"Watered down" makes it sound like it was supposed to be this real awesome hardcore PC experience, but they took that out because they "had to" release it on console, too. That's just reverse thinking. This is the game they wanted to make and no one forced them to do it.
As far as I'm concerned, self-censorship, proactive censorship or whatever you want to call it is still censorship, it's just a little subtle in comparison. Likewise, "watered down" can be proactive too. You know you are targeting a console audience too (or even mainly) - you make concessions.
That said, hand-holding seems to be a general trend in games these days.. cf. the thread
Older games = harder games? It may be just the way it is…
