Had exactly the same problem with my 'old' desktop computer. The solution as you mentioned was to pull out the ram sticks and put them back again (or install them on one channel then the other).

I think by RPG simulation they meant that the world and NPCs are not scripted, but have AI that responds to different actions as in their previous games.

One important thing to mention is that Cyanide did all the writing and dialog for Orcs and Men, and just used Spider's game engine - hence the relatively higher scores for the Orcs game.
