Just finished the NWN mod Wyvern Crown of Cormyr and working through Crimson_Tides_of_Tethyr, and just starting the 3rd person shooter El Matador on the PC.

Getting into Godfather Mob Wars on the PSP, Monster House on the DS, and Unfabulous on the GBA.

It's all great fun if you're into Turnbased Stategy with some rpg elements, more on the fun (let's just do one more mission before I sleep!) side than super serious stuff like Jagged Alliance. It's a great world were you're allowed to like both kinds of games - which I do... :)

I'm stuck in Wyvern Crown of Cormyr. The part where you storm the castle -- I can't succeed. I either bolt past the orcs and make it into the castle, only to be mobbed, or I take out the orcs and they send up the warning signal. However, maybe I need to let that happen.

Anyway, that's what I'm playing. I'm also still doing a bit of Kingmaker, as I never finished it.

Game of the Year, IMO. Such a great game with an awesome atmosphere, even though I got an ugly bug today, as a result of which I couldn't bomb the enemy base :(. However, this is the first time in a month that I've come across a single bug, so it's forgiven. Graphics are beyond words too and the audio is just pure heaven. It's a must for everyone!

I must say that both of those titles you mentioned s**k a**. Sorry, I'm not the swearing type, but they are really that bad :( You should definitely give CoH a try, you're gonna love it, it has some welcome change to the typical - and boring - RTS formula of "mine stuff-build stuff-and-rush".

I recommend that you check out some reviews first so that you get the overall picture. This is not a traditional RTS, it's way better than most of the RTS games released lately. If anything, you can compare it to WH40K Dawn of War, primarily because the same team developed both games.

I have played the demos for warhammer - it is the genre I don't like. I've watched the video clips for CoH and have filed it under 'great games I'll never play - and that is ok'.

I never say never ... as I did a huge list of Adventure games earlier this year (Fahrenheit, Keepsake, Daemonica, Scratches, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, etc ) which I thought I was done with after Myst and Journeyman Project on the Mac about 14 years ago ...

But with my list through the end of the year ... not likely ;)

COH is on my short list, and i still have to play Winter Assault (which is sitting on my shelf) before I can in any good conscience buy Dark Crusade. Relic is great, im so impressed just by what I've played of the first Warhammer title and the COH demo. That's why I'm somewhat worried about another potentially good Warhammer RTS coming up, Mark of Chaos. Why am I worried? Because they arent making it.
Relic is the next Blizzard IMHO.

TXa, hook me up with a link or point me in the general direction of your Dragonshard review. Curious what you thought of it, i liked the game myself as im sure you know by now.

Just begun Icewind Dale 2, after being fortunate in finding an unofficial patch that corrected a bug preventing me from even leaving the character creation screen. So far it's good, but I hope it doesn't turn into a straight hack & slash like the first ID.
Warhammer - Dark Crusade. No experience whatsoever with this mad universe but I'm finding the game very good, so much that I left Company of Heroes aside for now.
Just went through the Call of Duty games (except for the United Offensive expansion), great fun, with the first one in my opinion much better than the sequel.
I'm itching to play an old game, The Magic Candle, perhaps, but that'll have to wait.

I beg to differ on Dragonshard. It was good fun and had a few very interesting twists on the genre.

If anything, you can compare it to WH40K Dawn of War, primarily because the same team developed both games.

I'd say there's a heavy influence from the Kohan series as well. A remarkably deep and different RTS in it's own right.

- Battlefield 2 (every now and then, trying to advance in rank still)
- Call of Juarez (nicely done Western shooter)
- Gothic III (just fooling around now and waiting for patches before really getting into it)
- KotOR II (just finished part 1 recently and casually playing no. 2)
- Thief III (picked this up from the bargain bin for EUR 9.90 the other day and am pleasantly surprised... it kind of got dragged down together with DXIW but it seems like it's better than its rep)

As a "360" user I’m hoping that as time goes on, more and more titles will appear on both platforms, but at the moment (if I mention only rpg’s) one game I am playing which I definitely have in common with you “keyboard & mouse” types, is “Oblivion.”

You shouldn't be worried about MoC. Or should I say don't keep your hopes up? Even though the game's being developed by a Hungarian team, so I guess I should go all patriotic and all that, but I won't. Simply because from what I've seen so far I can't help but feel that this game is gonna be crap. Just take a look at any of the in-game videos on e.g. GameSpot.
Moreover, this is the WH Fantasy universe, not WH40K. I have nothing against fantasy, BTW; I'm adding this just to clear things up.

Yes, it does :) . Especially since you can now turn on 8x AA and 16x AF without having to worry about performance hits. The trees and some of the other vegetation look kind of crappy but elsewise it's really aged gracefully if you activate all those quality enhancing options in your graphics driver.

I believe that IWD 2 is more hack & slash, not less. That was deliberate, if I remember the developer interviews correctly. They were in a crunch, and the fastest way to flesh out the game was to make it a succession of battles. Some of the devs have gone on record as regretting it, or at least as wanting to do more, but they just didn't have the chance.

Right now I'm working on:

- Ultima V Lazarus (fantastic!)
- Wizardry 7 (played 1-6 and 8 but this one fell through the cracks and I am loving it)
- Titan Quest (losing interest quickly)
- Dungeon Lords (almost done TCP/IP with 2 friends - great fun after 4 patches! but but very much a hack and slash.)
- Medieval Total War 2 demo (can hardly wait for the full game!)
- Heros of Might and Magic V (tried to love it, really, but the combat just isn't compelling.)

Getting ready for:

- NWN2!
- Medieval Total War 2
- Prelude to Darkness
- Geneforge 3 and 4

Now if I can only clone myself to get through these in a reasonable amount of time.

360. I mainly bought it for the co-op which was fun, although annoying at times (i.e. my friend doesnt notice I'm on a cliff and decides to advance, draging me into a pit). Overall, I thought it was worth a laugh with some friends.

Currently playing Gothic 3, got it 4 days ago. Most of the time it is playable and runs OK but I wouldn't brag about my FPS.

On the PC I'm ~halfway into Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, would probably be close to finished but for all of the bugs and restarts and extra downloads and crashes ... but when I'm actually *playing* it is great fun.

On the PSP I picked up Medal of Honor Heroes and am a few missions in. This is a pure MoH experience, more like the Allied Assault stuff and certainly better than Pacific Assault. The controls are a bit funky, and I had to crank the turn speed so it didn't feel like I was steering a tank ... but overall not too bad.

The DS is still empty - they didn't have *anything* I wanted at either of my local Toys R Us stores, and my planned purchase of Star Trek: Tactical Assault is on hold for whenever they actually release it ...

Spellforce2-Shadow Wars
I'm not a huge fan of RTS, and to some extent the game suffers from trying to do two very separate things well, but overall, quite addictive. It's nice to play a stable game with no bugs or crashes(so far anyway.)
GalCiv2-Dread Lords
Nice take on the 4X space games--a little redolent of those that have gone before, but since we apparently will never get a decent sequel to MOO2 or Alpha Centauri, it 's there and quite playable for those Conquering the Universe moments.

All you people playing multiple games on multiple platforms--I'm heartily impressed! It's all I can do to keep my memory cells wrapped around one or two plots,GUI's, genres, etc. Too bad the game industry doesn't seem to realize how versatile, adaptable and hungry the non-stereo-typed gamer actually is. ;)

All you people playing multiple games on multiple platforms--I'm heartily impressed!

The way I do it is to control my inputs. I generally have 3 games going at once - one each for the PC, DS & PSP. So long as I keep the genres separated I'm OK - particularly with RPG. I'm sometimes OK with RPG if it is a 'real' one on the PC and an action-RPG on the PSP. Anything more involving is a problem. FPS is generally OK on two systems, unless they are too similar ...

Tomb Raider Legend - Xbox
Been a long time since Ive played a console title, but I was drawn to this one for some reason. Im glad I was, liking it quite a bit. Forgot how much fun bouncing Lara all over the place and exploring old ruins was!

NwN II: Havent really played it. Installed, updated, and good to go, but Im doing the usual day of agonizing over my character's class, race, etc. Playing Tomb Raider whilst I think about it. Thinking of a Wood Elf Ranger or Aasimar Paladin, torn in my decision.

WH40K: DOW - dabbling in this one atm, late-campaign, but still recovering from eye surgery so I'm kinda chillin on the RTS thing right now. I really need to finish this one up and get Winter Assault and Dark Crusade going. Im thinking Mark of Chaos is looking pretty good, seen a good preview or two that are actually making me think it aint gonna be bad.

Im going to come back to Spellforce II some day, it's on ice for now for some reason, I cant get motivated to play it lately. If I do get in the mood for RTS and my eyes are feeling up to it, I end up playing Warhammer, it's just so superior RTS-wise IMHO. I like Spellforce II, but the RTS controls in my opinion are just so lacking!

Dark Messiah! I'm so glad I made it past those spiders... looks like I grew less arachnophobic these days: I could hardly bear to see the Arena, Thief, LoL and Hexen 2 spiders, yet this time around repeatedly shouting 'go away'did the trick. So far I like the game; especially the guards seem to be just as charming as the Arx ones, but I must admit I'm a bit peeved about the Mistress of the Obvious. I mean, come on, the game seems to be cheesecake already, so why waste energy on explaining things which need no explanation? In Strife you had a loudmouthed, invisible female guide, too, but Blackbird didn't get on my nerves the way Xana does. But, hey, I'm used to playing without a sound card, so I just turned off sound. Deaf gaming teaches you to keep your eyes peeled... an invaluable lesson for shooters a la CS ^_^.

@xSamHainx: TR Legend was a lot of fun (I still have to finish it, believe I'm at the Kazachstan level), they did a lot of things right again after messing up the Dark Angel *shudder*. I played Legend on my new PC and was impressed with the "next-gen" graphics. But more importantly gameplay was balanced, diverse and fun. And it has Lara in a tight suit.......
Aasimar Paladin? If lawful good alignment was candy we would all be visiting the dentist right now just by looking at that character......doesn't it limit the roleplaying to just doin' the right thing all the time?

@Jaz: I'm hesistant toward Dark Messiah. I don't like them hijacking the name of one of my favorite franchises (bad reason) and I'm afraid it's a shooter disguised in RPG cloth (better reason?). And it also got spiders.....not big on them either :)

Jaz
November 5th, 2006, 23:40
@slam: I usually like it when a franchise is expanded.
Just think of Earthsiege... a simple mecha game bloomed into a universe filled with more mecha games, RTS/RBTs and MP shooters. Just keeping a tab on Bioderms was great fun. So I don't see why a shooter couldn't be enrichening the MM franchise. Apart from that, I have a soft spot for fantasy shooters/action adventures: IMO Battlespire was, despite the bugs, a valuable addition to the Elder Scrolls franchise, and the Towers of Darkness compilation recently toppled the original Doom series as my most replayed games of all times (calculating: Heretic came out in '94; I played the game at least twice a year since then, which would make 24 bouts minimum).
I'm also one of those folks who squealed with glee when Vincent from FFVII appeared in Ehrgeiz, and Raiden from MK made an appearance in Unreal Championship... yay to franchise crossover!

Despite all this, I understand your fears of something you cherish being ruined by an unworthy sequel/expansion. I guess they are similar to my fears when I heard there was an official sequel to Wolf3D in the making (fears unfounded, as I liked RtCW a lot), or when I heard of Doom 3 (which I didnt like), or Quake 4 (which I found to be a worthy sequel of Q2 despite several shortcomings). And I *know* I'd feel just like you if they announced a Realms of the Haunting RTS ^_^.

@Jaz: Wow, you are sure one heck of a Heretic veteran! Can you play the game by heart like that guy who beat all 256 levels of Pac-man? I probably have to take an A level in speaking console, because sadly half of the games you refer to in your post are at best known to me by name :) I was already getting exasperated by the sheer amount of PC games I still have to play!
I also think Bethesda is succesful in the transgenre expansion of their franchise, Arena, Daggerfall and Morrowind true freeform RPG, Battlespire combat-RPG, Redguard action-platformer (remember that one? It was optimised for Voodoo cards.....bad investment) and Oblivion.....well I can't peg that one just yet but action-oriented is part of the description probably. So I'm not against that. And if Dark Messiah brings new life to the franchise and leads to a proper RPG again, far from me to complain obviously. It's all in the expectation factor anyway, if you expect a proper deep RPG you probably will get disappointed, if you expect a shooter and get some RPG to go with that, it's a pleasant surprise. I'm thinking if I can name another franchise that has done transgenre and succeeded in it. There should be more?

For the PC, I finished Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, and am playing NWN2 and Anno 1701 - both very nice.

On the PSP I finished Ultimate Ghosts & Goblins and Medal of Honor Heroes. I picked up Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories and played some, but now I have Dungeon Siege: Throne of Agony and it has my full attention - best CRPG-like feel on a handheld yet.

The DS is all about Star Trek: Tactical Assault right now - very nice game, quite difficult at times, but very engaging and Trekkie ;)

@Jaz: Wow, you are sure one heck of a Heretic veteran! Can you play the game by heart like that guy who beat all 256 levels of Pac-man? Yes, as far as Heretic is concerend, I know where everything and everybody is. I know the same for Hexen and Doom and most other old favorites as well... which makes them ideal for replaying for a quick fix.
I probably have to take an A level in speaking console, because sadly half of the games you refer to in your post are at best known to me by name :) I was already getting exasperated by the sheer amount of PC games I still have to play!Hmmm... did I speak about so many console games? Mortal Kombat and Final Fantasy VII have PC ports just like Wolfenstein has a console port, for example (I have the Super Nintendo Wolf3D version, too), but at least Ehrgeiz and Unreal Championship are console only titles (and in case you wondered, Towers of Darkness is the name of a compilation consisting of Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Rider, Hexen and Deathkings of the Dark Citadel).
Redguard action-platformer (remember that one? It was optimised for Voodoo cards.....bad investment)I liked it. The only ES titles I didn't play were the handheld titles. And if Dark Messiah brings new life to the franchise and leads to a proper RPG again, far from me to complain obviously. It's hard as heck to survive these days without G3 ... hell, I can't even bare to scroll down to the point where you can see the title of the most recently posted-in thread of the G3 forum, or NWN 2 for that matter.

And things aren't getting better. No money = buh bye 1 GB, helooo oldies. Might as well load up Zork, but I'm 99% sure it'll lag :D

Tactics Ogre: The knights of Lodis

I am still playing this brilliant game too, one of the best games ever. It has true choices... really true choices you can play it through over and over again... and make different choices and you'll really see a significant differnce. Some battles are really tough, and I love that. This game is definetly on the top of my all time top 10 list.... I can't even count the hours I spent playing it.

Gothic 3 - played it for 150 hours (Myrtana only) - now I am waiting for the next patch fixing some quests bugs of the later parts of the game and the ambient sound bug.

Neverwinter Nights 2 - just arrived in Neverwinter - fun game.

Still untouched on my desk - I need more time :)
Gods - Lands of Infinity
Age of Pirates

Right now I'm playing Need for Speed Carbon. As much as I'm into Medieval RPG's, I'm into cars and going fast. I was raised with a love for muscle cars and speed shifting, (I own or have owned several over the years, including a '68 Firebird, a '67 Firebird, a '71 Mustang, '73 Roadrunner, and a highly customized and soon to be very fast '84 Firebird) so finally seeing muscle cars in a game like this is heaven sent for me! It's a great game, looks fantastic, with more customization options than you can beat with a stick! I've definitely got a lot of great new paintjob ideas for my current project. By far the best game in the recent offerings of the franchise.

My Gothic 3 CE should be arriving any day...

The only other title I wait with anticipation is Medieval Total War II. Although never finishing Rome: TW, I still agree that it's the best strategy game ever. I bet MTWII will replace it.

Do you like turn-based as well? Do you like the Civ games?

Actually I typically don't like turn based anything, which is why I never got into KOTOR games, despite my affection for Star Wars. The Total War series is the only exception to this view, and I have enjoyed the series immensely. The main draw for me of course is the real-time combat, but I do love playing on the campaign map.

So, to answer your question, no, I don't like the Civ games, but then again I've never tried them. Wait,... I just remembered, back in Windows 95 days I loved playing the turn based "Lords of the Realm," so I guess I have it in me somewhere. As I get older and my reflexes start slowing down ;) maybe I'll get into them more. In fact, Jade Empire, (which plays like KOTOR if I'm not mistaken) has caught my eye, though I have no real plans to buy it.

I hadn't played them until Civ IV last year and the guys at GamerDad got me into Civ IV - I ended up playing and reviewing the Warlords expansion. It is pretty good. Of course, I've come to love turn-based RPG's as well over the years, which took me a bit coming from my FPS background.

I like these types of adventures; Uru and Myst IV are still waiting to be installed because I wanted to play the games in order. Dark Messiah has kept me from playing Myst III for a couple of days :).
As for G3 - the only customer who ordered it so far due to the reviews told horrible stories, so I'm planning to wait for a clean patch first. What I did was d/ling the demo which I played for about 10 minutes. My rig isn't the newest, and I don't want to plunder our storehouse just for this game, so I'll waive it now to wait for some decent returned hardware to come by my comp. World of Warcraft.

When the on line games first came out my reaction was "no way, I know myself. I will *not* temp fate and try this out. I has the risk of consuming my life"

Wellllll, this September my son thought I need cheering up so when he came to visit he brought his copy of WoW with him, installed it on my machine and begged me to play ... so to make him happy I did so. Can you say "oops"? Looks like I should've listened to my first instincts!

Totally sucked in. I have actually made rules like:
"no more than 2 hrs on a school night" and
"Not on nice days when the sun is out" and
"No matter what is going on in the game - go to the RL party instead" and
"If no dinner eaten, and it is 9 pm, stop playing long enough for a proper dinner".

PS - Yes I bought and installed my own copy after two days of using his.
PPS - Am looking forward to G3 and NWN2 to try and break me out of this addiction!

Still heavily into the sport-sim genre, Im playing Bowl Bound College Football (online league and solo), PureSim Baseball, and Out of the Park Baseball (OOTP) (trying to figure out which baseball game to use for my next historical simulation).

Others Im currently playing (I hardly ever finish games, but install, play, uninstall, play another, go back play some old stuff....) is Space Rangers 2 and Gothic II (although Im still near the beginning and I find it alot more boring than the first, which I actually finished and LOVED). Also have Oblivion loaded up (totally vanilla though. It really hasnt held my interest enough for me to go out and get mods), and am searching all over the darn place for my copy of Dungeon Seige, so I can try out this Ultima V remake.

I love playing mage in DD ... I remember saying that I thought the skill system limited replayability, as you needed skils from everywhere jst to make it through ... and Dhruin basically said "huh?" After replaying I now see that much better - sure it isn't 100% mage, but neither can you max out more than one speciality.

I found MOO2 of limited replay value ... uh ... make that somewhat limited replay, as I prolly played 2 dozen games to completion (maybe a few more). However, I found that the 'creative' attribute was a game crusher. If I didn't take it and an other race did I felt cheated, if I did take it the game was ... not too easy ... but it ruined the flavor of having to make critical choices [Cormac - at each level of a technology you had a choice of which 'thingy' to discover, and could *not* go back and get the others except through trade or conquest. The creative attribute gave you all the options at no additional cost. Creative also took up something like 8 of the 10 points you had to spend when you created your race so it came at a cost, but *well* worth it!!).

MOO2 I gave away when I moved overseas ... but MOO1 was one of the 20 (or so) games I took with me. It is still on my work lap top, and my home PC. I have played literally hundreds of games of MOO. Admittedly I go through phases with it, but it is just such a good *fun* game (to me) that it been on my machines for what, 13 years? Not many games have 1/10th that longevity!

I love it. I played through the weekend although I havent accomplished a lot with my modest Sicilian kingdom. You have to be wary of everyone in the strategic map, lots of deals made, alliances broken, wars declared. I cant say if it's the AI that's unbalanced (in some forums veterans players tend to think so) but it makes a very tense game, and expansion must be carefully thought out, much more so than in Rome TW -- that's my experience at least. Plus you have to decide how you'll build each of your settlements, either city or castle. Great game, really, and I havent experienced some of the new features like the guilds (assassins, templar knights, etc.).

though I'm trying to find time to give Darklands (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=278) a try.

That's my favourite RPG, a fantastic game. I still own the original floppies, the manual and the box ! It's unfortunate that it was a commercial failure, because the devs had hoped to make sequels, one set in arthurian Britain and the other in Renaissance Italy, if I recall correctly.

So you just don't like having a choice? It isn't at all easy to win on the "impossible" level whether your race is creative or not. And, no, it didn't take 8 out of 10- you can get "flaws" to your race (like ship attack -20) and get additional scores to spend. MOO2 is superior to MOO because it has lot more choices- many technologies to discover etc.

It is such a pity MOO3 was a total disaster. But none of the original developers were present, so it isn't at all surprising... Actually, it is still surprising- MOO3 is utterly unplayable garbage.

I hope you don't mind if I ramble a bit... I'm mostly playing Gothic 3 during my spare time... but sometimes I play Never Winter Nights 2 (haven't finished it yet because I got Gothic 3 half way through it). Once in a while I get in the mood to shoot some people online so I play a first-person shooter... which is usually either Battlefield 2 or the Battlefield 2142 demo. If I go too long without the satisfaction of killing other players online I start to go crazy... ha!

After I finish with Gothic 3 and NWN 2 (which I anticipate will be sometime during Christmas break), I'll definitely go out and buy the new Total War 2 game. I have to say that Rome: Total War is at least one of the top 3 RTS experiences I've ever had - right up there with Warcraft III (which I still return to every summer it seems... hmm... games with free online play seem to never completely die for me). Anyway, I really loved the Fear FPS game that I beat during last year's Christmas break so I think I might also buy the expansion for that one. My step dad even beat that game... and he never has time to play games... but it was so fun he couldn't help but take a little time off from work to play it! If only he had the time for RPG games...

@ txa1265: Don't you find it hard to memorize and get used to so many control schemes playing that many games at once? I don't consider myself a hard-core gamer, and only on rare occassions will I play more than one game at a time. When I do, I'm usually fumbling around with the controls for a bit after I switch games.
I am a hard-core Gothic gamer though, and incidentally the reason I bring this up....

When I first loaded Gothic 3 on my PC, I knew it was a Gothic game through and through because my brain switched on 'Gothic Mode' or something. Even though I haven't played either of the other Gothic games in at least a year, as I first started controling the nameless hero I was instinctively groping for the typical Gothic controls, and actually being surprised when he wouldn't do exactly as I 'commanded'!

Anyway, my point is even though the controls have changed etc... the game still screams the personality that saturated the first two - so much so that when seeing it for the first time, my mind (and fingers) went "Gothic 3? Oh yes, we know exactly how this works!"

@ txa1265: Don't you find it hard to memorize and get used to so many control schemes playing that many games at once?
I tend to more or less play one game per platform, which is what I'm doing now - NWN2 has hit back-burner significantly, I have it in another PC and play it just a little here and there. Control schemes in general are very different between systems (PC vs DS vs PSP) that I never get hung up there - but I couldn't be playing similar game types without confusion. For example, if I was trying to play a jRPG like 'Legend of Heroes' on PSP I would get very confused with also playing Final Fantasy III.

I understand. If I'm playing a driving or flying game the same time I play an RPG it's no problem. But if I'm playing, say, Morrowind and Gothic simultaneously, getting the controls sorted out is a nightmare!

Finished Dark Messiah a few days ago and now I'm taking a break from pc games for a bit. Purchased a Nintendo Wii this week, and I've been messing around with that. Right now I'm playing Legend of Zelda 'The Wind Waker'. I've had this game for 3 years and never played it, must say it's pretty interesting so far. Plan on playing the new Zelda game for the Wii as soon as I'm done with Wind Waker.

In the meantime, I'm waiting for the next patch before I start Gothic 3. It works out pretty well actually because I should be getting another gig of RAM about the same time that patch comes out.

Also picked up a copy of NWN 2 last week. Got it the day after Thanksgiving for $24.99. Haven't installed that one yet.

Only get to game on the weekends right now, so I'm still chugging thru my Ironman Wiz8 game. We're headed for the mine tunnels next.

That was a tough and brutal game. What has remained most clearly in my mind about it is the look of the bruised and bloody faces of the party members when they took a beating (which would often happen, in my case anyway).

Bought a Xbox 360 last week so I'm playing with the games that came with it, Gears of War, GRAW, Gun and a compilation of Live Arcade puzzlers. And I started WOW not too long ago. I'm having fun for now with my human paladin although I dont know if I'll keep it up till level 60.

Why the sigh? Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaoes is probably one of the best games I've ever played (don't laugh >_>).

Ah, the memories of walking through those holes and fighting those nasty undead knights in the White Tower, the memories of avoiding holes without my map and my compass in the Castle ... Er, never mind, I think I understand now. <_<

Games I wish to play after my exams...
Oblivion addon: Knights of the Nine
Final Fantasy XII. I haven't even touched my copy yet. =/
Gothic 3. Same as above. Didn't even touch my copy. =/

I think that can keep me busy for a while. >_>

It was a sigh of utter pleasure, as it's one of my all-time favorite CRPGs :). Yet I had forgotten all about how easy it was to get stuck in the first big dungeon...
When I played the game back when it came out on floppies (i.e., for the first time), it took me two weeks to figure out the map-less room. I just didn't GET it, you know. And when I rode home on the bus one day, I was looking out of the window, and suddenly a thought occurred... 'Hey, why *did* they burn the map? They must have had a reason, right? What is visible on the map but invisible otherwise...? Ah yes...'

@Cormac: Yes, it 's definitely brutal. And the faces your team members make when surprised are scary. A bit like the face the original Doom guy makes on quite rare occasions, and it scared me out of my pants back then.

Finished up Gothic 3 for the PC and dove headlong back into NWN2, where I'm currently perfecting my stronghold ... really liking it.

Still playing Final Fantasy III DS, and have gotten a decent amount into it - it is very polished and nicely done!

On the PSP I've finished GTA: Vice City Stories which I found pretty disappointing (except for the excellent music), and am now excitedly getting started with Star Wars: Lethal Alliance ... nice non-Jedi action game made specifically for the PSP & DS.

BG 1 with the expansion. With the TUTU conversion to utilize the BG2 engine extras like higher resolution. That is until the game actually messed up with everything and now my party slogs around the map. On my third restart.
Otherwise, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance for the GBA. a descent button mashing action game in my opinion, but far from great.

Sucked back into Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War. Making my way thru the campaign again, and wrestling pc opponents in the skirmish mode. I swear, I have almost as much fun designing my own faction motifs (name/paint/banner/badge) as I do playing the game itself. I frequently use my Brotherhood of Steel and Space Tigers as my team, and the Black Guard (Danzig skulls) or 40th Reich as my foes. I need to post pics of the 40th Reich, think "space nazis from hell", they are too badass looking.

I got Dark Alliance for Xbox gathering dust in the stack. Grabbed it for ten bucks used, played it for like 20 minutes or so of combat time, and there it lies. What annoyed me immensely was the way that enemies just come clipping across the screen when you enter a new area. I like to enter an area, asess the situation, and attack accordingly. Instead, I found myself just stumbling from one fight to the next. No grace whatsoever, big points off from the Tiger.

Every once in a while I get the hankerin' to play a space combat game. So even though I'm in the middle of G3, I suddenly decided to purchase DARKSTAR ONE, based on 2 or 3 decent reviews. Boy am I disappointed! I'm really trying to like it, but I'm finding the flight physics to be horrid, and the trading layout totally buggered. Of course I've been jaded ever since INDEPENDANCE WAR and its sequel, which were rediculously hard, but at least were incredibly well written and realistic.

Did you try Space Rangers 2, or Gal Civ 2? They are quite good!!

Jabberwocky
December 9th, 2006, 00:14
No, I haven't tried those. What's Space Rangers like? I don't think I've seen Space Rangers 2 on a store shelf, and maybe I'm wrong but I thought Galactic Civ 2 was turn based.(?) I really don't like turn based. I like to feel like I'm sitting in the cockpit...joystick n all.

I really enjoyed Freelancer, but was disappointed that it didn't support joystick flight. Darkstar One has tried to imitate Freelancer to an alarming degree - the menu layouts are identical, the trading concept is the same, the news system, even some sound effects are identical. Unfortunately it executes none of these things equal to or above Freelancer. The controls are waay too sensitive, with either joystick OR mouse. There's a function for turning down joystick sensitivity, but it doesn't work right. Instead of actually adjusting the sensitivity, it just makes your ship turn and roll slower - actually handicapping it's manueverability! Oh well... lesson learned - never trust a review anymore, and go back to playing Gothic 3....

tachyon: the fringe -with bruce campbell, all you need to know

i had originally bought gal civ 2 boxed version, so when gods:loi came out on totalgaming.net i didn't have much incentive to cough up 70 bucks (2 months of gaming for my budget) to buy it as that is really the best deal. finally i did a few weeks before gothic 3 came out, along with daemonica (an intersting game which i didn't get a chance to finish), but got stuck at the final boss and never got any help back at the dot. its hilarious there was one poster on the cyprion boards who alluded at least 3 times in different posts how he knew how to do it and had written it somewhere, but i could never find it. i then a few weeks ago used up the rest of the credits on space rangers 2, at quite a deal, and preorder the expansion for gal civ 2. who knows when i'll get around to playing either, but that's the great thing about totalgaming, you own them forever. you can also get demos for seemingly every game they offer, can't beat that i say.

i haven't played many space piloting games, though i did get through the 2nd act in indepence war II which i enjoyed alot. i think moon patrol was the last game i had a joystick for though...

i have quite a number of games to keep me busy 'til bioshock comes out, and am currently about to finish my first full campaign in medieval 2: total war-go hungarians.

You also might find X2 and X3 to your liking!! Dte is our resident expert on those games!! Not so. Dhruin and Xen are waaaaaay ahead of me on those. In fact, I've got X3 sitting in the box still since I don't have the hardware to run it. I did follow both pretty closely for the Dot, but that was more a "newshound" function. Heck, I never made it thru the final battle on X2, although I am planning on revisiting the series when I finally invest in a new rig.

I do wholeheartedly recommend the series, though. Target had put X3 on clearance recently for $5, which is why it's collecting dust on my shelf right now (I don't usually purchase games I can't play).

December 11th, 2006, 01:37
Well guys, I'm afraid I must be a little different or something, because about a year ago I bought X2 and took it back the same day. (Somehow managed to convince them on the return.) I found the economy tedious and the combat flying (I believe I've posted this phrase before) a little like trying to swat a fly with a rolled up magazine. I know there are a lot of hard core X2 fans out there, and I don't knock them, it's just not for me.
X3 looked really cool but my experience with X2 shied me away. If they drastically improved the trading and building interface, and completely overhauled the flight physics engine, I might give it a go. Any opinions on that?...

dteowner
December 11th, 2006, 14:33
@JDR- doesn't have to be time-consuming if you're a skillful pilot with no patience, but most likely you're gonna want to invest a ton of hours.

@Jabberwocky- If you maxed out your steering, you didn't stand a chance. The ships were overly responsive, bordering on un-flyable, if you cranked the steering much above 20%. I think Xen (far and away the best pilot I ran into) did all his flying with the keyboard, which is sacrilege for joystick-wielding space simmers. The interface was something you had to get used to. Once you learned the hot keys, it wasn't too bad, but until you got to that point getting to the info you wanted was pretty painful.

Jabberwocky
December 11th, 2006, 16:02
Well, as I remember the manual and tutorial was so vague that I didn't know there WAS a joystick sensetivity control... I think someone on rpgdot forums told me about that after I had already taken the game back. Oh well... I may give X3 a chance someday if nothing else comes out by the time I'm ready for it. Darkstar One was somewhat of an impulse buy. I really need to finish Gothic 3 and Medieval Total War II before I get something else. (Oh...but who am I kidding? I'll never fully finish a MTW II campaign - they're just too long! but I still feel I get my money's worth of enjoyment out of any in the Total War series).

Thanks for the tips!

Still working on Final Fantasy III DS, and completely loving it. The random battles are occasionally frustrating, as is the 'save only on over-world' system. But the stor, characters and overall presentation are really well done.

On the PSP I've had to go back and replay parts of GTA: Vice City Stories for another review, and found it hard to not just drive around listening to the music ... , I also played Star Wars: Lethal Alliance, which was pretty good but not great. Fear

I really haven't played good old fps for a while. And fear slipped past when it was released, so i gave no second thought when saw it in bargain bin. Only 7 euros!

Gothic 3.

Despite what critics say. g3 is a stunning game with lots of depth.

Hitman bloodmoney

I have been a fan of the series since orginal codename 47. Bloodmoney may even be best hitman game of all. I have always adored the freedom that hitman games offer, a thinking man's shooter so to speak. Its really rewarding when you can kill your mark without anyone noticing

Game feels a lot more realistic this time. Mr.47 can only take few bullets now before going in slow motion. So blasting levels through ain't as easy as before. Enemy ai has gotten smarter too (expert diffulty level here).

Level design is suberb as always. All the maps are HUGE and the design really encourrages you to try different methods So far i managed to beat half of the levels with a silent assasin rating..yeah thats something to be proud of in case you didn't know. :)

Lots of new cool weapons too. 47 can also modify/upgrade his weapons with silencers, scopes, laser sights etc.. Also many neat gadgets can be bought. Same goes with intel. During the mission a player can buy new intel from the agency if he feels totally lost.

What i really dig are those brutal krav maga type close combat moves that mr-47 can pull of unarmed. Such as grabbing a firearm from someone's hand or breaking a nose with a headbutt etc ...lots of cool stuff

In addition the gameplay has changed too. If you leave whitnesses or take unnecessary lives or let someone photograph you or leave your "suit" behind or don't cover the bodies etc,.The next level will be a lot harder, because you were sloppy or triggerhappy. A pro never kills needlesly. While it is possible to buy a new indentity or bribe the police, at the end money doesn't grow on trees.

I'm replaying grim fandango too. Its a shame that lucas arts doesn't make game like these anymore :(

neverwinter nights 2-played for about 10 days then put it 'on ice' a week or so ago when i had recieved my stronghold. i fully anticipate going back to it soon, though that is one achilles heel in party based rpgs for me: i like to play games often to organized and cautious which gets to be a problem with 'x' party members items and skills whereas in citybuilding/strategy games (my other love) it can be a boon. it's run great on my computer and haven't had a single crash. i read somewhere that they had an original voice for neeska that was different but opted to use a 'new' one. this reminds of useless trivia that the 'goo goo dolls' choose that name over one they had had before. the game is far superior to the original for me though which i played for about 5 hours a year ago and then uninstalled.

medieval total war 2-what can i say? i live life as a pacifist and love every total war game ever made. this is by far my favourite one though since the original shogun. i played a quick england campaign, and very long hungary campaign, and started a turk campaign straghtaway after finishing my second playthrough of gothic 3. but then i got an 'rpg' itch after a month and opened up nwn2. and now i am back halfway or more through a long russian campaign.

bad day la-picked it up on gogamer last month along with psychonauts for $18 including shipping. i'll right a summary/review of it when i finish it. i made the incorrect remark in another post that i was buying it because was made by the same people who made blade of darkness and scrapland. though scrapland and bad day la both have the american mcgee stamp and were published by enlight. enlight developed bad day la along with games like 'joan of arc' which i guiltily admit to enjoying. mercury steam is the one that made scrapland and blade of darkness(under a different name). they are working on this game below which although i have never playing any clive barker games and not really a fan of his movies it could have good melee combat perhaps. jericho

I tried to like Joan of Arc.

It was one of those games that I really wanted to like, you know. Great idea, nice action, fun little RPG elements, history geek fun, awesome maps, hot babe in armor, good enough graphics, it started out pleasant enough. By the time I got halfway thru the second RTS portion, the game just became too annoying for me to go on. I cant remember too many specifics other than monumentally idiotic Ai of the likes I have rarely ever seen, because that whole couple days is shrouded in a strange red mist.

All I know is that it takes a whole hell of a lot to back me off even a bad game that I'm dead-set on playing, "Wars and Warriors: Joan of Arc", however, was able to accomplish this feat. I just finally threw up my hands, Alt+F4'd it, and uninstalled.

So I am playing BG2 for what must be the nth time (I have just lost count) using some of the mods (Fade, ease of use, unfinished business etc). I am still finding different ways to complete the fights and the mods help to keep things fresh.

I am amazed at the number of people who seem to play several games all at once. How do they remember exactly what was going on in each game?

I usually mix the genré's. When I play a long RPG I usually take FPS games as a break. FPS games are usually rather short but "stress" another part of my brain and thus help me to regain energy for the RPG. For the first time in a long time I am actually playing two large RPG's at the same time (Divine Divinity & Titan Quest). Luckily the story in Titan Quest is near non-existant and I play it so I can play something with my girlfriend in multiplayer, thus I do not forget the story in Divine Divinity.

Sometimes when I say I play more than one game at once, I have only installed a game and watched the intro when some other game with higher priority came first, so I am actually not playing them at the same time, they are just on my harddrive to take up when im done with the game that came first.

I play Spellforce 2 and Sam & Max 2 Episode1 (Culture Shock).
The first Spellfoce was the game that took my attention towards RPG's, so I really waited the 2nd one.
The old, original Sam & Max is one of the funniest games ever, and this sequel is also has that great humor.

Back to Gothic 3 since Monday, despite the fact that bugs really start bugging me at this particular point in the game. I stopped playing NWN2 after a plot twist - I need a couple of days to recover from the shock... heh, I must be getting old or something (Just tired perhaps?). ;) Come to think of it, I just might play NWN2 (Which is as buggy as G3, I might add) this evening, although I should be studying for a certain test.

I havent been playing anything lately, trying to get into a couple diff local PnP groups. Geeking out on 3.5 rulebooks and all that, printing out character sheets and what not, I feel like I'm a kid discovering D&D all over again with that first set of rulebooks and dice.
Which is not saying that I dont have things I want to play, and even have a cool little bargain game called "Fate" on the way via Amazon. I played it at a friends house and was instantly hooked, I must play more. Still in quick, el cheapo titles mode.

But alas, looming on the horizon like a spectre of a long-lost dirty habit left in the teenage years.... WoW, and more specifically, The Burning Crusade

I re-installed and logged into WoW tonight for the first time in prolly 8 mos, Im guessing longer perhaps, I dont have it marked on a calendar or anything. To my dismay, I pretty much know practically nothing of how I had my game configured. Chat commands, interface is all stock, macros gone, keys are all uncustomized. It's suprising that for how long I played this game, I'm a babe in the woods all over again in some ways. Here I am, the former second-in-command of a guild on his elite mount, pretty much consistently in the top 3 damage-dealers in any given raid I'm in, now wondering "How do I even draw my weapon?" LOL

My pack is filled with food, items, all kind of stuff, what do I need? I was a jack of all tradeskills, so I have raw mat'ls of all kinds. My bank is full. I just sat there for like an hour trying to reconfigure my keys and sort things out,and I'm still in WTF mode. I have some kind of stone to get back to town, right? Oh yeah, the hearthstone! At least Im loaded with gold too in case i sell something I need.

I knew then and there that I'd have to sleep on - "Do I even want to do this? What am I doing here?" There are still people playing that of course want me to come back and play, and in a way I want to, but I dunno. There is no grey area with this, either I commit and go back to playing WoW or I dont. If I do, I almost want to start again with a brand new lvl#1 char, truly start over again. Even without Burning Crusade, there's a ton of new game content. Yeah, that'll happen.

Gonna have to sleep on it, this is a pretty tough one, expecially since my friends are all jazzed thinking that ol 'Paws is back.

PC - lots of random fiddling with games ...
Oblivion & Knights of the Nine - started a new game for this, and it is strange. As soon as Picard died I started getting quests popping up throughout the sewers for no reason - including the Horse Armor notice stating that I had 'found something' - huh? In the sewers?
Betrayal at Krondor - got this working on XP with DOSBox, and looks interesting after a quick bit of play!
Icewind Dale II - made some progress, but am obviously distracted.
Geneforge 4 - really cool stuff.

PSP - in a holding pattern waiting for Legend of Heroes III: Song of the Ocean, so I've been playing some Legend of Heroes II: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch as well as SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 2 and Medal of Honor: Heroes

DS - finished everything I needed to do for reviews (last was Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin ) so now I'm casually playing Children of Mana while also noodling around with StarFox Command, Mario Hoops 3 on 3 and also just bought Elite Beat Agents. Children of Mana is good, but pushes me into jRPG overload so I'm not playing it much.

GBA - waiting for Maze of Fates to arrive, and replaying Summon Night: Swordcraft Story 2 with the boy and a different Guardian Beast.

Oblivion Update - I have become Arena Champion at level 1 using a Pure Mage ... it was really not all that hard. I hadn't done it the first time I played (as a BattleMage, I *assumed* the arena was for warriors ... I fell for the whole thing that you were playing a class since they make such a big deal about it in the sewers - now I know better!)

The Blademaster had some funny lines, but apparently the fact that I used magic as much as blade & block was lost on him ...

Also, I took on the quest for the identity of the Gray Prince, but since I killed him I could never complete the quest - but yet the quest shows up as 'completed' rather than 'failed'. Is this some of the 'we don't want to hurt your feelings' stuff?

No - they weren't error messages, just those in-game informational popups that occur occasionally. And it was just that it was jarring *when* they occurred - especially since I've already played. And it is referring to places I've never seen in-game as if I found things there - despite being in a sewer near the prison.

giving neurohunter another go after a year of bitterness thanks to JDR13. i was way off on how early on the game i didn't trigger something i should have. since the game has many solutions to quests/getting items i somehow didn't trigger a response with 'kathyrn' only about 10 hours into the game. i went on to play the game for probably another 30+ hours completing most of the story but then needing something from her and was screwed. i'm not nearly as far as i got before but at least i think i'm in the clear this time. a word of caution to anyone playing the game though is save often and be careful what you steal, delete off a computer, or lockpick your way into something or somewhere you probably shouldn't be yet. but i'm having fun with this, to me, top notch 'b' game.

i also played and completed bad day la over last weekend. worth the 8 dollars i payed for it and probably not much more. there are some hilarious, and some extremely over-the-top. if you consider yourself a firm believer in all 'american polices' you probably want to skip this game though you do get to shoot lots of 'terrorists'. but the average person should enjoy it as long as they don't spend more than $10. the demo is a good example of the humour but a bad example of the 'fun'/gameplay factor. the first level and part of the 2nd level are extremely long, tedious, and not very exciting. it gets signifigantly better. here are some screens i took.

not a game for kids though, or the politicaly correct. about the most offensive thing, to me, in the game is the main character going to save a baby during the 'earthquake' level and it smelling so bad that he refuses to pick it up and he procedes to 'dropkick' it to his mother...i felt like a moster though when i laughed at what he said.

@curious--Bad Day LA screenshots are pretty funny. They obviously aren't on to the "Graphics Rule" concept.

I'm playing my Christmas list games-pretty hooked on Titan Quest, though it has it's very predictable moments. Also started playing the Hammers of Fate expansion to HOMM5--which some poor loved one paid full price for no doubt. It is way too easy so far(I guess those internet complaints that H5 was "insanely hard" were taken to heart) I usually don't have what it takes to play on Heroic difficulty, but I may have to to keep from going to sleep. Like the dwarves, tho-very nice new faction.

Well, I was playing Gothic III up until right before Christmas; I had explored almost the entire outside world, did a lot of quests, and started some stuff in Nordmar, then I decided to wait until another patch or until an expansion comes out, as the game was kind of breaking my heart a little. I like it a lot, but it's just not the same as the previous Gothics. It was the little things like not being able to climb and the odd feel of the combat that was depressing me; plus I had been SO very psyched up about it that the little things that bother me about it, which I would probably overlook in any other game, seemed like bitter painful disappointments. Also, my girlfriend is working her way through Gothic II so I'm letting her hog the computer anyway. Oh, and I don't really have any time to play.
I've gotten pretty far into the text adventure "Anchorhead" and I've watched my roomate play the new Legend Of Zelda game on his Wii. Man, I want to play that something fierce! I made up for my envy by loading up Secret of Mana on my SNES and playing that for a while instead. I love that game.
I also log into Dark Ages of Camelot for oh, 5 to 10 minutes once a week or so to make sure my rent is paid and see if any of my guildmates are on... and they aren't. So sad.

This game uses so many things from Diablo, even down to the red buttons with the crosses, that I wouldnt consider it a clone. Fate is a full on Diablo tribute.

I couldnt help but notice that the big cat models are almost identical to the big cat models in World of Warcraft too, even down to their ambient breathing animation. Both kinds, the solid purplish one and the white tiger, tusks and all, pretty clear resemblance to the WoW cats

I cant believe some of the stuff I was fishing out of a lv17 pond last night. It was these legendary items one after another, I started thinking the game was bugged or something. It was funny in a way, because I needed fish for my pet, I was almost like "another damn legendary item!"

check some of these out (and what theyre worth), these were all caught in like a 10 minute span, no joke-

item6 (http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-3/668811/fate06.jpg)

I went back and fished out a few more a little while later, look at that robe!-

item7 (http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-3/668811/fate13.jpg)

So far I find it quite hard, but fun. The music is so beautiful, and I'd forgotten how pretty those hand-painted backgrounds in the infinity engine are.

Have you seen the 'NWN2 ending" poll up in the spoiler forum? opinions seem to be devided about the ending, so it might be a personal thing. I don't mind characters dying at the end if it works--that is, strengthens the game experience as in Planescape Torment--but I also get attached to my characters-that's the point, right?--so if it's a futile or unjustified death then that would blow it for me. (Not reading that thread at the moment to keep objective.)
I never finished IWD2 either. (It kind of fell apart and just kept repeating itself after awhile) The combat style in both is quite a change from NWN2 but once you get used to it, IMO it actually gives you a lot more options.

True enough - they were unable to get retail acceptance for the big game stores, as an indie publisher for the GBA. But it is the publisher selling through eBay, not some random goon ...

Or - I also saw one on Goozex today (the trading site) - they *do* support Canada and if you are interested, pop me a PM with your email and I can send you an invite.

I seriously hope I'll be able to get hold of that one over here, else I'll have to import it. ;)

Since they have not been able to get retail space ... it seems unlikely it will sell elsewhere ...

Tempting, but I'll have to pass for now. I went overboard last month with books from amazon and what's left for entertainment is reserved for Europa Universalis 3. Thanks for the offer, though.

I might have to ask my american friend for another favor then. Fate was wel worth it, and it sounds like this game will be as well ;)

Right now I'm deep into Gothic 3. Lovin' it, even with some buggy stuff now and then, I just shamelessly exploit some of it :) The game itself runs quite smoothly on my system on max detail, only some stutter in crowded areas. I like searching for NPC's and locations for a change, no handholding here. Been also doing some retro stuff with System Shock 2 but ran into one of my quirks: I sometimes play just to the end of the game without really finishing it. Atmosphere was great though, even with the dated graphics. Had a blast with Lego Star Wars II, I got hooked seriously on that for some time (finished it on 100%). I also started a character in NWN2, but then my girlfriend pointed out that it actually was her birthday present (from me!) and that she could claim first play.....she was right offcourse so I put my character on the shelf for the time being. I was impressed though with what I saw, even with the first chapter not being up to Black Isle/Obsidian par. After Gothic 3 it's NWN2 or the Oblivion bug has to bite me again.

It's a typing instruction program, Cormac. It's all about the keyboard. ;)

Haven't done much gaming recently, to be honest. Mostly FastCrawl for such time as it is.

easy on my homegirl there, Mag!
Mavis is caring, but firm ='.'=

I'm getting better, but I aint 40 WPM yet, which is what she's pushing me to get before I advance to the next level.

Besides that, I havent been playing any video games lately, playing PnP instead. Studying D&D books (just got Player's Handbook II and Complete Divine) and making up chars, and doing "dry runs" vs creatures and each other and such, making up dungeons, geeking out on cool pc utilities, etc. Spent most of yesterday night messing with Hero Workshop (http://www.heroworkshop.co.uk/). By no means a necessary thing, but I just love this kinda stuff. Helps me check new chars I make of advanced level. Been playing mostly on the weekends, have a game with a new group this weekend. I'm totally into the "divine" classes, Paladin, Cleric, etc.

Totally tearing into my pc gaming time, but it's worth it, I'm having lots of fun, totally rediscovered the joys of this game. The books can actually be gotten unbelievably cheap on Amazon. Got Complete Divine for like 15 bucks, and a couple weeks ago got Unearthed Arcana for 9.99! Perfect condition. No joke!

Finished the single-plkayer campaign of Dungeon Siege.

I started the Multiplayer-Campaign for myself (as a host), and I believe they mixed things :

- The Single-Player Campaign should be the Multi-Player-Campaign
- The Multi-Player Campaign should be the Single-Player Camopaign

The Multiplayer part looks and feels sooo much more detailed than the Singleplayer part. One more reason to regard this game as crap.

This is the age of Single-Player Games dying out. Yuck.
All Goodies towards Multi-Player !

(Sorry, but I'm in bad mood after seeing this difference - and yes, this IS a huge difference to me !)
