View Full Version : The meaning of your screen name
Jaz
November 14th, 2006, 09:41
This is another old OT favorite - what does your forums handle mean? Why did you choose it? Is it your real name, a variation on your real name, a nickname given by others, a name from literature or the movies or *gasp* from a game, or a name you made up yourself? Do you always go by the same name or do you have different 'identities' depending on where you venture? If you're an online gamer, is your online gaming handle the same as your Watch forums name...?
Maylander
November 14th, 2006, 10:17
Maylander - A cleric in Might and Magic 8. I liked the name and figured noone else used it.
Most of the time I use the name Keldorn in games (such as WoW) and other online places/forums. The name comes from Sir Keldorn Firecam, a Paladin in BG2.
If I ever play female in games (I hardly do, it's just not my thing) I use the name Moiraine from Wheel of Time. Talk about a woman with an attitude, hehe, she's great.
Oh yeah, I was known as "Ironfist" previously on various forums, the name of the king in Might and Magic 6, given because of my hardcore approach to games. Well, I was more hardcore in the past, the name doesn't apply anymore in my opinion.
Korplem
November 14th, 2006, 11:37
@Jaz - I don't think you answered your own questions. ;)
*In a gargish voice* "To mean dead one. Dead One," the gargoyle looks at you as though you are an ignoramus.
In the Gargoyle language of the Ultima games Korp means 'dead' or 'death' and Lem means 'one', put them together and you have 'Deadone'. I chose it because I really liked the gargs and Ultima in general. Also, nobody that I know of uses it.
I have several names that I use for games. In military FPS games I sometimes go by ET3 Miller which is my actual rate/rank and name. It's generic enough that I doubt anybody even thinks twice about it.

txa1265
November 14th, 2006, 14:14
txa1265 - that is pretty much what I use everywhere. It is an ancient that I created in my undergrad days for my personal account on the mainframe. It is basically my college fraternity info - 'tx' is for Theta Xi fraternity, 'a' is for Alpha chapter, and '1265' is my roll number.
As for in-game names, anything with a standard profile / username gets txa1265 - which is funny when that is the name of your rapper / fighter in Def Jam Fight for NY ... in RPG's I have a few standard names I use depending on class and gender.
Khass
November 14th, 2006, 15:59
Khass -> Cass -> Casillas -> Iker Casillas -> goalkeeper of Real Madrid soccer team ;)
Always liked to play the goalkeeper in soccer, which is kinda weird, considering my very frail constitution, but eh ...
On forums, I think I can remember the entire history of my nicks, starting from back when I first joined my first forum. It goes like this:
dan27 (RL first name and favourite number) -> HelmuttSheperd (Helmut is the name of a legendary romanian goalkeeper, who defended four penalty strikes out of five in the Champions League final: Barcelona - Steaua Bucharest, 1986; Sheperd is the translation of my last name) -> Cassilias (I couldn't spell it right...) -> some other mispellings -> CassRo (first nick on RPGDot) -> Gravo (RP forum) -> Khass. Kewl, eh? Try that, person-over-30-who's-reading-this :D

I got into the habit of putting an x before and after any name I wanted to get the one I want. Samhain is the name of one of my fave bands of all time, which is named after a pagan holiday, the modern American derivative (Halloween) of which has always been very special to me. I grew up a horror kid, and I'll always be.

Ragnar
November 14th, 2006, 18:23
My real handle is Bluebark. It was my father handle in the AF (Fighter pilot for the 64th FIS). But that really didn’t fit it a Gothic type scenario. So I chose Ragnar. It’s a name from one of those old Viking B movies that came out in the late 50’s early 60’s.
Alrik Fassbauer
November 14th, 2006, 19:41
In the "The Dark Eye" RPG system, "Alrik" is a more than common name. Virtually every child of this world with parents who are not able to imagine better name have "Alrik" as the first name.
My Alrik arose in a beginner's session for that system back in the late 90s. Could be 1997. The game master wanted a proper name for everyone, and "Alrik" was found very, very quickly :D, because it is so much common. ;)
The "Fassbauer" is a little bit more complex story, though.
I wanted a reference to the fantasy genre, and The Hobbit in particular. "Barrel rider" was one of Bilbo's nicknames, which is generally translated as "Faßreiter" or "Fassreiter" into the German language. I decided to put this reference not too near to The Hobbit, though, so I changed it a bit into ... Fassbauer, which means "barrel builder" or "barrel manufacturer" in English language.
I used it since then.
Edit : Just a quick note on "Myrthos" : To me, it sounds like a mixture of "mythos", the German word for "myth", and "myrthe" is the German name for a kind of flower : http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myrte.
Jaz
November 14th, 2006, 19:58
The handle 'Jaz' is one I've been using on and off for RPG-related stuff; my primary Elder Scrolls characters (with the exception of Cyrus from Redguard ;)) all bore names starting with 'Jaz': Jazintha, Jazeera and so on, but originally 'Jaz' was the name of my beloved first p&p Star Wars character who died a most gruesome (and heroic) death back in... '97 *sigh*. All other Jazes are named in his honor, but none ever came close. He himself was named after the IOmega JAZ drive; our GM demanded that we came up with a nickname/handle/whatever for our guys within 2 minutes or they'd have to go by number only, and folks at the next table were discussing magneto-optical drives (so I thought "MO drive... ZIP drive... JAZ drive...that's it.")
Kewl, eh? Try that, person-over-30-who's-reading-this :D
Okay...
Doom: Speeed (with 3 e). Because I was such an incredibly slow player.
Descent: Compass. I couldn't find my way out of a room with just one exit.
Quake: Kobalt (one of my RL nicknames is 'Nickel' and when playing on my first LAN I didn't want the other guys to know it was me... and the elements bordering nickel are cobalt and copper)
HL: Krefeld (I have a special love-hate relationship with that town), then Crowfield (for globalization's sake - it's still the name I use most often for online accounts).
CS, Q3A: Crowfield
UT: Bite-Me_Willi (don't ask)
Battlefield, DoD: [LYONER]von_Hoell ([LYONER] is the clan's name, and it's an in-joke, so... don't ask)
RO: {GD}GG while I was in the {GD} clan, otherwise Crowfield. They called me GG because I always chose the RO model that looked a bit like GG from the movie Stalingrad, but later it came to stand for 'grenade girl' (at that time, nobody hit anything with those potato mashers and their fickle physics... I did).
So you see, I do remember all my online gaming nicks, and I tend to choose different handles for different games. When it comes to forums, I usually pick a gaming name suiting the forums' topic.

Everyone knows that no photograph taken with a zoom lens can have any artistic merit. We're here to enforce that.
(For the uninitiated, a prime lens is one that doesn't zoom.)
I don't have any standard names I pick for games. I try to think of one that fits the character I'm creating. And apparently unlike Corwin (going by his essay on role-playing in RPG's) I have no trouble role-playing a very wide variety of characters; in fact I play RPG's to get out of my real-life persona. Which is why I rarely play evil characters. ];-{>

In C-RPGs, I tend to use names with an ancient Greek flavour, since archaeology is my greatest hobby. "Thalos" is my most used name, then.
lostnumber
November 14th, 2006, 22:53
The first nickname I ever had was whathappened. That name hails from the good old days of quake and team fortress classic. Whathappened was born when I made my first attempt to establish a connection to an online gaming network, the name of which I cannot remember. For those of you who remember HEAT is was something like that. Anyway, my 36.6 dial-up connection was finicky at best so many of my attempts that day were met with failure. When I finally got through I was asked for a user name, in my confusion I typed in whathappened the rest is history, well sort of.
Lostnumber is the name of a somewhat fearsome looking monster from FF7. To be specific, it's the one that attacks immediately after the safe in the Shinra mansion is opened. I liked the monster and loved the name so I took it. By today's graphical standards Lostnumber is no longer very fearsome looking; I just keep the name around for its nostalgic value. Chances are that if you have seen the name lostnumber or thelostnumber anywhere else it’s been me; either that or its some lesser imposter.
The avatar is Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force playing the air guitar in an attempt impress a prostitute he brought to his termite riddled house. I could go on but trying to explain the premise behind an ATHF episode to anyone who hasn't seen it is a hopeless endeavor. It anyone reading this hasn’t watched at least a few ATHF episodes I would encourage you to do so. They take a little getting used to, but once accustom, they’re nothing short of hilarious.

slam23
November 14th, 2006, 23:56
Slam23 is my tribute to the best basketball player ever to grace the court (for you pagans: it's Michael Jordan). The slam part came about when I discovered chat rooms for the first time, back in about 1996-97. It was the site of a hoops magazine called "SLam" and I couldn't believe that I was the first one to use the nick. The experience of instantly being able to talk hoops with people from all over the world blew my mind. Especially when you live in a hoops-starved country like I do. Somehow of all my nicks it stuck and it is the only one I use now.
Besides slam23, I have used MrBassman (another hobby of mine and real life nick when I performed with my band) and Ancalagon_the_Black or BlackAncalagon if they won't allow underscores. That last one is a tribute to Tolkien and it refers to the primordial dragon that Morgoth created to be his protector. The name literally means "iron-jawed swan". I'm absolutely a sucker for dragons in games and movies. I only just found out that "Ancalagon" can also mean "a fossil of a priapulid worm that is commonly found in the Burgess Shale". Bummer....

Not Anomalocaris ? I know a few bits about the Burgess Shale, since it has always been fascinating me (I've studied Geology and Palaontology for a few years, by the way).
But Anomalocaris was no worm ... so you might be right, although I've never heard about this worm before ...

But I see what the misunderstanding is: Phonetic spelling. You see for us
Greeks "Th" phonetically is pronounced as the one in "thesaurus" for instance.
So for the names to be understood correctly when you want to pronounce a
"tee" just use a simple "t" t with an inaudible "h" simply will not do since we
dont have a relevant device in our Language (Meertos phoneticaly but using
the y is OK since it makes us think of the Greek ypsilon). same Goes for Talos
(Thalos) that someone mentioned above...
Hmm on retrospection phonetic spelling is made for you people to pronounce

My nick is the name were my real life name comes from: tiziano comes from titus.
but only found that out later. I wanted something that sounded like a roman warrior or emperor and based on my own name so I took the tit (my name is pronounced titsiano) and just threw a us after it

yes it is a far way between skullion and an emperor. but the emperor parts only works for titus, which nickname i also use in real life among friends.
skullion came from skeletor, in the time i played D2, skeletor was taking, skulllord en skullmaster too. So i kept the skull and trewed a more somewhat latin/scientif ending to it and there it was: skullion :D

November 17th, 2006, 07:35
I originally got my screen name many years ago, just after the original EverQuest was released. I purchased the game and stumbled through the set-up and account creation process and ultimately arrived at a point where I needed to choose an account username. At the time, having never played an MMORPG before, I thought it was asking me what I wanted my character to be named (since I didn't at the time understand the concept behind an "account name"). So I thought... "well... this is an important decision! This gaming experience is bound to be an incredible ride that'll last a long time! So I put a lot of thought into it and wanted to have something witty, demanding of authority, and yet deserving of some degree of respect. Ultimately, and with the help of a thesaurus, I came up with deity... which addressed my desire for a name that was deserving of authority, and in day-dreaming of the soon-to-come immersive experience in a medieval world where magic and swords and armor were the tools of conquest and survival, I remembered the great movies based in the same era I had enjoyed. I remembered that a man, upon becoming a knight, was conventionally henceforth addressed with the word "sir" before his name, in recognition of his honor. Thus, I put sir before deity and said "this is good." Haha...anyway, I realized that the account wasn't anything anyone would see so I never actually used in the my EverQuest experience. Instead, I invented new names and a role-playing story behind each of my characters. However, I needed to memorize sirdeity to log into my account before I could enter the game everytime I played. Soon after playing EverQuest I started visiting forums for games and found that it was difficult to remember my usernames for all the various forums I'd visit... so instead of writing them all down and looking them up whenever I forgot one, I simply used what I already had memmorized... and why not? I like my username... you could say I've grown attatched to it =) Anyway, so I use SirDeity at every forum and every registration that isn't extremely confidential. I use different password though so don't get any ideas ; )

Lintra
November 17th, 2006, 15:35
One day my brother and I were starting a Dragon Quest game, and I wanted a good androgenous name for a red haired elf I was creating ... I was running on mental empty ... and then I recalled a name from a Zelazny book. At the time Lintra was mentioned only once (the hellmaiden who cost Benedict his arm). I thought, oh good, a nice obscure name.
Played the Lintra character through 100's of years of his life ... and a good 9 months of my life ... he had some fantastic adventures ... before he had to be retired to NPC status - as there reaches a point in an RPG characters life where they are just too powerful. He was a healer, beast master (long story there), ranger, courtier, air mage and fencer. One of his 50+ year adventures resulted in the aquisition/creation of "Cats Paw" and "Mouse Whisker" (again feeling unimaginative and fell back on Fritz Lieber for inspiration) - a rapier and main gouche (sp?) that rank amoung the most powerful artifacts in a magic item poor world. Both where created by a master swords smith that Lintra had rescued (more than once) and were just warm ups for his ultimate creation. Both are interesting in that they had the same critical failure during the creation process and look like worthless lumps of soft iron - a major plus in Lintra's eyes!!
Some of the silliness exhibited with Pinnen has it's roots in Lintra's gaming experience ... he did actually manage to use a mop head as a wig and pull it off (okay there was a hood involved, but it *did* generate a good picture, and a good laugh, and hid his bright red hair). He had a very complex and full character ... a bit of Rincewind crossed with a young Elrond (try role playing *that* someday).
So, a decade later as the proto internet was forming and coalesing I choose that as my nick (handle?) and have stuck with it ever since. Despite the appearance of the original Lintra in later books it still remains a name I can usually use ('cept in Hyjal realm of WoW. Gotta find the owner and ask them to kill the character if they aren't using it).
There. You asked for it.

And I ain't wearing ladies underware (and it's not my nose that gets longer when saying this  )
Bartacus stands for my name combined with the famous Spartacus (gladiator movie from the ancient times for those kids around here). Sometimes I get adressed Bartus too, but that's a different story -> Comes from one perticular Simpson episode where Bart gets chased by Homer and they get those name tags like in a documentary. It was first translated in Dutch like this: "Bartus reculus" and "Homer erectus". My hotmail adres (which I rarely use today) makes it even more clear. (bartus_reculus@hotmail.com)
Another username is GothicFan or RealGothicFan. The reason of the first is obvious, the second was due to the fact the Jowood boards were at first seperated in an English and German part. When the came together, one of the German guys was faster then me to rejoin and took my/his username before me.

OK, mine is stupid but here goes:
When I was an adolescent (12-14 years I think) some friends and I had a "book club" where we would write our own "Choose Your Own Adventure" stories. You know those kids books that had branching multi-path stories and endings ...

So, my screen name: comes from the name of my real father, Georg Rendl, a famous austrian writer and painter (he died in the seventies). I just added some pseudo-roman flavor (to honour my grand father, who wrote the most popular books to teach latin in school here in Austria) :-)
Pladio

I only had one other name before this one.
It was Empiresfan, I first started using it with The Settlers 3 online. It's very simple, I was interested in a multitude of empires, Roman, Greek, Persian, Babylonian, Chinese, Mongol,... So Empiresfan.
Pladio came when I started playing Diablo II online. I had to choose a name for my character and I chose a Paladin at the time, 90% of the names I wanted were chosen already, except for the odd names like : fdgffde, qhql or kfhq, so I chose Pladio. :D
KazikluBey

Kaziklu Bey means Impaler Lord in Turkish, which is what the Ottomans called Vlad III Basarab/Draculea/Tepes.
I've also used Ro'Jadre and Terahnee (both from the Myst multiverse), but nowadays I mostly use KazikluBey. Male protagonists in RPGs generally find themselves being called Ro'Jadre though.
Fenris

Fenris is the germanic Version of "Fenrir", a giant Wolf that was prophesized to kill Odin, the highest norse God. The gods wanted to chain him and made a Wager with him, that he can't break the Chains they create - they tried two different strong iron Chains and he broke both. Than they tried an enchanted one, which made Fenris suspiciuos. He made them promise to unchain him, should he not be able to break it, and one of the Gods should place his hand in Fenris Mouth, as protection against betrayal. At first no one of the Gods wanted to do that, then Tyr, the War-God (or should I say "a" War-God - it seems to me that every ancient nordic/germanic God was part War-God^^) had enough courage to put his Hand in the Wolf-Mouth. Fenris couldn't break the enchanted Chain, the Gods didn't free him as promised and Tyr lost his Arm ;)
Fenris was betrayed by the high ones, something that happens to me a lot, so I choose this Name. Back at the Dot I had the name "Schattenherz" which was the Surename of my favourite PnP-Charakter and means "Shadowheart" in English. My male Protagonists end usually with Fenris as First Name and Shadowheart or Shadowspawn (depending if a "dark" Race is available) as Surename.
Oh, and I played the Lone Wolf Series until around Book 12 or so... fun, but couldn't hold a candle against "The Warlock of the burning Mountain" from Steve Jackson (Back-translated from German - the Name might differ^^)
