Seeing the 'hero' climbing a ladder gives me flashbacks to the dreaded Gothic 1 ladders.

Actually, Vladyslav Artyukhov (from UDC) said that development began in mid-2002. Four years, mates, and now, almost into the fifth.The original release was slated for Q4 2004, and it's been pushed back ever since. I'm going to side with JDR13 in this case: most likely, HoE will hit one extreme or the other. It's going to be fantastic, or it's going to be a flop.

We do know they have had development difficulties and put the game on hold at one stage. My guess is that translates to "lack of funds". Still, you never know.
