View Full Version : The Video Game Trivia Thread

Icefire

Ok. Let's have a trivia thread for video games. No "googling" or searching for answers. Answer the question correctly, ask the next question. Wait for confirmation from asker to make sure you are correct. If after 24 hours no correct answer consider everyone stumped and ask new one. I will start with an easy one.

What is the name of the end boss in the first Quake and what method did you need to kill it?

I know it sat in a pit of lava and you couldn't use regular weapons ... was it the one where you had to use the electrical switches? I think that was the first major boss, but I can't for the life of me remember what the 'trick' was to killing the end boss ...

So close, yet so far.

Unreal, banana peel!
It was Shub Niggurath, and you had to jump into the moving teleporter star (I have no idea how to describe this object accurately) at a certain place to spawn inside of her. She then exploded.
The lad you had to kill by running over switches was Chthon.

txa1265
March 27th, 2007, 20:06
I don't recall any of those names ... just running around like a crazy person trying to stay alive!

Jaz
March 27th, 2007, 20:14
Hey, I knew most levels in the original Quake by heart. Due to Sandy Petersen's Call of Cthulhu connections, many of the monsters in Q1 either were named after or resembled Lovecraftian entities.
Ia Ia, Cthulhu Ftaghn! (sp?)

The correct term is "telefrag", but we have a winner. Next question is yours Jaz.

Jaz
March 27th, 2007, 21:32
*groan* Yep, telefrag's the word :). Thanks!

Hmmm... okay, another easy shooter question: what did you have to do to exit a level in Xatrix's 'Redneck Rampage'? Please name action, item and involved parties (first names will suffice ;) ).

txa1265
March 27th, 2007, 21:44
Hehe ... now there is a name I can recall - whack Bubba upside the head!

Jaz
March 27th, 2007, 22:06
...with...?

txa1265
March 27th, 2007, 22:11
...with...?

Sorry, must have forgotten in my excitement over remembering the name ...

CROWBAR!

Jaz
March 27th, 2007, 22:34
Correct! Your turn :).

txa1265
March 27th, 2007, 22:41
In the original Jedi Knight game, who might you happen upon in Baron's Hed if you time things correctly?

Jaz
March 27th, 2007, 23:38
Do you mean Max from Sam and Max? I met him during my first time through the game, but never in any of my replays, no idea why.

PS: I have no idea if Sam was in the game, too - if he was, I never saw him.

txa1265

No Sam, just Max - I saw him on a replay randomly ... I knew the terrain then.

You're up ;)

Jaz
March 28th, 2007, 00:02
Hehe, okay... same genre, a few years earlier (or was it?): what was the name of the end boss in Rise of the Triad, and what did you have to do beat him in his first incarnation (human form)?

txa1265
March 28th, 2007, 00:48
Crap ... I still have RoTT, but don't think I ever finished it ... no clue from me :)

Jaz
March 28th, 2007, 06:55
You probably stopped playing at exactly THAT level... I nearly did.

Icefire
March 28th, 2007, 14:31
Crap ... I still have RoTT, but don't think I ever finished it ... no clue from me :)

Same here, still have it, but never finished it. No clue either.

Corrected ;) Just so you know ...

Icefire
March 28th, 2007, 16:38
Corrected ;) Just so you know ...

No offense Jaz. Just a figure of speech. I should probably take more notice of avatars.

Jaz
March 28th, 2007, 18:56
Oh, never mind the avatar. They aren't always indicators of a person's RL gender. For example, Wendy is my first female avatar in years!

Jaz
March 29th, 2007, 07:00
Hehe, okay... same genre, a few years earlier (or was it?): what was the name of the end boss in Rise of the Triad, and what did you have to do beat him in his first incarnation (human form)?
His name was El Oscuro. He started with a fixed amount of life energy, and when you hit him, the damage value of the hit was added to his energy supply. If he fired at you, the damage value of his shot was subtracted from his energy supply. As soon as Oscuro ran out of energy, he fled the level... so the only way to defeat him at this stage was to run from him, evading his shots.

Yeah, correct, Jaz!

Good, then it's my turn: different genre this time.
From the 'Lands of Lore' series: what is Scotia's real* name, and where/at which occasion does the player hear it for the first time?
'Scotia' is just the evil sorceress' nom de guerre...

Never played that game. No clue on that one.

Jaz

*scratch scratch*
Hmmm... okay...
From the 'Lands of Lore' series: what is Scotia's real* name, and where/at which occasion does the player hear it for the first time?
'Scotia' is just the evil sorceress' nom de guerre...Scotia's real name is Margarithe Fiston. This can be learned in the Draracle's Museum in Lands of Lore 2: Guardians of Destiny.

This one should be very easy: You all know Nintendo's plumber Mario. What is Mario's last name (and yes, it's canon... his last name was affirmed in a FAQ on one of Nintendo's official pages) ?

Corwin
March 30th, 2007, 09:16
Well, the answer is either Brother, and his name is Mario Brother, or it's obviously Mario, since if there's 2 and they are the Mario brothers, like the Marx brothers, then their last name must be Mario!! Simple!!!!

Jaz
March 30th, 2007, 18:10
What, an "either-or" reply?
Nevermind, your second guess was correct - Mario's last name is Mario! The Mario brothers are Mario Mario and Luigi Mario...

Your turn, Corwin! :glomp:

Jaz
April 1st, 2007, 10:06
Hello...? Corwin...?
Yoohoo, Corwin, where's your question!!!

Corwin
April 2nd, 2007, 04:38
OK,an easy one. Name the mistress of the King Lysandus of Daggerfall!!

Jaz
April 2nd, 2007, 06:50
*Phew* I was afraid you might pick a game I hadn't played - chances were good for this happening! Luckily Daggerfall is a game I played, and played often  : ... Medora.
I had to cheat to find her in Direnni Tower when I played DF for the last time two years ago - I got stuck in the water rooms and just didn't discover a way out...

Corwin
April 2nd, 2007, 07:27
Well, that didn't take long!! :)

Jaz
April 2nd, 2007, 20:14
So it's my turn again? Yippie :)!

Hmmmm.... I wrote down a collection of game trivia during a meeting last week... and left the sheet at work.

Which boss do you get to fight in Lands of Lore 3 AND the Command&Conquer: Tiberian Sun addon 'Firestorm'?

narpet
April 2nd, 2007, 20:33
You know... this contest isn't fair for those of us who have permanent long and short term memory loss... ;)

So far I have played and finished most of the games mentioned here, but my mind just won't serve up the answers... :S

And the sad part is, after reading the answers here, I won't remember them the next time somebody asks... ahhhh... senility.

This thread is a fun read for me though :)

Icefire
April 2nd, 2007, 21:50
Never played Lands but I played C&C. Cabal??

Kendrik
April 3rd, 2007, 01:38
Cabal ........ Damn too slow (Didn't see Icefire's answer) - of course I just realised both games were Westwood hence the swapping of names. I never really played LOL3 as number 2 put me off but I keep having this voice in my head saying give it a go. Bah I'll stick with replaying BG & BG2 for the time being

Jaz
April 3rd, 2007, 09:06
Yep, the AI named CABAL was a boss in both LoL3 and C&C. In hindsight, it gives a wholly new twist to the LoL enemies of part one - the Cabal warriors ;).
Your turn, Icefire!

@Kendrik: see, how different tastes can be :). BG and BG 2 are games I'd never touch again, broke off both roughly halfways through, while LoL3 is next on my list of replays...

Icefire
April 3rd, 2007, 16:19
OK. Let's get a little tougher.

What was the first PC game in history to come on 2 CD's?

Lucky Day
April 3rd, 2007, 17:01
hmm..its can't be Riven

Icefire
April 3rd, 2007, 17:08
Nope. Not Riven.

txa1265
April 3rd, 2007, 17:12
I'm thinking graphic rich adventure ... Myst was 1 CD, and Journeyman Project 2 was 3, but much later. So it must be '93 ... I dunno ...

dteowner
April 3rd, 2007, 17:25
My first thought was Phantasmagoria (which was actually 7), but that's way too late. Hmmm.

narpet
April 3rd, 2007, 17:33
Thinking of old adventure games... I remember The 7th Guest coming on 2 CDs, but I'm not sure if it was the first???

Lucky Day
April 3rd, 2007, 17:44
Either a deep graphic adventure or one of those early games that filled space with tons of movies in MPG format. Part of the reasoning back then was to make something too big for for floppies as CD burners weren't out yet.

txa1265

I remember discussions of some early 4x space games as particularly piggy in that regard ... but I'm clueless in that genre.

Moriendor
April 3rd, 2007, 19:27
OK. Let's get a little tougher.

What was the first PC game in history to come on 2 CD's?

Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon? :)

I think that one had even more than 2 CDs though like 3 or 4.... hmmm...

Jaz
April 3rd, 2007, 19:38
Creature Shock came on two CDs, but I doubt it was the first one.

txa1265
April 3rd, 2007, 19:46
This is a good question - we all have ideas but not the answer :) Heck, since my brain quit this one I tried googling and couldn't get it straight on a quick check!

Darn good question!

Icefire
April 3rd, 2007, 23:47
Thinking of old adventure games... I remember The 7th Guest coming on 2 CDs, but I'm not sure if it was the first???

We have a winner!! Yes, the 7th Guest was the first. It was also the first to be available only on CD.

Your turn narpet.

narpet
April 3rd, 2007, 23:55

Your turn narpet.

Wow... it's funny that the 7th Guest was the right answer. The only reason I remember it coming on two CDs was the fact that it's the only "non LucasArts" adventure game I've ever bought.

Okay... next question:

In the very first Gold Box game by SSI - The Pool of Radiance, one of the areas you have to visit is a graveyard. What is the name of that graveyard?

Jaz
April 4th, 2007, 14:06
I played it back then, but it never was a favorite game (<-- another way of saying that I have no clue ;) ).

txa1265
April 4th, 2007, 14:41
I played some of this on the AD&D collection a while ago in DOSBox, and I have it on the tip of my tongue but can't think of it exactly ... maybe it is because I'm excited for the upcoming PSP RPG 'Valhalla Knights' , but

'Valhalla'

sticks in my head, I know it is close but not right ... partial credit? ;)

Icefire
April 4th, 2007, 14:58
I thought it was Valhingen?

narpet
April 4th, 2007, 16:17

txa1265 - you were on the right track :)

The winner is Icefire with Valhingen... even got the spelling correct!

You're up...

txa1265
April 4th, 2007, 17:09
txa1265 - you were on the right track :)

At this point in life I'm happy to have it trigger a memory that is even nearly correct ;)

Icefire
April 4th, 2007, 19:11
In "RollerCoaster Tycoon" there was an "Arid Heights" scenario which had no financial restrictions. However there was a catch to it. What was the catch that would shut down your park if it happened?

Kendrik
April 6th, 2007, 23:09
Ah yes the classic sandbox mode except you shouldn't let your rating drop below 700 (although you did have a short time to sort it out before it's over). I loved the tycoon games

Icefire
April 6th, 2007, 23:31

Correct! Next question is yours Kendrik.

Kendrik
April 7th, 2007, 01:36
Ok then, what was the first (and I think only) game that allowed you to send a photograph of yourself to the company that made it and they would send you a disk back allowing that photo to be used as your ingame Character photo?
(Hint - This was before digital cameras)

narpet
April 7th, 2007, 08:31

Okay... I don't know if this is the game you're thinking of, but Legends of Valour allowed you to do that. I remember because I was really excited about that game when it came out. I actually got it for my brand new Amiga 4000 (yep... I was one of those). I wasn't really excited about the ability to add my picture into the game. I was excited because the game seemed so cool. And, even though it got pretty bad reviews at the time, I really enjoyed it.

Kendrik
April 7th, 2007, 14:00
Narpet, sorry not the game I was looking for - my game was released before Legends of Valour (although I have now been corrected that it was not the only game with this facility). Nice try though (and you did have the right computer system if that helps).

Lucky Day
April 8th, 2007, 17:26
Customized Games were a big trend for a while with children's titles. I remember Eek! the Cat playing one and the voiceover would change to something Monotone whenever his name was mentioned in the game. I think Lisa Simpson got one for her birthday too.

I will guess..the Journey game :D

Kendrik
April 9th, 2007, 15:01
No not The Journey (what could you customise in that - wasn't it a text based adventure with still images). Anywho - I've leave this one up until later today then I do a different one if nobody gets it.

Pladio
April 9th, 2007, 16:09
Nice thread. The only problem is that I came to the gaming environment much, much, much... later.

No not The Journey (what could you customise in that - wasn't it a text based adventure with still images). Anywho - I've leave this one up until later today then I do a different one if nobody gets it.

I gave up and googled it ... I have no clue about gaming on that system, but it was interesting to read. In general it is cool reading stuff that was done when gaming was *really* young ;)

Icefire
April 9th, 2007, 19:40
I vaguely remember some "detective" type game that did this I think. But I for the life of me can't remember the name.

Kendrik
April 10th, 2007, 00:17
Bah OK then the name of the game was Corporation (http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=1406) (have a look on Underdogs for info about the game - it was one of Core Designs first games). It was one of the original first person shooter type games and I think looked better then Doom as it was vector based as oppose to sprite based (although some of the baddies were sprites) a forgotten classic that could really scare you). It was released on the Amiga,ST and Megadrive.

OK then second question (I'll try to make it easier this time). What was the first game released on Laserdisc?

Icefire
April 10th, 2007, 00:51
Dragon's Lair.

Kendrik
April 10th, 2007, 17:33
Dragon's Lair.

Woot that was an easy one but well done Icefire - your go :)

Icefire
April 10th, 2007, 19:46
I've asked a lot of questions already. I will give someone else a turn. OK, narpet, you're up!

narpet
April 11th, 2007, 06:02
Okay... thanks Icefire.

In what sci-fi CRPG were you a member of the United Nations First Approach team, and your mission was to unravel the bizarre disapperance of the planet Earth?

Bonus points - what company made this game, and what is their big CRPG franchise?

narpet
April 12th, 2007, 15:52
Anyone... Anyone...

Jaz
April 12th, 2007, 18:10
I *know* that I know the name of the company and what other franchise they made, but I can't for the life of me remember the title of this game (isn't it ironic?), so - technically speaking - I can't reply.

For those who don't want to take part in the trivia game, here's the bonus point solution, anyway:
New World Computing, and Might&Magic. The game in question was about building a gadget that made Earth reappear. I remember playing it back at U, on one of the few PCs we had back then.

Corwin
April 13th, 2007, 00:41
The only space game I can remember from way back then, was Planet's Edge!!

narpet
April 13th, 2007, 06:12
The only space game I can remember from way back then, was Planet's Edge!!

We have a winner! Planet's Edge it was... and Jaz gets the extra credit for knowing it was developed by New World Computing... the makers of Might and Magic.

You're up Corwin...

Corwin
April 13th, 2007, 08:42
Skara Brae was a setting in at least three different games ( and numbers after the title don't count!! :) ) Name those 3!!

Skara Brae was a setting in at least three different games ( and numbers after the title don't count!! :) ) Name those 3!!

3?!?! I could only come up with two! (discounting numbers and extra words after the main title ... )

Corwin
April 13th, 2007, 12:30
Yeah, the 3rd one is tough!! :)

Icefire
April 13th, 2007, 16:56
Neverwinter nights, bard's tale and Ultima????

Corwin
April 14th, 2007, 07:49
I don't remember NWN, but the other 2 are correct. Can anyone else confirm NWN, as it wasn't the one I was thinking of!!

Icefire
April 15th, 2007, 03:25
It was just a guess for the third game. I don't think it was in NWN. No idea what the third game is. Good question!

Lucky Day
April 15th, 2007, 04:03
no, of course not NWN. That takes place in Faerun

Ask me this question 20 years ago and I could have told you Corwin. I bet there are more than 3 after the influence of Ultima.

I'll guess Questron.

Corwin
April 15th, 2007, 07:50
I agree, there's likely more than 3. I don't know Questron!!

Lucky Day
April 17th, 2007, 08:57
let's hear it Corwin..its been 2 days. (it wasn't Questron..but in checking I learned that they actually paid a license to Garriot for "look and feel").

Icefire
April 17th, 2007, 20:45
Corwin?.......Corwin?....... Bueller?.........Bueller?

Corwin
April 18th, 2007, 01:26
OK, new question. I'm not 100% sure my answer here is correct, but I think it is. What was the first RPG which allowed you to target specific body parts in combat and in which you could get specific parts of your characters bodies wounded which prevented them from being used. eg, if your left hand was wounded, you couldn't use it!!

Pladio
April 18th, 2007, 03:05
I am Fallout ?

Corwin
April 18th, 2007, 05:25
Not even close!! MUCH earlier!!

narpet
April 18th, 2007, 17:55
Man that's a tough question...

I remember that one (maybe more) of the Phantasie CRPGs gave you the ability to target specific body parts, but I can't remember if your characters body parts could be affected in the same way...

To make a guess I will say it was the last Phantasie... I think Phantasie III.

Jaz
April 18th, 2007, 19:01
Hmmm... Dungeon Master?

Icefire
April 18th, 2007, 19:26
I'm still waiting on the 3rd game from the first question Corwin!:anxious:

Lucky Day
April 18th, 2007, 22:19
I'm thinking of Battletech

yeah, Corwin..what was the third game?

roqua
April 19th, 2007, 01:11
I know, the corporation. Or some title like that. You were a cyborgish character that had to enter a future corporation and kill everyone. I still have the box.

I think. I can't think of any earlier game, but I missed a lot of the golden age games. I started playing pc rpg(ish) games with GfQ (or Hero's Quest), but had played a lot of them on the nes, like ultima and wiz1 (and of course dragon quest and console rpgs like that).

I had zork on my c128 if I get credit for that.

Corwin
April 19th, 2007, 02:31
Narpet got it with Phantasie 3!!

narpet
April 19th, 2007, 06:02
Okay... here's (what could be) an easy one...

Trebor and Werdna were prominent characters in what CRPG series, and where did those two names come from?

roqua
April 19th, 2007, 06:09
Wizardry, and probably from the devs names?

narpet
April 19th, 2007, 06:14
Wizardry, and probably from the devs names?

I'll give it to you... yes Wizardry of course... and the devs names backwards - Robert Woodhead (Trebor) and Andrew Greenberg (Werdna).

You're up Roqua...

roqua
April 19th, 2007, 06:18
All right, what phrase helped you become powerful in Quest for Glory 1?

Corwin
April 19th, 2007, 06:29
Was that getting work, cleaning out the stables?

roqua
April 19th, 2007, 06:43
No, that did help you improve stats, but this is more of a cheat, refering to something that sounds delicious.

roqua
April 19th, 2007, 14:11
Its a drink

roqua
April 20th, 2007, 03:50
24 hour rule. Its razzle dazzle root beer. You type that in chat and get 100 in all stats and skills, effectively becoming a rogue/mage/warrior not needing to sweep any longer.

New question, I thought the last one was easy, but I guess you guys weren't cheaters back in the day, or didn't care for quest for glory.

What method of protecting young player's from adult content did Leisure Suit Larry use?

Khass
April 20th, 2007, 06:51
Odd angles through which the more intimate areas were hidden?

I didn't actually play it, but I read about it in a LSL: Magna Cum Laudea review, that the guy who wrote it hated the new 'censored' bar, preferring the old method.

Jaz
April 20th, 2007, 07:05
The game asked a series of questions: some about history, some about TV, and so on. The questions weren't too difficult, and since they were multiple choice, you came a long way by just guessing, and I have no idea how they thought this would deter kids from playing.
I remember at least one of the questions: it was about a then-famous ad (but I forgot what that was for - some type of burger perhaps?). Anyway, there was this old lady who asked for the...? Right, beef.

LSL 1 was the only game we had on our computer at work back in '95 (it was an old computer with an amber monitor, and Larry was quite old by then).

roqua
April 20th, 2007, 13:25
Jaz got it, she's up.

Jaz
April 20th, 2007, 18:35
Okay... this is one for the FPS crowd: in Apogee's 1993 3D shooter 'Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold', Blake Stone's antagonist is the evil Dr. Goldfire. In the BS:AoG beta, the doctor's name was slightly different.
What was his original name, and why was it changed shortly before release?

txa1265
April 20th, 2007, 18:53
What was his original name, and why was it changed shortly before release?

OK, the final one was Goldfire, and it was changed due to concerns about the Jewish name. My memory says Goldstein, but I don't think I even have the little comic at home anymore to check ...

Khass
April 20th, 2007, 20:30
Sweet. That one of the first games I ever played. :)

Close enough. His original name was Goldstern (not Goldstein), and they did indeed change it because somebody complained about how 'Goldstern' portrayed Jewish people as evil.

Hehe ... the only reason I knew that was because I was such a fan of the original Wolfenstein from my Apple ][+ and ate up stuff on the Wolf 3D engine ;)

OK, here goes, a bit convoluted:
- Name the voice actor who added talent to the movie "Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders", as well as *the* primary character in the sequel to my favorite shooter of all-time (the 'original' which shared the same engine was released 3/28/02 and I recently completed a 5th anniversary run ... and the sequel was released about 1.5 years later); also a somewhat minor role in Baldur's Gate 2 and a very major role in a somewhat more recent RPG that shares the license with the aforementioned shooter.

Nope, sorry ... it is interesting that because I have young kids and was LTTP on BG2 that I heard the voice and thought "I know that voice from Scooby Doo!" (not one of the 'gang', BTW). This person voice-acted along-side Mark Hammill in that Scooby Movie.

The voice actor I'm thinking of played:
- Dynaheir in Baldur's Gate
- Fall from Grace in PS: T
- Mazzy in BG2
- Jaden Korr in Jedi Academy
- Bastila in KotOR

The answer is ... Jennifer Hale.

Her acting in Jedi Academy made the female character the only real choice.

Okey dokey, here goes...

A certain developer hit it big with action games that had a small peppering of RPG tropes. The games they had a hand in included Hexen and Heretic. (I'll leave out the developer's name to make it not so easy, but they teamed up with Id for the aforementioned two titles)

What was this developer's first game title (hint: it was an EoB/DM clone).

Bonus: what platforms was it developed for?

roqua
April 22nd, 2007, 14:00
So it was a first person party based-dungeon hack. I pretty sure I played them all, and the only ones that weren't part of a series and not made by ssi that I can think of is Lands of Lore, but that was bullfrog I think. I would say anvil of dawn since hexen was an fps, but you specifically said eob/dm clone and I think hexen came out before it. Legends of Valor didn't have a praty and is more of a UU clone. So I am going with Hex-Wizard Heresy or something like that since it seems to have the same naming scheme and fits the clone requirment.

Correct!
It was only released commercially for the Amiga, and many years later as a two-level demo for PC (by a third party/fan, I think?).

That was a great game! I remember playing it on the Amiga 500 when it first game out.Yeah, it is one of my all-time faves. Mainly due to fun and fond memories - it certainly is nothing original as far as gameplay goes. There is a heap of medium-size hits listed by Raven in the second link above; it's a pity that they never returned to "traditional" RPG matter and gravitated toward the all-out action route.
Also a pity that a complete PC version of Black Crypt was never made. I think it would have done well - it got some acclaim at the time on the Amiga.

Anyway...Jaz's turn!

fatBastard()

All 3 of you are correct but it was narpet who got the missing Menzoberranzen game as well.

Though I seemed to remember Drizzt showing up in both of the Baldur's Gate games, I was not entirely certain so I just said "at least 3".

In case anyone is wondering, Menzoberranzen was one of 3 games from the mid 90'ies built on the same engine (the others were 2 Ravenloft games: Strahd's Possession and Stone Prophet). In Menzoberranzen you got the chance to include Drizzt in your party for a while, including his cool Astral Panther Guenhwyvar.

In Demon Stone there was a castle defense level where you also got the chance to control Drizzt.

It took less than an hour to guess, so I guess it was indeed too easy

There was a CRPG from long ago that had a very different end game. Where most CRPGs require you to finish the game with a huge battle against the big bad guy, this CRPG ended without a fight. There was a big bad guy, but you had to imprison (actually re-imprison) him.

Clues - This was a fantasy CRPG. The main character was named Lukas (though you could rename him). The big bad guy's name was Dreax.

Alright: There was a SSI rpg that didn't use D&D, it was a single character game. In that game in order to progress you needed to bring a specific drink to someone. But, there was a problem with that causing the person needing the drink not to accept it, or recognize what you were saying. What was the drink and how did you get around the bug?

I forget the name of the game also, checking all the games SSI made I think its Prophecy of Shadow but I could only find one screen shot on underdogs so I'm only 98% or so.

The problem was that you had to give someone a bottle of white zinfandel. You had to type it in but it wouldn't take if you spelled it correctly, so you had to spell it wrong (as I probably did above).

Disclaimer: there is a small chance that you had to spell it right, but it was spelled wrong in the dialogue/quest log.

Mario of Mario brothers then? Did YOU really play this game!!??!! :)

Apparently you didn't :D. No one referred to the franchise as "Mario Brothers" until Super Mario Brothers came out on the NES. Luigi wasn't even around until the first Mario Brothers.

On a side note, what annoys me most in the States is that kids call him Mahr-ee-oh, the Spanish pronunciation, and not Mare-ee-oh the Italian pronunciation like we do in Canada.

Anyways, roqua, I had heard as a kid Donkey Kong meant "Stupid Ape" in Japanese. I'm not sure where Mario came from. I always thought that kids made it up and it spread by word of mouth as the the story was taken from the movie.

Let me add to this question roques. What is the name of girl that Mario is trying to save from Donkey Kong, only to later dump her for the Mushroom Princess?

roqua

New question: No one has really liked mine so I'll go for one that is educational that I also got from a history of video games show. Why was the sound card created specifically?

Well the first sound cards were created for the use of making music with a PC (not game music), but I believe that the first Sound Blaster card may have been made because of a push by Sierra On-Line (at the time a very big Adventure game company). Sierra wanted music in one of the King's Quest games (I think).

That's my guess.

txa1265
April 27th, 2007, 15:52
That is a bit of a tough question - there were 'sound cards' (i.e. integrated audio) on non-PC platforms capable of full FM synthesis and rudimentary sample playback before the first PC card (non-Creative, BTW) came in the late 80's. I had started a whole thing about it earlier this morning but abandoned it ... because I realized I have no idea what your actual question was ... is it about how the TRS80 had an external system that attempted to do what the Kurzweil and Emulator systems (and Fairlight as well, but I never used one of those) were doing in the late 70's / early 80's? Or the early attempts at integrating FM synthesis into computer systems for music-making? Or ...

roqua
April 27th, 2007, 21:59
I got my information from a telesion show on video games, so it has to be correct. Narpet had the gist of it, but it was the husband and wife team. From what the show said she would bug him to invent things so she could improve the king's quest games. First color, then a sound card for basic sounds.

Its just interesting that the biggest driver of new technolgy for computers was a wife bugging her husband so she could make better games.

Of course, other people pointed out there were other sound-card like things before sound cards, but were they for pc's? I don't know, you'll have to take that up with the show because if its true, they didn't tell me. But everyone knows everything on TV is always true, so I guess I'm at a crossraods.

The company, was of course Sierra and the game from what I remember was King's Quest, so Narpet is up.

April 27th, 2007, 22:11
Of course, other people pointed out there were other sound-card like things before sound cards, but were they for pc's?
No - it was TRS80, then Amiga and Apple. All pre-PC. But the first PC card was two years before Creative entered the game.

C'mon Narpet!

narpet
April 27th, 2007, 22:28
Okay...

Like Roqua mentioned, Sierra On-Line was originally started by a husband and wife team. It was first called simply On-Line Systems and then they added Sierra to the name and dropped the Systems. To this day Sierra is still in existence and responsible for some big games, though it is no longer owned by the husband and wife team.

Question - What are the names of that husband and wife team? Remember... no cheating (I'm sure this one's extremely easy to look up on the net).

Trivia Fact: One of their first games (under the company name of On-Line Systems) was call Softporn adventure. It was a pure text adventure. It was later remade as a graphical adventure and called... Liesure Suit Larry.

just for discussion...

The TI 99/4a had a popular Speech Synthesizer and the Intellivision had a Music Synthesizer that came with a keyboard. Unfortunately, the only thing you could use with it was the cartridge it came with. Apparently, B52 bomber had some more speech in it but Mattel had them remove it so they could sell more synthesizers. I believe the Intellivision Lives crew readded it back in.

Ultima III and IV sold a lot of Mockingboards. Of course, Atari and the C64 had their systems built in.

I have to disagree with you on SSI. They made tedious junk! Of course, they were mainly into crunching numbers and converting hexagonal military strategy games that used a lot of dice rather than bells and whistles. I've said this before, but I'm compulsed to set the record straight with them everytime I hear about it.

OK, I was waiting a bit hoping people were just away for the weekend and they'd come back and try and answer. But clearly no one else has played the game.

Neuromancer, just like the book, in a word, ROCKS! Its sucky in the graphics department but this is an RPG sight and like any great RPG what's amazing about it is its depth. Its not just the puzzle solving, in many cases you have to figure out just what the puzzle is. And as you progress you learn what the story is. (I'm not sure but I believe an Amiga version doesn't suck graphically if it's truly out there. don't quote me on that)

Its not a clone of the book, it is its own story giving homage to Gibson's new invention to the genre.

This is cyberpunk in its original form. Its pre-Matrix and cyberpunk was fresh and new and William Gibson hadn't yet started rehashing his same story. Its roots are in the cynical Punk Rock Sci-Fi of the early 80's.

There was quite a bit of talk about System Shock by Corwin and others recently and Neuromancer (the game) was definitely an inspiration for it.

Its such a cool ending I don't want to spoil it for anyone. I'd rather you play the game.

http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=761

But if you truly insist you die

honestly, play the game. for example: a quick way to scrum up some cash is to sell your own bodyparts.

New question then. Coleco ported Donkey Kong for multiple systems such as the Atari 2600 and Intellivision leaving out some important features (like a third level) . Many people saw this as a bizarre way to disparage the competition by making their own product look bad on a competitors machine. This way you'll want their "much better" machine.

What did you need to purchase for the Colecovision in order to play the "Pie Factory" in Donkey Kong?

JDR13
April 30th, 2007, 09:06
IIRC wasn't there 2 versions of Donkey Kong for the Coleco? The regular version didn't have the "Pie Factory" level, but wasn't there some sort of 'deluxe' version that did have it?

Also, there were 4 levels(at least in the arcade version), not 3.

I played the Amiga version when it came out so many years ago. At the time the graphics were better than some other versions. But obviously by today's standards they are prehistoric.

It was a great game. I loved being able to sell your body parts for cash (getting cheap replacements).

I'm stumped on the Donkey Kong question.

There was an expansion module that enabled you to play that level and all Atari games on it, but I am not sure if there was a specific name for it.

I may be wrong but I thought you needed to buy the optional keyboard to get the Pie Factory. This was during the mass exodus of Consoles to PC's and we never thought we'd see Console gaming again because they were limited and lacked any ral function.

JDR I and my pocketbook are aware there are 4 levels in Donkey Kong. The Atari 2600 version Coleco made did not have a 3rd level.

A quick search tells me I'm wrong. JDR and Icefire got it. There's a "Super" version. There was quite some legal sheninagans going on about the Console port of the game. Either way Coleco made $500 million that year.

Ok, here's one.

In "Baldur's Gate" in the town of Nashkel there exist possibly the most annoying NPC ever inserted into a crpg. Once he see's your party he will follow you everywhere on that map and ask an extremely long series of moronic questions. It's actually a test to see if you'll kill him or not. If you can put up with him long enough you're rewarded with an experience bonus.

Without looking it up, what was that npc's name?

Lol, who could forget? I figured that one would be answered quickly.

Hmmmm... I know what the copy protection was. Most people thought it was pretty annoying, but I actually liked it. But, I don't know how you could get around it in DOS... so I'll have to stay quiet.

I'm interested to hear the workaround... I actually still play POR every year or so, and to this day I still use the copy protection.

In Curse of the Azure Bonds, more than halfway through the game I was suddenly asked to answer something out of the manual before crossing a bridge or entering the door.

This was the deepest paper Copy Protection I'd ever run into and it dawned on me that crackers didn't bother playtesting a game all the way through.

This was in the days that jsut getting cheat codes was pretty hard. You tended to have to find someone's borrowed floppy who just got into town or pay long distance to roam bulletin boards.

OK, Question:

Okay... I don't know the "extra credit" part, but the copy protection in the original PoR was a code wheel. There were different "languages" on it. The game would ask you to check the proper language and then decode the word written in that language. So you had to line the wheel up correctly and then read the symbols to get the word in english.

I actually remember off the top of my head (which is pretty sad and twisted) that one of the languages was called Dethek, though I can't remember if that was an Elven or a Dwarven language (it was definitely one of the two).

Sorry it took me so long to post a new question...

What long-running CRPG series has included a map (sometimes cloth, sometimes paper) with every single game in the series. In other words you would find a map in the box of every game in this venerable CRPG series.

**Hint - it's not Ultima - proof here (http://www.mobygames.com/game/ultima) that the first ultima did not include a map (click on and read the trivia section)**

I think Bard's Tale always had some Skara Brae map. Are my answers getting repetitive?

Since I haven't bought the new I can't say that for sure. And the question is would Dragon Wars or the BT Construction set be included as part of the series? Assuming that answer is correct.

Bard's Tale wasn't exactely a long-running series... my own guess is Might & Magic... but to be honest it's really just a wild guess. I know the old Might & Magics all had a map, but I'm not sure if the new ones had, since I didn't play them.

If you consider the new (one) you could say its a long running series. Longer than M&M in fact. However, as I said I hadn't bought the new (one) so I don't know if it had a map.

But won't quibble..this isn't for money. Is it?

If we count the new one (which I doubt that some would since it's more of a parody than a sequel) then it would be the wrong answer because the newest game didn't come with a map.

If this were for money I'd be cheating like crazy ;)

Hehe... guess that's ok. It was in fact a sixth toe (after all you have 5 toes on each foot... please Corwin tell me you have!). But yep, you picked it up by walking through the radioactive goo in the tocix caves with naked feet.
You could later on amputate the toe and carry it around with you. Rumor is that you could use it in the end-fight... but I've never tried, so I can tell you what happens.

I think there has to be at least some attempt before I need to create a new question; this is NOT difficult!!

I only got the 'M&M Millenium Edition' a year or two ago - so 4 & 5 were there and could be 'combined' into one. But I never got that far. What I was warned at the time was that as I left a mine in Vertigo I would be asked a question that would reference some page in the manual - but that the manual pages were all screwed up due to being combined into a single manual. I would have to go to a password file in the manual directory that was created on the disk.

OK, I give in. You begin to rebuild a castle, which you then get to use. At a point part way through the re-building process, you get a copy check which keeps you out of the castle unless you past it. To get around that, you simply cast LB earlier in the game.

Sticking with M&M, what's the 'big secret' you discover late in the very first game, which actually carries over into later games?
