The people at Resolution Magazine are writing articles about their favoirte video games of 2009. Today, the feature article is about Risen, the RPG from Piranha Bytes. (http://gamebanshee.com/news/96101-resolution-magazines-games-of-the-year-risen.html)
Here's their take on the universe in Risen:
What's impressive about this universe is the attention to detail involved with each and every aspect, from the distinct personalities of the individuals you meet, to the design of the many caves and tunnels forming dungeons throughout the island. It's a small place with an equally small population, but despite this you'll find more than 50 hours' worth of enjoyment bundled in with it; the phrase "good things come in small packages" has never felt so true. It's nothing short of impressive that a developer can pack so much into such a small area, making you wonder what they could do with a world on the scale of Oblivion or Fallout 3.

The words above are quite true in my opinion.
Risen is a very well made RPG game, and the biggest surprise on my account for this year.
I love it just as much as Dragon Age, and that is a big blockbuster type of game.

Gothic 3?
I hope they´ll stick to a smaller scale (and leave out Zelda influences) from now on.
Works best for them.

First thing that came to my mind as well was Gothic 3.

I think the island was too small, personally.

Too small for me too, even smaller than Gothic 1 I think. Though Gothic 3 was too big, or at least too big for Piranha Bytes. Gothic 2 still remains the best PB game.
Risen is a good game, but I personally like Gothic series better, even G3 (with CP).

Even though they may have failed with G3, I'd hate if the lesson out of that failure would be that nobody tries something like that again.

Yeah, I agree completely.
To be honest, I think G3 was pretty close to succeeding - but unfortunately suffered from pretty severe technical issues and the abysmal combat.
But, for my part, I thought the rest was fantastic - but then I tend to prefer expansive worlds and improved freedom of exploration over tight story driven gameplay.
I think it can work.

G3 had some issues, but overall I felt it was quite good. Not as good as G1 & 2, but very good nonetheless. Certainly head and shoulders above Oblivion. I thoroughly enjoyed Morrowind and was severely let down by Oblivion. And I even thought Two Worlds, aside from atrocious dialog, was very satisfying.
Maybe I'm just easy to please.
