Question about program icons

Hello.

Recently, I put all of the programs that had shortcuts on my desktop into a folder on the desktop. I did this to clean things up on my desktop. Everything is fine except for the fact that the program icons are no longer there. They show up as a white piece of paper instead of their usual icons in the taskbar. When I open the folders I created, I see that the icons for the programs in the folders themselves are also changed to white pieces of paper.

How can I correct this? I tried using a new icon in the properties menu but my changes don't stay upon a computer restart, and sometimes I can't change the icon at all because I get a message saying I can't.

Any ideas?

Grab this (trial version but who cares as it's for one use only):

With it switch to any icon package, no matter. Then use it again, but switch back to standard windows icons! Well, unless you want the first "temporary" package to stay…

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind.

I think I fixed it simply by going to Properties and Change Icon, and selecting the old icon from there and hitting Apply. It seems to have done the trick. I hope it lasts through restarts and what not but so far, so good.

Another program from Stardock worth checking out is Fences (http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/) which allow you to group icons (fence) together and hide them/bring them forward again by doubleclicking the desktop. You can also configure a fence to show only when your mouse is hovering over it.

I've been using it for years, very happy with it.

+1 to Fences. Best desktop management app on the Windows side of the things. Still using v1.0 though.

Thanks everyone. I'll keep these programs in mind if the issue pops up again (it seems to be fine now).
