referenced on that page, and i know i've seen them before and may even have a comp with them on it though i can't remember what they sound like...

Middle Earth Ensemble (http://www.frankdrums.com/middleearth.html)
listening to their Debut CD (http://cdbaby.com/cd/middleearthens)

No, they arent Tolkien-heads jamming out all dressed up as Uruk Hai and Dwarves and what not (even tho you know that wouldnt bother me if they were!)

No, their definition of "middle earth" is:
Looking at Earth from Space, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Europe all come together in the Mediterranean, literally meaning the "Middle-Earth".....

I saw them perform at Lestat's coffehouse here in San Diego last night, they were really good. Tho much of the metal I listen to (particularly Therion) has a lot of this type of middle eastern flavor to it, however Ive never really sat down and gave this type of music a serious listen. I was suprised how much liked it, this was a really good band!

Then out came the belly dancers.....

I also strangely enough was getting a lot of RPG vibes in this music. Seriously! I felt like I was in some sort of weird RPG cantina or something. It was dimly lit except for the performers. The ganesh cones were going, the ancient-sounding tune being played (and quite loudly over amps) by sitar, flute, drum, mandolin, etc in full swing. Bejeweled dancer writhing to the beat, glistening with sweat....

Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway of course) I think that I'll be seeing another one of their shows soon, I need to turn some friends on to this one. I frequent a couple of the local coffeehouses they regularly play at, just have never been at the right place and time I guess.

"Close" (http://www.myspace.com/tegannorthwood) by Tegan Northwood

@magerette- looks like she's a horticulture meister, perhaps you'll understand what she's talking about at the end of her bio blurb

@sammy- your taste has gotten nearly as scatalogical as Jazzy's, not that that's a bad thing. Medieval chamber music, bellydancing, and death metal. The funny thing is that you can pluck out some common threads that connect it all on a consistent spectrum.

I've always enjoyed Middle Eastern music Sammy. Have you tried Sarah Brightman's album "Harem"? http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/radio/B00008W2QZ/ref=pd_krex_listen_dp_img/002-0707511-1274444?ie=UTF8&refTagSuffix=dp_img
It's not nearly as authentic as what you were describing (which sounded awesome btw) but there are some nice middle-eastern flavors there.

Perhaps more authentic would be Loreena McKinnits dual disc "Live in Toronto" album. There are some nice live set middle eastern pieces on that. http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/radio/B00000JWMI/ref=pd_krex_listen_dp_img/002-0707511-1274444?ie=UTF8&refTagSuffix=dp_img "Marco Polo" is one I had specifically in mind... I'm a Sarah fan, but Ive been outta the loop for a long time w/ her, I dont have that release. Thx for the referral, just ordered it used!
I have pretty much all her stuff, Time to Say Goodbye is such a great cd, gonna throw it on now since I'm prolly gonna be up all night in a weird candlelit black and white tv w/ no sound going twilight zone (went to bed after work w/ a migraine). Went down and chilled in the jacuzzi for a while w/ some unknown half-corked dames that were hanging out in there topless (i love california!), so I'm pretty mellow and 'time to say goodbye' should hit the spot. Water must have been 120 degrees in there! I'm like feeling valium'd out, yet I cant imagine sleeping.

Never done the Loreena Mkennit thing, I have a friend who really likes her but Ive never given her a shot yet. There's some artists I just am saving for later ina way, she's one of them.

i saw dead can dance for the first and only time at the hollywood bowl a couple of years ago. it was an amazing experience as it was one of the only shows on that tour that they played with a full orchestra. what sucks is though it was never released officially like the other ones because the la symphony wanted far too much money to make the selling of the recorded concert viabale...damn shame.

oh and even though that was far from my first time in la, it was my first time riding on the la subway. what's weird is many people living in la don't even know there is one, and riding on it was like riding on a train in a post apocolyptic movie it was so desolate:)

Samamidon has a very beautiful folk song on his MySpace-page (http://www.myspace.com/samamidon). It is called "Tribulation". And I recommend it deeply.

Then there's the great pop song (http://www.myspace.com/feist) by Feist called "1234". It's quite catchy.

Albumwise I've been listening a lot to Beiruts recent album "The Flying Club Cup". "A Sunday Smile" (http://www.myspace.com/beruit) is perhaps the best song off the album even though the whole album is fantastic.

Yeah, Julie's got a very strong, operatic voice. Not much silk to go with the steel. Can't do linkies from work, but you might take a spin with "Cold Sea" by Autumn's Grey Solace. Pretty sure it's on their Myspace page.

Autumn's Grey Solace linkie (http://www.myspace.com/autumnsgreysolace)
(it should be noted that "Cold Sea" isn't really typical of the band, which is pretty obvious if you try any of other tracks)

Silver Screen (http://www.myspace.com/thegreateststorynevertold) for me today. He's only got one track from the cd up and unfortunately I'd say there are 2 or 3 that should have been picked over "Something to Prove", but I guess ya get what ya get.

Uh.. the first link leads to a Full Metal Alchemist song. Was that the intent? 'cuz it was good nonetheless.Strange. For me, it links to a Naruto fan video that uses Scarling's "Bandaid Covers the Bullet Hole" tune for the soundtrack. That's where it was supposed to go. Is that not what you're getting?

I tried the Full Metal Achemist link (it was in the related videos box). Different cartoon, same Scarling song. Perhaps FMA is the cartoon?

Edit 2: Did you chase "Time and the Maiden" or their self-titled debut? I think cm owns the latter, which is a little less electronic and (IMO) a bit better. Of course, T&tM has "Blinking Tears", which is worth the price of admission all by itself (the Amazon clip for that track is criminally worthless).

Still doing The Smiths

Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now, Shoplifters of the World Unite, Sweet and Tender Hooligan... good times.

I do often have to skip what is, to me, the saddest song ever composed - Asleep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeQpLt_nQ5Y)

It just nukes me every time without exception, I'm suddenly morose and sullen, for hours. Even if I'm in a relationship and not feeling particularly lonely, if I'm content and feeling well, doesnt matter. It's about being tired, so tired of it all, the world, feeling as if youre truly on your own and not able to face it any more

there is another world
there is a better world
there must be....

Man, those three lines, a final lament of desperate hope. I wonder how many people have swallowed a bottle of pills and a fifth of gin to that song.

Oops... yeah, that's what the link lead to... I didn't see any reference to Scarling, and I thought Full Metal Alchemist was a group, but you're right, it's the name of the anime.

I think you'll be quite pleased. Skip right to "Blinking Tears" and just let it wash over you. Beautiful, haunting, yet anthemic. Then you can go back for the whole experience. Do you know if you got the original TatM or the reissue? I think the reissue had a few extra tracks but no remastering, but I'm far from certain.

I ought to buy those cds some day. I've got a handful of MP3s and a rare OOP sampler from back in the days of MP3.com, so I'm not missing too many tracks, but I ought to fill out the collection.

Several good ones, there, gents. Veruca Salt hosted 120 Minutes when "8 Arms to Hold You" came out and said the video for Volcano Girls was a painful experience. I guess the walls they were bouncing off weren't all that terribly soft. I've got that Suede album on cassette somewhere. Although I bought it on the strength of "The Wild Ones" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41dzNBQq96M), it turned out to be a decent album.

Recently I dug through my CD collection and started to listening to 3 that I haven't had out for a while; they're old but pretty good. Spiritualized - Lazer Guided Melodies. It's one of those records that grow on you over time. A little like Pink Floyd. Amazing, layered production. Luna - Penthouse. Again, excellent production values. Simple 4 piece band that would have been huge had grunge never came to be. And The Jesus and Mary Chain's Honey's Dead. Not good from beginning to end, but about 8 songs that are pretty amazing.

*Oh and regarding Lazer Guided Melodies, just in case anybody decides they want this one, make sure to get the CD version with all songs indexed; the newest release has the songs bunched together in 4 'suites' that each contain, I think, 3 songs. So if you want to listen to a particular song, you have to fast forward to get to it. A pain in the neck. Why they did this on later pressings, I have no idea.

Listening to Sky 2 - classical guitarist John Williams (not the film composer) formed a classical-rock fusion unit in the late 70's and produced some cool stuff. Love this one, and have augmented it (on my iPod) with their wonderful reading of Sati's Gymnopedie #1.

I ended up dumping Lazer Guided Melodies. It just never grew on me at all. I'm not sure how much "later" really applies as far as "later pressings"--I got my copy years ago and it was already set up as 4 tracks.

JAMC is sort of a bad situation for me. While I respect their pivotal role in the whole scene, I just don't like their stuff. I've tried, but it just ain't happening. I've got the same problem with Ride.

@dte: Tried to hear "Tears of the World" since you mentioned it was reminiscent of the Cure, but for some reason it wouldn't play.

Speaking of Queensryche, I did listen to Operation Mindcrime II the other day. When I first heard the album I was dissappointed, but trying to top the first Operation Mindcrime is pretty much impossible anyway. After listening a few times the second has really grown on me. Plus once you understand the idea each song is trying to convey, it comes together well. I think Hostage, and The Hands (http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/radio/B000E1ZBHM/ref=pd_krex_listen_dp_img/104-7418120-8419144?ie=UTF8&refTagSuffix=dp_img) are two of the best songs Queensryche have ever written.
