What are you using to compose with?

Well, I compose most of my songs on guitar and than make the arrangements in Reason 2.5, mostly with samplers and various refills.

And sorry for the high profanity ratio, I shouldn't be posting on board right after the full night drinking contest, even less so while in the melancholy phase:).

As for what I'm currently listening to, Ennio Morricone it is:
Chi Mai - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbdPUiih020

hey dte quit that funny business. have you been peering into my head or something. i too had never heard of Chandeen 'til a few weeks ago and i don't remember exaclty how i 'heard' them but i bought their cd "a taste like ginger" with a handful of others for very cheap off half.com. some of the songs were a little 'popish' but there are for sure some excellent tracks on their easily worth the like 4 bucks i paid for it.

Projekt sent me an email a week ago advertising the new release from Autumn's Grey Solace. On that email, they also pitched Melodyguild (Suzanne Perry of Love Spirals Downward fame--also pretty good) and the latest from Chandeen. I finally got around to listening to the Chandeen samples and was very pleasantly surprised.

Ok, time for some progressive rock:). Porcupine Tree should do.

The Sound Of Muzak - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ARJRCcfY_A
A hit song in 5/4.

Piano Lessons - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CvxoeasJ2E&feature=related
Pretty good clip, in vein with band's cynicism.

Arriving Somewhere But Not Here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0FLruYo3Ls
Sadly, only song's first part was posted, but since it's my favourite by PT, I'm including it anyway.

Led Zeppelin/Black Sabbath mashup:

Mr. Bungle - Carry Stress In The Jaw:

Their second album, Disco Volante, was such an entertaining masterpiece!

Shpongle - Botanical Dimensions
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzRJrzV5CIY
From their third, last and the best album. It has a great (psy) flow.

Strapping Young Lad - Shitstorm
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFPg0zJZtBE
As one of the commentators on Tube put it, pure concentrated insanity. Love!

My Dying Bride - For My Fallen Angel

To stay a bit in "Line". Great ending to an album.

still totally into A Line of Deathless Kings, it's great

might be the best MDB cd ever IMHO, and strangely enough - no death metal vox. It doesnt lack power tho, very powrful cd. It's strange how I can always look to this band for a solid release, here's their newest cd, by all rights it should suck. They should have betrayed me by now. Nope, all their stuff is solid doom, love it.

What Sammy, no soundclip? By no death vox do you mean none of that exorcist-voice thing the male vocalists like to do--that would be most cool, as it usually makes me have to cringe out--though I think a few people do it well.

I moved this over here from the P&R forum as it's actually a silly song more than anything else:

"Imma do the things that i wanna do
I ain't got a thing to prove to you
I'll eat my candy with the pork and beans
Excuse my manners if i make a scene
I ain't gonna wear the clothes that you like

@Asbjoern- I assume you've heard Velocity Girl? If not, you should. You might want to see if you can find anything from the Popguns (won't be easy, but you might have better luck since their record label is on your side of the pond).

For me--
I finally got off my duff and spun the new Daysleepers cd. WOW!

And I will be attending the Roskilde Festival this summer. My Bloody Valentine and the Danish band Rumskib, that you were hearing some time ago dte, will be playing there. I am looking forward to hear them play.
Other prominent bands at Roskilde are: Radiohead, Mogwai, Bonnie "Prince" Billy etc. etc.

@Asbjoern- Popguns might actually be a little too traditional pop for you, but I'd definitely give Velocity Girl a swing. You might like their older stuff better (much more "garage" feel to it), although I prefer their later stuff which is more indiepop oriented.
Newer: "Sorry Again" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaMrivLS8bU)
Older:"Audrey's Eyes" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoLxXa6W1ug) (actually the closest to a pop song on the Copacetic cd)

@Mike- as you know, I know next-to-nothing about jazz, so that cd might not be up your alley. I thought I recognized one of the artists (besides Herbie Hancock) as one that you liked, but I could be wrong.

For me-
"Dizzy" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhlwhorM1uA) by Throwing Muses
(best I could do was a live clip, but it's fairly true to the cd)

Asbjoern

Velocity Girl is indeed very garage-like. Though I'm also more into an indie/lo-fi sound, so I don't think they are to my taste. "Crushed (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=100129187)" by The Popguns is a good song.

I've been listening some more to The Radio Dept. and here's a shoegazer.

The Radio Dept. - Every Time (http://www.last.fm/music/The+Radio+Dept./_/Every+Time)

I watched the film "Limbo (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0164085/)" yesterday (and I can only recommend it. It had an atypical narrative, which kept you interested even during otherwise, normally boring scenes). The song "Lift Me Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czaAguwm9rA)" by The Boss was played during the credits. A perfect choice.

Adding some songs to harden the thread a bit .

Killing Joke - Hosannas From the Basements Of Hell:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ak5TxzBzfDw
The clip is ultimate camp but the song is FIRE!

Bruce Dickinson - Chemical Wedding
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ8286CdIn4
I really like two of his solo albums - Balls to Picasso and The Chemical Wedding.
This is the title song from the latter.

Devin Townsend - Christeen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcfDxq8Zw5A&feature=related
Just a great rock song from his fabulous Infinity album.

Opeth - The Drapery Falls
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvLn8j4c5l4
One of their best songs. It's from the Blackwater Park album.
It's multifaceted, heavy and soft, as most of their compositions.
The "heavy to soft" transition at 7:48 is completely genius.

Elton John vs Europe - Counting Rockets
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgs73jG5TJ4
Well, this is the cheese song of this post. It's a really inspired mashup made by Divide & Kreate project - http://www.divideandkreate.com/
I think those two songs work great together.

I'm adding two bonuses to sorta tie the post together:
Killing Joke - Eighties

The Damned - Life Goes On

Yeah, me too, it's one of my favourite mashups, Stayin' Alive in The Wall by Wax Audio being another one: http://www.waxaudio.com.au/downloads/mashopolos
Especially the blending in the chorus is just hilarious.

Currently I'm listening to Ween, Pennsylvanian, more or less, spoof band which made some great tunes during 90's.
My favourite record by them is The Mollusk from 1997. It's both funny and pleasant listen well suited for hot summer days.

Some tracks from said album:

The Mollusk - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5K_w9Tbhoc

Mutilated Lips - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0s8fBQJEuvM

I'll Be Your Johnny On the Spot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxC3Faa6BaM

Waving My Dick in the Wind - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSD-Tk0Z3zI

And as a bonus, here's Buenas Tardes Amigo form their Chocolate & Cheese album (1994).

Deep-O--I love Ween! My son turned me on to them and they absolutely rule. The Mollusk is also my favorite, though Piss Up A Rope is a close second. Thanks for the clips, especially the classic Buenos Tardes with the spaghetti western bridge.
...maybe I'd sell you a chicken/with poison interlaced with the meat...

That Opeth cut was also excellent--Blackwater Park is on my list if I ever get a job and have money again. :)

Last thing I listened to was this old Billy Idol cut (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToeY7MkCm0c) myself--this is the 1984 MTV version. It pretty much epitomizes everything that went wrong with the '80's, but I have a weakness for the sneers and the wristspikes.

I have all Dickinson's solo works, those two I've mentioned just happen to be my favourite. And I agree that Accident of Birth is very good.

That Opeth cut was also excellent--Blackwater Park is on my list if I ever get a job and have money again. :)

Besides Blackwater Park I'd also recommend Still Life from 1999. It's probably their most compact one, great from start to finish, perfectly balanced and it has probably the best sounding acoustic guitars of all their records.

Here's the first song from Still Life, The Moor:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XijodYFQbrY
Some of the texts (not the lyrics) in video are pretty silly, but the song is great.
The transition starting as 5:32 is one of my all time favourite moments in heavy music.

Here's the mellow song from the same album, Benighted:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjtZW_FCSTo
I love the atmosphere of this one!

Oh, and while I'm at their softer side, I'm adding what I consider to be the best three songs from their fully mellow output, Damnation:

Windowpane - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IzLDT73bkk
The guitar solo section in the second half is just beautiful, well, eh, everything in this song is.

In My Time Of Need - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9x6YclsLHN0
A bit of pinkfloydian mood here.

To Rid The Disease - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBgoiLiNuXg
Chorus of this one gives me some serious chills.

Well, I'm ending the post with something from the more typical Opeth's repertoire. It's another song from Blackwater Park, Bleak:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BdZ1xFysF8
A lot of great moments in this one.

Along with Devin Townsend, Mikael Akerfeldt (the mind behind Opeth) is my favourite contemporary rock artist. He has great compositional skills, is a very good guitarist, his growls are state-of-art ones (I usually don't like such vocals) and his clean vocals are one of the best in genre. Although he's sometimes slightly under tune, the emotion more than makes up for it.

Well, that's all for my Opeth post :).

That's off their first ep (Hide Your Eyes), which is WAAAY out of print (Jeff auctioned off his last 10 personal copies a year or so ago). I got into the Daysleepers too late for that one, although I did pick up the second ep (The Soft Attack) which I think is also impossible to get now. Elika put up a video for their song "The Whip" which I think is really good. Simple, but effective. Song's pretty good, to boot. The vid is on the page linked below. During my "visit", I noticed that they've redone one of my favorite songs of theirs. They've nudged it toward a little more abrasive presentation, which will probably make it a little more interesting around here. Although I liked the prettier original version, the vocal work they added at the end is very catchy.

The newest, "Teenage Poetry".

Listening to clips doesn't really do it justice, though. There's about 20 "themes" somewhat arbitrarily broken into 11 tracks. The whole is definitely better than the parts. It's a stellar release for "lights out, eyes closed, extend the Lazyboy", but it might be a bit on the poppy side for you since you seem to prefer your tunes to have a little complexity and rough edge to them. This cd is a bit minimalist and smooth as silk.

I keep going back to Words by Kate Miller-Heidke (I also love Career Advice and her version of Psychokiller), Garbage and (I am ashamed to admit) listening to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer soundtrack and Radio Sunnydale (I know it is very sad, but there are some great songs on the CD's) and of course, still the Chili Peppers, Dresden Dolls, Green Day and Living End. My musical tastes wander, but I usually come back to the same music... and every now and then add a new song or a new artist.

These days I'm mostly listening to very early Pink Floyd (pre UmmaGumma). Titles like "See Emily Play", "Let there be more light", "Interstellar Overdrive" and Embryo.

Free-floating psychedelia. Yay!

I've also recently discovered The Mars Volta. They're completely nuts! But I lik'em.

Today it´s Bloody Kisses for me , easily the best album by Type O Negative.

Everything fell so greatly together on this record.
Great mix of melodies, atmospheres, dark romanticism, anarchy, sense of humor and idiosyncratic production and song structures made this record excellent from start to finish.

- Herbie Hancock Box Set - nice 4 CD set on sale for 99 cents

Wow ... didn't realize the value I was getting ...
Herbie Hancock Box (http://www.amazon.com/Herbie-Hancock-Box/dp/B0002VEY7M/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1215477500&sr=8-1) - 4 wonderful CD's of 70's and 80's stuff.

Steve Reich Works 1965 - 1995 (http://www.amazon.com/Steve-Reich-1965-1995/dp/B000005J4P/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1215477565&sr=8-1) - now this is really just amazing ... ***10 CD's *** of the minimalist master at work ... just mind-boggling stuff.

On the other hand ... I also got John Mclaughlin's new Floating Point (http://www.amazon.com/Floating-Point-John-McLaughlin/dp/B00158K146/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1215477653&sr=8-1). Not terrible, but it could have been called 'what's the point' ... and I am once again reminded that the last time I really *loved* something of his was in 1984 (http://www.amazon.com/Mahavishnu-Orchestra/dp/B000068TLK/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1215477807&sr=8-5) with the Mahavishnu group with Jonas Hellborg. (the 1986 Adventures in Radioland (http://www.amazon.com/Adventures-Radioland-McLaughlin-Mahavishnu-Orchestra/dp/B0000046QF/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1215477949&sr=8-2) was OK, but certainly not up to the promise of stuff he was doing live at the time when I saw them)

Completely agree.
Some idividual moments are great but the more diverse songs are composed in somewhat random manner and transitions between various parts are too forced/underdeveloped. And softer songs lack the inspiration or, uhm, magic of some older ones. The ordering of songs doesn´t help. Hopefully, next one will be better.

Yeah, there was a big stink about Ashcroft sampling/stealing the Oldham interpretation. I don't know what came of all the legal gyrations. Ashcroft is a prick (even though he makes some good music), so it's entirely possible he tried to sneak one thru. Still doesn't change the fact that it's a great version of the song.

Listening to Judas Priest's new concept album, "Nostradamus"...

I really like the music, but I think they could have come up with much better subject matter for their first concept album. Tackling a heavy issue, or part of history would have been much more powerful for me. The whole Nostradamus thing is kinda silly to me (and I'm not saying that Nostradamus was good/bad, right/wrong... it just doesn't interest me when the man has been discussed to death in other mediums (pun kinda intended)).

That personal issue aside... it's a great album!

That was good stuff, Arhu. Throw some ethereal vocals on that, and you've really got something. When I was in Texas, there was a trance/house radio station that I spent a lot of time with. Found a complete version of an LSD classic. At the band website, of all places . Most of you will probably find the beginning to be a snoozer. Just to add in on the Ulrich Schnauss debate. "In a Strangely Isolated Place" by Ulrich Schnauss very quickly becomes annoying. That was my experience with the album at least. The melody compositions were too simple.
Since then I've stayed away from him. If you like chilled/ambient music I would rather recommend Stars of the Lid. "Even if You're Never Awake (Deuxieme) (http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=Stars+of+the+Lid&hl=en&emb=0#q=Stars%20of%20the%20Lid%20Even%20if%20you%2 7re&hl=en&emb=0)" is one of their greater songs from their album "Stars of the Lid and their Refinement of the Decline".

And personally I prefer Board's of Canada's latest album "The Campfire Headphase". Mostly because of the general acoustic or natural sound it has. But well, BoC's albums can't really be divided into grades of quality. They are all good. Though I have yet to experience Geogaddi.

Currently I'm going through Ennio Morriocone's repertoire for the films of Sergio Leone. What a soundtrack composer.

Also, Lustmord.
And yeah, Schnauss is compositionally pretty average pop but I really like to be washed by those soundwaves from time to time.

Ennio Morricone´s work with Leone is the pinnacle of film soundtracking. Even Hitchock/Herrmann weren´t that congenial.
I still can´t believe that Morricone and Leone were attending the same elementary school.

Another golden oldie...
Here, Ronnie Montrose revamps, slows down and transforms a somewhat trash rock number, originally written by Rolling Stones Keith Richards and Mick Jagger (in respect of Kieth's drug taking notoriety days) into a rock track of tonal simplicity. The cue for the drum start is perfect.

Flutwacht -> Flut = flood, Wacht = watch (the Watch which watches over things).

In this context it probably means a bunch of people watching the flood in case it might spring over the embankments near the sea, especially if the land behind them is situated lower than the sea.

Volbeat - Soulweeper #2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn60umij8bw)

nice review (http://www.metal-observer.com/articles.php?lid=1&sid=1&id=12331)

Metal-Observer:
This is along way from home considering my own musical tastes but in VOLBEAT we find some good ol’ Hard Rock more than a little influenced by Country and Elvis Presley, then mashed up with METALLICA tinged Metal riffing and Hardcore breakdowns like in “Boa”.

“Rock The Rebel/Metal The Devil” is VOLBEAT’s sophomore release and is held with great esteem in their homeland Denmark, a nation comparatively Rock and Metal starved considering its neighbors. Fronted by the king of Danish rock Michael Poulsen, VOLBEAT go out of their way to turn the usual sensibilities of Rock on its head by borrowing from a slew of musical references. From the aforementioned country guitar slides in “Sad Man’s Tongue” and continually pervasive Presley style vocals prevalent in tracks like “Devil Or The Blue Cat’s Song,” “Sad Man’s Tongue” and “Radio Girl,” to Celtic edged punk ala DROPKICK MURPHYS with more metallic guitars in “The Garden’s Tale” and sixties pop-rock vocals, rhythms, guitars and structures in “Radio Girl” which then descend into chunky metal riffing.

The whole album feels a tad like a well constructed vehicle for the insanely dynamic vocal delivery of Poulsen who primarily utilizes an approach somewhere between Thrash and upbeat Doom whilst also throwing in a sense of self which soars through the plentiful choruses and Presley, come country, influenced tracks.

The guitars are well produced and fuse a sound familiar to old school Thrash fans and chugging more familiar to 90’s Modern Metal, whilst maintaining an understated element in the more musically diverse sections. Whilst the riffing is no great shakes from bands heard a million times before, there is something individualistic about the enthusiasm behind them, a case in point being the bridging riff in “Soulweeper #2” and their staple ability to shred independently yet powerfully behind the vocals.

The rhythm section do a competent job keeping up with the maelstrom of styles whilst instilling the driving metal sections with chunks, rolls and jumps. The overall sound is particularly gilded with a fantastic production which keeps all the elements where they should be even in the more off-the-wall moments.

I must admit I feared the worst when I received “Rock The Rebel/Metal The Devil” and after it’s first spin I was thoroughly underwhelmed, but after continual listening I began to pick up on the sheer number of different musical elements that came together to create a truly unique sound in a genre flooded with little to no originality. Many bands would fall apart trying to cobble together so many musical styles, yet VOLBEAT integrate them into catchy, unusually upbeat songs which feel truly heartfelt. At once metal and then country but altogether rock, “Rock The Rebel/Metal the Devil” is an album any good Metal or Rock fan would find something to like in.

What exactly are you referring to dte? Some rapper using Enya as a melody now? Do you have a link? Wouldn't Enya have to agree to such? So really it's her fault as much as anyones.

One of my biggest complaints with that genre is the abundance of ripped off melodies. While there is some talented stuff out there, it seems most rappers are content to put their own words to songs someone else created long ago. Are they just lazy or not creative enough?

Speaking of Dio, here's a gem of a song I discovered on Youtube not long ago. It features Tenacious D, Meat Loaf, and Dio.

Recently, I´ve been listening to a bit more idiosyncratic music than usual.
Probably most notable records, all three rather unconventional in their own way, were:

The Shaggs - Philosophy of the World
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTNo80YmRVM
This album may be the musical equivalent of Ed Wood´s Plan 9 from Outer Space and it´s at least equally that charming.

Renaldo and the Loaf - Songs For Swinging Larvae
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3n3MbVoLYns
Music made by this duo consisting of pathologist and architect is a bit similar to early Residents but for example this album is much more fun than anything Residents have released.

Diamanda Galás - The Divine Punishment
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3_xn15YEkE
I really can´t get enough of this album. It´s my favourite from Galás´ Masque of Red Death Trilogy. It´s an honest, furious and, in it´s own fractured way, beautiful record giving me shivers throughout it´s whole run. The final vocal bit in the song I linked, Sono L'Antichristo, makes me smile at how ultimatively badass it is.

You´re welcome. Interestingly, the night I posted the link I´ve listened to her mostly abbrasive works at least five hours straight, then fallen asleep and had some of the most joyful dreams ever. Without a doubt, the woman´s an exorcist .

As of now, I´m listening to Transa by Caetano Veloso. I couldn´t find my favourite song from it, Neolithic Man, so here´s Mora na Filosofia, a bit more conventional, though great nevertheless, song from said album:

For me, the latest creation from my co-worker. I told him I wanted a fuzz bass song. I got Wahl tone, but I love it. Several of the guitar treatments would fit in a gazer arrangement, too. He wasn't sure about the ending, but I think it works.

I guess you´re not a fan of those 12-tone schoenbergian vocals, then ? :)

Dewayne Dobson´s song is cool. A really good sound and lots of cool atmospheres throughout. I think that something´s indeed missing at the end though.

Btw, some time ago I´ve made a song which might partially satisfy your fuzz bass needs. The sound is awful and digital and it´s intentionally over the top so beware.

Thanks for listening! I was pretty sure it wasn´t exactly what you had in mind but having the song called What the Fuzzz, I couldn´t resist :).

Here are some more, mostly quite oldschool, fuzzy bass sounds which I like:

Curtis Mayfield - Don't Worry If There's a Hell Below

Sly & the Family Stone - Higher
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=md7oUJFY_6Y

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abKjC7EX2Zs

And the sickest fuzz bass of them all, Melvins - Night Goat
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EuFXDXuZQ0

Kinda stoney, heh.

Personally, I´m still in the firm grip of Diamanda Galás :).

Here is something a bit different ...

This week we went to a concert at a church we've never even seen before to dedicate a new pipe organ ... and we were invited because the kids' school chorus teacher has a son who taught our kids piano and trumpet this summer. This kid is a trumpet player in a 5 piece brass ensemble who was selected to tour Europe late this summer, so some of the stuff they played this week was also done on their tour.

I bought their OOP debut ep ("Catch and Blur") way back and really enjoyed it, still do for that matter. The arrangements are sorta busy, but the overall presentation is still very smooth. I bought "Moon Shadows" upon release and was terribly disappointed--just too complicated and jarring for what I was expecting. I figured that complaint for me might work out as a positive for you.
