Thorvalla - Cancelled

So, I just had this great idea that no one will ever read…

Kickstarter strech goals of funding other kickstarter games!

Project Eternity was like… "100,000$ and we'll give you another NPC model and another pet dog!"

And my most wanted, Planetary Annihilation, had strech goals like.... "$200,000 and we'll add planets made of entirely water and also naval units" Wtf as if the game doesn't have naval units when there are oceans and Total Annihilation has them. I mean do they think we're stupid? How hard is it to make naval units? its all the same stuff. Change the unit template to a boat model and restrict it to water. 200k for that?

It's kind of in the spirit of things to get everyones games going. Don't just make up bullshit strech goals that were always gonna be in the game while pocketing cash thats needed to fund other peoples games. And, fark, Obsidian? How commercial can you get? They could have found a publisher in an instant. :/

SirJames,

I believe that is what the "kicking it forward" pledge is for… which Obsidian has already pledged to do. Hence, don't be such a d*ck.

Not sure, my family had always had one, and I got my own quite early (when I was an exchange student). I assume one reason is that debit cards are so widespread, and you can pay pretty much anything with them within Germany. But I am not even sure what the actual statistics are on this…

I know no-one in my area having one.

Paying with Giro-Cards has become common only in the recent years. Credit Cards are just uncommon, I don't really know why, too. It's just a fact that i know no-one who has one. They all use Giro-payments as bank transfers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sparkasse

I have the suspicion that this might also be an age thing. I tend to believe that the older pople become, the less they are used to the concept of Credit Cards. And since with Giro you have the possibility to pay anywhere as well, so why bother at all ?

People just use their bank account cards - often Sparkassen accounts - with everything. The Sparkasse - a kind of public bank - has seemingly just filled this "ecological niche", I guess. The Sparkasse is the overwhelming main bank service here in Germany. Other banks are there and popular, but the Sparkasse is something almost everyone uses.

More info here :

This is the most important information about German payment habits, I think : Giro cards, this is what I called a "Sparkassen-Karte", because the local Sparkassen give these cards out :

Interestingly, although meant to be "for international use", both Maestro and Cirrus are never an option for U.S. - based payment methods :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cirrus_(interbank_network)
These two services are what I think all Sparkassen-Cards have additionally.

I'm German and I've had a credit card for a long time (Amex, then Visa and now Master Card). It costs a fee of €30 per year and there is a small 1.5% fee when using it for purchases outside of Germany (like when I buy from Steam).

I couldn't and wouldn't want to imagine a life w/o a credit card. It makes things so much more convenient (one click purchases from many places on the net).
I also like the added bonus of buying something now and paying up to a month later. My card gets billed around the 15th and I get my work salary between the 10th and 15th of each month. A credit card allows me more flexibility in handling my funds and purchases.

--> Credit card. Awesome.

HiddenX is right.
Plus, it was imho a mistake to use Kickstarter.
Why ?
Simply because Credit Cards are still uncommon in Germany.
If he had used a Kickstarter-like service wich allows simple bank transfers, his money would have doubled, I almot asume. Because Germans just don't use Credit Cards, they use simple bank transfers. nd even PayPal is ued rather by the younger genration, not so much with the older gamer generations (35+), I think.

I learned this the hard way on my last trip there. My company was having an off-site meeting for our global compliance group and as we had recently opened a Frankfurt office, we decided that we'd do it there. After the meetings, we went out into the country for a night. Not far from where most of us we were staying was a monestary that had been converted into a hotel and restaurant. The head of our Frankfurt office told us the restaurant was amazing and we should all go there for dinner.

So we did and he joined us. There were 8 of us and I think the bill came to around 1500 Euros (there was a fair amount of drinking involved!). Well, the Frankfurt guy had to leave to get home. No problem, the head of our group was paying the bill anyway.

Until we found out they only accepted cash and some type of German specific debit card. The Frankfurt guy had neglected to mention that to us before he bailed! The confusing part was originally we had booked two rooms at the monestary using an Amex card, yet they wouldn't take it in the restaurant. It took about 30 minutes using a mixture of their broken English and our broken German to convince them that we had the capacity to pay, just not the method. There wasn't an ATM within 30km of the place.

We ended up getting them to bill our Frankfurt office, to which I am sure they were a bit surprised to receive!

Many restaurants accept Credit cards but definitely not all. Same for shops.

ITT Thorvalla wouldn't have failed if Germans knew how to use credit cards, because his name is known to every child and his likeness decorating many a teen's bedroom.

It would have helped greatly if they had had some ingame footage of a red dot moving over an overland map though.

hahah, for some reason I found this funny...I can't think of many game devs over here on anyones walls, especailly teenagers or children. Very culture clash here.
