As much as it sucks, this is true. However supply is not limited and I've been in rooms where the decisions are made who to treat and who not to treat. Someone has to make these choices, there isn't enough for everyone. Should you really replace grandmas hip at 95? For a total cost to the system of $145,000 for a reduced life expectancy after surgery? Or... should we spend the same $145k on three patients in their 40's that have approx 20 years left?

Funny, but unfortunately fictitious. California has a budget surplus but not once all those shiny new programs kick in. Even at their current rate of improvement if nothing new was added, they'll finally break even in the year 3305, give or take a decade.
