GameSpy's periodic indie column Download This! (http://au.pc.gamespy.com/articles/743/743216p2.html) includes Spiderweb's Avernum 4 this time around:
Avernum 4 is the perfect game if you're sick of all these newfangled, first-person RPGs and long for something that will remind you of the Ultima series in its heyday.

WooHoo! Glad to see it getting more press - I love this game, spend *tons* of hours in the beta and later in the full game ... and even got my kids into playing it for a while.

Avernum (Exile) & Geneforge - both series are great !

Can you hop into these games with the current iteration(Avernum 4) or is it best to start out with the first?

You can definitely start with 4. Obviously you'll miss some of the backstory but my partner has only played AV4 and she loved it.

Thanks. I've been reading about Spiderweb for years, but used to have only dial-up so downloading was questionable. Now that I'm i the "fast lane" I will give it a try.

Hehe ... downloading those games was definitely dial-up friendly ... whereas some game demos these days (Dark Messiah) is *broadband* unfriendly!

Yeah, ironically Jeff always aimed the file size at the dial-up community. Anyway, I found it a bit slow to begin with but I really enjoyed it overall, so stick with it.

Strangely, I never really got into Avernum 4 that much, but maybe I need to give it another time while waiting for the new Geneforge. And I really look forward to it.
