European secularism has it's roots in trying to make it possible for Catholicism and Protestantism to coexist in peace. Secul means "time". Time in theology is related to this world where time exist (as opposite to heaven where time doesn't exist). Secularism means attention to this world rather than the "other", built on the realization that people must be able to live a peaceful coexistence regardless of their beliefs about the afterlife. It's the first step towards humanism when one realize that a Christian and a Muslim first and foremost are humans and thus share something very important.

Mankind must put an end to war or war will put an end to mankind. - John F Kennedy
An eye for an eye, and soon the whole world is blind. - Mahatma Gandhi
The world is my country. To do good is my religion. My mind is my own church. This simple creed is all we need to enjoy peace on earth. - Thomas Paine
