In Extremo - Herr Mannelig (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xmRVDBtIt0&feature=related)
And this is the version you see in Gothic 1: Ingame Version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPzyRH5YARo)
The language seems to be old swedish.
That's just..... weird....
I mean, it's like NPC's from the first Gothic came alive and started jamming with a heavy metal attitude but still stuck with their medieval instruments. I think I saw this video before in a bizzarre dream I had after playing Gothic for 26 hours straight. ;)

From the little I can hear on the samples, the album sounds intriguing.

cat power is supposedly pretty talented and well liked by critics and fans. she actually did a track on faithless's last album. and since jim white spends a lot of time in the uk i thought that he might be involved though the only side project/band i was aware he was in is chainsaw of life. after checking, its not him as the dirty three which that jim white is the drummer for is from australia.

Cleaning out the closet this weekend I was digging through my old records ... and found something I haven't listened to in 20 years, amazed that I had forgotten it for so long ...
Archie Shepp - Four for Trane (http://www.amazon.com/Four-Trane-Archie-Shepp/dp/B000003N9E/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1201190098&sr=8-1)
It is amazing that for someone like Shepp his best stuff would essentially be a tribute album ... but it really isn't. It is actually a re-imagining of some of Trane's classics in an idiom full of free-jazz, post modern swing (ala Mingus), hard bop and more, with Roswell Rudd's sublime arrangements ...

What game was that? It must have been a mmorpg because it looks completely unfamiliar to me. I don't do mmo's. The animations were more than a little weird - I couldn't tell if the male characters were supposed to be fighting or playing hopscotch!

In Extremo's a pretty trippy experience. I remember checking them out in the middle of my most Gothic-intensive gaming days, and this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUQzbE6m84M) of them doing SOM's "This Corrosion" had me reeling. They look just like a bunch of weird Gothic characters, all rockin out to some Sister's tune, it's totally bizarre for someone who's played the game.
In Extremo - Vollmond (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ujl-wr1Yuo&feature=related) would prolly be the song/video that I'd most likely say that I like, I think it's pretty cool in a 80's metal vid sort of way, tho i have no clue what theyre saying....

:rotfl: That's so awesome! A heavy metal dude playing the harp! That's a good song actually..
So let me get this straight - is the lead singer Xardas??
Are the PB guys just huge In Extremo fans and decided to make a game based on the musicians' characters?! - There it is, the grandest secret of all behind the Gothic series has just been solved!!!
As a follow up, I've had a chance to give After Forever's self-titled a few spins all the way through. I have to say it's not as strong as Invisible Circles. There are some spots of brilliance, but something about many of the songs just doesn't flow right at times.

c.u., I missed your quiet little post back there. :) Thanks for the info. I found some stuff of hers on YouTube--she can definitely sing( and play the guitar) and seems a nice unspoiled, non-superstar type of personality, but from the two or three songs I sampled, she seems to like to make one line of a song go the longest distance possible at the slowest speed. I usually like a little tighter band, so since Jin White is not the proper Jim White, I'll probably pass. ;)

Only to avoid misunderstandings:
You can really see this when playing Gothic, in the old camp at certain times - it is not made up by players.
Edit:may be only in the German version?Yes, they had to take it out in the English language versions due to copyright reaons. But there's a trick - if you MARVIN in all the In Extremo guys and the announcer, you can see the In Extremo Old Camp concert in the English language versions, too.

There are some good songs on the best of CD. Sleeping Sun and Deep Silent Complete are my two favorites. Also, you may want to pick up Nightwish's "Once" album - the last EP with Tarja singing. It's a very solid album with a 10 minute epic "Ghost Love Score." - Not available on the best of CD.

...and yes, I believe you can get black fingernail polish in OK year-round, but probabaly worth stocking up around halloween ;) . - We have our fair share of Goths running around, although I'd say "Redneck" and "EMO" are our more common strains....
@ Magerette: Damnation is a must-have. Opeth is so versatile to release something mellow and melodic compared to their usual frenzies. I personally hear Pink Floyd'ish influences on that album, in particular the PF album "The Division Bell."

It's actually a little hard to find, Jabber. AFAIK, it's only available as a single with half a dozen remixes. I don't think they've got any proper cds. Looks like all their songs other than that one have come out on trance collections. You can hear all of them that I know of on the various MySpace pages for the band. When I was working in Fort Worth, they had a radio station that played house and trance type music. Most of it was "meh" for me, but that one really caught my ear due to Mavie's vocals. Looks like Amazon has it in stock (I wasn't that lucky when I was buying).

btw--I'm rereading Wilkie Collins' gothic novel The Woman in White also atm, and the villainous husband who clapped away his first wife in a madhouse owns a dreary family estate called..Blackwater Park. Coincidence???
Jabberwocky
January 31st, 2008, 17:53
Which came first, the book or the album? Iirc Opeth claimed the Blackwater Park reference to a song from a previous band that influenced them. But it's quite possible that other band got the name from the book.
Hey, I followed the link for the "How goth are you?" quiz off of the linkie Jaz posted... my results said "definitely not goth." - So I guess I just like the music, I don't "walk the walk."
So I guess that would put me at #18, although #14 does describe my passion for swords.

Wilkie Collins died in 1889. He wrote the first popular mystery novel The Moonstone, and The Woman in White is considered the first sensational novel, or 'thriller', departing from the Gothic movement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_fiction) in literature only in having everything have a non-supernatural explanation.
So yes, the book came first--and the new Goths are building on a very valid and fascinating historic base, even if the title is a coincidence---end of lesson. ;)

Yes, I Walk Alone is from her solo album. I have to admit though, that neither the "new" Nightwish with the new lead singer, nor Tarja's solo effort managed to grab me. Wait a couple of secs for the music to load. The YouTube stuff was pretty miserable sound wise so I linked to their MySpace page.

Good tune though.

I'm sure this will help Winehouse turn her life around. ;)
I do like the Stones music, btw--it's just quite ironic to hear this stuff from them when Richards is still writing songs about heroin (i.e., "Flip the Switch", etc)
At least they can still write songs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yyiwjMFV5o), though, which in itself is pretty amazing.

The Catchers have added a song to their profile. While the beginning sounds a little like a showtune, at around the 3:00 mark, the song takes flight. The audio compression kills some of the fullness of it which is a real shame, but you can still get the general idea.

Sounded like a Queensryche cover band to me at first. :D
I finally put my finger on that sound in the instrumental section of "Dark Halls"--Speak & Spell / Broken Frame era Depeche Mode. Glad you enjoyed it, Jabber. Not really trance stuff like we were discussing earlier, but fairly good. I'm on the fence on purchasing, too. (edit- purchase made, along with Elika's debut (reprinted!!!) and an EP from the band below)
Another new discovery for y'all today. Got these folks off the shoegaze board I visit. I hear a fair bit of Slowdive and Ride, although they have a pretty wide range of style. Fortunately for me, they took the good parts of Ride, since I'm not really a fan of that band. I think "Waiting for the End" is probably my favorite track of the site, but I'll put up a different one for a little different take on my usual formula.

Well, just got Sarah Brightman's new Symphony album, and I gotta say I am a little disappointed. When she was quoted a while back as saying "it has a Gothic Metal feel to it" she must have only been talking about the album art, because with the exception of the intro track, there's not a single sliver of gothic influence in the music whatsoever.
The album art is incredible though - best I've ever seen I think. Here's a linkie: http://www.sarah-brightman.com/sound_vision.html
...It's bizarre how different the packaging is compared to the music. Oh well.

I have to say that I was totally disappointed w/ Harem, so there's no way I'm buying this one. For me, Eden was the last Brightman cd worth buying, and even that was pushing it, everything else from that point on is now totally mired in some kind of post-pop garbage. Well well well, I'm back... and here is my 'review'. Report. Whatever.
We visited a concert on Saturday/Sunday which featured three bands, two of which I knew I liked... but as usual, the openers stole my heart.
The show as a whole was a mess... a real mess. A beautiful location, great music, but organization was extremely shoddy.
The first band to play were Coppelius (http://www.coppelius-band.de/deutsch/_video.htm) (linking to two videos here). I knew two of their EPs and thus I was sure I wouldn't be disappointed - but these boys rock. Coppelius are a very entertaining and exciting stage act. They play what they call 'Chamber Core' or 'Heavy Wood': Iron Maiden covers and their own comopisitions - with drums, bass, cello and two clarinets, the latter being the lead instruments. I was so excited by their performance - and the stage show on the old video is nothing compared to the wacky stuff they did on Saturday - I bought a Coppelius band shirt (last band shirt I bought was Alice in Chains in... hmmm... '92?). They also continued to play their stage act after the show which lead to a very funny incident with my friend Hashimoto.
Anyway, they left us enthusiastic... and the next act came on stage asking us what she was expected to do here (she had watched the opening performance, too). A good question. Neuland (http://www.annakatharina-neuland.de/) is the solo project of Anna from medieval folk act Schandmaul. While Anna is a talented violinist, she and her support played 'real' chamber music which calmed the audience down instantly. Instead of listening to the music, people started to talk to each other or left for the foyer.
The next act was Letzte Instanz (http://www.myspace.com/letzteinstanz), originally a Nu-Metal-formation. They turned folk rock at some time in their career and do sound a lot like Schandmaul now.
Unfortunately, they were on their '"White Tour", featuring their acoustic album. The album is fantastic, they played for nearly two hours, but as it was another real chamber performance, nothing happened on stage (strings sat on their chairs and the singer stood stock-still), so again, many peole left for the foyer (and I bought another Coppelius shirt). Anna Katharina and Letzte Instanz are good acts, but they had deserved their own show, especially since LI played for over two hours, so when the final act Tanzwut (http://www.tanzwut.com/video) appeared on stage, it was Sunday morning already. Tanzwut are a side project of Corvus Corax (some of you may know CC as they contributed to the Gothic 3 soundtrack... besides, they were the mentors of In Extremo who some of you may remember from Gothic 1), they partied on stage for hours, and their show was very, very entertaing. We had to leave early, though, because we had another date to attend in the morning... sigh.
Had the people who organized this event split the show in two (Coppelius/Tanzwut and Anna/LI), things would have been a lot better.

That must have been some show, Jaz. Thanks for sharing an experience I would otherwise never even have known existed. I agree(after listening to the clips) that whoever combined those acts that way needs to put down the crack pipe.
I really liked all the different sounds--never heard anything quite like any of them. The violinist was extremely impressive--but so was Coppelius. Definitely worth the shirt purchase, I'd say. Maybe even a small tatoo. ;)
When I know a little more German, I may be able to order some of this. :)
As for me, listening to a little Alice--NOT in Chains...

Mrs. dte is the hair band expert. Being a married woman, she (naturally) is more than happy to discuss Bon Jovi's leather pants at length while threatening to scratch out my eyeballs for noting that independent and intelligent young brunette in the Poison video. I think she likes the music, too. ;)

Gosh--not Bon Jovi--they're like, babies--I mean fine for a sweet young thing like mrs dte, but kinda like Hannah Montana for me. :) I do understand her logic, of course. Bon Jovi's leather pants and their contents exist on a seperate plane from the trampy looking little brunette.
I'm so old I just don't know your slang, so I wiki'd hair bands- (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_Bands#First_wave_of_.2780s_glam_metal_.281983-1984.29)- sorry, NOT what I had in mind---only some of the 70's guys that are listed as an influence maybe
The genre took influence heavily from 1970s glam rock and heavy metal bands and some influenced by punk, with large sections taking influence from the likes of AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, New York Dolls, Queen, Sweet, Van Halen, Slade, Mott the Hoople, T.Rex, Judas Priest and others.
Though there are several in there I could drop, like Kiss and several I've never heard of, like New York Dolls(???).
Nah, the bands I like wore old blue jeans that nobody pre-tore or pre-faded for them, tee-shirts with obscure sayings or bizarre african import jackets, and could play forty minute guitar solos and make you like it...you know--like the Floyd. We've had that discussion. ;)

He was actually the only person I ever had genuine enjoyment listening to on the show since he has cool 'beat box' skills. The CD is OK, some catchy stuff mixed in with some beat box stuff ... it will be interesting to see what he does on his own.
I don't think this has sold very well - like everything else from Idol folks recently. Perhaps that is why the show is now stacked with pros, now unknowns, and why the judges now say 'if you haven't tried to make it already you don't belong here'.

I've been casually keeping up with the show, Mike, and I gotta say, I still don't think a lot of them are worth the "These are the best in the show ever" hype. In fact, apart from one or two, I say the guys aren't even worth watching. 'Course I am pretty biased toward the ladies! My music collection is chock full of female artists, solo and groups, whereas I don't listen to male artists unless they front a rock band. Period.

Forgot about Uncle Milty in the Ratt video!
As for Cheap Trick, they were pretty much done by then. Aside from the obvious ones, I liked Surrender (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pD8ymBR2Ufo&feature=related) (played it with a rock band I was in back then)
As for Prince, I don't know what his songs are about half the time, but I always got a clear message from his stuff back then - "I'm 5-foot nuthin', weight about 95 pounds and wear 6" heels, I like hot looking women and they like me quite a bit as well. I write some really cool songs and can play the hell out of this here guitar!"

I was thrilled that I got to see Pat Martino at the Corning Glass Museum (http://www.corningcivicmusic.org/Concert070805.htm) this past weekend ... it certainly made it easier to be away from the family all weekend (I'm living a month in a 'long term' hotel while we move from Mass to NY)
Great show ... awesome band really cranked out some great stuff.

So what's next, the "New Wave Fogey's Foggy Memory Collection"? Or do we go for "Fogey's Surprises: 80's Pop Bands that Didn't Suck"? Perhaps "Fogey's Back When We had Hair"? Maybe "Fogey's Retro Guilty Pleasures: Headphones Only"? This could be fun.

As for good "woe is me" music, it sort of depends on how angry your woe happens to be. For a good "FU" woe, I find Autumn's (http://www.myspace.com/autumn1994) "The Hating Tree" tough to beat. For a more reflective woe, Claire Voyant's debut and anything from the Field Mice (http://www.emusic.com/album/The-Field-Mice-Where-d-You-Learn-To-Kiss-That-Way-MP3-Download/11095141.html) would work pretty well. Hmm.. I'm on completely unfamiliar territory here, but that stuff is pretty cool in some strange way. What the phuck do you call this stuff? I've been meaning to get into some non-metal dark & depressing music but I just don't know where to look and where to start. dte, if you decide to give Spiritualized another chance, definitely go with Lazer Guided Melodies, an amazing album, IMO. Shine A Light and 200 Bars are pretty good songs.
I've never seen them live, I went to a Neil Young concert here in Columbus, and the vendors were selling 'Spiritualized' gear and I saw that and I'm freaking out. I'm like 'What's up with the Spiritualized gear?" The guy said "yeah that's the opening act" and it wasn't on the ticket. I show up late for concerts as a rule, and totally missed seeing them play. I had been listening to them for like 15 years, and put a load in my drawers when I found out they had already played.
To make things even more amusing, I missed them AGAIN when they opened for The Jesus and Mary Chain. This was the Lazer Guided Melodies tour, and we had a group set to meet up to see the Mary Chain concert, and I walked in and my sister was "Oh you just missed the best opening band I've ever seen. Spiritualized. Now 20 years later I can't believe I missed it. Oh well.
I can definitely understand somebody not getting into Spiritualized, but Lazer Guided Melodies is pretty good, if that's your style.
Oh well just rambling.

@Zakhary- that's pretty much goth music. The only real difference is that Autumn is guitar-based with liberal use of effects pedals (ala shoegaze) while the majority of goth bands are keyboard based. My adventures in Goth-land are mostly limited to the "ethereal goth" neighborhood (such as "Cold Sea" fromAutumn's Grey Solace (http://www.myspace.com/autumnsgreysolace)), which probably isn't what you're looking for. Sammy and Jaz are more knowledgeable about the harder end of goth. A few others here might be able to chime in, too, but it sounds like Sammy might be living the in the musical neighborhood you're looking for.
@Sir Markus- "LZG" was the cd I had. I might still have it laying around somewhere, but I just couldn't make it work for me. Not sure why. By any chance did you ever get to see The Emerald Down? They were based in Columbus maybe 5 years ago. Beautiful stuff. I heard a rumor somewhere that they might be reforming.

dte thanks for the heads up on Emerald Down. I'm usually pretty 'up' on the local music scene, but that's one I missed. I don't go see live bands as much as I used to, but a quick Amazon search tells me it's probably something I'd like. I'll definitely give them a listen. I know a guy at a local record shop at Ohio State and haven't seen him in ages and have been meaning to pay a visit; I'll drop in and ask him about that band.
Oh and another good 'breakup' record I just thought of is Mazzy Star 'So Tonight That I Might See' depressing as heck, but pretty good. That along with Mazzy Star's follow-up 'Among My Swan' and you should have more than enough 'woe is me' music. 'Happy', 'Fade Into You' and if you're REALLY down, put 'Cry, Cry' on repeat and wallow away. 'Halah' from their first record fits the bill as well. Really pretty songs, though.

I haven't been to a concert in a few years, and I haven't been to one I picked since I got married (almost 16 years ago). Nothing but a steady diet of Bon Jovi, with a shot of Winger and Warrant mixed in long ago, all courtesy of Mrs dte. :(
Emerald Down broke up a few years ago. *digging out Aquarium ep* Make that 2002, give or take a few months. I got a 4th hand rumor on the shoegaze board a while back that the band might be getting back together, but haven't heard anything since. There's no guarantee they'll keep the same band name, for that matter. If you happen to dig up some info thru your local contacts, please share.
I found out that Howard Jones is playing a show in Kokomo (how in the heck does Kokomo land that?) on July 4th, so I might look into figuring out a way to weasel that into the schedule.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. None of the samples really seemed hit the nerve though. The reason I like The Counting Crows latest is because half of the album (the Saturday Night part) is rock, testosterone filled night-on-the-town music, which caters well to my feelings of anger over the situation. The second half of the album (Sunday Mornings) is mellow and contemplative, which works well for the sad mood swings. .... Ah women.... They just confound me.
Anyways... Zakhary, it sounds like it might be hard for you to find a group that caters to what your looking for consistently - Something that's in-between Metal and what dte listed. Usually metal bands have a few softer songs scatter within albums but I can't think of any album that's consistently in that spot between too soft and too hard.

Doom metal is where to head if you want some dark and heavy, sorrowful tunes. Not "stoner doom", because while they do tend to get a little down sometimes, theyre overall just too stoned to care! I personally cant stand stoner doom, outside of Pentagram's "Be Forewarned" because it's mostly occult-themed.
No, little chilluns, we dont want to hang w/ the stoners. That would be far too easy. We wish to wallow, and wallow we shall.
Dealing w/ women, you'll probably want to steer towards My Dying Bride, as they are pioneers of sort of the "romantic" doom, ultra-dramatic, dual mournful guitars, lots of keyboards and some violins and other such classical trappings, wrapped up in some awesome atmospheric sonic setpieces. Did that make sense?
The guy's clean voice might put you off at first, but he goes from moaningly sad to raging growls, to a whisper. He's got the tortured mentality thing down. They tend to plod along at least one time a song for a good run, but not confined to the entire song creeping pace characteristic of most doom.
If that sounds good, order "The Dreadful Hours", then once youre ready for something a little more advanced I'd go w/ "Turn Loose the Swans". Silly titles aside, theyre some of the best doom mainstays I know of.
Turn Loose the Swans (http://www.amazon.com/Turn-Loose-Swans-Dying-Bride/dp/B0000AINGK/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-4603522-9715116?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1208828605&sr=8-1)
The Dreadful Hours (http://www.amazon.com/Dreadful-Hours-My-Dying-Bride/dp/B0001P1EQI/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/104-4603522-9715116?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1208828605&sr=8-3)
For some great (actually the best) gothic doom metal w/ male & female vocals, you need to get into Draconian, namely their first one "Where Lovers Mourn". Dont let the speed in some tunes fool you, they downshift quickly and go all depressed on ya in a heartbeat. This baby will make you reach for the razor, dont read the lyrics if youre blue.
Draconian - Where Lovers Mourn (http://www.amazon.com/Where-Lovers-Mourn-Draconian/dp/B0000DH294/ref=sr_1_1/104-7428270-4155924?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1208829065&sr=1-1)
Other good beauty/beast gothic doom, some would say pioneers of this type of stuff is Tristania, tho theirs is more the longing for lost loved ones beyond death's door done a' la dark poetic verse. Dont bother unless youre ready for lots of thees, thys, and thous proceeding hither from thine speakers.
Tristania's "Widow's Weeds" (http://www.amazon.com/Widows-Weeds-Tristania/dp/B00004YNBK/ref=sr_1_2/102-9179647-5971305?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1208829370&sr=1-2)
& Theater of Tragedy
Theater of Tragedy "Velvet Darkness they Fear" (http://www.amazon.com/Velvet-Darkness-They-Theatre-Tragedy/dp/B000005HNW/ref=sr_1_3/102-3965970-8172123?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1208830208&sr=1-3)
If you want the most crushing type of doom, the stuff that really sort of creeps you out and makes you think you may get bad luck or something by listening to it, then you want to hit the funeral doom crowd. Their stuff is generally dealing w/ misanthropy and self-loathing, and no belief in anything but some black void awaiting us all at the end of our days, forever more. There is no hope, period.
Shape of Despair (http://www.myspace.com/shapeofdespair)
Evoken's "quietus" (http://www.amazon.com/Quietus-Evoken/dp/B000055XW0/ref=sr_1_1/105-7918243-7187604?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1208830085&sr=1-1)
You can actually leave Shape of Despair's Myspace page going and it'll pretty much cycle thru a lot of their "greatest hits". I didnt really quote the other band's pages, because they tend to put up a little more of their faster or newer stuff to attract the less-depressed. Get the ones I spoke of, I know what I'm talking about here.

Good suggestions tho!
I actually prefer Sirenia over Tristania, Veland's new band. Yeah it's more modern but I feel it has stronger songwriting.
Also I prefer "Aegis" over "Velvet Darkness they fear" which is still nice tho.
You know the bands "While heaven wept" and "Novembre", right?
"Virgin Black" might work too, I'm a bit undecided on that one myself.
"Forest of Shadows" is nice very atmospheric stuff. "Mourning Beloveth" is good - if a bit extreme at times.

"White Metal", as I understand it, refers to just about any sub-genre of metal with lyrics about jesus. So I don't believe there is a way that it "sounds".
IIRC a record compay invented the term "white metal" to refer to these bands.
It can sound basically like death metal, power metal, thrash, industrial etc etc... or nowadays even like the crap they call "metalcore". ;)

Thanks for the suggestions Sammy. I liked the My Dying Bride samples, but I'm afraid they are too dark for my own good atm. I'm an idealist and so take things like this pretty hard. I think the doom metal path my be too destructive. I also steer clear of occult themed albums, that stuff just creeps me out.
I've actually been listening to Tori Amos' first album "Little Earthquakes". There's one song on there "Precious Things" that really fits my mood even though it's sung by a female. "These precious things --- let them bleed, let them wash away..."

Doom is rough, probably the most psychologically-destructive type of stuff there is. I mean, there's always been blues music to wallow in the hard times, but it doesnt tend to delve into the black void awaiting us all, consuming all life. Talk about the ultimate bummer, you know.
I dont know why I'm drawn to it, scares the shit out of me sometimes, but I find myself going back to it time and time again.

Currently its mostly progressive metal (Dream Theater, Symphony X, Fates Warning,...), with a healthy dose of 60-70's psychedelia and eurorock: Early Pink Floyd, Steve Hillage, Can, Holger Czukay. Actually also some Porcupine Tree, although they are a bit younger.

And changing rythm/time signatures is very typical for the genre.
Another very good example on that (although they some time are placed in a genre of their own) is Tool. I consider them progressive metal.

Although the band started out as metal they evolved into what I think maybe you're looking for... listen to the samples and see what you think. Imho "Home" is the better album, but "Souvenirs" has a little more Goth feel to it.

Ah, the beauty of different taste. Of course, enjoying prog metal doesn't require us to like all bands in the genre.
Just like you don't have to like both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. (I can't stand neither of them) (correct english?). Hmmm possibly a bad example. I guess I'll just delete it.

I don't like Tool's marketing policy. They were Saturday's headliners at last year's M'era Luna festival. I ignored them and drank beer instead :p.
What is it with Tools marketing policy?

* Even if you had a Festival photo pass, you needed an extra Tool photo pass (for extra money) to take pics of Tool (none of the other bands including the Sunday headliners did that).
* There were special places/seats for disabled people right to the sides of the stage. Guess which band asked their roadies to empty these seats even though the additional space wasn't used?
* Tool didn't appear on the official festival shirt and CD because they wanted to sell their own shirts and CDs.
Yeah I know that many biggos do this, but it seriously put me off.
Now, as much as I like prog rock and Tool's music, I was seriously pleased that overall reception wasn't as warm as they could have wished for. Next time the festival booking agency should think twice about booking an act outside of the usual range of musical styles for their festival.
My favorite prog rockers are Dream Theater.

Well, I found the perfect breakup album... Bon Jovi - These Days. Funny, I've owned it for years, but sort of forgot about it. I can't get much more perfectly fitting song lyrics than what is found in "This Ain't A Love Song" and "My Guitar Lies Bleeding in My Arms."

Ah, Jabber, Mrs dte would be so proud.
@Jaz- I can see the two red heads as men, but I think I'd need additional data to believe the blue one. I even tried a few other vids, but none of them seem to do much in the way of closeups.
Slightly off kilter for me today. Blame 120 Minutes for getting me into this cd. I tried the other three JJ cds and I wasn't overly impressed, but this one still gets the occasional spin a decade later.

The 'blue girl' is Mana-sama; the man presumedly started the Gothic Lolita craze in Japan, and he has his own GL fashion label. He'd make a pretty girl for sure...
Try some of the newer videos, preferrably of Moi Dix Mois (Malice Mizer split back in 2001)... like this interview, for example. Mana is the guy in the middle, the one who doesn't speak (he never does, thoug he sang in a few select titles, and his voice is horrible):

Currently its mostly progressive metal (Dream Theater, Symphony X, Fates Warning,...), with a healthy dose of 60-70's psychedelia and eurorock: Early Pink Floyd, Steve Hillage, Can, Holger Czukay. Actually also some Porcupine Tree, although they are a bit younger.
And Kate Bush.
Personally, I've grown to love her last double-album, "Aerial". I just love how rather" silent" and "quiet" it is ... It's difficult to describe ... It's a bit like "smooth music" to me. ;)
Except the ending of the last song of course, which always leaves me quite disturbed.
Generally, I prefer progressive rock / art rock.
The last days I'bve been digging out and listening Tony Banks' (of Genesis) last album several times again: "Seven". It's fully made with an orchestra, ans "easy listening". Imho.
My most favourite music genre is still the so-called "classic rock", though, rock music with (an) orchestra.
Of which imho the album "We know what we like" is the best example - the London Symphony Orchestra plays works of Genesis. ;)

I've got something for you, though it's not exactly funeral doom.
It's one of the most beautiful and sad compositions ever created.
Besides, there's usually not enough of Arvo Part in this kind of threads:)
It's from Tabula Rasa record which I completely recommend because it's Arvo Part at his best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wb6W7xIFeyA
You may also like Symphony No.3 by Henryk Gorecki.
Here's the second movement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miLV0o4AhE4
Of course, there is also famous Adagio for Strings by Samuel Barber, but you probably heard it already. Anyway, here's one version with an interesting video footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bM16-X6XZjg
Wishing you a sorrowful listen! :)

Yeah, the stuff I listed goes into emotional depths most of the other artists can only dream of (or maybe not even that). I enjoy those compositions for their sheer intensity and the fact that it communicate such strong emotions with me, as a listener, makes me feel more alive in the end:).
Anyway, I'm also a big fan of some Dead Can Dance's records, namely Within the Realm of a Dying Sun and Into the Labyrinth.
So, Jabberwocky, maybe this song from the latter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxWzrRy3xVg might help Big Bird to fly high again, though it'd be on the wings of nostalgia.
The former album might be also right up your (or Zakhary's) alley, I think it inspired many doomy tuned bands.
Take this song, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zbkhe8-cvYI

My mom just sent me a CD for my birthday - it was just re-released, and amazingly enough it was something I hadn't picked up on vinyl or a previous CD reissue.
Ornette Coleman - Live at Town Hall 1962 (http://www.amazon.com/Town-Hall-Concert-Ornette-Coleman/dp/B0015LMOJI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1209390065&sr=1-1)
This came from his ~4-5 year 'retirement' from music, and is his only release of the time period. 4 songs - three are in a nice open trio format, and the fourth (actually the third song on the CD) is an experimental string quartet composition.
The composition (and Coleman's playing on the trio music, if you listen closely enough) are all early expressions of a musical theory Coleman was working on called 'Harmolodicism', where harmony, melody, rhythm, and tempo are all given equal weight. This means that the composer and improvisers are freed from the need for a tonal or rhythmic center.

My first experience with DCD was probably my favorite:
"American Dreaming" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEaJcJqt2Q0)
Lisa's tracks were always a little too weird for me to really enjoy, but Brenden had a fairly good sense of melody. I bought "Into the Labyrinth" thinking I was getting the above track (mail order cassette, I do know how to read a track listing, ya jackals). Enjoyed a few tracks that were pleasant surprises, but never really dug any deeper.

Listening to Tarja: My Winter Storm.
Picked it up cheap on ebay. Figured there's gotta be some decent stuff on there. There is, although it's hard to decide- Should Nightwish have kept her and made one really awesome album, or are we better off that they parted and so now got two mediocre albums?

I've given only 1 track a listen so far, Jaz, but it didn't seem that weird to me. Probably wouldn't buy it, but wouldn't change the channel if it came on the radio.
This group is decidedly hit-n-miss for me, but one of their new tracks is kind of interesting. Huge spaghetti western vibe there.
