Ore is the closest thing to currency behind the barrier. You barter by putting the goods you want on one side and goods from your inventory of an equal or higher value on the other, and then confirm this.

I wouldnt use ore for normal purchases when I have an alternative, it is better to get rid of old weapons and extra soup laidles
