Hello,

I played Risen 3 a tiny bit yesterday on the RPC.
It looked good.

I was talking to someone from Deep Silver (if I recall that name correctly), and he didn't tell me a lot of things …

The tiny bit I played was a landing on a tiny beach, which is a small harbour, and there is a building of someone who is selling stuff to magiciians. In fact, one magician is standing close by, so that he can give you very, very basic information. A gnome or what this was (was also in Risen 2) is carrying stuff from a nearby< landed ship (I think) into that small store building. The character you play has someone watching over you (probably a guard ? - as I didn't see the intro, I don't know yet) , and he is called Mendoza.

I was told that -

- PC is the lead platform
- if Risen 2 was running well on the PC, then Risen 3 will be running well on it as well (that's the only information I could get regarding sys specs, since he was not a tech guy)
- it has 3 factions (again)
- it is leaning rather towards Risen 1 and that means a bit away from the pirate theme
- it has no Steam.

I asked about this "Steam hate" (his words, not mine), whether this was an German thing or an international thing.
And he told me : "This is a German thing." In the U.S. and in UK as well, *everybody* wants Steam, and games are not delivered without Steam anymore (so I understood him), and very often not even sold in stores anymore.

As I told him that Steam was in my opinion DRM, he literally said to me (I still have his words in my ears : "Steam is DRM", while nodding very much.

Which implies that, if international companies wonder why games with Steam are not selling well here in Germany - well, that's because we Germans don't want any Steam. ;)

A bit about personal talking :

We talked about DRM a bit further, and he told me - that was his purely *personal* opinion, mind you ! - that UPlay was "much worse than Steam" (his words, not mine). And that he doesn't have any games with DROM ? I'm not sure about that anymore.
Well, we talked a tiny bit about GOG vs. Steam, and he we both found that we had a similar opinion about GOG : Much better than Steam, no DRM, and LOTS of older titles. He owns a lot from GOG, he told me.

Sacred 3 was both playable there and the intro movie (the one we already know from YouTube with that stone bridge battle) was shown there as well, but I didn't get any possibility to play it.
I looked at the playable Sacred 3, and it looked a bit too colourful to me, and the GUI a bit too much streamlined.

Unfortunately I can't say much more about the other games that were shown there, since I was rather interested in getting news about the Beta of the TDE ( = DSA) 5th Edition rule set. I bought it in its print form, after Eevie Dmirtel, who works for Ulisses, told in an workshop that Ulisses was having almost no profits with the printed edition of the Beta. I haven't read it yet, but I got myself informed that at least the character generation is much faster and a bit more streamlined in TDE 5.
There are already 4 or 5 group adventures published in print form for the beta, to get it thoroughly tested by the players.

Apart from that, there's still the "Newbie Edition" (my words) of TDE5 planned, and it will be published under the label of "DSA Classic". Adventures made for it are planned to be made, too.

The bad thing about both is : DSA Classic and 5th Edition will be INCOMPATIBLE with one another !
Which I find very sad, personally. Partly because I fear that "DSA Classic" will stiop to be pursued at one point, in favour to the "main" rule set.

There was a tiny TDE museum as well, which contained a few books in Dutch language as well, plus one TDE novel in English language.

Well, that's it. I don't plan to do the second day of the RPC, so that's all information I can give you now.

Alrik

Edit :

2 more things :

- Publishing date for Risen 3 : August this year.
- Publishing date for Dragon Age : Inquisition, according to a sheet of paper : October, 9th, 2014

This sheet of paper also tells me this, translated from German language :
"Exclusive for preoprderers at Saturn [which is an electronics store chain here in Germany] : The 'Flames Of The Inquisition' Weapons pack.
The first 50 preorderers receive one of 50 limited Dragon Age Lithographies."

EA has its German headquarter in Cologne, where the RPC takes place.

Thanks for the info Alric - I'm keen to see how this turns out. Interesting about the Steam platform in Germany ;-) I must say that I used to loathe Steam, but I have come to accept it (only because i must, however, to get he games I want). But lets not start that debate again *cough*

So, August release date? If you find out more (take the guy for a beer ...or three ;-) let us know!

Edit : I just found it !

This is from the Deep Silver Web Page :

Deep Silver hat heute erstmals ein konkretes Veröffentlichungsdatum für Risen 3: Titan Lords angegeben. Das neue große Rollenspiel von Piranha Bytes erscheint am 15. August in Europa und ist bereits am 10. und 11. Mai bereits als Betaversion öffentlich auf der Roleplay Convention in den Kölner Messehallen (Halle 5.2) anspielbar. Infos und Tickets gibt es unter www.rpc-germany.de.

So it is August, 15th, in Europe.

Alrik good job man, thanks for all this on Risen3 and DRM stuff.
I'm not particulary interested in the ruleset as such, but if there is another TDE based PC game coming, I'm definetly buying it.

Thanks Alrik for the information.

But for confirmation please, does that mean that Risen 3 will be released DRM free (on GoG for example) or with another form of DRM other than Steam?

I would understand it so that Germany will get a Steam-free boxed version while ROW will get the normal Steam keys.

Hm, well I would love a boxed version....but they will probably on arrive months later here! If at all...ugh. Guess I'll have to get the Steam digital version then. Aug 15th sounds good - should have finished with D:OS by then

With 99.99% certainty "no Steam" means "other copy protection or DRM". Deep Silver is well known as a proponent of strong CP.

DACH is the primary market for Risen on PC because DS can ask for full price and because they have direct market access. DS is (at least) Europe's biggest independent distributor.

Well, I certainly hope it's not a disk check like the Tages on Risen 1; I don't have an optical drive anymore.

He didn't say to me if Risen 3 will be Steam-free only in Germany or in general. I have no idea.

He just said to me that apart from Germany, everyone, especially U.S. & UK, want Steam.

This *could* be interpreted as in indicator that Steam might or will be used internationally …

If you live in the US the release date is August 12th, and I'm quite sure there will be no boxed editions just a steam release. It's the new trend nowadays.

Here is the link with the US trailer.

Also thanks for the information Alrik as it's hard to come by as every interview is in German, and Google translation is terrible.

Mendoza? Are you sure? Inquisitor Mendoza is one of the most important characters in Risen 1. I wonder what this means in terms of story. Perhaps the part you played is prior to Risen 1 (like a flashback), perhaps the entire game is prior to Risen 1 or perhaps the name is simply a coincidence.

I have no idea. The companion just had the name "Mendoza" floating over his had when you came close to him. He didn't look healthy. Scarred, and he had an blueish look.

The reason for his unhealthy look is:
in risen 1 Mendoza was killed. So new hero probably will contact him through underworld with Voodoo. Similar to risen 2.

The main market for the Piranhas was and is Germany I think.
Many gamers here (even some non-cRPG players) know and play their games.

Outside of Germany PB games are more an insiders' tip or for cRPG specialists.

I understand that HiddenX but that's called bad marketing. Deep Silver is the publisher and they have released a lot of games in the US market.

Regardless I'm one of the few overseas who will buy it on release.

Yeah - it's bad marketing. On the other hand I like it when their games are not streamlined for the world market.

Marketing has nothing to do with streamlining it's about spreading information. Usually thats the publishers or developers decision that causes it.
