View Full Version : Calling for screenshots

So, we have PictureWatch working on the front page but we don't have six/seven years of collected screenshot history, like we did somewhere else.
I'd like your help bringing PictureWatch up to full glory.
I'm looking for CRPG screens to upload to our server for posterity and to make the front page look pretty. ;)
The fine print:
Must be your *own* screens - nothing ripped from another site (because of copyright issues)
Particularly interested in classic and/or unusual stuff but anything from our database (http://www.rpgwatch.com/show/games/) that could do with more screens is fair game. Got some Baldur's Gate screens? Ultima VII? Might & Magic VI? Gothic?
jpg and modest size preferred (200-400k each screen is probably ideal)
If you have anything to offer, please post here so we don't triple up on the same thing and because I'll get drowned in work if you just PM or email them over.
Again, your own screens that you made only.
Thanks for any help! :)

Nice idea. I'll be sure to make some when I'm back at my own PC in two weeks or so.
For older games, do you prefer them in their original resolution or interpolated and aspect ratio corrected? I assume the latter, as 320x200 seems totally skewed and tiny. ;)

Not going for PNG? It can usually be compressed decently enough, depending on the actual screenshot, and well, it's lossless. ;)

Do any of you have recommendations for a free and easy program I could use to make screenshots? I don't like the 'Print Screen' paste in Paint method, I'd prefer a more automatic method if possible.

That is because Myrthos has corrected it. The problem was that the images wouldn't appear as they do now (like this (http://www.rpgwatch.com/show/images?ref=0&id=287)). Though you could circumvent this through clicking on the "image not available" picture and then the large image would appear (like this (http://www.rpgwatch.com/show/imageview?ref=0&id=287&index=0)).

I guess I was wondering what the issue was for the sake of information - it is sort of like how I get frustrated when people post questions like "Help I'm stuck at X" then follow-up with "Never mind, figured it out" without ever sharing the wealth.

You don't have to apologise/explain. I know what you mean. Especially if you've been having a problem and then searched for it on the internet only to find someone asking the same question but not replying about the solution when they've figured it out by themselves. And you're still left with your problem.

So if you hover over the "Games" option on the top menu and click any of the applicable options (Games Search, Developer Search...), what happens?
Vampire pics are welcome.
As for the other issues, I think it's because some of the screens are not jpg - not sure if I just missed them or didn't do my batch conversion properly. I don't expect contributors to convert all their screens (and thanks to everyone regardless of format) but if you have the option/capability to provide .jpg only, that would be appreciated.

I use IrfanView's batch conversion almost daily, so that's cool...I either forgot or didn't click the correct option - but shortage of time to do stuff *is* an issue. Myrthos has updated a bunch of things since the "early" days, so it may not even be relevant but one format sort of keeps things neat, anyway.

I'm willing to contribute some time toward creating screenshots on a regular basis, say, for a matter of a few weeks (I just finished up a contract at work, so I really don't have anything else to do). I own a rather extensive games library, comprised primarily of new titles (post 2000)...however, while I don't feel that crediting them in any manner is truly necessary (as per VPeric's suggestion) I would like to ask if a comprehensive list could be provided of those games which require screens. It would aid in preventing myself - and others - from wasting our time in creating pointless screen-captures. I mean, saying "we want everything!" is fine, but it doesn't let us know for which titles you have already received screens from another member, which have a database of screens you are already content with and which, if any, you already have committed members working on.
In any case, I'll work on submitting some soon, though I do hope you take my words under consideration.
Best of luck...
Postscript:
Let me see if I have this correct...
1. Images should be in jpeg format
2. Images can be uploaded to a third-party server or sent in batches to an administrator via email
3. Images should be no larger than 400kb
If so, may I inquire as to the following...
1. Is there any specific manner in which you would prefer the image title be formatted (for instance, name-of-game_screenshot#)?
2. Are there any watermarks you would like applied to the image (a RPGWatch logo, for instance)?

Unfortunately I lost a lot of screenshots of many games in a hard disc crash some months ago but I found a folder with MotB screenshots (http://rapidshare.de/files/38837209/MotB.rar.html). My old comp can run NWN 2 only on low settings so they don't show it's full glory but better then nothing until you got better ones, I guess.

Sorry for the slow response to some of these and thanks to Asbjoern for jumping in and uploading some.
@purpleblob - thanks, uploaded.
@Amasius - thanks, the MotB screens are uploaded.
@themadhatter,
1. Any common graphics format should be fine. I did write jpg only at the beginning of the thread but that was outdated.
2. Yep, any reasonable manner of getting them to us.
3. 400k isn't a hard rule but it's probably a fair guideline. If you have a screen that really needs a hi-res to do it justice, go for it within reason.
4. Don't really care about formatting except no spaces, weird characters and we have some restrictions like no m_ (and a couple of others) at the beginning of a filename. Probably easiest to just not have _ in the first few characters.
5. Our uploader watermarks automatically.
As for what games, why not have a wander through our database?
http://www.rpgwatch.com/show/games
Games with screens have an "Image" link on the far right. Games with no (or few) screens would be nice but all are welcome.

Hm, you have added the screens in the database to NWN 2 and not to the expansion; was that intentional?

Here's my first contribution: Bioshock.
http://www.mediafire.com/?abmsjm1zzo3
I just did a marathon run over the night (roughly four hours, not counting my rather frequent breaks) and took some shots of whatever caught my eye. For the most part, they're non-combat oriented (scenery and the like), as you'll see for yourself. Thirty pictures in all, png file-format, with an average filesize of roughly 400kb (I do apologize for the fact that some - three, I believe - approached the 500kb range). Lastly, you'll have to disregard some of the resolution changes. For some reason Fraps shifted from saving the screenshots in the resolution I was playing at (1280x1024) to a smaller one (1024x768).
Lastly, I quickly skimmed through the database and came up with a list of titles I can submit screen-caps for, as follows...
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscure
Arx Fatalis
Avencast: Rise of the Mage
Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn
Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal
Beyond Divinity
Deus Ex
Diablo
Dungeon Siege 2
Freelancer
Gothic 2
Hellgate London
Kult: Heretic Kingdoms
Loki
Mage Knight Apocalypse
Overlord
Space Hack
...if anyone else is presently working on acquiring screenshots for the aforementioned titles, kindly leave a reply denoting such.
PostScript:
I used Mediafire only as they provide a stable upload rate (where I'm concerned), a good, free hosting service and no wait-times. If you'd prefer I upload any further images I might submit elsewhere, kindly note such.
Thanks...

Wow...thanks, magerette, I appreciate that.
Of course, I can hardly take any credit. The developers of Bioshock certainly didn't skimp when it came to loading the game with eye-candy, thus making it a veritable hoard for screenshotters with the ToggleHUD/Fly command and a decent computer at their disposal.
So, speaking of eye-candy, here's some of the best I could come up with from Deus Ex (same as last time, png format, roughly 400kb each, some post-snap color correction work done in Photoshop to amend gamma discrepancies, uploaded to MediaFire)...
http://www.mediafire.com/?jzjdysnevwy
...I haven't played the game since it was first released and was almost overwhelmed by the sheer gameplay options presented. To be quite frank, I'm entirely disappointed with Bioshock now. Having finished a marathon run of each (that is, playing as quickly as I could, exploring each area thoroughly and never cheating/exploiting the game mechanics) I finished Bioshock in a matter of four or five hours, whereas Deus Ex took almost eleven! Sure, the story is a little far-fetched, as any fan of the game must admit, with all the conspiracies of the world bundled into one little package, yet it's compelling just the same...
For the sake of brevity I'll stop spewing praise for a title which I'd all but forgotten and move on with snapping pictures from another. Next up is Freelancer.

No problem, asbjoern, if nothing else it gives me an excuse to play some games.
Now, for some Freelancer screenshots. Same routine as before, save that you'll have more to pick and choose from (66 in this batch)...
http://www.mediafire.com/?cxsjxy9ktxt
...I do, however, have just one little inquiry to make: Why is this title in the RPGWatch games database? Is it a staff favorite? Something that was voted on? I'm curious as, having just completed my marathon play-session, I didn't find a single element of the gameplay which might be described as "rpg'ish" or the like. In truth, it's little more than your average space/fighter-sim, much like DarkStar One, Tarr Chronicles or Freespace. No choices and consequences, no skills, no character customization or growth...nothing.
Just my observation. Enjoy, mates.

It's a carry-over from RPGDot. Again, there was much discussion (and much reader interest) and it was decided at the time to cover it. Looking back, it's not RPG-y at all but we did have a decent community of Dotters playing it and we're always flexible on coverage.

Thanks for explaining, Dhruin. As I said, I was just curious...and yeah, I have to agree with Jabberwocky, it's a great game for what it is (although there are some annoying aspects, namely the "you can still get hit while docking, although you're unable to control your ship during said time" procedure...I must have died ten times or more for that very same reason).
Oh, and thanks for finding something you liked, Asbjoern. I was a little dubious about some of the pics, which is why I supplied so many.
On a sidenote, someone else will have to play through Diablo if you guys want any screenies. I attempted it, honestly, but just couldn't find the motivation. Between the monotonous clickety-click-click gameplay that never seemed to have any result (I mean, how many times do I have to click a skeleton before it dies and what was wrong with my first click?), the fixed resolution that looked atrocious on my screen (and I have an LCD which is quite scalable) and the sheer lack of any "nostalgia" I was counting on to get me through, I just couldn't manage to make it past level three of the labyrinth. Sorry, gents.
Next up, a game I'm certain I should be able to play: Gothic 2.

Can't blame you at all there--I loaded it up back when Iwas getting rid of my Win98 computer for nostalgia and it was unplayable for me--a strange mix of too easy and too hard and as you say terrible grainy graphics that hurt your eyeballs--and I was very fond of the game back in the day. Sometimes you just can't go back. :) I don't think screens from Diablo will be greatly missed, except maybe as artifacts of a bygone era. ;)

Sometimes you just can't go back. I don't think screens from Diablo will be greatly missed, except maybe as artifacts of a bygone era.
You're probably right. I doubt anyone new to gaming is likely to harbor a desire to play the game, while most of us "veterans" have likely done so already...that is, if we were ever even interested. Still, I had to try.
Now, after a considerable delay, I'm back with some more screenshots. This time it's a selection of seventy-one from which to choose, taken from Dungeon Siege 2 with Fraps, some minor gamma/color correction in Photoshop, png file-format and, as usual, uploaded to MediaFire...
http://www.mediafire.com/?2cxupb3h64j
...I really don't know what I'll be snapping from next. If anyone can lend a hand with running Gothic 2 on Vista I'd appreciate you dropping a reply in my thread on such (here (http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?p=72836)), as until then it's off my "to take pictures from" list. I've also had to remove Arx Fatalis (to my dismay, being one of my all-time favorite games), which absolutely refuses to operate properly on a 64-bit OS, and Dungeon Siege, which is not supported on Vista (x86 or x64). I presently have Hellgate: London, Kult: Heretic Kingdoms, Space Hack and Overlord on-hand. I suppose it'll have to be one of them.
Until then, enjoy and best of luck...

Okay, next batch of screenshots are finished. Taken from Overlord at the highest possible settings, color-correction on only one image in Photoshop, median size of roughly 500kb (my apologies about that, but the palette for Overlord is quite large and the game uses a high-saturation technique for a cartoony-look ala Fable), png file-format and MediaFire upload. This time you hae eighty-one images from which to choose...
http://www.mediafire.com/?lillzjy1ymd
...just on a little aside here, this is the first time I've ever completed the game. To be honest, I can't say that I really care for it. The seemingly-mandatory "twist" ending rather ruined the entire game, in my opinion, while the childish approach to "evil" was somewhat overdone. Still, the visual style is engaging, the voice actors (at least for the minions) did a phenomenal job and the game does lead with a unique premise.
Hellgate: London is up next.

Hellgate: London screenshots (usual format, usual affair)...
http://www.mediafire.com/?om5uibm01to
...by far my smallest contribution to date (a mere eleven screens from which to select something appropriate), I was forced to stop playing and uninstall HG:L shortly after completing my nth (n being some absurdly large number) fetch quest (every quest in the game is one, it's like a single-player multi-player game, which is every bit as annoying as it sounds) and encountering my fifth "Memory Exhausted" error. I do hope you'll understand my frustration with a game whose engine is so un-optimized that it will take in excess of a minute to load a single level whose breadth may be traversed in less than twelve seconds (yes, I counted), then slam you with some gibberish about exhausting your memory...when you have six gigabytes with which to work (four physical, two VRAM and even two on a flashdrive, which means the OS - with Readyboost - loads itself on there when playing a game, sparing the physical from being used)!
In short, expect no more HG:L screens from me. I'm moving on to something else.

Alright, mates, here's some more. This time you have twenty images from Space Hack to choose from. You'll have to excuse the small selection as, quite frankly, SH is one of the worst RPGs I've ever played. Useless skills (all four of them), derivative Diablo-esque gameplay (although it lacks any real enjoyment-factor), minimal selection of weaponry, poorly scripted plot (both concept and grammar) coupled with graphics that were dated even at its release. I simply couldn't force myself to play any longer than the two-thirds of the game I plowed through.
Two-thirds and only twenty pics, you say? Well, to be honest, there just aren't that many "screenshot worthy" areas in Space Hack. The locales are all fit together from the same basic tiles and the monsters are (for the most part) simple palette-swapped creatures. Blah.

It's funny, because the first time I played it (when it originally came out) I had fun, but not as much fun as I'm having now. I'll make more screens in this and other RPG games when I'll be playing them.

Lots of screens, and I see you've already got Fallout in your database, but just pick and choose those you want :).
BTW, why do you have Keepsake in the game database? It's a point and click adventure game, and doesn't even pretend to be an RPG...

Agree. The voiceacting was horrible, but the story made me so excited that I played the whole game in one sitting...

I played Keepsake, too. And I enjoyed it very much, the voiceacting in my version was good, imho, the only difficulty was all that running around.
I think I should play it to the end, because last year the breakdown of my old PC interrupted it.

Edit : Oh crap, there's already a bunch of Two Worlds screenshots in the database... :/
I have a few screens from King's Quest 8 and Drakan but these games are not in the database. Are they not RPG enough ?

We add older RPGs to the database whenever there is something we have about these games, be it an article, newsbit or screenshots.
That's why several games are not in the database.
That said I don't recall KQ8 being much of an RPG, but I might be mistaken as it has been a while I've played it.
Edit: WoW and Two World screenshots added

Hmmm, you're right. These two games ( KQ8 and Drakan ) are more Action+Adventure games. ( No true inventory and no character choice nor progression beside finding better weapons ).

I was thinking about taking a DOSBox session with some oldies (screenshotting). Question is, should I use DOSBox graphic filtering or should I avoid that?

Why not both for a short time? ;) A few comparison shots could be interesting, even if they only show roughly the same area.

I don't see a difference. :/
Changed them to links as it makes them more justice. I actually believe that modern browsers do some scaling and if you are running a high resolution on your monitor it will be difficult to see, but there is a huge difference. Also, the hq3x and x3 version above was shrinked because of RPGWatch.

Are you sure they are from Ultima 9???
lanael
October 31st, 2008, 23:32
Absolutely.
But they were taken using the first person view and at the beginning of the game (the house of the avatar and the park around ) which is also the tutorial part. Also, at the top of the pictures there is a debug/info line and the UI is hidden.
So, they are not showing typical gameplay.
