I had Comcast cable internet back in Indy. I had troubles a couple times. It was very sensitive to signal strength. I'd say there's a very good chance that splitter is a big part of your problem. That electrical stuff is all black magic voodoo to me, but I'm told there's a wide range of quality (basically, signal loss) between various splitters, too.
