View Full Version : Anyone like the Dark Sun series?

The Dark Sun games were by far my favourite CRPGs when I was younger. I finished the first game several times, but I don't believe I ever finished the second, although I know I got far. My main tactic back then was to create a party of only half-giants, which surprisingly works very well. =P
They were really good games for the time. Something like a spiritual predecessor to the Baldur's Gate series. Lots of things to do, different outcomes of quests, hidden magical equipment, etc.
Awesome games, in my opinion! Does anyone else like them?

Yep... I loved the Dark Sun series. As a matter of fact I fired up the first one just a couple of weeks ago using DosBox... but I haven't given it much time yet because I'm trying to finish Avernum 5.
I played them both when they originally came out and loved them. They were quite different both in setting and mechanics for the time... a fresh change of pace. I will probably try to replay them both within the next few months.

They were nice, but they are also famous for "The Bugs" which made me give up on them. Game breaking bugs.

I enjoyed them as well. Lots of fun to play back in the day.

I enjoyed the first one, but never managed to win the final battle:)

I didn't find the bugs too bad at the time, although I did run into the bug where enemies refuse to attack you for the rest of the game, haha. I believe Wake of the Ravager had the more severe bugs, such as critical items not being put into the game, etc.

I don't really remember the bugs, I was more forgiving back then. They were excellent games though, such a great setting I thought, I don't understand why they don't use that over the bloody forgotten realms a bit more often.

I totally adore the setting and the games themselves too. In fact Dark Sun and Eye of the Beholder series are the best (and longest staying on my PC) RPGs I've ever played.
I played Dark Sun for almost a year, savouring every move and replaying every battle with best results. I remember sleeping and those battle tactics haunting my dream!
(although I never got very far in the second one: character placement on screen seemed way too awkward to do battle. All characters sort of huddled together in one small mess and it was sometimes impossible to find the needed pixels. So, that battle awkwardness totally killed the gameplay for me. Shame, really. Why in the world didn't they use hexagons?)
Ah, imagine if Bill Gates (or the like) spent their billiions on remaking cool RPG games with top-notch hand-drawn pixelart graphics...

I think big publishers will start doing that in the future. I have no idea when... but look at hollywood, they've started remaking a lot of good movies from the past. But then again the movie industry is a lot older than computer gaming so maybe it'll be a while before that happens. The problem with remakes though is that they are seldom as good as the original because the director wants to add him/her own "flavour" to the mix.
Speaking of remakes, i just started playing the SVGA remake of Quest for Glory 2: Trail by Fire. Loads of fun! I reccomend it to anyone who enjoyed the QFG series. Sorry if I got off topic....

For some genres the future is here already. Sid Meier has with the exception of the evolution of the Civ series been focused on remakes for quite some time.

Old good games!
I remember the Darksun setting.
I played it pen&paper (AD&D) together with my friends. My name, Gragnak Ulfim, belongs to the defiler (wizard who casts spells consuming the life around him) I was role playing.
I played the pc games and enjoyed them.... eh eh eh, I still remember the final battle vs the tarrasque!
I hope someday we'll see a good remake of the serie.

I agree. Sacred 2 is sort of an remake to me - in 3D, of course, and much more stylish.

Loved everyone one of them. I played the P&P a few times, I was a preserver (same as defiler except we don't take so much life that it destroys that life and the soil around it...hence why Darksuns setting is a barren wasteland. Nothing can grow where a defiler takes life. A preserver tries to get a little bit of life from a larger area, that way it won't kill or destroy the soil. Defilers could cast spells quickly I always had to wait awhile.
I loved the dwarves, halflings and elves. They were nothing like usual dwarves, halfings and elves. You didn't want to mess with a halfling in the world of darksun. They were more savage pigmy than their lovable sneaky cousins.
There is still a group trying to get an online darksun game made. They've been at it awhile and I figured they died out, but there has been some activity over there. I'm no longer holding my breath till it's released but I am crossing my fingers :)
I hope they do get this game made. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Last update to their news section was July 21st 2008 which isn't too bad for them :) Only a few months ago instead of years ago.

I loved the first one. I didn't get very far into the second one because of an annoying bug that I kept running into at the beginning.

I have both of them on my masterpiece collection. Im gonna play them soon after I finish the original gold box series. I never played them before but they both got decent reviews even though the second one had "som small annoying bugs" as the review says. Seems like they never patched the game - I cant find any patch for it.
