Oh, and if anyone want any recommendations for which games to try out:
Cave story
Warzone 2100
Dwarf fortress
Battle for wesnoth
The white chamber (I'm not a big fan of manga style games, but this one has a lot going for it)
Beneath a steel sky
Dink Smallwood

I have not played all games on the list though. Also, I'm making a new post because I don't want to clutter up the original post with this.

What about the Wizardry series? Afaik, all the Wizardry games have been freeware for awhile now, or at least Wiz 1-7.

Are they freeware or just abandonware? (which is not a legal state, most abandonware are still illegal, although they games are not sold anymore, and for the most part the devs/publishers don't care)
The first wizardry was recently re-released in a slightly updated form for PS3 (with manga graphics), so I'm not so sure if the current licence holders have stopped caring.
I can't seem to find any solid information about their legal state though.

I don't think they're illegal, I think it's more of a grey area.

I haven't heard anything about the first Wizardry being re-released on PS3. Is that a Japan-only thing, or are you confusing it with Labyrinth of Lost Souls?

I also recommend Halo Zero to anyone who played the first Halo and is interested in Abuse's game-play mechanism and samorost which is very short, but decent as a free game.

I seem to have been mistaken, it is not a re-make, just a game that sticks very close to the original formula. It is called Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls.

Anyway, I can't seem to find Wizardry up for download on any other sites than abandonware sites, and a site that also offers wizardry 8 as a download. While I have no moral objections against abandonware, the fact that it is, technically speaking, illegal means that I won't post links to such sites.

Halo zero & samrost added to the list.

The guy who wrote WarWizard has given his permission for it to be public domain. It is very old, but pretty fun nevertheless. I posted the game here and a few folks said they'd host it. You could look for it in the archives if you're interested.

Enigma - an ecclectic puzzle game inspired by old Oxyd games
AGDI´s Sierra remakes - so far they remade King´s Quest I, II, III and Quest for Glory II and judging by my playthrough of KQ II they do a great job

I highly recommend Dink Smallwood. I played it few years back, extremely hiralious. Loved it.

How could I forget about AGDI's remakes? I have even played through their King's Quest 2 version (which I might add was far far superior to the original. The early KQ games have not aged particularly well).

And I agree, Drink Smallwood is a great little game. I played it when it was first released and really enjoyed it (was it 98?). The game was really cheap on release, which was an added bonus (I think it cost something like 20€).
