What I've Been Watching: The Catch-All Film Thread

Bought the second season of the Muppet Show. Such fun, and the Wild Dogs like it almost as much as me, even though they lack the context of the guest stars. Hopefully, season 3 is in the works.

So who was on in the 2nd season?

Let's see. John Cleese, Elton John, Lou Rawls, Julie Andrews, Bob Hope, George Burns, Peter Sellers and another 20 I can't remember off the top of my head. I really enjoy Peter Sellers, but I thought his episode was hilarious.

Yep, they had a few good ones in season 1, but there was a big step up for seasons 2 and 3. You can tell that some of them didn't really get comfortable with the puppets, though. Bob Hope basically had one monologue and no muppet interaction to speak of--a disappointment.

My favourite Muppet show episode of all time was the one with Nureyev dancing with Miss Piggy. Somewhere in my collection, I think I still have that clip.

Rented Eragon for the Wild Dogs. The Twinkies bailed when the "maggot ninjas" showed up. Monkey made it thru the entire show, but got pretty scared at a few scenes. I guess I overestimated their capacities. For my part, I thought the show was a disappointment with poor acting, a lousy script, and boring action. Other than that, it was a wonderful show. ;)

Also rented Pan's Labyrinth but haven't gotten far with it yet. After the first 20 minutes, I'm not exactly trying to find time to finish it.

Went to see Resident Evil 3 with the Mrs. last night. Pretty good, as long as you don't dig too deep into the plot (cuz there's gaping holes to be found). They did continue their habit of padding the movie with footage from previous episodes. Not as much of a Road Warrior ripoff as I was expecting based on the commercials.

me and a tigress went and saw that last night too, and I have to admit, it was pretty cool! Good date flick, it's total chick-empowerment without having to deal with the sappy bs. I need to see the prior films now, and I keep glancing over at my Playstation beneath my television then back at my RE 1&2.

One of these days, I tell ya. I want to play RE4 as it's out for pc now, and nice priced, but I gotta get a gamepad from wht Ive read first.

anyway, back to the film. Nice violence, zombies, and I'm always down for post-apocalyptic theme. I liked how the final boss battle was actually the final Tyrant boss from the first game. Brought back pleasant memories!

We enjoyed it when it first came out, but it was clearly not all that great.

some people sit on top of a mountain and meditate. Some hide themselves away in some dank cave or monastery to the sounds of chanting monks for years. Some while their years away on heavy drugs, seeking the ultimate high. Sometimes they reach their nirvana, often they dont. They die unfulfilled.

Me, I took a quick and easy route via Rob Zombie's horror remake masterpiece Halloween. I can die in peace now, having attained true Horror Zen.

From beginning to end, my happy horror hotline was ringing off the hook. I could barely keep up with the barrage of calls to my foggy cerebral cortex. BAM BAM BAM the calls were flying in like a Jerry Lewis telethon for the damned. Hello? Messed up childhood here. Real messed up, yet unfortunately hilarious as well. Some sympathy for the Devil. Vengeance. Little girls w/ big tits, big girls w/ little tits, hell we got boobs galore here. Good soundtrack. The original piano theme at the right place and time. An irritating teen nailed halfway up the wall with a kitchen knife. Sid Haig & Ken Foree reporting for duty, captain. Sheri Moon Zombie doing a half-naked pole dance to Love Hurts. What the f*^%$# more can you ask for?? And the kills, good God above, this thing made the original look like an after-school special! This shit was genuinely disturbing at times.

The bastards had it coming tho.

Oh I heard reality calling. Some whiny little beotch yapping in a nasal voice about "how would Mikey be able to find his old mask after all these years, huh?? Huh? huh??" "How would he know where his mother's grave was? How would he know who and where his little sister was?" How could he take that many bullets??"" Look here Pee Wee, have you never seen a slasher film before? Michael Meyers is an Evil Thing, dummy. He's possessed. He's not-of-this-world. He's Lusiphurs bastard son. Now get the hell off my phone before I send a horror s.w.a.t. team over there to friggen crucify your ass!

True, I liked Ho1KC, I liked Devil's Rejects. I like White Zombie. I may be a bit biased, I may want him to win one here. Call me a raving fanboy (or an a-hole), but I think that this is Rob Zombie's coming-of-age, his maturing as a director. I was so pumped up from this blistering degree of awesomeness, I had to kill a 6 pack at the local hole-in-the-wall bar to knock myself out! On a school night, oh man, I had to drag myself in to my cubicle this morning but it was worth it. Between this and the release of "The Lost Tracks of Danzig", I got a freakish perma-grin that shant fade for weeks.

Hello, John Carpenter? With all due respect, I'm just calling to inform you that youve been officially outdone.

I agree with you Sam... it was a great film. And it's definitely Zombie's best film so far, IMO (though I have enjoyed his other films as well).

You raving fanboy...

Actually, I agree that Rob took a big step forward with this one. His previous shows were loosely connected Fangoria displays. If anything, Ho1KC took a step back from the flimsy plot of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This one had plenty of gore, but the story was coherent and wasn't just a carbon copy.

I was impressed all the way around, i'm sure you noticed that...
hey I was excited! I got really drunk as hell that night too, I'm just starting to feel normal again this morning - pretty much an entire day hangover yesterday.

But yeah, the story was really fleshed out as opposed to the original, the effects were good, the way that Zombie has mastered doing the 70's is great. I love his older films and own them, but his other characters tend to be cartoon characters in a way. Theyre twisted as hell and evil... but also kinda funny and cute. I can almost see some of them sitting beside Michael Keaton in the waiting room in Beetlejuice. There was none of that here. The stepdad was kinda funny in the way he was such a complete prick, but I could really see some drunk ass worthless white trash abusive parent mofo being like that. He wasnt a cartoon character, he's exactly what I envision abused children of alcoholic parents face all the time. He was horrible. Glad to see him get his.

What was wrenching about some of these kills, is that there was a few times when they werent actually killed outright. Most times you casualties in these films laying around with the proverbial X's on their eyes. It's over, move on. Not always the case here. Some were just messed up really bad, left clinging to life. It sorta nails home the pain theyre feeling.

I gotta go play my Monk at my saturday d&d game, although now I'm going to play him with a little more Zen!

I actually climbed into this thread to ask for some recommendations on a good horror flick to rent, but I think Sammy has answered my question. :)

You can't rent Halloween yet (at least not the remake). It's still in theatres.

The film and music industry is safe from me--have no idea how to do any of that pirate stuff--and not about to try. I'd probably end up with half-a-hard drive of porn by mistake.o_O

Sucks I can't rent the Zen classic of horror yet, though. Anybody have any ideas on something a bit more, er..tasteful than Saw that's out on DVD?
