View Full Version : Your list of favorite NON- CRPGs...

As it is, we have a list of favorite CRPGs and we have a list of the most disappointing games. Do you have favorite games other than CRPGs?
If so, which, and why? It would be nice if you could give the genres of your favorite games, the platform(s) you played them on and the year they were published, if possible, so other readers can get an overview.

I love old adventure games, such as Larry 1-7(excluding 4, as there was no 4), Space Quest 1-6, Monkey Island 1-3 and so on. The reason why I love these games is simple: Great humor!
Other than that I also like certain strategy games like the old C&C games or Warcraft games. My favourite strategy game is probably Civ 2, amazing game with great gameplay.

Nowadays I play generally only CRPGs. I used to play FPS's but I lost interest in them and sometime and don't have nerves to play things like latest DOOM.
FPSs (used to play, gave up totally)
Half-Life (the first one)
Deus Ex (if you consider it FPS)
Strategies (I really prefere turn based games)
All HOMM
Civilization (the two last one)

I usually only play RPG's, but I did enjoy the 4 Monkey Island games!!

You might call me a 'polygamer'; my tastes in games span a wide variety of genres and platforms. Sure, I prefer some genres (shooters, CRPGs, platformers, fighting games, RTSes, adventures, puzzle games) to others, but you might still catch me playing a sports game (for example) if you look hard enough ;). . There is already a topic covering favorite CRPGs over at the General CRPG forum, so I'll refrain from naming those.
Enough of the introductory blah blah. These are among my non-CRPG favorites:
1) Realms of the Haunting (action adventure, 1996, PC): The best ever. A true underdog. The only game that came close in spirit was Undying, but it wasn't as good.
2) Zork: Nemesis (graphical adventure, 1996, PC): The most sober of the Zork games, but it was hauntingly beautiful and atmospheric. I also loved the rest of the series, but none of the others made it into my top …errrm… 15 list.
3) Thief 2 (action adventure, PC): The best of the Thief games. Brilliant. The Children of Karras were… well, they were something, I'm sure of that - I love this game. It kept me on the edge of my seat. But I also loved the other two games, so let's just make this 'The Thief series' instead.
4) Day of Defeat (MP CTF shooter, HalfLife-mod, PC): my favorite WWII-themed MP game. Nerve-wracking CTF action.
5) The Heretic/HeXen series (shooters/action adventures, PC): I just can't decide which one I liked best… I just know it wasn't Heretic II (I'm not partial to the third person perspective, though I must admit their 3rd person solution was close to perfect. Okay, then let's just say I like the Towers of Darkness collection the best, which includes Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Rider, Hexen and Deathkings of the Dark Citadel. I still replay them at least three times a year for a quick fix.
6) The Wolfenstein 3D series (shooters, PC and SNES): I could never stick to my top ten… errr fifteen list if I didn't group some games, even if they were not meant to be grouped, so I have to bundle Wolf 3D, SNES Wolf 3D, Rise of the Triad and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Wolf 3D was the game that convinced me to buy a PC, so here we go.
7) The Doom series (shooters, PC and N64): by which I mean Doom/Ultimate Doom, Doom 2: Hell on Earth, and Final Doom; I hereby officially exclude the N64 Doom and Doom 3. Another set of games I replay regularly.
8) The Unreal/Tournament series (shooter/MP shooters, PC and Xbox): Unreal, Unreal Tournament, UT2004 and Unreal Championship 2. I won't include Unreal 2 or the first Championship for a variety of reasons (meaning, I'm too lazy to explain).
9) The Tekken series (fighting games, Arcade and Playstation): I ran into the first Tekken (on arcade) during a vacation. I fell in love with Jack, and I'm still in love.
10) The SoulBlade/SoulCalibur series (fighting games, arcade, PSX, Dreamcast and Xbox): My favorite armed fighting games. Love the Katas.
11) The Diamond Mine type games (puzzle games, for every platform under the sun): by which I mean Diamond Mine, Columns, Bejeweled et. al. All that glitters may not be gold, but if it also explodes… all the better.
12) The Kyrandia series (adventure, PC): Kyrandia 3 is my favorite part - thanks to Malcolm, the grumpy protagonist, and the studio audience.
13) The Turrican series (platformer, Amiga, SNES and PC): This definitely is my favorite platfomer franchise. The music is great, and the two SNES games were graphically brilliant as well.
14) Mr. Nutz (platformer, SNES): My favorite stand-alone jump'n run game, if a bit on the tough side.
15) Keen Dreams (platformer, PC, 1991): Keen Dreams is my favorite Commander Keen game - don't ask me why, as the other 6 are pretty much the same...
16) The Mortal Kombat series (fighting games/adventure, Arcade, SNES, PC, PSX, Xbox): I'm not sure about which I'd consider my favorite MK game. Either the Trilogy for PSX or MK: Deception for the Xbox; the latter has an extended adventure/exploration/story mode which may be a bit shallow as a questing game, but good for a quick fix.
17) The C&C series (RTSes/shooter, PC): My favorite RTS franchise. I loved all the C&C games, including the shooter Renegade (and I really liked the C&C cameos in Lands of Lore 3). Generals, however, wasn't quite as good. The FMVs were what had set the other C&C games apart, and Generals' FMVs are pitiable. They shouldn't have dumped their film team. Thinking of it, they shouldn't have dumped Westwood to begin with ^_^ (can you tell that I'm quite partial to Westwood games? Probably). - Oh. Wait. I also like their Dune RTSes…
See? Now it's a list of seventeen, and I fear I have many more favorites, but I can't think of them right now. Should have made a Top Ten list for each genre...

Other than CRPGs i play PS2 games with my girlfriend and her brother. We are now playing Mortal Kombat: Armageddon with him and bashing our heads (mugai ryu rulezzz). Also, I find Katamari pretty entartaining for small gaming sessions i think. And my girlfriend loves adventures of PS2 and i watch her as she plays. Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill, Broken Sword, Larry 8, Rule of Rose, Fatal Frame, Shadow of Collossus, ICO, God of War.......
Also, i played and finished FEAR and Quake 4 last year and enjoyed them much. Also, tried Prey. First levels are very creative, but than it becomes boring.
Other than that i am a big fan of Legacy of Kain series (eagerly waits for a sequel) and old humurous Lucas Arts adventures (Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, Sam&Max, Grim Fandango...) I just want to try new Sam&Max game, but can not find enough time.

Top Non-RPG's
1. Jedi Knight II - once I got fully back into gaming, this was my first title I really anticipated - starting with the cancelled ObiWan in mid-2000 until its release in 2002, and the way it brought the Star Wars universe to life was just tremendous. One of my faves to this day.
2. Deus Ex - more than a shooter, but not really a RPG, but just a great overall experience.
3. Castle Wolfenstein - yep, the original - my first gaming love, on my Apple ][+ in 1981!
4. Wolfenstein 3D - got me back into things, and made me a total FPS nut, a love I carry to this day.
5. Dark Forces - combining two of my greatest loves - Star Wars and FPS.
6. Jedi Knight / Mysteries of the Sith - soon after both kids were born I had to travel for work training 1 week a month for 9 months ... had a nice new laptop and these games!
7. No One Lives Forever 1 & 2 - smart, funny and just excellent overall games.
8. Metroid Prime Hunters (DS) / Syphon Filter (PSP) - proof that handheld shooters can be truly excellent games.
9. Soldier of Fortune II - over-the top violence and etch-a-sketch linear level design tied to a very average story, but who cares?!?! The shooter gameplay remains top notch to this day, and the flow of events puts you into interesting battle after interesting battle ...
10. Thief Deadly Shadows - perhaps not the best of the series, but it is the one that really stuck with me - perhaps it is because I played most of it in a hotel room next to Boston Children's Hospital while my older son was there for kidney surgery and my wife was with him (only one could stay) and my younger son was with my parents, and I just couldn't sleep waiting for the phone to ring with some emergency all night ... add the headphones and pure silence to the mix, and it is a great experience.
11. Doom / Duke Nukem / etc - all of the early shooters ... just love them all :)

11. Doom / Duke Nukem / etc - all of the early shooters ... just love them all :)All of them? Really all of them? Even Depth Dwellers, Corridor 7, Operation Bodycount and *shudder* Angst?
Don't get me wrong, I loved Corridor 7... but I don't think anybody else did.
Hmmmm, I also loved the Legacy of Kain games, SoF II (which catered to my... erm... baser instincts), Dark Forces, Jedi Knight 1 and 2, Serious Sam 1 and 2, several of the Tomb Raider games... Republic Commando... the Sam Fisher games, forgot the title... The Dig (the adventure with the most beautiful score ever)... the Catacomb series... the Blake Stone games!!!... *sigh* so many games, so little time.
EDIT dte's DW Bradley post in the other thread just reminded me... another all-time favorite of mine was Cybermage: Darklight Awakening. As buggy as an ant heap, but THE GAME! Great atmosphere. Decent story.

I know, I know ... it is like saying that you love all of the RPG's of the 80's ... but I love loads of stuff, and played tons of things I have great memories of, even if they weren't great. Stuff like Blood, Rise of the Triad, Eradicator, Shadow Warrior, Outlaws, and so on.

Also in no particular order (kind of alphabetical as I look over to my games shelf which is sorted that way mostly ;) ):
- American McGee's Alice: An awesome fantasy action/shooter game based on the Q3 engine and also loosely based on the Alice in Wonderland novel
- Battlefield 2: Despite its flaws, the best modern day military shooter IMHO
- Comanche series: Great heli combat games... all of them
- Command & Conquer series: My favorite ones are the first one and Red Alert and I also tremendously enjoyed the hell out of C&C Renegade, the action shooter which was for some strange reason not too warmly welcomed by most other people.
- Duke Nukem 3D: 'nuff said :D
- Fahrenheit (a.k.a Indigo Prophecy): I'm usually not into adventure games but this one was an excellent and very intense, truly cinematic gaming experience. Wish the controls would have been better though...
- Ghost Recon plus expansions: Great squad-based tactical military shooter. Didn't buy G.R.A.W because -like a lot of other games these days- it felt like a typical consolized crap port from the demo.
- Project I.G.I series: Awesome stealth shooter with a real story and cutscenes. A bit like playing a Bond movie. One of the most underrated series ever IMHO.
- Privateer series: Great fun trading, exploring and fighting in space
- Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Great WW2-based shooter
- Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six series: Enjoyed the original one and Rogue Spear plus expansions the most. It went downhill from Ravenshield IMHO and I didn't even buy Lockdown after the (IMHO ofc) very disappointing demo.
- Star Wars games: X-Wing and TIE fighter series, of course, and also liked the Dark Forces series plus the Jedi Knight series. Rebellion and Empire at War were sort of great fun, too, at least for a limited time.
- Strike Commander: One of the best (action) flight sims ever. The story, the squad management, the actual sim... aahhh... the memories. Same goes for Pacific Strike which was very similar but WW2-based.
- Tomb Raider series: Especially liked no. 1 - 4 and the more recent Legend.
- Total Air War: An awesome F-22 flight sim with a real-time dynamic campaign.
- Wing Commander series: Probably the best non-Star Wars space combat sims ever.

Well, I like Legacy of Kain : Soul Reaver 2. I've played a little bit of the other games but I liked this one the most. (as a side note it was the only one I completed by myself. And I really hate Defiance but there is another thread for that). I adore TBS titles, especially Civ 3/4, HoMM series (except 5, haven't played that), Disciples 2 and Age of Wonders. I also play a little bit of RTS titles, particularly I like Warcraft series, Age of Empires 1/2, C&C Red Alert 2.

Moon Patrol!!! *boing boing boing*
This was my favorite game back in the mid-80s (for the Atari 2600). Counterstrike was my favorite MP game back in... ehm... whenever it came out, but being an old school TF player (not TFC!!!!), I was (and still am) pretty partial to CTF, so I switched to Day of Defeat the day I discovered it... never to return.
As for our CS-playing amok guys, well... what do you expect? How many CS players were there in Germany alone, didn't they say 2,5 millions? Two of which blew their fuses. At least one of them worked for a company I know, which makes 50%! So perhaps we should disband the company as it might be responsible for 50% of recent wannabe mass murderer nutcases?
It's not the games' fault, people. Industry maybe responsible for many things, but parents, teachers, politicians and the rest of society are just as responsible. y Perhaps you have to be a nutcase in the first place to enjoy playing these games (<- me). And who's responsible for kids being seriously disturbed? Their parents. Go jail them! Come on...!
Seriously, it's all about rocks and glass houses. I know several politicians whose kids ran away because their parents didn't have enough time for them... then the kids became small time criminals. That was during my time as a parole officer. So let's outlaw politics.
These games *might* do something for our wannabe mass murderers, though... they might train their 1337 skillz. If you don't count the last nutcase who injured 37 (most of those not with his guns), but didn't manage to kill anyone but himself. Loser.
This, folks, is about people who are out of touch with real life. Who need a replacement virtual life. Who must haunt the net to be successful. Who can't cope. This is about sociopaths.
Did I make sense? Hardly. But at least I used many, many words.
I also tremendously enjoyed the hell out of C&C Renegade, the action shooter which was for some strange reason not too warmly welcomed by most other people.Ah, then we two were the ones responsible for Renegade's high Editor's Choice ratings in the RPGDot Games of the Year contest back then

Did I make sense? Hardly. But at least I used many, many words.
You did and I fully agree. This is a ridiculous witch hunt once again. Anyone who has read this last guy's (Emsdetten amok run) final suicide note and watched the video (both of which are available in English since he wanted to get his "message" out to the entire world, not just Germans) must have realized by now that this guy was one deeply disturbed individual. Nothing more and nothing less. There wasn't a single reference to games or movies or any other media in his statements. To the contrary. He seemed paranoid about being manipulated by any form of media. Everything that he said just sounded like a compilation of "Rage against the machine" lyrics or [fill in the lyrics of any other aggressive anti-establishment band]. He just wanted to come across as tough and cool. That's all.
It seems crystal clear to me that the guy had serious mental issues in the first place. If you just go by his very statements then what should be banned is 1) brand clothing (yay, let's all go commie/socialist and just wear the same gov't issued clothing brand), 2) hip-hop ('cause he didn't like it as much as the "cool" kids at his school did), 3) pretty girlfriends (because he couldn't have one we all shouldn't have one).
Come on... anyone who does a bit of basic research on the case and actually checks out what the guy had to say, should realize very quickly that video games played just about no role at all. He just couldn't cope with not being a member of the "cool kids gang".
So... he couldn't be a part of them, so then he decided to destroy them. And (luckily) failed pretty miserably at that. End of story.
Of course, a lot of journalists and politicians have simply failed to do that basic research so here we go again with a retarded discussion about 'killer games' *sigh*.
Ah, then we two were the ones responsible for Renegade's high Editor's Choice ratings in the RPGDot Games of the Year contest back then
LOL, I don't remember that at all, but if it was indeed so then Renegade surely deserved every single point it got :) .

LOL, I don't remember that at all, but if it was indeed so then Renegade surely deserved every single point it got :) .Definitely! Our incredible taste in games brought Renegade a well-deserved 4th place in the Editors' Choice Non-RPG awards back in 2002. UT 2003 was No. 1, and I doubt we two were innocent there, either... at least I know I wasn't :).

No real order :
- Indy Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (talk about a good story & immersion ? here you have it. Enough said. ;) )
- Monkey Island I (Same here - plus loads of humour !)
- Zanzarah (one of the most immersive games - you won't believe the feeling you get while walking through this thick wood ... sadly most reviewers put it into one box with Pokemon - most undeserved, as I believe, although Zanzarah is looking quite cute and gives you the task to grow fairies you duel with ...)
- Commander Keen 4 & 5 (just fun. enough said)
- Tropico (my favourite non-flight sim. it's one of the *very few* games that stays on my harddisk)
- Beyond Good & Evil (a dream - but a dream that becomes harsh reality in the light that shows the corruption in this world)
- Kyrandia Trilogy (especially the middle part) (wonderful games. simply gems)
- Simon the Sorcerer I (same here)
- Homeworld (made me buy the Yes LP "The Ladder" - found out it was the best music for my taste I had heard for ages ! - I would *instantly* buy a Star Wars game using THAT engine !))
- The Longest Journey (very immersive, interesting and weird story)
- X-Wing (fun)
- X-Wing Alliance (even better fun)
Jaz
November 29th, 2006, 22:59
- Kyrandia Trilogy (especially the middle part)Oh, that was the Hand of Fate! Very, very funny. Unfortunately, the German version was unsolvable by logic alone due to a trivial translation issue: an item needed for making a sandwich was listed as 'a toadstool' - the English language name for a type of poisonous mushroom. In the German version's sandwich item list, it was called 'Giftpilz', meaning 'poisonous mushroom'. Too bad the item actually needed for making the sandwich was a wooden stool a toad had sat on... and making the right sandwich was quest-critical. Needless to say that solving the puzzle in German was pure trial and error. Fortunately, though, you could switch languages during play... and Xanthia was modeled after the game designer's wife. He really had a thing for back-talking blondes... just think of LoL's Dawn.

Damn it! Why hasn't anyone mentioned Bioforge. The control was horrible, but the story really, really sticks. The atmosphere in that game is phenomenal! Return the fork!!!
Alrik Fassbauer
November 30th, 2006, 15:30
Yes, I remember that translation issue.
The "toadstool" reappears in several games, and I think *every* game has a different translation for it ... It's almost like an wordgame eluding translation.
I just wanted to add two games I only played as Demos, but are as absolute unique as a thing can be : Mike Oldfield's Tres Lunas and Maestro games.
Because these are no games as you might imagine them, they are instead pure fun in exploring. Like a game should be, in my opinion.
It's like experimenting a lot : You do things just out of fun, not really expecting something special - but as soon as you do it, the whole scenery changes !
Of course most of "normal" gamers would be bored of it, because these games don't have any real goal. They don't need to. All they want is provide fun. Nothing more, nothing less.
And of course it's a thing how you define "fun" ...

Currently playing Medieval II: Total War, which while fun doesnt quite qualify for this kind of list yet (it might after I've played it some more and if the retarded "make no peace ever" AI is fixed).
Hmm, I suspect most casual gamers would dismiss my taste as rather dry. I like realism, especially in historical games (and I am a bit of a history buff). I mainly play turn based strategy games and subgenres of that when not playing RPGs. It is hard to rank those games, it wholly depends on the situation.
Long siingle player campaigning: Europa Universalis II and Victoria by Paradox Interactive. Use pausable real time (like Baldurs Gate or the Total war games) on a global map featuring nearly all countries in the world 1419-1919. Has functioning world market and the like due to the number of actors (market mechanisms tend to be broken in computer games as there arent enough buyers or sellers). EU2 is the more polished of the two, with more fluid gameplay, but I enjoy the Victorian period more. I have also had fun with the Warlords series, and with civ clones like Master of Magic back in the day. Colonization and Master of Orion II are other memorable classics, but unfortunately bog down in micromanagement hell (unlike MoM which you can win by simply burning all enemy cities to the ground).
Business games:
Railroad Tycoon III is immense fun, much more of a serious business game than Sid Meiers Railroads.
Capitalism II simulates production and retailing business. It is cool and particularly fun to play in MP against my gf (who has a major in computational finance)
Merchant Prince, Machiavelli the Prince, and Merchant Prince II are all basically the same. Buy low and sell high in a Marco Polo-esque renaissance world. Buy cardinals, assassinate the pope, and vote for a pope of your choosing. A humourous yet somewhat historical game.
Port Royale I is the best in a long line of trading games from Ascaron, and the least dry one. Fun for a while, but a bit repetitive.
Sports Games:
The Football manager series, and its predecessors Championship Manager. IMHO FM 2006 is the best incarnation of the series (the latest one for some reason doesnt use a "huge" database, which makes it hard to find foreigners willing to play in the sucky Swedish league, and retaining more players manually slows the game down to a crawl). A number crunching game, but oh so addictive if you are into football.
Action games: Seadogs and Mount and Blade are similar in a way. One is Elite with Pirate ships and rpg-like stats and quests, the other is Elite with swords and rpg-like quests. Mount and blade has the best battles medieval combat engine ever seen in a game, period. You can get a demo from www.taleworlds.com. Seadogs is a pirate game which, while uglier than its successors "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Age of Pirates: Carribean Tales" is reasonably bug free, something that cant be said for the later incarnations. These games have one of the best sea battle systems I've seen.
Quick (completed in less than 1h) games: Gold of the Americas, a strategy game set in the new world with a lot of humour. Exploit slaves, indians, or your colonists. Hide your gold stash from the fat king's taxman. Prevent the colonists from forming stupid "free" nations. Revolution '76 is a turn based game where you try to free the American colonists from evil England, ally with France, persecute loyalists, etc. No Greater Glory is a somewhat slower (2-3h if you know what you are doing) ACW game by the same team, where you have to deal with generals who might be cautious and not press the attack when you ask them to (McClellan) and play as either Lincoln or Davis. Great game but a bit heavy in the logistical part.
Multiplayer: Worms is the king of hot seat multiplayer with mildly drunk buddies. For network gaming with my gf I prefer Capitalism II, Seven Kingdoms I/II, and certain relatively modern AD&D games;)
The very best games I've played were on the Amiga though. Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge and Supercars II were PERFECTLY balanced hotseat multiplayer games with that drunken buddy. Both came from the same developers and allowed split screen play. Lotus is a very early third person racing game akin to Need for Speed. Supercars II is a top-down car game where you dont just race, you use missiles, mines, and various upgrades to knock out your friend and the AI cars on a course with obstacles such as trains... And then there was the unforgettable North and South, based upon the (French?) comic Les Tuniques Bleues. A humourous ACW game:) Sensible Soccer was also a blast to play with the old digital joysticks:)
If anyone has similar taste the Paradox games can be bought online at Paradox website, Mount and Blade can be found at www.taleworlds.com, and many of the really old games can be found at various nostalgia sites. Try demos and check out forums/screenshots first though. Many of my games are an acquired taste....

Late posting on this list, but since I am a list-loving type, here goes:
MOO2
HOMM II-V
Disciples series--all.
Pharoah (city-builder)
Emperor(ditto)
Europa 1400: the Guild
Alpha Centauri
Also enjoyed the single player versions of Warcraft-thru Frozen Throne, and Spellforce, but RTS is a real challenge for me as I'm not good at rushing, something you probably guessed from all the TB titles. ;)

Same for me - I'm very good at FPS and action-RPG, but greatly prefer turn-based strategy games ... I played and reviewed Dragonshard and Star Wars Empire at War and Spellforce ... and have rejected every RTS since ...

I used to hang out at the ToEE Atari boards. and I dimly remember all the (mostly negative) talk about Dragonshard--wasn't it supposed to be real time DnD?*shudder*
Spellforce wasn't so bad, tho it got to be too much work after awhile ; )

Yep. Dragonshard = poor attempt to recreate Warcraft III in a D&D setting. It failed just like most attempts to clone Blizzard games ;) .

Yesterday i took a look again at my sister's Zoo Tycoon ( main game with all addons given as presents by me).
I instantly fell in love with that game again. It's still one of my favourite games.
I remember having played Caesar and Pharaoh very much, too.
These were the most time-consuming games of my life. :D ;)

I play games for their stories first and foremost. That makes me naturally interested in Adventuregames, but it also happens I play First Person Shooters like Undying, Doom 3 and No One Lives Forever. A rare exception was me enjoying the story in Warcraft III, otherwise I often skip strategy games and simulators.

I'm just the opposite, the story is the last thing on my mind. I mean, a story is nice and all, but I'll read a book or watch a movie if i want an engrossing story.
It's all about the gameplay for me!

I never really liked TFC because it didn't capture the OTF atmosphere, but THIS looks like the real thing again... especially because some of these guys *do* look a lot like the skins I made for us...

I like a good story, but sometimes I just want to sit down and take out some aggression by blowing things/people up. So, my favorite Non CRPG's would be (in no particular order);
1. The Heretic/Hexen games
2. The Thief series
3. Quake 1 & 2
4. The Jedi Knight games along with Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy
5. Sin and Wages of Sin Mission Pack
6. Shadow Warrior
7. Duke Nukem
8. Unreal and expansion
9. Undying
10. Terminal Velocity
11. Fury3
12. Hellbender
13. Freespace 1 & 2
14. StarLancer and FreeLancer
15. Tachyon
16. Turok 1 & 2
17. Soldier Of Fortune 1 & 2
18. Hitman series
19. Need For Speed High Stakes and Porche Unleashed
20. Doom series
These are all PC titles. I must admit that there are a few N64 titles I like as well. I'm particularly fond of the wrestler I created on Wrestlemania 2000 and recreated in WWF No Mercy.
1. Quake 1..it was my first online game...And it rocked the house.. Addiction raised in extreme levels. :)
2. Half-life 1..holds still the best single player fps place. Storyline, level design etc..great stuff. btw http://www.blackmesasource.com/ a mod which might intrest every hl fan. Its not ready yet, but the quality of work they have shown so far looks stunning...yes a remake of the orginal on hl2 engine :)
3. Jedi knight series. I'm a sw freak, e.g one of those guys who can remember the colour of ben's lightsaber :P So no wonder why jedi knight 1, jedi outcast and jedi academy are all games I have played atleast dozen times through...and not to mention the hours i've spent online dueling!
4. Hitman series. From the very moment I saw "Leon" I waited a game which would let me become a real professional killer. And the series is just getting better and better by every game..blood money was one of the best games I played last year. thinking man's shooter would be the word, i'd use here.
5. Max payne games.
6. Enemy territory - great fun online. The best part is you can just hop in and start shooting. Team work and accomplishing objectives is engourraged too..in three words..gameplay is golden :)
7. Mafia.
8. Outcast. A game unlike any other.
9 Severance: the blade of darkness. Heh look at my avatar, its sargon there, say hello to sargon. Simply put best fantasy action game EVER..Melee combat system is very realistic and brutal. I still hope to see same kind of combat system in a real crpg.
10. Doom 2.
11.Like Jaz I'm a fan of arcade beat'em ups. Mortal kombat 1&2 (raiden), Tekken series (paul), street fighter 2, soul blade (the dude with a saber type of weapon) and BUSHIDO blade (black lotus).. There is no better way to spend an evening with friends than drinking and playing tekken :)
12. Resident evil series. Night of the living dead doesn't get any better from this. :)
13. monkey island 2, grim fangango... basicly any LEC adventure from the classic era..
14. Rainbow six series.. I don't consider myself to be a fan of realistic shooters, but r6 is an odd expection.. you can find every r6 game from my shelf. Best part is the cooperation mode. :)
15. Tribes 2. was great fun online, sadly the bugs and constant patching (drastic gameplay changes one after another) killed the community in two years.. I blame sierra for ruining one of the greatest online games.
16. No one lives forever.
17. Metal gear solid

One of my all-time favorite games hasn't been mentioned yet. It's an oldie.
Does anyone remember Conquered Kingdoms? It was a DOS-based strategy game, made for the x386. You played against the computer by choosing a side, selecting a map and placing your forces at semi-random starting locations. The thing that made it special was the maps. A lot of thought obviously went into designing them, enabling opportunities for you to strategize. You couldn't help feeling the love that went into it, and that made a great game even better.
I spent a ridiculous amount of time playing Conquered Kingdoms and still have it to this day.

Hmmm, this'll be fun. I don't play anything without at least a few crpg elements nowadays, but I used too:
1. Bubble Bobble-my favorite version was the C64 one.
2. Mr. Do-I like the arcade or MAME32 version best.
3. Dino Eggs-another C64 classic
4. Jumpman-another C64 classic :), are we seeing a pattern yet?
5. Miner 2049er-um, this was played on the C64
6. Star Raiders-Atari 5200
7. Robotron 2084-this is best on the arcade machine because of the controllers.
8. Pacman-I spent hundreds of dollars mastering this addictive game and its brethren.
Okay, these are pc games that I enjoyed that weren't crpgs.
1. Planescape Torment-a reading game where you run around talking to everybody to piece together the npc's/pc's stories. It's a lot like a crpg in some ways. I never finish this book, but I'd like to one day.
2. Deus Ex- a shooter with a handful of crpg elements. I replay this when I feel like shooting things.
3. System Shock 2-an adventure/shooter with a really creepy atmosphere. Better than today's horror movies, which are pure crap.
4. Heroes of Might and Magic 1-3: I enjoyed these games but haven't played the last two iterations.
5. Spellforce 1-2: The first is an RTS with RPG elements, the second is an RPG with RTS elements.
6. Titan Quest: I never played the two Diablos so this is the closest I've gotten to that type of gameplay.
7. Sacred: This was fun just for the bouncy-tits character (Seraphim?) :D
8. Kult-Heretic Kingdoms: fun action game with an interesting dreamworld. I liked the attunements skill system.
9. Minions of Mirth: my first and probably only Online rpg. I got in fairly early with this game and became a guardian. It was cool helping all the new people get started. Oblivion came out, and I was never able to get back into Minions. Might
have to try this one again soon. Unlike most mmorpgs, you never pay for the game past the initial purchase. I'm not sure if they added extra paid areas.

Okay...
Leander (http://www.mobygames.com/game/amiga/leander) - a great side scroller (circa early 90's) from Psygnosis when they made great games. Played it on the Amiga... not really sure it ever came out for other platforms.
Doom (http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/doom)
Quake I (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/quake)
Demon Attack (http://www.mobygames.com/game/atari-2600/demon-attack)- Atari 2600 game by Imagic (I think) from the early 1980's. It was a Space Invaders/Galaga type of game. It was really great. I still play it on an emulator.
Shadow Grounds (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/shadowgrounds) - great, action packed game.
Pitfall (http://www.mobygames.com/game/pitfall) - Atari 2600 game from the early 1980's. I love that game.
Prey (http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/prey)

Outside of RPGs I tend to play a mix of strategy games like Civilization, Knights Of Honour, the Anno games, city builders like the Impressions and Tilted Mill stuff, the Disciples and Age Of Wonders series as well as dabbling a bit in the Slitherine games.
Also like the Tomb Raider series (Legends was so good), Thief series, Deus Ex (yes, I even enjoyed Invisible War though not so much as the original) and I profess a guilty pleasure enjoyment of the Grand Theft Auto series.
I'm currently looking for my ideal strategy game but haven't found it yet.

6. the roller coaster Tycoon series
7. Spellforce (I count this as a strategy game, although it could be in the RPG section as well)
8. Cultures
9. Unreal 2
10. Deus Ex: Invisible War
I love city builders and sim games. Very occasionally the mood gets me and I play a FPS, although Heretic will always be my favorite in that genre, mainly because of the FPS setting. I would love to get my hands on that Wheel of Time FPS for the same reason..

Your first two on the list are some of my all-time favorites. It's a shame that the Impressions people have faded away. My son had Wheel of Time back in the day and really enjoyed it, but it was way too hard for me--which is not that rare, since when it comes to FPS, I have the coordination and speed of a rock. ;)

Many of the Impressions team are part of Tilted Mill now, who made Children Of The Nile and Caesar IV, and are working on SimCity Societies.
But COTN and Caesar IV never grabbed me the way the Impressions games did. The Tilted Mill games did make some improvements, like removing the walker mechanic, but there's just something missing. I enjoy Caesar III and Pharaoh a lot more than COTN and Caesar IV.
That said, out of the recent city builders, I really liked CivCity Rome a lot. I haven't finished it yet, but it's a very good game.
@Sorcha - I think you are the only person I've ever encountered who would put Deus Ex Invisible War over Deus Ex! I'm curious as to why, what did you like better about IW?
Sorcha Ravenlock
August 6th, 2007, 21:03
I have COTN, but it never grabbed me either :( Truth is, I don't really need another Pharoah. I reinstalled it recently and the game is still fantastic to play... the graphics still look great and the music made me feel right at home :)
I need to try CivCity Rome...
Why I place IW over the original? The fact that I was able to play it
I tried the original, and spent an hour trying to get past the sneaking bit in the tutorial. I never managed, so I uninstalled. If a tutorial is that hard, I'd hate to think what the rest of the game is like... I play games for fun, not to get frustrated. :(
This also ment I had no expectations what so ever of IW, and so for me that was a very pleasant action/FPS/RPG hybrid with a nice story, fun gameplay and some RPG elements. I enjoyed the game a lot.
When people talk about games dumbed down for the masses, I'm always painfully aware I AM part of those masses.
I like IW but not Deus Ex, I love NWN1 but dislike Baldur's Gate... worst thing is that I'm thirty and not a console weaned teenager. just goes to show, doesn't it? :-/

I also loved Zoo Tycoon by Green Fang, published by Microsoft.
Me and my sister simply love this game (it's originally hers, because I gave it to her as a birthday present plus all the addons in the following years), but since there is only 1 PC in he whole house (she doesn't have one), I'm allowed to play with this game as well. ;)

Some of these may not have been regarded as the best of the genre, but I list them because I spent the most time with them. For example, Doom was the first FPS I played that possessed my time like a good book which I couldn't put down.
1) Populous
2) Master of Magic
3) Dune II
4) Monkey Island (all of 'em)
5) Maniac Mansion: The Day of the Tentacle
6) Civilization
7) Doom
8) UFO: XCom
9) Jedi Knight Series
10) Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe
Wow, just noticed...a lot of Lucasarts games up there.

Seems all my favourite non cRPGs have been mentioned already...:) Well, here goes(in no particural order)
1) Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
I like this game because it's the first game I actually knew how to play, well I did die a lot before actually learning. I also like the story of the game, mostly because it reminds me of the Thousand and one nights type of stories. I have a soft spot for the Disney animation Aladdin so that maybe explains why I love eastern fairy tales.
2) Warcraft III
I quess I like this game mostly because of the character of Arthas, I especially liked the clip where he kills his father. Another reason for liking this game might be that it was the first Blizzard game I owned and played through, maybe a bit like finding some type of cuisine you really like as in "I really like this company's games".
3) Rome Total War
What's best about this game is making enemies rout. In TW it's a battle of keeping your men more motivated, while in most RTSs it's a fight to the bitter end. Maybe I also like the game because you get to play as Romans, which would explain why I don't like Medieval 2 TW so much.
4) The Longest Journey(not Dreamfall)
Again, I liked the character of April so much I just had to find out what happened to her and ended up completing the game rather fast. The nutty humour is also wonderful, would like to play the game again just to play hopscots with the sorceror, the one who stole the wind, again. I haven't played any of the classic adventure games so could be like drinking something I'd never tasted before and noticing it tastes great.
Damn, can't think of a fifth game I really loved... I quess I'll make it a top four list.
nah, got one more (which hasn't been mentioned yet I think):
5) Escape from Butcher Bay
If Prince of Persia was the first platformer I learned to how to play without sucking at it, then Escape from Butcher Bay is the first FPS I didn't suck at. Before I played this game I wondered why some people thought Vin Diesel was cool, but after playing it I pretty much found out. I also liked the melee fighting system and the characters you could talk to(not so typical for a FPS).

Damn I hate looking at threads like this here, as you guys always have great ideas, it makes me want to play them all or again, which would take a freaking year! ;)
magerette & Sorcha Ravenlock in regards to Deus Ex and Wheel of Time, apologizes if this is a dumb question but, did you try it on Easy? Both these games have very good stories and acting in WoT's case, defiantly worthy of playing. I tell all my friends that are new to a game or genre the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy. So if your new or having trouble don't rely on the typical male ego mindset of playing games, use Easy and Godmode. Set a personal limit for yourself whatever you know yourself to get frustrated, say after 5, 10, or 15 minutes trying to solve something, then just automatically have your game ready with the command, before you start your game.
Especially with WoT, once patched to 333b it very very hard even on Easy, so have your godmode and extra ammo commands near by. :)
On Deus Ex tutorial, seems I recall it was you just had to go on a opposite side or something, i.e. there was a trick to it. It's been so long since I played the tutorial I forgot. I have both Deus Ex on my PC atm and will replay the tutorial so I will post you the hint and I recently replayed WoT also, so if you need help let me know. :)
As ironanno & JDR13 pointed out EfBB was a pretty neat game, it was from the team whom made Enclave. My biggest gripe, (while I admit realistic) is the quest for cigarettes as loot and to unlock specials. This really bothers me to glorify such a horrible product, which is fully intended by corporatist to violently addict the public, causing devastation to societies, not to mention physical illnesses for the individuals.
Edit, in case Sorcha Ravenlock reads this instead of the WoT thread, here is a link for WoT game, one as cheap as $3 usd. :)

That's a bit funny saying you're bothered by the cigarettes when you're playing as a prisoner who sneaks behind people and kills them in a rather gruesome way, what I mean is glorifying assasination and killing is a lot worse than cigarettes yet people still play shooters. If you say that then how about the coins in Super Mario? Won't having them as collectibles possibly make you greedy and support corporations?
Anyway I doubt the dev team got payed for putting the cigarettes in the game. They're not trademark cigarettes, are they? I think in the game it's, just like you say, only an attempt to be realistic. Having something out of context as collectibles would be a lot worse than cigarettes.

ironanno, hehe yes I am aware it sounds hypocritical. :p
Yet killing in RL is a known violation of Natural Law at the very least and obviously many enforceable criminal laws in most civilizations. Yet cigarettes and the promotion of them are insidious in nature, physiologically and with malicious intent, while the corporatist's being protected, by paid off government officials even with all verifiable data exist, showing the devastation to individuals and societies
We know in most cases if not all that killing is wrong on many levels, but we are brainwashed by corporatist in various methods for various products for the sake of profit. A recent example would be how Food Coloring is added to most foods here in the US, well they are most made from Coal Tar which is a Neurological Toxin which causes the effect of ADD, found recently in England's Food Safety Commission. The FDA here in the US intentionally ignores these facts. Iirc some of the largest Food Coloring corps are in Germany, whom usually I thought were good about health. :(
So in reality it's not a hypocritical position. :)

Why I place IW over the original? The fact that I was able to play it
I had the same experience. I enjoyed the tutorial up to that point and really wanted to play the game, too
Ok, tested it for you girls, here is what you do if you ever want to give the game a try, :)
Go down the steps crouching the entire time of this exersize, but stop short of the bottom landing on the last step or two. Listen for the guard's steps nearest to you, don't concern yourself with the guard on the far side. Remebering you can lean out in most cases, sometimes if your to close to the wall or on a step the game won't let you, so you need to shift your position a bit.
Once the guard comes close he stops for about 5 sec and turns around and walks back, crouching you should move in behind him following him, should be about 5 feet back, he will turn left and you keep going strait Dont Stop, keep going forward and you win! woo hoo. :)
That's it good, luck. :)

Yeah, you have a point. But still it's not the game's fault that cigarettes are rather typical to prisons, where prisoners actually do hold onto them. One might say they are so typical to prisons that it might seem weird if they weren't around. Prisons are also a gathering place of the scum of the earth and I hope no one holds them as role models:). The most open ones to brainwashing are naturally kids, who shouldn't even be playing the game anyway.
I quess since the game is set in a sci-fi universe that the cigarettes could have been replaced by some drug or something, but I think the game purposefully tries to give a "prisony" look, which, like I said earlier, rather strongly includes cigarettes.
