That's what I did. Did all the quests at the bandit camp until it got too hard for my low level (like the Durgan quest you mentioned). Then went to that farm with the novices where Neil can/will take you in the beginning if you talk to him and after doing their quests I had Tellur (name of the NPC might be different in the English version) escort me to the harbor city. Tellur is immortal which comes in very handy. You can get a pretty nice amount of XP by straying off the path on the way to the city and kiting monsters towards Tellur. Then have him kill them for you.
You can get a lot of XP and gold w/o getting involved in any (or at least fairly little) combat in the city.
If you need gold then get lockpicking level 2 + pickpocket + sneak, buy some lockpicks and then sleep until midnight in the city. Then have at it and clear every single house. Then sleep until morning and talk to every NPC (again) once you have pickpocketing (the option to pickpocket an NPC is presented via a dialogue choice).
At one point you will find a way to get out of the city. You can always go back to the bandit camp then and wrap up all the loose ends from when you left the first time (unless you have joined the Order in the city - don't do that if you want to still finish all the bandit camp quests).

You can get a free sneak +1 ring in a treasure chest to the right of the entrance to the commanders place in town.

Beating the mobs in the cave where you find Drugan's body is easy, even at a low level character. I did it with a rusty sword, a shield, and no armor.
Lure the moths(one at a time if possible, but 2-3 is ok too) to the cave opening. Only one at a time can come thru the gate, so position yourself where the moth is in the doorway. Don't let them come outside. Put up your shield, wait for the moth to attack, then immediately counter with 3 hits and back up to where you were at the start of the fight. You need to keep the moth you are fighting in the doorway. He can't move side to side, you are not letting him out of the doorway, so the others behind him are not much of a threat.
This tactic of limiting the movements of the foe works well for all the fights you will have. So before engaging in a fight, look around and find a good place for the battle, like a bridge or narrow gap. Whatever you do, don't let them surround you.

i thought 500 gold coins was quite steep for a "worker's clothes", so after a while i hot-footed it to harbor town. i got the loot from Drugan's cave without killing all the moths, just rushed in and out but had to do it twice and plenty of healing in between.

I have yet to buy the workers clothes. It's a waste of cash. You don't really need it in Chapter 1, and you'll get significantly better in Chapter 2. Also, there is a free armor available in Chapter 1 - the farm on the way to Harbor City (the farm that Jan shows you, where the novices are) has one in the main building. You have to sneak in through the back entrance though, or they will attack you for stealing.

I am planning to join the inquisition, however I want to max out swords skill prior to doing this, so that I can traine with fincher in the bandit camp.....
I have enough experience, however I am seriously lacking in funds...... Can anyone lead me to a nice flow of cash.... I explored a lot of the countryside, However due to me having devoted all my skills to swords I cannot lockpick and I am therefore unable to open chests.....
Anyone has any hints ???`I need about 2000 Gold (Swords at Level 8)....
Thanks in advance,
L

there are a couple of rings of swordfighting i think
Unlikely to get 2000 without further quests ..... you get a lot from quests. Have you done the "rings" quest - could easily get that much then (good locations).

Yes, we even have a thread that describes the location of every ring. Here:
