It gets worse. I guarantee. :)

Came over here to inflict the twangy video version of those C & W Sarah Palinly descriptive lyrics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr9aiqaiGk8) I posted the other day in the P&R forum--for those masochistic and/or drunk enough to want to check it out--only if you are somewhere where no one you know can see or hear you-- but what with the Paul & Art reference, have to post this one where Artie is blasted out of his mind:

Right now I'm listening to this, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OETwbVBPI1U) and I think it deserves to be quoted in full:

"Democracy"

It's coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
It's coming from the feel
that this ain't exactly real,
or it's real, but it ain't exactly there.
From the wars against disorder,
from the sirens night and day,
from the fires of the homeless,
from the ashes of the gay:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.
It's coming through a crack in the wall;
on a visionary flood of alcohol;
from the staggering account
of the Sermon on the Mount
which I don't pretend to understand at all.
It's coming from the silence
on the dock of the bay,
from the brave, the bold, the battered
heart of Chevrolet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the sorrow in the street,
the holy places where the races meet;
from the homicidal bitchin'
that goes down in every kitchen
to determine who will serve and who will eat.
From the wells of disappointment
where the women kneel to pray
for the grace of God in the desert here
and the desert far away:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on
O mighty Ship of State!
To the Shores of Need
Past the Reefs of Greed
Through the Squalls of Hate
Sail on, sail on, sail on, sail on.

It's coming to America first,
the cradle of the best and of the worst.
It's here they got the range
and the machinery for change
and it's here they got the spiritual thirst.
It's here the family's broken
and it's here the lonely say
that the heart has got to open
in a fundamental way:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

It's coming from the women and the men.
O baby, we'll be making love again.
We'll be going down so deep
the river's going to weep,
and the mountain's going to shout Amen!
It's coming like the tidal flood
beneath the lunar sway,
imperial, mysterious,
in amorous array:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Sail on, sail on ...

I'm sentimental, if you know what I mean
I love the country but I can't stand the scene.
And I'm neither left or right
I'm just staying home tonight,
getting lost in that hopeless little screen.
But I'm stubborn as those garbage bags
that Time cannot decay,
I'm junk but I'm still holding up
this little wild bouquet:
Democracy is coming to the U.S.A.

Didn't think I could tear up again this morning but that hits the perfect note I think. My memories of Leonard Cohen go back to a smoky den in a galaxy far away with my hippie cohorts listening to Suzanne (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30egIKHT-pM&feature=related), (whose 'place by the river' we once all tried to live in, and maybe part of me still does. )

Thanks for posting.

Back on my gothic-doom Draconian kick, this is probably my favorite band of all time.

Draconian's Myspace (http://www.myspace.com/draconianmusic)

the first three songs on their playlist are from their newest album, and while the first couple stray a little from the old down-tempo, languishing dirges of the past which are what i generally like best - i love them nonetheless! Great songs.

Then they go back to the languishing dual-guitar style on the next track that i like so much. "She Dies" is a great "love beyond death" classic-sounding male/female dirge, one of their best.

Apostasy Canticle is off their second album, which was a concept cd based around the tale of lucifer's banishment, specifically "Paradise Lost". Great passage in the middle of one of the rebel angels pledging themselves to his cause, and there's a classic passage lifted right from Milton once ol luce hits rock-bottom. Towards the end of this cd, the "story" ends and there are some great male/female grief duets, but the majority is growly, slow metal that grows in tempo and double-kick drums, then back to a crawl again.

Then rounding it out is one of their classics off their first cd, The Solitude. The female ending is awesome.

"to greet the niiiiight, the night without end...."

Awesome. I love this band!

"Off Your Face Again" (http://www.myspace.com/danielland) by Daniel Land and the Modern Painters

edit- after a couple days to reflect, I've come to a decision. My tunes probably get lumped in with lullabies and elevator music by many of you, and that's OK. I'm still confident in my conclusion that the last tune from Zakhary is the absolute worst indignity to ears the world over since Jaz put up Daler. ;)

Happy to be of service. There's all sorts of great music out there, just waiting to be heard by the right ears. Zakhary just isn't posting any of it. :D Seriously, though, somewhere in this wide, wide world there's a neanderthal living in a pool of radioactive sludge that's got a smile on what's left of his melting face because he hadn't heard of The Faceless until Zakhary linked it. Sharing is a good thing. Heck, my life was an empty shell until Jazzy shared Daler with us all. After that, it was an empty shell with bleeding ears and scarred corneas, but still...

Not a fan of technical death metal, eh?
Well... yeah, I don't blame you. That shit is pretty extreme, and I can't stomach it myself in too large doses. Didn't mean to offend anyone either, never actually stopped and thought that shit like that might actually offend someone. Now that I think about it.. I heard christian rap once.. and like that wasn't enough already - it was being "sung" ín Finnish. Now THAT offended ME (everything about it was so bad that it physically hurt). But not to worry! I mostly listen to (a bit) softer stuff than that so let's go to the other end of my musical spectrum for a while :D

One of my favourite songs of alltime. "Surrounded" by the masters themselves.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKxTLSSCJGY

"Morning on Earth" by the swedes called Pain of Salvation.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61LLjdbJtJo

"Communion and the Oracle" by Symphony X. The album this is from is an absolute masterpiece.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrC-snv5ly0

"Benighted" an acoustic "ballad" by Opeth.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjtZW_FCSTo

"2084" from Ayreon (one of my alltime favourites too). Can't get enough of those eerie female vocals or the reverberating(is that the/a word?) guitars and the sweeping synths.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03UXA0dEtbA
This is the song that suffers the most from that lossy audio compression.

Hmmm.. No happy music at all, I see. Don't know what it is about that though... I can't stand happy music.

See - I don't hear it that way at all ... they are listening at a level that allows them to exercise harmonic and rhythmic freedom and yet produce something wondrrfully musical.

I don't think the bass and brass are even playing in the same key, Mike.
And this matters for exactly *what* reason? Certainly they are not doing anything that wasn't conceived in Schoenberg's book 'Structural Functions of Harmony'.

Jabberwocky

Well, I find it fairly harmonic ... what I listened to last night (had to follow my wife to drop off her work's 'mobile lab' at a co-worker's house) is a bit less so ... John Coltrane's Ascension (http://www.amazon.com/Ascension-John-Coltrane/dp/B00004TA40/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1227005005&sr=8-1). Got a new discovery for y'all today. While they list the Cocteau Twins, Smiths, and Cure as their influences, I only hear hints of the Cure in one song (One Open). The signpost that fits best IMO is the Sundays. Chanell is no Harriet Wheeler, but her vocals are pretty solid. While I expect "One Open" would be most popular here, I'm going with the tune I prefer:

'Blue Christmas' First popularised by Elvis Presley in the mid-50's - it was written and first sung by Ernest Dale Tubb about a decade? before.
....................
'InThe Bleak Midwinter' appeared in The English Hymnal in 1906, though it first appeared in poetry form written by Christina Rossetti, prior 1872.

I used to sing this "hymm" in the juniors assembly school choir.
there are many artists versions....

Currently listening to Siouxsie's "Sea Breezes"

I'm comparing the differencies with Ferry's original version.
http://www.last.fm/music/Roxy+Music/_/Sea+Breezes

I'ts the endings that get to me....
Ferry's melancholic final verse reflection is 'quiet' and in effect perfect, whereas Siouxie sustains the finale' to a fade-out, also perfect. Very male v female oriented i suspect!

That must be a general block against MySpace. I haven't noticed any problems with the band pages that I visit. I could see where that sort of silliness could be going on in the "social areas" of MySpace, though. Rich sent me a message that "Midwinter" was released on a Projekt sampler many years ago. So neither song is new, just new-to-me. The exciting part is that he said that they've upgraded their home studio recently and started recording. Color me thrilled.

Been listening to a tape I made years ago made up of songs that that have "The River" or a river as their main theme--gads, what a bunch of depressing stuff--like the slickly godforsaken Richard Marx (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgJffiGHz7M), or the Boss here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q3LvjD-eZ8).

Sting (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNP9eLj1WIs&feature=PlayList&p=791971CA2B0CCD8D&playnext=1&index=14) isn't too bad but even that normally perky popmeister Billy Joel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNS4pV9Pls0) has got a river down.

@dte--thanks for the ..invigorating...cover by Erasure. Pretty cool. And you do get credit( though not extra credit) for Proud Mary, and also for making me think of Green River even though both songs have sadly lost their zing over the years. (And while by hard-core rocker standards maybe not, I realize that that Riverfull/Curtain Society clip is pretty cheery for Gazer stuff.)
Can't believe I missed the Talking Heads one--though again, I'm not sure how cheerful it is; at least it presents 'the river' as a place of renewal and not somewhere to commit suicide or murder, so that's an improvement.

My favorite was the last clip, though. Definitely fits all the criteria I had in mind for positivity, plus rock n roll cred and lyrics. If he is saying "You've got to learn to live until the end.." you get a plus 4 on that one.

Thanks for playing. :) My first exposure to that artist/group--it's interesting indeed and the vocals are excellent. I think "The River" qualifies on all fronts--as it seems to be equating said River with Life and stuff.
Appreciate the turn-on.

His overall "bent" is decidedly hippie-esque, so you might enjoy it.

"River" and upbeat was a harder challenge than I expected, but it was fun trying. Perhaps we could have a bit of a game along those lines? Even if we go strictly with a key word, it could be interesting as long as the key isn't overly common.

Ok, so I FINALLY and after a year and a half mind you, get an internet connection that doesn't suck. I see that dteowner has posted a reply TODAY in the whatcha listening to thread! WooHoo! I say to myself. I can respond and chatty a bit and see what everyones listening to ATM. Err, but the response is on "River" which must be new since I have NO idea what band/song/album that is. (And NO, I didn't bacvk up and look at the previous posts. That would be too easy.)

In any case I'm currently listening to Family Guy in the background and thinking about you guys. *HUGS* Miss ya! Hope all is well.

Good to see you around again, Temptress.

We were talking about posting songs with a River theme earlier because I made the mistake of listening to a depressing tape I made in the 80's with the theme of "River'" and needed help to recover. I think dte is suggesting a new "find a song to fit a theme" contest. :)

Jellyfish . . . .Well, putting aside that the band personally disturbs me, I do enjoy the chorus and Thank You Kindly! :)

On the Jellyfish side, I guess they sound ok but I can't get past the hair and duds. I don't feel as old as that statement makes me sound. *grumbles* I guess I think they're a bit odd in a scary clown sort of way and NOT a freaky Sexy (young) Jeff Goldblum way.

HA! And again I'm listening to Family Guy. How odd. :)

I got permission to share a "secret" portion of the Orchards & Vines site, which is very cool because that means I can finally share my second favorite song of theirs. All you musical flower children (looking at you, magerette) should give it a spin. These folks could be a very good Jefferson Airplane cover band if they wanted.

Well, I have ended up enjoying the Ahmad Jamal, but what it also did was make me crave my old 'Live at the Pershing' (from '58). I haven't had it in my iTunes collection for a while and assume it got deletec at some point, so I went ahead and re-ripped it from vinyl. Interestingly, that was a record my parents had from when they first got married. Must have thought it was one of those 'this makes you look cool' things ... since neither of them really knew it.

*Find a song to fit a theme*...

Time to introduce a new theme?

I consider a low deep voice - a bass - to be highly sexy.
Can't help it, dear high-pitched counterparts: according to different studies women prefer men with deep voices. :)

Back to finding songs.
Two men with sexy voices, their songs being appropriate to the time of year:

Crash Test Dummies
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=F7pnv9kPCkU
Tom Waits
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=12qBoy2rhVw
Better version:
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=ktCocv-bBDg

Yes, *bass about Christmas* would be a nice theme - at least that's what I thought. But then I stumbled at Barry White, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, Tom Jones. Oof, that's too sugary for my taste!

Maybe, unusual, weird Chrismas songs/videos would be a better theme...

Anyone? Who has a link that might surprise us?

Oh, heck, prolly not about Christmas, but just one, just for the ladies out there:

That's a pretty tough topic for me, Omega. I listen to a lot more female-fronted music than male-fronted. Most of what I can think of would technically be considered baritone, me thinks. Let's see here...
"The Weight of Love" (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=6547568) by Tears Run Rings (not a typical tune for them)
"Sweet Harmony" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_4RhlGm-nI) by The Beloved
"Love Action" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OHPRtRWqWg) by Human League

For me today, Elika came up with a video for one of their tunes. The vid is fairly good and the song is excellent. The finish is what does it for me. This song came from their debut cd, with a different title. They remixed it a bit and added the second vocal track at the end. The mix pushed the tune a little more toward electronica, which didn't do much for me, but that extra vocal added a ton in my book. Enjoy!

Hey dteowner, hi!

A joiner! :) Thanks! I started to worry, started to think the quest was perhaps too difficult, I had visions that nobody would come up with something that would make any (non)sense...

But no! You came along! :)

I've listened and watched and felt (very important when it comes to bass) to all three songs, and here is their effect:

The weight of love - Tears run rings.
Hmmm. Nothing, no, I feel nothing in my belly. Sorry.
Sweet harmony - The Beloved.
Oof! Sssteamer. Yes, it's hot, hot, hot. :) Sensual voice, sensual video. Laidback. The sax a definite bonus, ah, such a warm instrument (one of my favourites). The lyrics: the seasonal spirit!
Love Action - The Human League. I was familiar with 'Don't you want me, baby?', but this one's better, the voice of the lead singer being stronger and deeper, warm - quite masculine. :)

That means...
leading with 3 bellies is The Beloved with Sweet Harmony, second-best: The Human League with 1 belly, so that makes the winner of the booby prize: Tears Run Rings, they got - sniff sniffle - zero bellies.

---

And for you today Elika...
Thanks for mentioning it. New to my ears. The video is very enjoyable indeed, it's simple black and white, yet commanding your attention. The electric guitar is a bit irritating to me. Still, it is a catchy song, and yes, I agree, the second voice makes it more interesting.

There has been loads of Christmas music recently ... through the 'holiday music' channel on cable, and much of it falling into a few categories:
- 'Classics' - Bing, Sinatra, and so on.
- 'Anyone Can Make a Christmas Album' - there is an amazing amount of CRAP out there.
- 'Duets with Dead People' - so they dug up Elvis to make a new record ... and Natalie Cole apparently needed to feed her habit again ...

I happened across the 'TV Guide' channel and stopped because it was Harry Connick, talking about hit new Christmas CD, and was followed by three others, all talking about their 'fresh takes on Classics and some great new songs'. I have been listening and it typically means 'tired dreck and useless new crap'.

Oh, and Harry, your new CD sucks, and wasn't worth the $2 on Amazon special ...

Got it for my girl for xmas, and we both ended up getting into it over the last weekend. For a modern indie-rock type outfit, they are a little more into the actual music instead of the usual "music as filler" and intro/outro for the vocals.

Vocals really arent anything to write home about, but then again, I dont think think theyre supposed to be. Really good singing wouldnt mix well w/ this, he needs to sound a bit weird instead.

Weird. That's a good way to describe this cd

Not bad, Zakhary. I agree about the vocals, though. Her voice does fine in the chorus where she gets help via multitracking, but she lacks "power" to carry the verses.

New tune from a good indie band that's still plugging. This one is a little more complex than I usually enjoy (I still haven't nailed down the meter in the beginning), which might make it more interesting to some of y'all. Pretty electronica might be the best pigeonhole I can make up for it.

WOW, Arhu. That's a young lady with serious talent. Most excellent.

Need a little help, folks. I'd very much like to share a clip of a tune I DL'd by mistake back when Napster was young and nearly legal. What a cherry I stumbled on. Apparently, this track is strictly a Japanese 7" single that also got tacked on the Japanese version of their hits collection. Perhaps that will be the direction to look, but a year's worth of Japanese in college quickly faded to a grand total of about 2 dozen words that won't do me much good. I don't need the file (it's on a couple torrents)--I just want a stream/sample to share with the world.

At an album a year, I have to admit I burned out on Autumn's Grey Solace a while back. I wasn't thrilled with the direction they were pushing their sound anyway. They just popped up a single from an upcoming cd (wouldn't want to break their streak, I guess) and it's very good. Erin is singing again instead of all that vocal sliding nonsense that she was doing more and more the last 2 releases.

@Arhu: Holy crap, there's two versions of the song... I wonder which one is which. The MP3 I've got is a LOT more lush than that sample (I don't just mean quality, the whole mix is different). Your clip, based on the link, was part of the "tack-on" to the Japanese release of their first album.
