Hm, this sounds to me like a takeover. Like the PC becoming a zombie or so. The screen perhaps stays black so that you can't see what a remote software really does meanwhile ?

Professional remote support software has many kinds of functions. I have witnessed it working in an professional enviroment only once, but what I saw was that I could see what "the other side" - the supporter or Administrator - did. On the PC.
If the screen would go black, "the other side" would still able to do things, but I would not be able to see it.

Does this occur when your network cable is unplugged, too ?

Another vague possibility would be the screen going black due to corrupted driver files, and the system perhaps waiting for input it cannot get because dialog boxes overlap each other or so.
Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction. (E.F.Schumacher, Economist, Source)
