Hello and welcome! After many months of planning and hard work, we are now live.
The current site represents a basic feature set, with more advanced features planned as we move along. In the meantime, choose your preferred skin (you'll find a Light and Dark choice on the menu bar at the top) and join us regularly for the latest RPG and MMOG news and exclusive articles.

Congrats on the launch of the new site, folks! :) - Going to take a look around now to see what's new. From the bits I've seen so far, well, it's definitely looking absolutely 100% uber frickin' awesome so far... RPGWatch FTW! :D

Hi everyone,
Just read Dhruin's note on RPGdot, so I thought I'd tag along with you lot. I like the new style, it's more... sober? :)

Greetings all,
this looks much better than the dot (and it's much faster), I hope ye prosper.
And I want to thank Roqua for replying to Dhruin's announcement over at RPGDot, I would not have found the new site without his declaration of love.

True, it was the same with me, albeit Dhruin did hint at the new address, for he said watch out for us :)

One note regarding the site's layout: As Dhruin wrote above it's possible to use either a light theme (default) or a dark theme, depening on your preference. Just click on the "A" at the top, next to the help menu.
Aside from that, you can separately select a color theme on the forums, including these comments pages. It's at the very bottom left. Lapis Watch is the default blue theme that's used on the RPG site, Amber Watch is the golden theme that's used on the MMO site.
Have fun. Oh, and a warm welcome to everyone! :)

Congrats guys to your new site - though I'm sure sad to see the ol' Dot go... :(
(Did have a good time there 'till I felt the need to disappear all of a sudden :O)
What happened? Jolt not so friendly or supportive as originally assumed? Can you talk about it at all?
Seems to me there was a lot of good info/data to be found on the Dot (database, user reviews) - will you somehow port this stuff over, will you start over from scratch or will you leave the games database thing to dedicated sites such as MobyGames or Underdogs?
Anyway, looking forward to whatever the Watch turns out to be. Good luck!
One tiny thing: Using the 'dark' interface (I couldn't resist), blue user names on forum posts are barely legible.

Please check your spam folder at hotmail. It was probably just filtered out (more info (http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?p=838#post838)). If there's really nothing there, yes, you could try your other provider.

Im very happy to be here. I used to read the RPGdot forums for like 2 years, then I became silent and just read news on MMORPGdot for a few more years. I was silent (didnt use forums) because im just so damned busy playing MMOs.
In any case, this new site is great, and im thrilled that you have separate section for MMORPG news. I will be visiting the MMO news section daily multiple times to get the latest MMO news. Thanks a lot for your efforts, this site looks great.

I have to say that this site looks really good. While the Dot has a dark and closed site and forums, RPGWatch actually has a real open and light forums.
I won't be so inactive as I am on the Dot here, neither will I be as active as I used to be at the Dot. Expect me to visit every day :)...
Good work, Dhruin, Corwin, Jaz and the rest of you!

Hello,
Like many others I just moved from your old websites.
The RPGDot team is my first (mmo)rpg news source I check every day and that will not change of course.
Thank you for the daily work you do for the rpg community and I wish you the best with this new site which is now my new homepage :)

Even in it's infancy the site has a magnetic attraction, it's clear, fast, bright and beautiful. There's a feeling of 'revolution' in the air - that feeling of newness as the new pheonix rises from the ashes.
"Well done" and "Good luck" to RPGwatch admin's and members for the future.

I think I was the one most shocked to see the team moving from RPGDot to a new site (and I think the team knows why *g*). Well, I think all things must either end or change after some time, and while I am sad to see RPGDot barren and empty now, I want to wisn you all the best for RPGWatch. As others said before: it's the team that makes a site interesting, and I am sure you will once again set standards on the net.
I'll be a regular visitor like I have been from the beginning :-)

Weren't you the original founder of rpgdot Rendelius? I remember that I did some newsposting for the frontpage year's ago (around 2000 I think) and at that time you were quite active if my memory serves me correctly.
I never was very active on the old fora, but lurked almost every day!

Hail, hail, looks like the gangs all here... most of them anyway and I'm sure the rest will find their way over in time.
Love the new site; clean, fast, bright, Legible, nice layout. Love the Tab switching hope it's expanded on. The quick auto-toggle for color schemes is handy.
I've been visiting and reading the old Rpgdot since its inception and was dismayed to see Jolts lackadaisical attitude the last few months toward the site & staff begin the sites spiral into degredation. I think the only thing thats kept it going were the community forums and wealth of information. I'll regret what I'm sure will be the inevitable loss of information the site contained, however they've lost the best resource they had going for them, the Staff.
Best wishes to the Staff here on your new site.
Independence, I'm sure it will be an exciting ride. I've got my ticket lead on :)

We actually have a guest article ready to post and we do plan to make the site much more interactive in the near future, so guest pieces are definitely part of the equation!!

October 19th, 2006, 04:02
As Corwin said, we have plans to make the site much more interactive when we can finish that development. User Reviews is something we have/are discussing.
In the meantime, if someone wants to contribute, they are welcome to PM me. I can't promise what we will or won't publish without discussion and meeting quality standards and so on, but the door is open for a conversation. :)

Damn, i'm glad i happened to check rpgdot one last time :)
The new site is already light years ahead of the design rpgdot was squished into - and a helluva lot faster to load as well.
Still a few rough edges, but I anticipate all will be well with time :)

October 19th, 2006, 14:46
Here's the story why RPGDot once was called BlinkingDot :-)
It started out as a small personal website on Xoom for a RPG project two friends of mine and I were doing (Legends of the Seers). It was meant to talk about the progress of the game. Because there wasn't much (the only thing we ever finished was my procedural landscape modeling and the display engine), I started to report about general RPG news as well. I moved the site to its own domain, and I named the domain after one of the "monsters" in the various Angband variants (dungeon crawls in ASCII, later with graphics): The Blinking Dot. I think when Garrett joined me in posting news (adding his great database of RPG games), we decided to change the name to RPGDot.
Blinkingdot, by the way, went online in Summer 1999 :-).

Good luck with the site, fellas. Independence is always best. I should know; I used to work for a decidedly non-independent RPG site (GA-RPG). Against my better judgement (and against the advice Rendelius gave me at the time) I stuck around even when eUniverse decided to start messing around with the structure of their gaming-related web publications. The entire thing fizzled.
Even though I'm not involved in RPGCodex much anymore, I'll say that doing an independent broad-coverage website was a far more fulfilling experience. (even though I got some cool things out of working for GA-RPG - such as free games as well as a trip to Larian a while ago). It's a pity that Rendelius' vision of an independent network of RPG-related websites turned out a tad too ambitious... a lot of other networks with similar initial ambitions have croaked over the years. Either their quality gets compromised, or they croak.
Anyway, I'll be interested to see how the site develops. I'm guessing the editorial standards will stay the same, as they are still subject to Dhruin's reign of terror.

'Reign of terror'? I haven't been able to notice Dhruin doing anything remotely like that. If there is any terrorising to do I'm always volunteering for that job ;)

Maybe all the regulars should put a link to RPGWatch in their Dot forum profiles (as "homepage" or in your sig). A more neutral post "good RPG links" with RPGWatch at the top might also suffice.

My congratulations also. I had to shift my favorites so the "new" best RPG news site is on top in my list. I also am saddened that Dhruin's farewell post was pulled from the RPGdot news items. I can only take that as a sign of dissatisfaction from the remaining RPGdot staff (if any).
I don't know, and don't care to know, what inner office politics brought this about. All I do know is you have my best wishes for success.

How come all the articles from here are copied/cloned/whatever back a rpgdot?
Corwin
October 25th, 2006, 01:52
As has been explained in several places, we are doing that for a couple of weeks as part of an arrangement to allow us to use much of our old material from the Dot. That gives Jolt time to decide what they wish to do with the Dot as well.

Some of you might remember me, I used to be part of the RPGDot staff several years ago, before the redesign too (and participated a tiny bit to it). Needless to say even though I barely had any time to spare for computer games anymore, I kept being a daily reader and always appreciated your work.
Thank's for all your doing for all RPG and MMORPG fans out there! Keep it up! And gratz for the new design, it's so much better!
