I can recommend Tibia (http://www.tibia.org/). It suffers a bit from scammers and so on, but the gameplay is excellent. There's a newbie isle that's already lots of fun, later on you can buy houses. I made many great memories in that game, some of which were quite thrilling, a feeling I've never had in WoW so far.

Tibia is basically free, with the option of a premium account if you really like it. You get some bonuses then, but nothing major. Just try it out. And I'd choose a Non-PvP server. ;)

Has anyone played Dofus (http://eng.dofus.com/)? I remember when it was released there was a bit of a flurry of news around the launch, but I've not heard anything about it since.
