Never played the game though - how is the combat controlled? Any manual?

Combat is real-time action and it's great, far superior than Oblivion's or Gothic's.

Think charging into a group on horseback and swapping your lance for an axe on your second pass, as you lean out the saddle to avoid a hit, all at breakneck pace!! Great game!!

Wow … they've come a long way from the early version I played ages ago …

No fantasy characters. I played an early version and will try the new release again.
