I was perfectly content with XP, but I got a new PC with Win 8 on it and so far its been ok. The whole dashboard look is really just a replacement of the Start button. In that Start screen one of the boxes is for Desktop. Press that, and bingo, you are right back to your normal looking desktop, with icons and shortcuts. I very very rarely even look at that Start screen.
