As part of it's open development process the developers of Might & Magic X have a new story contest going on. Give it a look and who knows one of you might win.
In our former vote which ended yesterday, you have chosen undead as the monster type that will dwell in your dungeon. We can’t say that we’re overly surprised … undead are great, and they also seem to be popular, in spite of their body odour.

What we have now is a dungeon that is based on a ruins tileset, with a balanced gameplay (combat and riddles), with a non-elemental theme and populated by the undead. What we need now is a story.

Why does your party enter that dungeon in the first place? What are they coming for, what’s there to achieve? And what happens then?

Write down your idea for a story and send it to us. We will pick three of your stories and will present them next week, then ask you again to pick the one you like best. This story will then be the basis for our dungeon storyline.

Here are the rules:

  • your story should be about 100 words long, not longer. Just an outline!
  • There are several ways for you to send us your story:
  • Just post it in the comments (but be aware that we have a maximum length of 500 characters per comment).
  • You can also use a paste-and-share-service such as pastebin http://pastebin.com/ .
    Alternatives are for example
  • tnypaste http://tny.cz/
  • snipt http://snipt.org/
  • or for the minimalists among us,
    hastebin http://hastebin.com/
All these services work the same: paste in some text, click save/submit, copy the link and post it somewhere for others to read. In this case, post it in the comment section of this article.
More information.

An ancient evil dwells in the lower levels of the Dungeon. It can only be slain with the Staff of Souls wielded by the Princess of Time: Omega. Unfortunately the Staff was broken into 5 pieces by a murky cloak-and dagger figure called HiddenX. The Princess is missing in action. The 5 pieces of the Staff are guarded by lower demons, zombies and undead called Trasher, Joxer, Arhu, Ghan and Alrik.

Find the old Vampire slayer Myrthos and Zombie Hunter Galaad to get some clues how to defeat the vermin in the dungeon. Restore the Staff, rescue the Princess, outsmart HiddenX, defeat the ancient evil -

Good Luck Hunting :)

PS:
Can we put more cliches into 100 words?

I've already send this to the contest - let's hope they are some authors with better stories or else … something of RPGWatch is in the game :)

The plot -thing X is broken into pieces, please fix it- is in countless CRPGs:

  • In Bards Tale 2 the player must collect all segments of the Destiny Wand.
  • In Wizardry II: The Knight of Diamonds you have to find all pieces of the Knight's armor.
  • The Mavin Sword in Wizards & Warriors.

You encounter a sad, undead masochist outside the dungeon. He used to enjoy eternal suffering at the hands of his undead evil mistress, but has been thrown out of the dungeon for misplacing various cleaning tools while on cleaning duty. He does not enjoy this form of punishment. You must fight your way through the dungeon and find the missing tools, so he can make amends and resume his servitude. As reward for completing the quest, you get a special piece of suitably silly looking masochist armour, which enables you to take more punishment and pain without suffering actual damage.

That story sounds like your wife said this morning:
"Clean the house please, darling! I hope everything is tidy, neat and clean when I'm back from chit chatting with my bosom friends…"

It's good to deal in fantasy stories with horrific real life experiences.
