The latest developer journal (http://www.tcos.com/sbforum/viewtopic.php?t=11099) to hit the official Chronicles of Spellborn site takes a look at factions.
It's pretty nifty to roll up a new player character, take your first steps upon some unknown Shard, learn how to point your bow in the general direction of (preferably) an opponent and actually hit him with an arrow. In fact, it can be pretty mesmerizing. Maybe even more so, if you do it again and again, with a sword or spell. But it's all kind of useless if you're just shaving off life force of some random bloke, who happened to be within the range of your weaponry. Imagining him to be a part of some smuggler's organization, which was peddling illegal wares into town, now that's already a bit more enticing.

To prevent you, the player, from getting tired thinking up all these kind of jobs and associations with other characters, and then having to decide how they should react to your advances (or stray arrows), we have factions. This is basically just a fancy way of saying that there are multiple character-groups within the game, each with their own history and associated goals. Some of these factions are friendly, but others are hostile enough to reward those stray arrows you expelled with a blunt object to your cranium.

They are STILL developing SB? Geez, I wonder if it EVER comes out. All I have seen it s crude gameplay idea (you cant grind levels just by killing) uber ugly character models and a world that breaks the record of showing more different tones of brown and grey than we have ever seen! Huzzah! Nah, I think I'll pass on this.

Because it is a MMO I hope they do something to differentiate it - look at all of the others that have died or nearly died recently. Vanguard? Auto Assault?
