What I've Been Watching: The Catch-All Film Thread

As for Jennifer Lawrence, she is 22 (and of course all of the stars of the Hunger Games were much older than the 12-18 they portrayed). She was really good in Winter's Bone, which was a solid movie from 2010.
Excuse me? Good? Solid?
She was not good but awsome. Can't wait to see more of her work. Which will be a problem as the job goes usually to prettylooking acting-antitalent and inability to express any emotion: Alba, Fox and alike.
And Winter's Bone is a masterpiece.

This is the perfect mainstream popcorn movie. 2 hours 20 long, but very entertaining throughout. Big f/x budget, good actors, not that much although spectacular action.
The secret stars of The Avengers are Scarlet Johansen as Black Widow and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk.

The Avengers

When I was just a kid, I swallowed every single comic I could find/buy/read. Avengers wasn't one of those, but separate comics about members like Thor were.

And then I saw on a big screen many heroes I adored, and honestly, every time I was plain disappointed. I was not sure what audience those movies were ment for. Till Tim Burton's Batman came. There I said, someone finally succeded to put the things right. And was very happy.

I'll skip many different movies with comic heroes, some were great and some were utterly stupid.
But then a friend of mine said that Iron Man 2 is good. Um… 2? WTF? I honestly didn't know the first one existed at all, so I watched it. And again I was happy. Y'know the shrink "inner child" crap, well, it's something like that. Iron man (both) went on the same track Tim Burton started, superhero comics are and were always ment to be not just action, not just visuals, but quality humor!
Lack of enough humor is what bothered me in Captain America (movie), but luckily, it came back in Thor (movie). And finally Avengers were made.

You may (try to) imagine Avengers in the same tone as Fantastic Four as it's also the movie about a group of superheroes, but FF utterly failed (if you ask me) because of - lack of humor. Okay, not just that but lemme save it for later.

Avengers has it all - action, looks and - TONS of humor. Tons.
Don't get me wrong when I say looks, comics are not all great, and one of things you want to see in a comic is superb drawing. If it's badly drawn, no good scenario will save it. In a movie with superheroes, superb CGI is a must and Avengers excel in that.

The story is practically a cliche, but then again, who said cliche sucks? If perfectly executed, and if there are many sidestories with it, cliche doesn't suck, and we got exactly that. Good vs Evil cliche, but polished.

Gorath says Scarlet Johanson is a secret star… She is not. A secret. She is everything a female super hero should be. With just one sentence you may describe her as a writing on t-shirts prince's batman soundtrack "babes" wear: All this and brains too. She's simply anti-Megan Fox and anti-Jessica Alba.
Also every single movie character is not set aside, each has it's own minutes and each succeeded to show his/her story and if you want to put it like that - everyone managed to explain his/her role. The movie because of that is over 2 hours long, but hey, it is still without a single minute of boredom.

And also… There is actually no sex in this movie. Nor yucky Biowarelike romance. And it's still selling!! :)

On such movie, where one of key points is humor, the audience said yes. I also say yes and can't wait for the sequel.

watched The Dungeonmaster at like 2am last night. My eyes are still burning, probably the worst movie that Ive ever seen. But it hurt so good!

Richard Moll ("Bull" from Night Court) plays the arch demon guy, it's hilarious. I'm really surprised there wasnt ninjas in this film.

I saw Fight Club again. Amazing movie as always. One of my most favorites. And one of David Fincher's best along with Seven.

I also started Inland Empire, as I quite like Lynch's movies. But this one just doesn't cut it. It's got the weird elements that you get with his movies, but I just lost interest over the course of it. I guess it will be this and Eraserhead that I won't be fully seeing. I couldn't finish that one either. It was weird as hell but I got bored.

Too bad Lynch seems like he won't be doing any other movies too soon.

The Raid: Redemption. Some Korean movie, a lot of rather well done action and a very simple plot (a SWAT team tries to take out a bunch of thugs inside a tenement). I think people rate it a bit higher because it happens to be korean and not american. It's a nice enough movie, but if you want to see a really good foreign movie with action and good plot and actors i would rather recommend the brazilian movie Tropa de Elite.

I like Eraserhead and Inland Empire for their extremely nightmareish mood, but they're both very demanding movies. Inland Empire i couldnt watch in one sitting, very mentally exhausting to say the least.. Loved seeing Lynch in the previous episode of Louie (awesome drama/comedy show).

I finally saw Prometheus. Big mistake.

I got no sleep on the overnight from Lihue to LA...

But the movie itself wasn't too bad.. It just didn't make a lot of sense re the motivations of the engineers and why they were there, the opening scene, and the cyborg. A mish mash of decent creepy scifi stuff. But still entertaining.... Watched it twice, to try to figure out what was going on re the above, to no avail, sadly...

The Raid: Redemption. Some Korean movie…
Korean? Yea, right…
It's Indonesia's nearmasterpiece of action. Ppl who rate it don't care if it's american or not, it's simply a great movie, so watch it before Hollywood makes a silly remake.
The sequel is already in preproduction, can't wait.
There is no way you won't like this movie even if only slow dramas are your thing, it actually has a story different from "kill everyone, save the world" and it has emotions hidden all over the place. Highly recommended.
B+

I finally saw Prometheus. Big mistake.
Not a mistake at all.
The Alien franchise practically reboots in the manner of the first film, sci fi mystery/horror that spams questions. The problem some ppl don't like is that this "prequel" leaves too many unanswered ones. Not that it's a bad thing, I actually love that stuff. Besides, last time I wondered if someone is a robot or not after I've watched the movie was in Blade Runner (here it's Charlize Teron, tell me you're sure she is/isn't a robot).
Awsome cast with stellar performances, a juicy mystery scenario, great CGI, and we'll get a sequel definetly. If you don't like to exit the cinema/turn off the DVD player and think/speculate about things you've just seen, this one is not recomennded. No movie can meet everyone's taste but Prometheus hit me in the right spot (not in the knee! ;)). I can't give it less than:

The mistake was expecting it would lull me asleep.

The characters did annoy me by the stupid things they did, though. Many "what were they thinking" moments, unlike the original.

You're on some good drugs if you honestly think Prometheus deserves an "A". :)

…and no, Charlize Theron was not an android.

Yea, sure. Whatever you say. :)
But it's clean A. I'm not saying you have to like it. For example I despise the oscarwinning movie you adore - Titanic. ;) But since this is "catch" thread it'd be stupid from me to write about a movie I can give only F, right? There is another example - another F to the most stupid and most overrated sci fi/mystery movie I've seen in my life - Donnie Darko.

In the meantime…

Headhunters

Good movies that mix many genres are rare. An unusual and in the same time awsome mix of crime, mystery, thriller, horror, drama, romance, action, sci fi, comedy and I dare to say torture porn - comes from Norway:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1614989/
A fresh story based on a book by Jo Nesbo with twists and turns dares you to try to predict what will happen next where you of course fail and movie goes into another direction.

It's about a corporate headhunter (hunts talents not bounties) who also has another "job" - he's an art thief. He's married, no kids, and although his wife looks fantastic, he has an affair aside. While this sounds it's about some greedy and emotionless bastard, it's not really, he just needs loads of money, and why, well, watch the movie. Of course, things can't work all the time, and the disaster is imminent. Soon he'll be on the run and will lose almost everything if not all. That includes his hair too. :)

Cast is great, you'll definetly recognize a certain actor known for his role in Game of Thrones HBO series, those who like to check on less known movies could remember seeing him ages ago in danish Nightwatch (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110631/), pretty good thriller/horror. Other actors are not widely known, but they all did an awsome job.

Lemme quote myself from the previous post as it works also on this movie: watch it before Hollywood makes a silly remake.

A

P.S. Don't worry JDR, this movie doesn't leave any question unanswered - and there is no robot inside definetly. ;)

The original Alien, silly. :p

I figured that's what you meant, but I had to mess with you anyways. ;)

Come now, well all know that Titanic is the most underrated movie in the history of cinema.

Watched "Pirates ! A band of misfits !" on DVD this evening.

Nice movie, but the end idn't feel "round" to me. Not at all. Too many still open questions, and most of all : There is not a kind of "good ending climax" which would have been the Pirate Captain actually getting the real prize.

In fact, the movie didn't have any real ending at all. It reminded me in that respect of "Pirates", the movie by Roman Polanski.

The bonus movie was nice, too.

But somehow, I really don't know why, both movies didn't quite catch me. They all felt as if something substancial was missing, but I don't know, what.
