View Full Version : Assassin’s Creed = Thief series?

It had been several years since i have chance to slinking about doing up to no good you-know-what things in Thief 3; now it seems we got a nice thief-like game in the name of Assassin's Creed. I never paid much attention to this one and seem like just another console game (PC version delayed to early next year). From the First review (http://www.gameinformer.com/Games/Review/200712/R07.1106.0938.00452.htm) it looks outstanding with great storyline, gameplay and lengthly in the days when most good games are short.

Taking a life is not a task to be accepted lightly. While some games trivialize the act, none infuse it with haunting gravity more elegantly than Assassin’s Creed. As you guide Altaïr through his missions, the game transforms you into an angel of death; the puppeteering control scheme and cinematic camera makes every kill feel significant, and every leap of faith a triumph. The gameplay can instantly transform from careful, measured movement to a heart-pounding escape with a dozen city guards on your trail. The chase is enhanced by the seamless integration of free-running, which has you traversing towering spires and residential districts in exhilarating ways you have to see to believe.

I saw this on TV of all things and that's the first thing I thought: Thief clone. But its a console game.

In the words of "Charles" at Qt3 (http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showthread.php?t=39753&page=2), the project leader for the game:

Action is a choice, for the most part. It's a rare time when you are forced to fight. Maybe two or three times in the game.

That being said, it's no Thief, thank Jeebus. If you like fighting, there's plenty to do without getting frustrated (although there's plenty of You Are Going To Get Your Ass Kicked fights if you aren't smart about it).

And it's not a stealth game either. At least, not in the way that the terms are commonly used. You hide in plain sight, and there's no real 'failure' for triggering conflict. There are some missions where it's expected that you don't trigger an all out fight.

Pardon this old taffer if I cringe at considering a murder sim equivalent to Thief -- especially one where you can't hide in shadows. Real thieves use stealth and their exceptional BJ techniques to deal with guards.

Well, Thief was all about the gameplay, really. The stories were good, but the game was really about the small details of thievery more than exploring a story or charging towards an end goal. I get the impression that Assassin's Creed is more about exploring the story and getting results, so it seems they've removed some of the "micromanagement" details to make it, well, easier and less time-consuming to accomplish a mission than it was in the Thief games.

That's one technique I suppose...... Though my Thief games didn't have that option.

Yes it was. The black jack was the first weapon you picked up in the tutorial level of the first game -- and you started with it automatically in the two sequels (although in T2X you had a most painful-looking hammer instead).

I believe Gallifrey was insinuating something else... ;)

the reasons i'm looking forward to this game actually have little to do with the gameplay. jesper kyd who does all the io games is doing the music, and melissa kaplan's superb voice talents are in many of those tracks. also kristen bell (ashame i didn't start watching veronica mars 'til the 3rd season and then it gets dropped-only show i've cared about in years) is doing the voice for a main character. so even if the game sucks i will be buying it for the audio content alone when it comes out for the pc early next year.

by the way jaz your new avatar scares the shit out of me unlike all your prior ones. it seems like it wants my soul. is it from jade empire?

No. It's the drum machine/stage from the opening sequence (http://it.youtube.com/watch?v=w_b6_y56R9U) of FFX-2. And it wants your soul.

And Assassin's Creed does sound interesting if it can reproduce the Thief atmosphere.

game trailers has some good video's in HD if you want to see it in action. Very smooth, and the producer, Jade somethinerother, pretty cute, how'd that happen?

i'm not sure what this game will share with thief, other than maybe a graphic style. that's not a problem though as their really haven't been any "great" new action adventure franchises in years which i think this game may be more akin to. never played any of the modern prince of persias besides the demos but maybe this game will be a hybrid of that an thief(at least maybe the third one). there's very few games in the action adventure genre that don't trade unique and immersive settings for a cartoony and "wow that looks cool" look but this game from what i've seen at least has an attempt at trying to go for a realistic setting.

There's more HD and non-HD footages from Gametrailers. The E3 footage (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/10406.html) shows a glimpses of gameplays and missions that you would get; while the Ubidays 07 (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/1986.html) showing the fighting, skulking about (woof!, woof!!, woffwoffwooo!!!...lol) and fleeting in a MTV style trailer!.

AC was released on consoles, and I found two cool fan gameplay videos. Looks amazing and really fun. I love the whole huge-playground idea, and being able to go anywhere.

Have you heard that IGN changed their review of AC PS3 after publishing it?

Wow. I'd call that a big red flag. You have to wonder if IGN responded to a threat. It wouldn't be the first time a little legal muscle changed a reviewer's opinion.

Come to think of it, I thought the frame rate looked a little low, even on the TV commercial. Hmmmmmmm.

I've read a dissapointing review about it. Apparently, it's great fun and all - the first mission. The other eight are just more of the same. It's a magazine I trust a lot, so it's cooled me off quite a bit from this game.

But hey, they could be wrong (hopefuly, since I'm itching for a Thief-like game)!

Remus

Yeah i thought it would be another instant classic like Deus Ex, Halo, or the Thief games. General consensus (reviews) put the game at 82%, still it's not bad as The Witcher also in that range, together with UT3. Hellgate London only get 70% rating which shows moderate/mediocre acceptance...

I must inform you that Assassins Creed's producer said its inspired from Prince of Persia: Sand of time(freeware now).

I wish that people would quit making a big deal about Jade Raymond's appearance. It's gotten to the point that a decent looking woman takes part in the production of a game, and she's not allowed to show her face in public, or it's blathered everywhere that she's just some pretty face being whored out to sell a game.

I'm not saying that Remus or anyone in this thread is saying such things, she is indeed an attractive woman, but do a search on her name and you'll see the utterly assinine, juvenile things that are being said about her. It bothers me, this woman is not allowed to show her face without being derided for being pretty. How dare she!

Might as well just toss a burkha on her for crissake

Some gaming sites totally gone wild several weeks back with fury discussion about something by some poster on SomethingAwful Forums; and as the name of the site suggested - that forum usually have considerable amount of awful threads... When i came to the said thread Ubi Soft already threatenning to sue someone... Not sure what's the outcome as i never check again. Just another day life on the internet. I bet now most already forgotten about it.

Ease up, Altair. There's a thin line between "obnoxious" and "troll" and this sort of post seems to be par for the course with you. We generally tolerate the former and smack around the latter, so you might want to watch that line a little closer in the future.

Well, I just finished Assassin's Creed last night and I really enjoyed it immensely. It looks spectacular, has some really smooth controls (once you get used to the climbing mechanics), excellent fight mechanics and a rather interesting integration between the real world and the gaming world.

The game is packed with opportunities for both casual and power gamers alike and every assassination situation has more than one approach.

Of course it IS an action game so even though you CAN assassinate most of your main targets like lightning from a clear sky, there is plenty of swordfights involved and in these fights it is evident that the Prince of Persia games was used for inspiration. As you progress in the game you unlock more fighting techniques and weapons and the fighting mechanics are fluid and gruesome and filled with bone crunching, screaming and blood spatter, all shown in impressive motion captured animation.
