Witcher Will reading the books ruin the game?

The Witcher
Not as far as I'm aware. I've heard the opposite is true, though, that the game can spoil events in the books. However, if you're reading in English, you're going to be waiting a long time to read all the books. We've only had two translated so far, a third is coming next year (I think) and I've not heard anything about the rest of the series.

I have both books, have finished one and part of the other (really need to restart that one before the next game) and found them pretty well written for fantasy fiction. Certainly did a good job rounding out the characters.

The story of the games is new. Sure, a reuse of some motif here, a nod to something from the books there, but that's it.

Oh, yay. I was trying to find info about that just the other day.

Well, reading The Last Wish definitely won't spoil the game for you, or vice versa.

I'm only part way through Blood of Elves, but it does seem to have a different main story as far as I have read, though it is the same world in general.

G'day,
I have read both and agree it won't ruin the game at all. The boks are related but not essential. As was said nice to round out the characters and alittle of the back stroty.

A little bit of a sidetrack here: I haven't had the time to play The Witcher yet, but I've read The Last Wish and it's really good. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy.

The events in the books take place _before_ the game, so no - it's possible to read all books and then play the game, which (in that case) is a continuation of Geralt's story. It's pretty awesome actually.

I played the game long before I started reading the books (I had never heard of the Witcher) and it happens (in the game) that Geralt runs into certain characters and they act like they know him and I wasn't sure what to think of it then. Since I didn't know them, they could have been lying or whatever, but someone who has read the books, knows they are indeed telling the truth. Also, there will be certain dialogs, when a situation from the books is referred to. So having read the books is the difference if you'll know all about it, or if it's just meaningless to you/a phrase like any other.
But in general the game is really made so it's not necessary to know the books at all, it's usually just references that will make someone smile every now and then, if the player knows more about it.

The books basically created the world, the game takes place in. So every reader of the books will be accustomed to this world already, when starting to play the game. I like that. They are like an encyclopedia for the game. The books prove that CD Projekt did a really great job at building a game from these stories about Geralt, that already existed.

I'm currently trying to read all the books before The Witcher 2 comes out in May (I started the third book today). I like them a lot so far! I speak german and in that language only 1 book hasn't been released yet. The last one will come out in March, long before I will have read the first 6 books, so soon enough for me.

To me its still a shame that the main books are still not translated. Only the short stories published by orbit.

Cant` believe these were not translated into English...crazy. They`re quality writing and also differ from the mainstream fantasy fare so I`m sure there`s a market for it.
