View Full Version : What's your age group?

Jaz
February 27th, 2007, 18:04
The question has been raised in another thread: what's the age group of our regular visitors (who are also active in the forums)?
EDIT
Like narpet I'm in the 39-44 group.

BTW very nice avatar change Jaz. After all those strange looking strange things, we have nice, handsome girl...

Where's the category for "Get off my lawn, you whippersnappers!"? Corwin needs somewhere to put his "X". Perhaps a "damn near dead" option for me?

Jaz
February 27th, 2007, 18:26
There were just 10 slots to distribute, so I had to choose wisely...

@Dani: I picked a new avatar out of necessity, not because it was a perfect match; I'm afraid each of the 'strange looking strange things' had more in common with me than Wendy does!

Prehistoric fossilized cranky grandma category for me--you young sprouts!(57-62)

Jaz
February 27th, 2007, 18:35
Should most visitors fall into the 'under 15' or 'over 62' categories, I'll create a new poll, promised!

Why not put it onto the friont page ? :)

But ... I think there is a difference between visitors of the front page and of the forums. I guess that forum visitors are rather geing "into the depths".

So ... personally, I'd make these two polls out of it. ;)

Nevermind, I'm getting 38 late this year. :)

I think I was 26 once....what did I used to do then? Ah yes..never mind :)

Corwin

If you can still remember what you were doing when you were 21-26, I begin to doubt you're REALLY in the 57-62 age bracket!! I think I remember remembering!! lol

It's really strange to see so low number (nearly zero) of young people. I'm sure this is the largest gaming community of age groups. I wonder if we could do more to attract them...

Start covering consoles and add scantily clad women to the layout background. ;)

Well, and that youngster might be me. 19 is the age of my splendid body. :-/

But I don't think RPGWatch should change their recipe and features to attract young people. That would be the first step to a populistic downwards spiral, where it is the viewers who decide the content and not the content who decide the viewers.

It´s another RPG site full of flaming and aggression. Their users often behave like badly educated teenagers. Of course the site also has certain positive aspects.

Maybe Mo wanted to give you a hint where the other teenies are.

Well, because I'm apparently a kiddie, I'll use the "he started it!" defence :p

Seriously though, pre-ESF in-flux I imagine that the spread would be similar, but with more people in their early 20's (and only perhaps one true oldie). It's just that there is a much higher level of disgruntlement.

BTW, which age bracket did you land in Corwin?

Corwin
March 4th, 2007, 01:26
Actually, I'm not surprised at the age spread since 'true' rpg'ers tend to be people who began back in the days of Gold Box, Ultima, and Wizardry. We know what we like in an rpg and say so. The younger crop seem to like different things in the main, though there are exceptions.
Shag, since I'm retired now, even an old Kiwi sheep farmer like yourself should be able to figure out which age bracket I'm in!! :smartass::biggrin:

Bah, I never thought I'd need to worry about what kind of arches my feet have and what shoes I run in. Never thought I'd have messed up knees. Or a constantly sore back for that matter. Never thought I could start getting a beer belly (how perverse is it that being in the military I don't have enough time to stay fit?).

I may only be 22 technically but I feel like I should be as old as Corwin.

In real life most of my friends are younger and I'm almost always one of the eldest, on this site it is just the opposite :D
I have been a lurker too on rpgdot for a few months before I joined there, but when you guys moved to this place, I followed as soon as I could.

Two things:
- I don't think it 'makes you young' so much as it reflects a certain outlook that allows for the use of technology and imagination as a legitimate hobby.
- The median age for gamers is actually late 20's, not teenagers. And it increases by the year, as so many of us who grew up with some form of games (be it Pong or arcades or whatever) age and pass it on to our kids and share it with them.

Here there are plenty of people my age (and younger) who actually think a pc is only good for email and photo-shop.But playing games?? Nah.

Even five years ago there were a lot fewer older people on computer. I think it's because they've moved into the workplace, and people have HAD to learn to use them.

There are people at my last job who probably have trouble using a TV remote who were forced to learn how to clock in, run a cash register, etc thru pc menus, and now are educated enough to have AOL. It's a triumph of capitalism! :p

When I was your age, PC's didn't exist!! Do you know how angry that makes me!!!! YEARS of my life were wasted by there being NO PC's!!!!!! :)

In all seriousness, I often feel envious of you elderly folks that you were spared the scourge of addictive video games during your youthful years. When contemplating on all the things I may have missed out on while sitting in front of the computer, I can't help thinking I should probably postpone my gaming hobby another 40 years or so until I retire. It's even worse for the youngest generation. The amount of time kids spend sitting in front of a screen nowadays is downright scary.

Sometimes I wish I would just wake up one day in a world in which TVs and computers didn't exist. And it's at times like this, when, overcome by a yearning to escape the oppressive omnipresent grip of technology, I start up the computer and invoke my favourite virtual medieval fantasy world where wild beasts roam the forests, wooden huts speckle the landscape, and there aren't any automobiles or power lines in sight. But beneath the din of medieval instruments and the whine of the CPU fan, I can always hear a faint laughing sound. An unpleasant, ironic laugh arising from the depths of the machine - mocking my futile attempt to free myself of its tyranny.

An unpleasant, ironic laugh arising from the depths of the machine - mocking my futile attempt to free myself of its tyranny.

I often feel the same way, but then I remember that I have learned much with the help of the computer and it's video games/internet. I now know more English than anyone of my age I've met (in real life) so far, am even competing in the state olympics, am more intelligent than your average kid (not theory-wise, mind you; apologies to Corwin, but I suck at math), am quite handy with informatics (could even make my career on it) and several other things, including humor, although for some reason I can't seem to get my groove on on this forum >.<.

In my opinion, every generation has to make do with what they have, and exploit it. There may be many who just play video-games non-stop (God knows I've done it all too many times), but this kind has existed 50 years ago as well. I've no idea whether the procentage has increased in those 50 years, although I tend to think it's pretty much the same.

El fin. Yet another post that only confirms what others think and adds nothing to anyone's knowledge. Just feeling talkative this evening.

You're just an honorary geez til you hit fifty, dte--then you'll be inducted into the depths of physical torment, memory loss, and clothes that just don't look right on you anymore. You'll hear gazer music in the elevator on the way to get your plates adjusted and gnash what's left of your gums. Goth's won't have to die their hair or skin white anymore, and people will avoid driving with you. You'll see. (I won't mention what the adolescent years of your offspring will do to you--that would be cruel) So revel in your (comparative) youth, son :wry:

Every drop of testosterone in the house will be taken out and shot by the estrogen brigade. Leaving you standing :speechless: :wall: :end: and looking all over for a

Hello all, long-time lurker here... I'm 32 which places me just 'over the hill' of the gaussian distribution.

I actually wanted to comment briefly on the "lurker" sub-thread that was posted a number of comments previously. We lurkers are here because we respect the opinions of the members of this forum, but don't generally have much to add to the discussions. I use RPG Watch (and dot before that) as a research tool to find obscure/upcoming RPG titles that would go unnoticed by sites like GameSpot. It's nice to read a gaming forum that contains useful information without degenerating into the all to common flame wars.

Keep up the good posts all -- I'll be reading! :)

As long as there are people older than me, I feel good about it. ;)

The problem with this is I haven't seen many meeting this description lately and it's got me kinda worried

By the way Mike, great handheld reviews! I actually feel like I have played the game after reading your articles. Why can't Gamespot hire you?

Why do I always get stuck in the age group with Corwin? And did anyone do the carbon dating on dirt to find out Corwin's age yet? hehe ;)

Yeah right, that's funny, because you're not in the same group. But you two make such a wonderful team... :p

Which group for each of them? I've always wondered how old Corwin really is.

Finally found out who's the oldest at rpgwatch by just looking at the calendar. Quite suprised there are older things here then CM and Corwin.

@CM You do know that carbon dating isn't quite the exact as some would let us believe? They are frequently off by a hundred years when measuring more then a thousand years back. And it isn't good enough to measure really old things -> Like I said before, the speed of light doesn't appear to be a constant after all. Still we accepteds it being so to measure for fossiles.
So for Corwin there just can't be done any exact dating

I watched too many horror and monster movies and most characters who did the carbon dating analysis usually got tore up into pieces. So...
