I think the biggest problem is that hardware is no longer the chief bottleneck in developing games like it was through the 80s, 90s, and even the early 2000s. Now, it's the development cost itself….

Normally I'd agree with you, but the King's Field series one of my all time favorites and it was more or less abandoned to start making these games which have a wider audience (believe it or not).

Maybe they should have just shipped it fully patched out. Part of the draw for me of these GOTY style releases is that the vast majority of the bugs have been patched out and are already on disc.

Glad to hear it. Would have probably bought it earlier had they shipped without DRM in the first place (I don't do kickstarter. Promises made during video game development are not reliable at all).
