Divinity: Original Sin versus 2010 Laptop

I'm really liking the look and approach of Divinity: Original Sin. I'm extremely tempted to rush out and get myself a copy.

The only thing holding me back is how will it run on my laptop?

I have a 2010ish standardish Acer laptop with Windows 7 and this is the system I will most likely use to play the game.

Will I be torturing myself making sure it plays on such a system or can I just load it up with recommended settings and have hassle-free endless gameplay?

(or would I just have to tweak one power slider in the settings?)

I'm running D:OS on a very old (upgraded) computer from 2008:

Processor: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3360 @ 2.83GHz (quad core)
RAM: 8GB
GFX: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti (4GB RAM)
Board: Asus P5K
System: Win7 64 Bit
Resolution: 1920x1080
NVIDIA-driver: 9.18.13.3221

It works like a charm.

Windows performance index:
Prozessor Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3360 @ 2.83GHz 7,3
(RAM) 8,00 GB 7,3
Grafik NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 Ti 7,9
GFX 4096 MB insgesamt verfügbarer Grafikspeicher 7,9
Harddrive 28GB free (from 249GB) 5,9

No need to worry about settings in this game.
When you start the game, just go into graphics options and press autodetect.
Simple as that. You may of course customize suggested settings afterwards.

I would be worried about overheating in a laptop - the Unity engine can be downright torturous on a gpu.

That is absolutely true, however…
It's simply not a case of for example these:

- A few Unity games that are trying to kill your graphics card with nothing, and your UPS is beeping like crazy because your rig is trying to suck up too many watts

D:OS doesn't overheat on my side. Badly optimized or not optimized at all Unity games definetly did that.
This doesn't guarantee it won't go crazy on a specific architecture, but still.

It doesn't seem like a computer from 2008 to me. :)

What are the specs of it? Cpu, Gpu, Ram and OS?

It doesn't seem like a computer from 2008 to me. :)

The Asus P5k is from 2007.

The processor from 2008.

The GFX card from 2013.
The enhanced main memory from 2013.

The actual main-hard-drive from 2011.

PS:
I never used one mainboard this long before in my life.

It's an Acer Aspire 5742 (purchased refurbished in mid-2011):

It says:

Intel Core i3-370m
Windows 7
15.6" HD LED LCD
Intel HD Graphics
3 GB DDR3 Memory
320 GB HDD
DVD-Super Multi DL drive

on the outside,

and

64-bit
2.40GHz (processor)
copywrite 2009 Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1
And all the above

on the inside.

Seems no game. Steam says about requirements:
Minimum:
OS: Windows XP SP3 or higher
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo E6600 or equivalent
Memory: 2048 MB RAM
Graphics: HD Intel Graphics 4000 or NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800 GT (512 MB) or ATI™ Radeon™ HD 4850 or equivalent
DirectX: Version 9.0c
Hard Drive: 10 GB available space
Sound Card: DirectX9c compliant

Intel Core i3-370M means it's Westmere architecture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_i3_microprocessors).
For D:OS, if we'll believe steam min. req., you need at least Ivy Bridge:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_HD_Graphics
Or an additional graphics card.

That Aspire laptop was ment for business, not for gaming. Sorry.

I have Core to Duo E7500 cpu. 2009 model dual core cpu. My Cpu is more than enough for the game, so I think yours too. But bottleneck is the GPU here. Sorry but I don't think it will run on an integrated GPU. Generally I don't recommend notebook for gaming. The ones suitable for gaming are both expensive and produce to much heat which shortens their lifetime.

Shame, it looked like a good and fun time drain.

Yeah, the graphics card is my weakest area, the system even admits to that, giving it just a 3.8.

Guess I'll have to get it a few years down the line :)

Get real. It can't exist on current USB specs.
Wait for USB10.0. :)

Guess I'll have to get it a few years down the line :)
If possible, try to save 70-80€ per month till xmas. Everything will be on sale and you can combine yourself a pretty decent gaming machine. It won't be laptop though nor will be some high end stuff, but who cares as long as it's running everything. ;)
If you want I can write down one such "cheap" rig.

Thanks for the offer. I doubt I'll do it, I'm an old-fashioned use-it-till-it's-dead kinda guy rather than a yearly upgrader, but I never refuse a peek.

Also, someone else might find the info useful :)

To my knowledge, D:OS does not use Unity but Larian's own engine.

That being said, it can be taxing on a GPU for sure (the game really puts my GPU to work, at least, judging from the fan speed/noise), but more than that, I've noticed the game really likes RAM too. I'd say having 4GB of RAM should be considered the minimum and 8GB+ the recomendation.
