I do believe they're genuine - but they're also taking advantage of the image they've created for themselves. They're fighting the "good fight" - and they're still in a position to focus on quality gameplay over marketing and compromises for the casual audience.
That rarely lasts, though - and if they get much to be much bigger - they'll start losing the ability to control the project with a tight creative vision.
Generally, after a certain measure of success - developers tend to get too big for their own good - and they'll start becoming complacent, and forget the level of passion and hunger it takes to create a true masterpiece.
But - for the moment - I intend to enjoy their passionate work to the fullest.
